ABC Releases Official Details For The Dancing With The Stars Season 18 Semi-Finals

ABC Media Net has released details for Monday. I am so excited for Kenny Ortega to be a judge. I’m also excited on a new Macy’s Stars Of Dance performance as well!! Read on for more including dance information…

“Episode 1809” – Emmy Award winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega makes his “Dancing With The Stars” debut as a guest judge on American Icons Night when he sits alongside Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba, MONDAY, MAY 12 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. The semi-finals begin as the five remaining couples must rise to the challenge of performing two different routines to music by legendary and modern American Icons. The couples will perform a variety of dance styles including Foxtrot, Rumba, Jazz, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Samba, Cha Cha, and Jive. At the end of the night, one couple will face elimination leaving only four couples to move on to the Finals.

Kenny Ortega’s work as a director, choreographer and producer is known and loved by millions around the world. Ortega has been the recipient of three Emmy Awards, a DGA Award, an Imagen Creative Achievement Award and an American Choreography Lifetime Achievement Award, among many others. In the arena of film, Ortega was mentored by the legendary Gene Kelly and has choreographed such landmark films such as “Dirty Dancing,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Pretty in Pink,” and “To Wong Foo.” He has also directed and choreographed the films “Newsies” and “Hocus Pocus.” For over two decades, Ortega was Michael Jackson’s director and creative partner. He directed both the “Dangerous” and “HIStory” world tours in the 1990’s. Their creative partnership came to an abrupt end as they were working together on what was to be their greatest effort to date. Jackson’s untimely death brought the production and the world to a stunned halt. Left with over 100 hours of rehearsal footage, Ortega, along with his close collaborators, assembled a two-hour feature film celebrating Jackson’s talent. The feature film, “This Is It,” was released in 2009 by Sony Pictures and received an overwhelmingly positive response worldwide. Ortega has also worked with many legendary musical artists such as Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler and The Pointer Sisters. Recently, Ortega directed Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” and “High School Musical 2,” which was seen by over 17 million viewers when it premiered, making it the most watched program in cable telecast history. Ortega just completed directing a romantic comedy, “A Change of Heart” and is currently directing “Descendants” an Original Movie for the Disney Channel.

“Macy’s Stars of Dance” returns for a third installment with creative oversight and choreography by Emmy® Award-winning Choreographer and Pro Dancer, Derek Hough and Christopher Scott from “So You Think You Can Dance.” The unique performance will be a tribute to classic Hollywood featuring Hough and Disney Channel’s Jessica Lee Keller from “Teen Beach” as the leads. The piece will also feature 26 additional dancers including a variety of “Dancing With The Stars” Pros.

Afterbuzz TV And Shirley Ballas Break Down DWTS18 Week 8

Below is the new Afterbuzz TV episode for the Dancing With The Stars Quarterfinals. Shirley Ballas was their guest. They first discussed Abby Miller and how she judges. They felt much like we did on her.

Next, they reviewed all the dances and duels. I was noting to myself while listening how Shirley and our Courtney shared similar views about the dances technically (if you haven’t read Courtney’s new power rankings, do so here to see what I mean).

Also, many of you have been wondering if Derek Hough helped with the choreography of the opening number. He did along with Mark and his dancer Meesha. Shirley also plugged Mark’s new music and video. I almost cried during this part for how she explained “Dancing is Mark’s hobby, but, music is his passion”. Beautiful!

Anyway, great show. See if you agree or disagree with them this time and let us know in comments.

Without further ado, our resident poet, Lois, on Dancing With The Stars Season 18’s quarterfinals….

A RE”MARK”ABLE BALLROOM BLAST

A RE”MARK”ABLE BALLROOM BLAST on Monday Night
The opening a RE”MARK”ABLE Ballas and dancing sight

A RE”MARK”ABLE night of dancing lit up the ballroom floor

She surely stirred up the ballroom, creating scenes of her own

PureDWTS Season 18 Quarterfinals Media And Interviews Part 1

Wow, what a night!!! With an exception to Abby Miller, the night and the dances were stellar. I want more! Have we ever had a season where all the couples were so good? Amazing!!! Just in case you need the scores again….

Amy Purdy and Derek Hough: 40 points
Charlie White and Sharna Burgess: 40 points
Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy: 38 points (eliminated)
James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd: 36 points
Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas: 36
Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 36

Then came the celebrity dance duels:
Danica and Val & Meryl and Maks: 34 points
Candace and Mark & Charlie and Sharna: 38 points
James and Peta & Amy and Derek perf: 39 points

And for media starters today, see OK! Magazine as some of the pros commented on Abby Miller after the show. They put it so well. Here is a take with Derek and Sharna’s comments, but, see more at the link.

“I don’t want to dwell on it too much because I want it to be about Amy (Purdy) and what she achieved tonight, which was amazing,” said Derek Hough when asked what he thought of Abby’s teaching style. “But I will just say that for me, when I danced I was surrounded by amazing teachers, people who reinforced me constantly, like life coaches. It made me love dancing. I have longevity in my love for dance. I’m afraid for kids who are exposed to pressure, anxiety, whatever you want to call it. My fear is that they can burn out and they won’t want to dance anymore. I want them to have the same passion and love for something and not burn out.”

Sharna Burgess worries about the long-term affects on Abby’s students, nothing the tough-as-nails teacher is doing nothing to promote their creativity.

“I cannot endorse what she does,” says Sharna. “The thing is, what she’s doing to those kids now is going to affect them for the rest of their lives. As a child you need your creativity harnessed. You need to learn about it and discover it yourself. You need someone who is going to help you do that, not try to put you down every time you try something new.”

Also, here is a fun interview with Charlie and Sharna that took place yesterday before the show. Thanks to Carlos for the find!!

And below is some PopTVDotCom coverage of the after parties…

Ok, more in a bit! Stay tuned!

DWTS Season 18, Week 8 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show (Spoilers)

Okay, due to heavy traffic, we have to institute a few ground rules for tonight show. Most of these are good rules ALL OF THE TIME, and are basic netiquette.

  1. DO NOT hitrefresh every few seconds – in fact, do not hit refresh every five minutes! Read, comment if you like, then walk away from the computer for five to ten minutes. I know this is hard, but it will prevent others from losing their minds trying to read and/or update the site.
  2. DO NOT use the comment section like it’s twitter – it’s not twitter. Make an actual comment with context of who you’re talking about, who you’re talking to (if it applies), etc. Context, and more than one line. If you break this rule more than one time, I start deleting. If you do it a couple times, you’ll find yourself on moderation.  Perhaps for life. 🙂  Keep in mind that if you can’t follow this rule, I can make you follow it.
  3. Try very hard to keep the ugly to a minimum. Think before you post. If you’ve been called out previously on this blog for your behavior, this will be extra important because there’s only so much I will tolerate. I’m not talking about differing opinions, I’m talking about nasty. If I get the sense that you are purposely trolling  (look it up if you’re not sure), I will just block you. No warning other than this one.

Okay, that’s all I can think of. Let the games begin. Take a drink every time ALM is a mean ole beyotch and you’ll really enjoy the show! 😀

Court here, filling in for Heidi, who is running a tad late 🙂 Is it just me, or is Mark sounding an awful lot like Robin Thicke these days?

Oh, I see Abby Lee has her happy face on tonight…NOT.
Good to see Charlie is safe. Mama Spence, however, is worried that Sharna’s bewbs are gonna fall out of her dress during their quickstep.

Charlie kills the quickstep, and both Len & Abby go in for the kill. Tonight is gonna be a loooong night, I’m afraid.

Ok, happy that Charlie got that long-overdue 40, but did anyone else think those were the most incongruous scores/critiques EVER??! The way they were critiquing, I was expecting 8’s. Why pick someone apart if you’re gonna give them a 10? Kinda defeats the purpose…

ETA 1:  Heidi here – I’m back!!  Is it my imagination or are these dances really short. Perhaps it’s just that Danica’s dance took so long to get started.  Ha! Len just copied me. 🙂

Meryl and Maks – Rumba or contemporary? I saw rumba content, but they were skating awfully close to the edge there.   Of course Bruno loves it.  Lord, I’m tired of hearing about their chemistry – and is that CAI justifying her good comments?? She’s recalling Charlie’s rumba – and she’s right about that.  Len’s coming down with CAI…and ABL needs to be put out of our misery. Seriously. LOL…sickled feet. Beyotch – bite me.  Maks: “Can we go now.”  Come on MAKS – if ever you were going to spout off, NOW is the time!!!

ALERT….ALERT…ALERT….for the next 10 minutes I’m going to be a Maks fan.  I might even declare this “Maks day” on the blog. Seriously – MOST of the time I hate his spouting off, but I think this time was beyond appropriate.

ETA 2: I knew Mark would give Candace a good dance to that song. Very nice.  One or two tiny rough spots, but I loved it.

ETA 3: So a Derek fan just asked me if his critics would comment about Val’s smoke machine. :::crickets:::  LOL – as if.

ETA 4: Wait…so Meryl gets an 8 from ALM, but JAMES gets a 10?? And we thought CAI judged with her vajayjay.  Lord have mercy.  I’m okay with Meryl getting an 8 for that….but in that case, James should have had a 7, not a 10.

OMG, Amy and Derek…perfection. And I rarely use that to describe anyone.  But I have to comment on Derek’s face. He was working up a good head of PISSED OFF on Amy’s behalf. I’ve been watching that boy for a long time, but that was his “You diss my girl, I kick your asssss” face. 🙂  I think it’s very good thing for ALM that she didn’t take any unwarranted shots at him.   Anyway, that was a kick ass AT – I expect nothing less from Derek Hough.

ETA 5: Well, can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I think Meryl and Danica got a bit hosed.  Of course, that song is the worst thing I’ve heard on this show in a while, so there’s that too. I tried to block it out and just look at the dancing and I didn’t think it was as bad as 8’s. All 9’s would have been more appropriate.

ETA 6: Wow wow wow….Candace and Charlie!! Excellent dance. I wonder if the producers will blur Sharna’s lips in the skybox for the west coast. 😀   Love it Sharna, keep it coming.

ETA 7: Ouch – that fall was kinda bad…and Derek’s face. And again, I  have to go to Derek’s face during the judging – I don’t know if he realizes it, but he has a face when Abby is talking that says he’s either pissed or disgusted – not sure which. He was pretty vehement a few years ago in his criticism of ALM, either he or Mark called her teaching style “child abuse” and it appears to me that he’s not had a change of heart on that one.

Man…I don’t want any of them to go home at this point.

And the eliminee is….Danica. I’m sad to say I called this one correctly.  🙁  I had no trouble with the site tonight, so I think that means our readers all behaved themselves -thanks ya’ll.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Danica McKellar Won’t Let The Pain Ruin Her Tango On Dancing With The Stars

Danica McKellar says she won’t let the pain from her injury last week ruin their Tango on Dancing With The Stars. Val Chmerkovskiy said “he is going to tailor the dance to her injury.” From ABC

For celebrity duel night, also the quarterfinal round, McKellar told ABC News Radio she isn’t going to let the pain from the injury ruin the tango she and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, have planned.

Chmerkovskiy said he is going to tailor the dance to her injury.

“We’re just going to have to be creative, choreographically, and very careful when we’re working,” he told ABC. “But I definitely don’t want to tone it down, it’s like finish line, pretty much. We’re almost there. We can’t afford to make it too simple.”
