Diana Nyad Writes About Her Journey On Dancing With The Stars

Diana Nyad wrote about her complete journey on Dancing With The Stars. She had such an amazing time and loved the cast so much, that she had withdrawals after being eliminated. Here is more from the Huffington Post….

I found each and every pro and celebrity warm and caring and embracing of the moment, as were Henry and I. Most of us would practice at the same location. We’d help each other with both the emotional stuff going on and with our actual routines. Sean Avery said to me one day: “I suck at this!” Sean’s an athlete, both intense and demanding of himself. And I said to him: “OK, let’s say you do suck. So why don’t you go out there and suck double time?” And Sean had similar advice for me. He appeared sullen to some. I really liked him.

Derek Hough showed me a great deal of respect. He took the time to watch The Other Shore documentary and welled up with tears in telling me how much the story moved him. I have read several tweets saying too bad I’m not still on the show because, after Derek constantly having talented partners, it would be some kind of poetic justice to wind up with me on the switch week — finally a true challenge for him. Sorry to disappoint, Derek.

Who can doubt that Meryl Davis is arguably the most talented dancer ever to perform on the show? She is simply dazzling. She and Maks make their complex routines appear effortless. I am in awe. Whenever one of the stars can allow their pro partner to show off, then you’ve got magic working on the floor. As a matter of fact, as an unabashed fan, I can safely declare this to be the highest level of talent among the stars in the history of the show. Along with Meryl, James is smooth as butter. Charlie is light as air, so very debonaire. Danica executes such a high technical and artistic level every time she steps on the floor. Candace has body control and expression in spades. And Amy Purdy is nothing short of miraculous.

Henry and I pretty much knew the depth of the field our very first morning together, for the first Good Morning America announcement of the cast. We were in the make-up trailer at 1:30am. Charlie and pro Tony Dovolani were kidding around doing some triple spins on the toes of their sneakers, landing with a sharp staccato pose for cameras at the end of the spins. Henry and I needed no words. Then, Meryl came over to take a piece of fruit from the buffet table. She just can’t help her grace. She lightly spun, lifted a pointed toe toward the ceiling as she took a slice of cantaloupe. Again, no need for words between me and Henry. Just then, in humorous relief, Billy Dee struggled by with a cane. Surely, we thought, there’s one we can beat. But we were soon to learn none of that mattered. All we could do is live our time together, Henry and I, in fierce and utter conviction. And so we did.

I loved what she said about Derek! More at the Huffington Post. Thanks to Lara for sending.

Carrie Ann Inaba Writes Of What Makes DWTS So Incredible, Switch Up Couples Find Out Partners Today

Carrie Ann Inaba writes all about Dancing With The Stars last night at Parade.com. Below she talks of judging and also reminds us of what makes Dancing With The Stars so incredible in a “Dancing Democracy” way. She also mentions how the couples find out today who their new partners are going to be for the upcoming week! More below….

So, let’s get to the dances! Wow! I was truly impressed with the dances last night. Normally, the “most memorable year” night of dancing is the most challenging to judge. When a star has just shared an intimate detail of their life, a vulnerable time, or a challenging time, and then they dance poorly, it’s truly heart-wrenching as a judge to have to give them a bad score. This is often the time of the season where the fans of the stars will get extremely protective over their “favorites.” It’s completely understandable and beautiful, but this is when it can get very negative on social media because the fans will misunderstand the judgement of the dance for the judgement of the person. Now, we don’t judge the person; we judge the dancing and the performance. And most of the time, we care just as much as everyone else about these special, talented people who have courageously taken on this challenge to be on Dancing with the Stars. But if we don’t judge them with a critical and professional eye, there’s no point to the competition. And I’d like to remind everyone that what makes DWTS so incredible is that it is a combination of scoring and the audience and viewer votes that decides the fates of our celebs. It’s a democracy! It’s a Dancing Democracy. So vote. Oh, speaking of voting. Today is the day they tell the couples who their new partner is going to be for the upcoming week! Talk about a “SWITCH UP.” After last night’s incredible performances I almost don’t want to see them switch, but at the same time, how very interesting and what an amazing experiment it is to do this. It will be quite the psychological thriller if you ask me. I won’t know until Monday as well…and I’m chomping at the bit.

For a personal review of each couple, see Parade.com.

DWTS Season 18, Week 3 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show! (Spoilers)

Geez. George Pennachio says there is a surprise in the first half hour.

Like we need more surprises. :::sigh:::

I know! Let’s drink every time there is a camera screw up. Wait…I don’t have enough booze….

Great opening dance by James. He got a tiny bit off time in a couple spots….but this guy is a contender, for reals.

ETA: So Billy Dee is out due to injury. No more elimination or not?? I suspect not since they aren’t doing that stupid elmin stuff before each dance, thank god.

Great dance by Nene. And line of the night goes to Derek Hough: “This lil’ munchkin is ready for you!!” Right to Nene. 🙂

ETA2: Forgot to add to my last update that they made it pretty clear that the switch is for one week then they go back to their original partners. It sounds like no more voting – I’m afraid to hope for that to be true.

Liked Danica and Val’s dance very much, but she struck me as a bit melodramatic and not quite real in her package. I’m afraid that’s just her.

ETA3: Beautiful dance by Meryl and Maks but that was in NO WAY a foxtrot…yet no one said a word about it. Bet they would have if Meryl was dancing with Derek. Interesting how now the couples are definitely going back to each other after next week AND they get 10s on a non-foxtrot. I wonder if someone had a fit? 🙂 Besides most of the fans, I mean. I doubt they listen to us, so what happened? Not that I’m complaining about that part – I’m glad.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing with the Stars Season 18, Week 2 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Ah, the week of switch up voting. Is someone trying to make me hate this show?? I mean really.  A logical person can look at the voting contest and sense a total clusterf*^k – that the producers will count the votes in which ever of the 6 or 8 ways gives them the results they desire. But I’ll let Courtney go into more detail on that – it just annoys me, as do the Maks/Val fans who insist that Derek fans are only voting to see Derek with Meryl so he can win again. Uh, hello, but I think most Derek fans neither expect nor WANT him to stay with Meryl. I know I speak for a good number of them when I say – we better get Amy back or there will be hell to pay.

Anyway, the switch up is mildly relevant to this post because the voting for it could play spoiler in one couples hopes for the mirror ball trophy. I always wonder if fans who do the twitter voting are good multi-taskers.  I know I am, but Vogue says it’s cuz I’m a Gemini…or something like that. 😀 Anyway, there is some serious spamming going on. Like Design a Dance, it’s not the number of fans you have, but how badly those fans want you to win.  And how good they are at Spamming. Actually, that could be said for the whole show.  🙂  So, do we think that someone is going to be a shocking elimination because their fans were too busy tweeting?? Amy? Meryl? Danica? Nene?

I put those four out there because the Derek fans and the C-bros plus Tony fans have been hitting it hard on the twitter vote. Amy has the smallest fanbase on her own, but Derek’s fanbase is the biggest of the pros, judging by Twitter followers.  I would hazard that Meryl is safe, but it’s possible any of the other three could be a victim, I suppose.

But let’s look at the scores and see just how likely that is.

Week 2 Table 1

Dang, they put a huge spread between Billy Dee and the next lowest group comprised of Nene, Drew and Candace.  The judges REALLY want to get rid of him. Well, he was not a great dancer. Entertaining, but not great. And oh my gosh am I developing a straight girl crush on Emma or what? She impressed the hell out of me in her work with Billy Dee – seriously, she’s fantastic.  Anyway, I think the judges have finally realized that if they believe someone is the worst dancer, they can’t be whipping out 6s and 7s left and right, they have to get serious. But where they serious enough??  Look at the table below, which gives you all the matchups for week 2.

Week 2 Table 2

You’ll see that Billy Dee needs a seemingly large number of votes to get past either Nene, Drew or Candace – about 24.6k votes per million votes cast. You might remember that he needed nearly 20k to stick around over Diana and Sean last week. What’s another 5k?  Well, I would hazard a guess that Drew and Candance, at least, are a good bit more popular than either Diana and Sean. But just how popular is Billy Dee??  Nene is the one I can’t put my finger on.  Twitter followers is certainly an indication of popularity, but that does NOT always translate into votes on DWTS. In fact, it often doesn’t.

I could be wrong, but I really see the only one vulnerable to Billy Dee  is Nene.  Why? Well, I think that Drew and Candace surely have enough juice to get past Nene and keep Billy Dee away.  But what about the next level up? Cody? Surely Cody has a shit ton of fangirls and he’ll be safe for a while, right? I think so – but note that Nene only needs 4k votes to go by Cody. Since I don’t think that Nene is doing that much better than Amy and Danica in votes, and Billy Dee certainly isn’t, I think those two, along with Meryl and Charlie are certainly safe. James best keep that score up there or he could be in trouble.

Anyway, no sense in drawing it out. I think that Billy Dee is likely to go home. If the Star Wars fans are out in full force, then I think Nene is the one most likely to leave. Candace wouldn’t shock me, neither would Cody since all the talk seems to be Amy/Meryl/Charlie – but I really think it’s going to be Billy Dee or Nene.  Billy Dee first, Nene second.  We find out soon!

PureDWTS Guest Poem: “Swinging On A Star”

And below is Lois with another one of her fabulous poems highlighting Dancing With The Stars Season 18 Week 2….

SWINGING ON A BALLROOM STAR!

The cast opened the show SWINGING ON A BALLROOM STAR!
The shimmied, they shook, swinging to the beat, raising the bar

A gasp was heard far and wide, a double elimination the surprise
The pendulum was swinging, time was short, they did surmise

The couples collected their dancing thoughts they were in shock
The time for two couples was rapidly tick-tick-ticking off the clock

Drew and Cheryl brought down the house with a Jive full of steam
Sharna and Charlie’s Tango emotional, powerful, a beautiful scene

Derek, Amy’s Swing gave the pendulum grand, spectacular ticks
Meryl and Max’s Swing explosive, high powered, full of shticks

Billy Dee, Emma Tangoed with two beautiful dancing girls, so sweet
Peta and James burst on to the floor, stepping heartily to the beat

Diana and Henry Cha-Chaed came out swinging with red-hot flair
Danica and Val danced a Salsa sleek and sultry in the ballroom air

Sean and Karina performed a Salsa with a flirty, flamboyant tone
Candace, Mark displayed a Rumba sensual as if they were alone

Cody, Witney Tangoed with beautiful lines and a walk to the moon
Tony, NeNe were Jiving to the beat, with each other they did swoon

As the night wore on the pendulum was ticking the final ticks for two
Swinging back and forth Diana, Henry and Karina and Sean were blue

The double elimination, shocking surprise, two should have gone far
Heads held high, were proudly SWINGING ON A BALLROOM STAR!

Afterbuzz With Elena Grinenko Review DWTS Season 18 Week 2

Below is Afterbuzz with a new review for Dancing With The Stars Season 8 Week 2. Elena Grinenko joins them this time. It’s interesting getting her perspective on Charlie and Meryl especially being she’s helped them with choreography with their ice skating in the past. I loved how they were speechless at first when they started talking on Amy and Derek. Their conversation about Tony being critical with Carrie Ann was interesting too. Same with their thoughts about Sean being eliminated. They were disappointed like many of us. Anna said watching Sean’s progress with Karina could have been like watching a raw stone turning into a diamond. So true. Great show this week and I love Kristyn’s dress. 😀 Let us know what you think and if you agree with them…
