PureDWTS Power Rankings – The Dirty Dancing Edition!

You guys asked, and I delivered – you better like it, though, cause I set aside my usual Wednesday night viewing of The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo to watch this turd, and it’s three hours of my life that I won’t get back. I knew up front it likely wouldn’t be that great (and definitely wouldn’t touch the original), but man – I would even go so far as to call this one a FESTERING turd, it was so bad. If you haven’t yet watched it, here’s my recommendation: don’t. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, delete it from your DVR and forget it ever existed.  Trust me when I say that there’s next to nothing redeeming about it (except for a few musical performances, which you can listen to on Spotify or iTunes – I’ve also reviewed the soundtrack below), and if you’re a fan of the original (or, y’know, just a fan of logic/cohesive plotlines/decent storytelling), it will likely just piss you off. You’ve been warned. Also, there are spoilers ahead – although if you heed my advice about this movie being likely to just piss you off, anyway, you may be thankful for said spoilers.  Proceed if you want.

UPDATE: I posted these on Twitter, but for those not on Twitter, I had to share – some of the tweets in response to the movie are HILARIOUS 😛 Both People and Buzzfeed compiled lists of their favorites. My personal favorite? “@ABC You could have remade Gone with the Wind with the cast of The Big Bang Theory and it would have been better than #DirtyDancing!” #dead Read more..

Derek Hough talks Lifts, Rumba and Jennifer Grey in New TV Guide Blog

We’ve had lots of whiners comments about why Derek didn’t get docked for the lift he did in his rumba with Bindi, and comments about the lack of rumba content – mainly just for Derek although a lot of other couples had the same issues (no surprise there, right?) – and Derek does us a favor and explains what HE was told when preparing for the dance. And he shows, once again, that he’s pretty well connected in Hollywood. 🙂 From TV Guide:

I texted Jennifer immediately afterward and she was like, “Love it! That was great!” Kenny Ortega also texted me and was super pumped about it. I’m glad they both loved it. We really tried to honor the original dance as much as we could. I know some of you were worried that we would be docked for a lift in the rumba since that’s not allowed, but we all had a lot of leeway in our choreography because it was about paying tribute to these iconic dances. We did some rumba in the beginning, but the dance was by no means a rumba! We were all told the rules were going to be loose so we didn’t have to be concerned about that. Now you may be wondering why they didn’t just give us a mambo since that’s the dance in the movie, but I’m kinda glad they gave us the rumba. We got it over with!

This week, we have the Argentine tango. We’re dancing to “Cry Little Sister.” With Bindi, we’ve seen the sweet side of her obviously. This is gonna be the fierce, sexy, strong side of her. I’m excited for everyone to see that. She totally gets into character and I think it’s gonna be good.

I suspected he would rather have had the other song, which makes me very curious about how the songs were handed out. Bindi, as the person with the highest cumulative score, should have had first choice. We’ll have to wait and see how that went down. Or how they portray it went down, in any case.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

PureDWTS Season 21, Week 6 – Top 5 Complaints About “The Lift” And Why They’re Kinda Dumb

As I mentioned earlier on Twitter – I find it funny how all of the armchair dance critics just seemed to come out of the woodwork and point out everything that was wrong with “the lift” in the past 48 hours or so 😛 Every one of them was quick to point out Derek’s “shaking arms”, Bindi’s “bad posture”, or offered up examples of others who did “a much better job”. Just one question for, critics: you have attempted this lift yourself, haven’t you? I mean, for you guys to be so critical of it yourself, I assume you’ve researched it extensively and have honed the technique enough in order to offer up intelligent arguments about everything Derek & Bindi did that was just “sooooo wrong”? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Fortunately, I’m actually uniquely qualified to talk about it, as I HAVE done this lift, and my senior kinesiology thesis in college was a 25-page analysis on how to do the lift from Dirty Dancing.  After one very long semester of hours logged in the lab with a crashmat and my partner (and a few injuries), we got it down to a science, and wrote a very arcane paper full of physics & kinesiology jargon that explained how to do it – and we got an A 🙂 Now, as it has been quite a few years since I graduated, and the computer I had from college has since crashed, I was unable to dig up a copy of my original paper (I even went so far as to email my professor to see if she had a copy – turns out, she’s on sabbatical this semester). However, I still remember a lot of what I said in the paper, and I doubt many of you care about things such as concentric/eccentric muscle contractions – so I tried to condense it as much as possible here, and make it relevant to DWTS. So I decided to tackle the top 5 complaints I’ve been hearing about the lift, and explain why I think Bindi & Derek actually did a damn good job, given the circumstances. Read more..

DWTS Derek Hough And Bindi Irwin Practice The Dirty Dancing “The Lift” (Photos), Rehearsal Interview, And More

If you haven’t seen pictures of Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin rehearsing “the lift” for their “Dirty Dancing” dance, see E! News. The New York Post and the Daily Mail have even more. They are amazing!! To read and see more including a new rehearsal interview with ET, a discussion on whether a slower version Of “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” will work (there is a piano version I love that would be perfect in my opinion!!), Derek’s blog, pics of Jennifer Grey arriving to rehearsals, screen caps galore from last week (Heidi is outdoing herself), and lots more see Pure Derek Hough.

PureDWTS Season 21, Week 6 – “Iconic Dance Week” Predictions

So I think we had some pretty good discussion, both here and on Twitter, about what dances from music videos, movies, and stage that we each think are “iconic” – so why not do a prediction post? 🙂

I’ve included what we know so far (check out Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What” for more details); songs that have gotten used in the past that might crop up again (because we all know they love reusing songs); songs that could crop up again, but probably won’t because they were used so recently; and songs that I, Court, would love to see used 🙂 Read more..

Dirty Dancing Delayed, DWTS Pro Derek Hough Screen Tested For Role…and A Bit of Rock of Ages

For those dancing fans hoping for another “Dirty Dancing” remake to happen soon, don’t count on it as plans have been delayed for another year due to casting issues. Below is more from Deadline.com. Note the mention on Dancing With The Stars pro Derek Hough and how he screen tested for the movie as did Lea Michele, Liana Liberato, and Nikki Yanofsky.

The remake of the 1987 Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey film was scheduled to be released in July 2013, but now the movie is off the studio’s release dance card at least until 2014. Kenny Ortega, who was a choreographer on the original, is attached to direct the film. No cast had been announced. However Deadline has learned that Glee’s Lea Michele, Trespass’ Liana Liberato and Canadian singer Nikki Yanofsky were screen tested as were Brothers & Sisters’ Luke Grime, Nashville Star’s Justin Gaston and Dancing With the Stars’ Derek Hough.

So, if they are seriously considering Derek Hough as the male lead (which I and many of you would love. He’d be perfect!), could they be waiting for him to be available until after the Dancing With The Stars All-star season happens? It makes a person wonder? I hope so as he just has to do the All-star season. It wouldn’t be right to do it without him. Let’s get Heidi’s thoughts…

Heidi: No, they aren’t going to wait for Derek. As big a fan as I am, that’s not the hold up. They would make him choose if that were the issue, or they would pick someone else.  For one thing, I don’t really believe that Derek is still contractually tied to DWTS beyond a season to season basis – it’s been NINE seasons. Pretty sure he can go do something else if he wants to – Julianne did after what? Five?  Anyway, another article I read from Variety said that Lionsgate bought another company (or was bought, can’t remember) and it said that they now have a very full slate of movies in the pipeline. It implied that was the reason for the delay. I think other articles assumed it was casting issues.

And I say NO to Lea Michele, although she has the right look for it. 🙂

Cross Posted from Pure Derek Hough – Derek and Julianne (and Ryan) at the Rock of Ages Premiere:

Julianne looks good, although that’s not my favorite color on her. Derek? There are no words. 🙂  Thanks to @n_s_23_23 for these.

Jennifer Grey On DWTS, Derek Hough, And Judging Strictly Come Dancing

This weekend, Jennifer Grey is appearing on the UK version of the show as a stand-in judge for Len Goodman. She’s hopes to “bring honesty” to the panel. In a new promo interview with the BBC, Jennifer talks of what it was like to do Dirty Dancing and how Patrick Swayze got her the role. She also speaks about doing Dancing With The Stars in the US and a little of what she went through with her partner, Derek Hough. Great article. You can read more in a take from Film News below.

Jennifer says despite her starring role in Dirty Dancing, she is not a natural performer.

“Derek was frustrated because I’m not a dancer. I was only a weekend one. I put on Michael Jackson on my boom box,” she smiled. “I was a lover of dance.”

Jennifer confessed the show was hard work. The Golden Globe-nominated star says rehearsals were gruelling and often left her feeling vulnerable.

“It’s about embracing the opportunity and facing your fears. You have to dig so deep,” she recalled.

“Each week I didn’t feel ready. I could not get through a dress rehearsal without crying or some sort of drama. It’s very intense.”

Jennifer is appearing on the UK version of the show this weekend as a stand-in judge. The 51-year-old hopes to bring honesty to the panel of Strictly Come Dancing.

“I’m a really judgemental person!” she laughed.

“I have so much compassion, and I’m going to be really honest.”

Picture above is of Jennifer and Kenny Ortega at the 2011 Rising Stars Gala on Oct. 29th. You can view more pictures of her at this event at Zimbio.com.

DWTS Ricki Lake, Derek Hough, And Jennifer Grey Attend Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater L.A. Rising Stars Gala

Below are new some pictures which show off Ricki Lake’s new figure courtesy of the Daily Mail. Ricki attended the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles Annual Rising Stars Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California this week. Derek and Jennifer Grey were also at the event. Wouldn’t it have been fun to listen to the conversation these three had?

ADDING: People.com also have a new article up where Ricki talks about how losing weight has helped her sex life. Derek commented on it as well. LOL More below….

“When I get home [from rehearsals], I train horizontally,” she said. “[My fiancé] has noticed a difference in my stamina over the last couple of weeks.”

But a bashful Derek Hough, 26 – who stood by his partner’s side as she dished about her deets between the sheets – tried to cut the conversation short.

“Derek knows all about [my sex life],” Lake admitted unashamedly, as Hough turned his head. “He hears about it. Derek and I have gotten to know each other, so, you know, I share stuff with him.”

Hough, who stayed mostly mum on the taboo topic, would only say, “I guess that means I’m not working her hard enough during rehearsals. I want her to go home and collapse.”
