Dance of the Day… Let’s look at some Infamous Alumni…

Throughout the years that I’ve watched Dancing With The Stars, one thing that I’ve absolutely LOVED! was being able to get to know celebrities in a different way than we’ve ever known them. And, I’ve loved learning to actually like, and come to care for, several different celebrities that I thought that I would NOT like at all… Only to find that they’re HUMAN, and that I cared about the people they’ve allowed us to see.

This Dance of the Day post isn’t about them…. But, we’ll see some in a future post.

I’ve decided to take a different approach to the Dance of the Day, and look at those that…. For one reason or another, ended up in a different category than those that we’ve come to love. And….. I guess I’ll explain as I go.

JAKE PAVELKA. I’m starting with Jake, because he is the reason that this post is existing! I will admit that I DON’T watch any of the Bachelor franchise, so my first real exposure of Jake was during the episode of the Bachelor where they first announced the next seasons cast of Dancing With The Stars. And, surprise of surprise, he was announced as a contestant, with his brand new fiancee, Vienna Girardi,in the audience.

According to his IMDB page, he had some bit acting parts, both before and after the Bachelor franchise appeared. He was first a contestant on the Bachelorette, and followed that up with his first run as the Bachelor. From the Bachelor, he gained a spot on DWTS, Season 10, partnered by Chelsie Hightower.

This is what I consider to be his most memorable routines, their Risky Business Cha Cha, which gained them an 8 7 8 for 23 points.

Afterwards…. Jake and Vienna had a rather nasty split…. That’s all I will say, but if you care to review the break up, go to your favorite search engine…. :) From there, he headed to Famous Food, where I couldn’t find any youtube links, and now, he’s on Bachelor Pad. With his Ex, and her new boyfriend.
Recently Jake appeared on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. I tried to listen to this several times, honestly, and haven’t been able to listen to the whole thing, because he didn’t endear me during DWTS, and neither he nor Vienna are very truthful in my opinion. If you feel like listening to the whole thing, go here. It’s rather interesting. Especially the part about possibly returning as Bachelor again….

Okay….. I promise to NOT go off onto the soapbox again…. I hope.

Next up, Lawrence Taylor! Lawrence danced with Edyta Sliwinska in Season 8, and yes, during his run on the show, did seem charming. In week 7, he performed the waltz with Edyta to Journey’s Open Arms, and this was the week the contestant designed the costumes, and he chose to “put Edyta in clothes” only to have her become tangled up in them during the dance.

After he left…. Well, “our” LT was arrested, and convicted of a crime against a female, and was sentenced, and labeled. You can read a bit about it here or visit your favorite search engine. It’s not something that I want to hear again, or bring up here, I would like to leave this haven a “safe zone.” But, it definitely put L.T. among my list of “Infamous DWTS Alumni.”

And last for today, David Alan Grier…. Another season 8 Alumni. I was curious at the beginning of the season, how things would work between David and Carrie Ann, since both were on In Living Color…. But as it turned out, she didn’t end up his favorite judge. Things really seemed well during his run, and we saw this Viennese Waltz on week 5, with his partner, she of the awesome boobage, Kym Johnson. They danced to “I Put a Spell on You” by Nina Simone and got 7 8 7 for 22 points.

HOWEVER! This was also the week they were eliminated, and he showed some “bad sport.” THIS is why I’ve put him on my “infamous” list…. He put the sweet and wonderful Kym into a very bad spot at the end of this interview, and he really has some bad stuff to say to the judges…. It’s safe to watch, they censored it.

Who would you put onto your “infamous dancers” list? And why? Do you agree with those that are here, and who would you add?

And, for another post….. Who was it that most surprised you, that you were positive that you would HATE that you ended up liking?

Dancing with the Stars – Who Wore it Better, Part V

…and the fun continues! Alright fashion critics, have at it ;-)

On a side note, we have to give a very special thanks to our friend Marcela, who frequents this site all the way from Brazil! Marcela was kind enough to share with us many dittoes that she had found, and even sent us side-by-side pictures of them.  Marcela, here’s a big “Obrigado!” from all of us here at Pure DWTS…you rock! :-D

Battle of the black & white floral-print ballgown: Brooke’s quickstep with Derek in season 7 vs. Cheryl in the pro dance to Michael Buble in season 9

Courtney: Hmmmm. I’m not hugely fond of this dress, so I think it’s making it hard for me to figure out who it looks better on.  I think it probably suits Brooke’s body a bit better (surprise, surprise…that woman could make a burlap sack look good!), but I’m not a fan of the severely pulled-back side bun hair they gave her.  I think it doesn’t suit Cheryl’s body quite as well, but I think her loose, carefree hair & hoop earrings better suit the breezy feel of the dress.  I dunno…I’m defaulting to Heidi.

Heidi: Does liking Brooke’s partner better count?? :-)  Seriously though, look at both of the men – I think you’ll note that the men’s outfits match the hairstyles on the ladies. They made Brooke much more formal, to complement Derek’s dinner jacket and bow tie and slick hair, whereas Cheryl’s hair is more loose and flowy which compliments Jonathan’s lack of jacket and undone bow tie. BOTH couples are very finished, for what they are trying to portray.

The winner: Have to call it a draw for two complete ensembles – men included. ;-)

Battle of the gold-fringe Latin dress: Chelsie’s salsa with Ty in season 8 vs. Nicole’s jive with Derek in the season 10 finale

Heidi: Derek and Nicole’s Jive was just fan-flippin-tastic – and that includes seriously rocking that dress. Chelsie might be too sweet to be that fierce. And that ain’t no jive talkin’. ;-)

Courtney: Now as fierce as both these ladies look in this sparkler, I’ve gotten give it to Nicole – she just slightly out-fierces Chelsie with that fabulous hair flip.  That jive was seriously awesome – and Tina herself sure knows how to rock a gold fringe dress!

The winner: Nicole, by a Tina Turner ‘tude

Battle of the hot pink, cut-out ballgown with matching gloves: Kym’s foxtrot with David in season 8 vs. Melissa’s preseason photo shoot with Mark in season 9

Courtney: This gown is just adorable – reminds me so much of Marilyn Monroe’s dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes…which is why I think it looks so cute on both of these lovely blonde ladies ;-) Love Melissa’s 40’s-esque finger waves, but I also love Kym’s tighter curls.  In the end, though, I just have to give this one to Kym – while I don’t particularly remember David well that season (except for his rather embarrassing exit speech), I do remember Kym just working it in this foxtrot, and this dress just sparkling away as she moved.  Therefore, I must give this one to our favorite Aussie blonde :-D

Heidi: They both do look awesome. But when you mention Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it made me think of Marlee Matalin’s dance with Derek, Mark, Fabian Sanchez and Genya Mazo and I ran to check the video. Nah. Not the same dress as Marlee. ;-) ANYway, I have to give it to Kym too – that body is hard to beat and I just like her personality better anyway.

The winner: Kym, for being the Aussie answer to Marilyn herself!

Battle of the itty-bitty, coral one-sleeve Latin dress: Edyta’s cha-cha with Jason in season 6 vs. Julianne’s pro dance with Derek to Jennifer Hudson in season 7

Heidi: That Julianne had the guts to wear a dress AFTER Edyta wore it – well, I have to hand it to her. Girl is brave. Of course she works it just as well as Edyta, so why not? I like it better with Julianne’s coloring, I think.

Courtney: This has got to be one of the TINIEST costumes I’ve ever seen on the show – and that’s saying something, considering that Edyta is, to quote Lawrence Taylor “allergic to clothes”, hehe.  Not that I blame Edyta at all – as I’ve said before, if I had a body that fabulous, you’d have to put me in a nudist colony, because I would be naked ALL THE TIME.  However, this dress looks too much to me like many of the others Edyta has worn, while the look is a little more surprising on Julianne – the coral looks surprisingly flattering on her.  So kudos to Julianne for out-Edytaing Edyta!

The winner: Julianne for bravery. ;-)

Battle of the yellow & orange overdye Latin dress: Julianne’s salsa with Cody in season 7 vs. Lisa’s quickstep with Mayo in the new pro contest in season 8

Courtney: I found it very, very strange that they opted to put Lisa in a Latin dress to do a quickstep – I guess they were trying to fit the whole “Walking on Sunshine” theme with the colors of the dress.  But it just looks so mismatched up to Mayo – he’s so covered & dark and she’s so…bare.  And I hate that shaggy haircut of hers – I feel like it totally obscures her face.  Now Julianne, on the other hand, is just an absolute delight in this dress – can you believe this was only about a week after her appendectomy?!

Heidi: Girlfriend did one hell of a jive with Derek a week after her appendectomy, so yes, I can believe it. ;-) This one is kind of a toss up for me – Lisa cut off the tail of the dress and the colors look better with her tan, but her hair and her overinflated lips get me every time. Love Julianne, but she added a huge flower up near the shoulder that I can’t get behind, plus it took me a minute or two to figure out that the tail of the dress was wrapped around her right leg. Don’t know what she’s got around her left ankle. Anyway, I guess I find the flower and the tail less egregious than the hair and the lips. ;-)

The winner: Julianne, for normal lips.

Battle of the fringed, zebra-print Latin dress: Mel B’s jive with Maks in season 5 vs. Lacey’s preseason photo shoot in season 7

Heidi: I kind of find this dress awful. And Lacey didn’t follow the “take one thing off” rule before she left the house. ;-) That said, I like it better on her because of the gloves and the red hair. Add in that I am SO NOT a Mel fan and well….Lacey wins. ;-)

Courtney: Another dress I just don’t particularly care for – looks like something off the sale rack at Wet Seal.  However, I do think it fits both ladies’ feisty personalities well.  I guess I’ll go with Lacey – the streaks of red in her hair offer a nice pop of color to offset the black & white in the dress.

The winner: Lacey…just barely. This dress sucks.

Battle of the red, cut-out, ruffly Latin dress: Shannon’s mambo with Derek in season 6 vs. Kym’s preseason photo shoot in season 7

Courtney: Wow, this batch is really a mixed bag for me – I’m either loving or hating these dresses.  This, unfortunately falls into the latter category – BLECH.  Am I the only one that thought that Shannon looked terribly awkward in almost every costume they put her in? Aggghhh, and that hair – looks like they were trying to style it like her ex-husband’s (look him up – Joe Reitman.  Eek!) Kym does a decent job of making a crappy dress look acceptable, so I’ll go with her.

Heidi: I think Shannon WAS awkward in a lot of the dresses. This one is funny because she had lots of padding in the bra AND in the butt, and she wasn’t afraid to tell EVERYONE. It made all the media that week very entertaining, especially when Derek is pulling down the back of her dress to show reporters and she then proceeds to rip his shirt open. And to think they tried to tell people they were just friends. Um, right. ;-) I also have to give it up to Derek for once again attempting a camouflage (with all those ruffles) a lack of hip action. Despite me enjoying this dress on Shannon for all the backstage reasons, it’s pretty clear that Kym just wears it better. The confidence will get you every time. I bet Kym didn’t need the padding either. ;-)

The winner: Duh, Kym! Even though this dress sucks too. ;-)

Pssst! First time here? Then you should definitely check out parts I, II, III, & IV of our “Who Wore it Better?” series! :-D

Dancing with the Stars 2009 Music – Etta James, Demi Lovato and Le Reve

In quite a surprise, David and Kym were sent home on Dancing with the Stars. Seems like Steve-O (and probably Lacey) along with Ty (and probably Chelsie) have large fan bases. Interesting that the two professional dancers that bucked the score were on So You Think You Can Dance and brought over many fans from that show.

On a different note, take a look at the special guest music from the Dancing with the Stars results show.

Etta James sang the song “At Last” Etta James - At Last! (Remastered) - At Last while Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy performed.

Demi Lovato sang the song “La La Land” Demi Lovato - Don't Forget - La la Land while special guests Benji Schwimmer (So You Think You Can Dance winner) and Torri Smith performed.

They also had a Macy’s Stars of Dance performance by Le Rêve.

Dancing with the Stars Viennese Waltz and Paso Doble Music

Tonight’s dances were the viennese waltz and paso doble. 2 really interesting dances. They don’t usually have the same wow factor as some of the other dances(except for the Paso Doble sometimes), but the music is always nice. Plus, seeing Steve-O do a viennese waltz is priceless.

I’ll look at doing a future Dancing with the Stars vote where you can vote for the top 3 and another one where you can vote for all of your favorite Dancing with the Stars celebrities.

Dancing with the Stars Premiere Thoughts

I originally planned to do a full analysis of the new couple on DWTS similar to what I did for Belinda and Jonathan. Unfortunately, life got busy on me and I’m not going to have time to do a couple by couple post.

However, here’s some quick thoughts about each DWTS couple.

Belinda Carlisle is paired with Jonathan Roberts – see here
David Alan Grier is paired with Kym Johnson – I was a little diappointed by this couple.  I guess I just expect more from Kym.  She’s done so many wonderful things in the past.  David Alan Grier was smooth and natural on his feet, but it was almost too smooth for me.  I hope that Kym turns it back up a notch next week.  19 is not a bad start, but plenty of room to improve if Kym finally wants a mirror ball trophy.
Holly is paired with Dmitry Chaplin – While the show doesn’t change the scores based on the time to prepare, I do.  I think Holly is going to do well on the show and look great next to Dmitry.  However, you could kind of see that the routine just wasn’t as polished as some of the others.  I’m looking for great things next week from this couple and a big improvement over their score of 18.
Shawn Johnson is paired with Mark Ballas – Shawn was the real shocker of the night for me. She did so much better than Cody did last season. Cody looked like an 18 year old should. Shawn looked much older than her young 17. I give Mark a lot of credit for this. Also, all dressed up in her ball gown she looked so much older. 23 and her popularity as an olympic athlete means she’s a strong candidate to go all the way to the final 3.
Lil’ Kim is paired with Derek Hough – Lil’ Kim just made me laugh with her dedication.  I’m not sure how well that will do in getting her votes, but I’m all for second chances.  Lil’ Kim and Derek actually look better together than I would have expected.  She did seem to try to hard at points, but her 21 score is a decent sign for Derek and Lil’ Kim fans.
Gilles Marini is paired with Cheryl Burke – Gilles really surprised me. His dancing looked much better than I would have expected. I was a little shocked by him basically running his fingers down Cheryl’s chest, but then I remembered that he was French. His strong score of 24 means him and Cheryl will be around for a while to come.
Ty Murray is paired with Chelsie Hightower – Ty has gotten hammered way too much.  I don’t think he was as bad as everyone made it out to be.  I’m a huge fan because of the lashing he’s taken.  I’m sure his main motivation was to do this with Jewel and so it’s really unfortunate that she’s off the show.  I hope by some miracle he can stay another week.  People like him are what makes the show unique and interesting and I’d love to see him kind of grow as a ballroom dancer.
Steve-O is paired with Lacey Schwimmer – Samantha Harris finally asked a good question when she asked Lacey if she was going to bring out her bad girl side.  I missed Lacey’s edge and I think Steve-O’s fans want some edge as well.  Let’s hope they can provide it next week.  I will say that Steve-O brought a little man on the show and we love little men.
Melissa Rycroft puts her troubles behind her as she hits the dancefloor
Melissa is paired with Tony Dovolani – For 2 days she did great. I’m sure controversy will swirl around her being a trained dancer, but ballet and ballroom are quite different. Plus, she should have an advantage, because she only had 2 days to get ready. A lot of people are planning to vote for her out of sympathy. I guess a lot of girls can relate to being dumped by a guy.
Denise Richards is paired with Maksim Chmerkovskiy – Similar to Kym, I expected more from Maks.  He’s one of the best and most entertaining choreographers, but him and Denise didn’t have that spark.  I’m not sure Denise ever will come out of it and show us something else.  I hope her acting kicks in and shows us some fire.
Lawrence Taylor is paired with Edyta Sliwinska – I expected to not really fall in love with Lawrence and sure enough I’m left with a bland taste in my mouth.  I love Edyta, but this couple isn’t going to do anything for me this season.  Neither here nor there for me and I won’t have any problem when Lawrence is gone.
Chuck Wicks is paired with Julianne Hough – I’m sure that a number of Julianne fans will not like me saying this, but Chuck and Julianne really look good together.  Waltz was a perfect dance for showing off the “perfect” looking couple.  Chuck did seem quite tight through the dance.  I think that we underestimate how hard it will be for Julianne to be the teacher to Chuck.  Chuck needs to improve and relax if Julianne wants a third trophy, but 20’s a decent start.
Steve Wozniak is paired with Karina Smirnoff – So, you already know that I’m biased to Steve.  He is awkward and says crazy things, but that’s what makes him great.  The Woz is the Woz and nobody’s going to change that.  My favorite line from the night was when he said that 7000 kids at a robotics competition were yelling Vote Woz.  Don’t be surprised if the Woz lasts longer than you’d expect despite his low score of 13.
