DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Pam Anderson Edition

You know the drill by now, kids – go here if you want to see the previous editions of this series.  I’ve got 2 more editions to get through after this, and very little time to do it in before the premiere 😛

For Pam’s best dance, I picked her famous “9 to 5” quickstep:

And for her worst dance, I picked her waltz:

I’ll be honest: I don’t think Pam is a GREAT dancer.  I’d even go so far as to say that, besides Kelly & Bristol, she is probably one of the weaker dancers this season.  But there is something about her that is just so FUN to watch – she may have been totally missing steps and getting off-time in that quickstep, but to see her bobbing around and smiling so big and having a great time doing it, I was mesmerized.  Ditto for any of her other dances – she got so into the character of her cha-cha, foxtrot, rumba, paso doble, and Argentine tango that it didn’t seem to matter as much to me if she was wobbling awkwardly or missing steps.  She was just fun to watch.  That’s not to say that I was completely able to overlook her snafus, though – on the whole, I really liked Pam, but she always struck me as a bit of a stiff mover, even though she was really quite flexible.  And when she wasn’t able to completely connect to the character of her dance (such as in her waltz), she seemed to look a bit aloof and lost.  Her waltz, while not technically bad, just felt bland and chilly to me.  I get the feeling that she’s someone whose performance hinges greatly upon playing a character – and if she can’t really play one, she’s just kinda…there.

Now unlike some of her cohorts this season, Pam has actually done something in the past year to hone her dance skills that I think may come in handy.  As Vogue (and reader Carlos) reported last summer, Pam competed on the Argentine version of DWTS,  Bailando por un Sueño, with Damian – here they are doing what looks to be a paso doble:

Granted, they did withdraw in week 4, but I still say that any contestant this season that has somehow managed to do some dancing within the last year or so (even better if they did more ballroom) is probably going to have at list a little bit of a leg up on those who haven’t danced at all since their original season.

Court’s verdict: Pam’s not the strongest dancer, but I do think she’s fun to watch – and that could keep her around for at least a little while.  Bonus points if she can connect well to both the dance and her partner.

What do you guys think of Pam? Is she going to stick around awhile…or be out early, as she was in the Argentine verison of the show?

DWTS Who Wore it Better? Part XV – The Pre-Season 14 Edition!

Yep, we’re back to talk fashion for yet another season’s promo pix 🙂 And kids, this batch was a bit of a challenge for even me – at least 3 brand-spanking new dresses that weren’t dittoed, some wacky alterations, weird lighting, and the fact that we don’t have pix of Cheryl & Katherine yet made this edition a little less fun and a little more frustrating.  But alas, it’s here now, so enjoy! And a very special thanks to our reader Manny, who graciously helped us out with the screen cap of Niecy, since Hulu only has season 13 available to stream and the DWTS website has taken down all of the photos from old seasons…grrrrr. *shakes fist at sky*

Battle of the gold, silver, super-sparkly jive dress: Kym’s pre-season 14 photo shoot vs. Kym’s jive with David in season 13

Heidi: I know I’m going to disagree with Court on this one – by choosing the photo shoot version. 🙂 I like the more asymmetrical hem and I like her hair better in that pic. But damn, Kym always looks amazing and she does stick to the similar color pallette much of the time.

Court: Kym has always known what looks good on her (everything) and what doesn’t (not much), but I love how she seems to stick to a lot of nude colors and just lets all the embellishments do the talking.  I remember thinking “Wowwwww…that’s soooo sparrrrrkllllllyyyy!” as she walked down the stairs last season in this number.  But alas, the magic is a bit lost in the whitewash of the photo shoot – so I’m gonna go with jive Kym on this one 🙂

The winner: We love Kym in the nude (colors) 🙂

Battle of the black lace turtleneck tango dress: Bristol’s Argentine tango with Mark in season 11 vs. Martina’s pre-season 14 photo shoot

Court: I think this may actually be the very first ditto of a Bristol costume we’ve ever seen! Although if you’ve seen one Bristol ditto, I think you’ve pretty much seen them all, as this girl wore A LOT of black lace in season 11 – a fact that made my searching though her costumes all the more confusing 😛 But anyway…I gotta say, I’m not really wild about this costume on either woman.  It just seems kinda…dowdy.  But I guess if I had to pick, I’d actually pick Bristol – because I can at least tell it’s a tango costume with the way she’s styled & made up.  Martina…just kinda looks like she’s gesturing for no apparent reason.  But she looks damn good for her age! 🙂

Heidi: I can’t pick…too distracted by Marky’s face in that picture. 🙂 The hell?  Okay, all kidding :::cough::: aside, I have to agree with Courtney. Martina looks fabulous, but Bristol is fully made up for this dress and she wears it pretty well.  I will say, very proud of Martina for going with a dress that is probably more daring on the bottom half than I would have expected.

The winner: Bristol takes this one because we can actually tell what she’s doing. Read more..

Pictures of Brooke Burke Hosting Dancing with the Stars

There were some mixed feelings about Brooke Burke as the host replacing Samantha Harris on Dancing with the Stars in our previous DWTS poll. Plus, I was interested to see if people’s feelings about Brooke have changed since the beginning of the DWTS 2010 season. So, here’s the same poll for people to make their voice heard.

Also, since I’m talking about Brooke Burke, I thought it would be fun to post a bunch of the various outfits that Brooke Burke has been in on this season of DWTS. It seems like the costume department are having a lot of fun dressing up Brooke Burke. Although, the week 7 results outfit is probably the worst outfit I’ve seen on a DWTS host. It’s FUGLY! I call her week 6 results look, the I dream of Genie look. Although, that’s mostly the hair that makes that happen.

Enjoy the pictures of Brooke Burke (Thanks to Marianya for finding them!) (Sorry I’m missing a few weeks)

DWTS Season 10, Week 4 – The Macy’s Stars of Dance

John had spoken about his excitement about this particular Macy’s Stars of Dance, as had Courtney, so I finally got around to the video. Starring the principal ballerina from the NYC Ballet, performing in a routine choreographed by Travis Wall (lately of SYTYCD), and also starring Nuttin’ But Stringz providing the awesome music.

So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing with the Stars Season 10 – The Cast on U-Stream

Well, some of the cast on Chad’s U-stream. It’s a whole lot of nothing but it’s pretty funny. Or I thought so. 🙂 If you don’t want to hear one of the girls say a nasty word (which she is reading off the comments on the U-stream), then this video isn’t for you. 🙂 Featuring Chad, Cheryl, Chelsie, Derek, Jake, Nicole and Erin.

DWTS Season 10 – Bruno and Nicole on George Lopez

Bruno was on George Lopez recently – warning, this interview is not for the easily offended. I found it hilarious, but I can be crass. 🙂

Nicole also on George Lopez – Derek HAS broken the rule at least twice. I have video. 😉 And this girl actually has PIPES. If you don’t believe she’s a trained singer, watch to the end of this video. I’m amazed. Most pop chicks can’t actually sing. I apologize for believing that, Nicole. 🙂

DWTS Season 10, Week 3 – Blogging with the Pros!!

More and more pros blog each week! And a few celebs too! I keep seeing references to Cheryl blogging, but has anyone actually seen a blog from her? I currently know of Maks, Mark, Derek, Nicole and Jake. As always, let me know if I missed someone. I love getting these little glimpses behind the scenes by the people involved. The pros blog I most wanted to see was Maks’ – mainly because of Len’s nasty crack on the results show – and I can’t find it?? Has he not posted yet?

First up, the new blogger on the blogger block – Mark Ballas at Hollyscoop. Mark, dude, I admire your loyalty but it’s kinda obvious that all your favorite dances from Monday night were done by pros (or your new bff EVAN) who happen to be your bestest buds. 🙂

For me stand out performances came from, Nicole and Derek, Evan and Anna, Jake and Chelsie and Erin and Maks, I thought Nicole and Dereks sailor routine was extremely powerful, slick, funny and polished, as a show number it was absolutely outstanding, I thought the 6 from Len was a little over the top, but Len is Len. Ha ha

Moving on to Evan and Anna: So much elegance and Class, Evan is definitely a stand out competitor, I thought he and Anna were excellent and I loved the story line an the concept, everything from the choreography to the costume was pure class, If he can master his right arm in hold, he will be a dangerous competitor for the others.

Derek is blogging at OK! Magazine. He comments at the end that they are doing the Rumba next week. Wonder how Nicole, who is nearly killing herself making sure no one thinks she’s hooking up with Derek, will handle that? And my cynical, suspicious side wonders if that is EXACTLY why they got the Rumba next week when Evan, who has previously done the same dance as her, is doing a tango.

It was a lot of fun and a big success and I was very happy. I felt we told the story of the two sailors off on an adventure.

We got a 23, still a strong score, but lower than last week. I was kind of expecting it, though, because we broke judge Len Goodman’s rules. But I couldn’t stay in frame because the music was saying something else. The song, “Anything Goes” was too dynamic and I thought, we have to match that with this routine — if not, we’ll be doing the song injustice.

We were sorry the show aired our rehearsal footage that showed us having a tiff. Nicole said she wasn’t very ladylike by cursing. She joked that she was still in character, though — she had the voice of a sailor! I think that happened because we have such high expectations. Being on top the past couple of weeks, we felt the pressure that this is going to be easy. But it’s not easy for Nicole or for me to come up with routines, so of course we’re going to get stressed out.

Actually, despite what aired this week, our rehearsals were mostly high-spirited. Nicole and I spent most of the time on the floor laughing.

Nicole is blogging at Us Magazine, where they keep saying Cheryl will be blogging but I have yet to see it. Am I missing it? Anyway, it always surprises me just how goofy Nicole is, for being so gorgeous. I guess she got the exact right partner. 🙂 I like goofy. It’s amazing how well casting did this season in matching people up.

We went out there, let loose and had a good time. We made a choice to take a leap of faith, and Derek choreographed it for the audience at home and for sheer entertainment…

I wanted to cry when I got the 6 from Len Goodman! When you work so hard on something, you try so hard and you care so much! So it hurts. But that’s okay because if we get the opportunity to come back next week, we are just going to abide by the “Len” Commandments and hopefully get another chance!

I’m having fun and I’m learning something new, but it’s inevitable — I put a lot of pressure on myself. That’s just my personality, that’s how I’ve gotten to where I am in life. I’m so grateful for it. I came from really humble beginnings and this is just who I am. You’re going to see me stress out when I have to learn a dance I’ve never done before in five days and you know you have to do it in front of millions of people and they’re expecting something really good. Luckily I have a bomb-diggity partner and fortunately he never takes a day off and he’s great to work with me!

DWTS Season 10, Week 2 – The Pros Blog (and a Celeb or two too)!

First up, Maks in TV Guide – who has an awful lot to say this week. The title alone says a mouthful. 🙂 Excerpts:

Dancing’s Maks: Celebs Need to Be Nice to Their Partners

Last time, I talked about Erin having trouble getting into character and exaggerating movements. This week, it’s all about acting, so I told her to build upon what we did in the foxtrot because it has to be that much bigger and that much more exaggerated. You’ll see why next week! Everybody is either going to absolutely love our waltz or not get what just happened. I’m not concerned with the judges. I know that what we are going to do is going to be technically savvy and the choreography is a very straightforward waltz. It’s Week 3 and I think what I need to have Erin do is to come out with a solid performance that doesn’t have to be “Oh my God!” The “Oh my God!” is going to be the story.

Len Goodman — Lord have mercy, you are the man! This week, he gets the lifetime achievement for what he said: Celebrities need to show up, keep up and shut up. I think it’s the most amazing thing to happen to us. People don’t realize that the pressure in its entirety is on us. The real pressure is not on the celebrities. They just have to do the dance. How fast they learn is all them, but everything else — the choreography, the costumes, the interpretation — no one has any idea how freaking hard it is to choreograph a number in four days and teach it to someone who’s never danced. Not only do you have to choreograph it, but you have to fight with them to prove that what you want them to do is going to be great. It is crazy! It is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life and I keep coming back twice a year because I’m a masochist! I just want to say to all the celebrities to be nice to your partners — obviously you’ll have frustrations and disagreements, but just be nice. Your success on the show depends on us. You just have to create a bond, create trust and figure out how to work together. Have fun!

Derek focuses more on himself and Nicole and less about other people in his OK! blog – although he does touch on Shannen’s elimination and Mark’s injury. An excerpt:

But seriously, while we were dancing on Monday night, I could tell it was going well because when Nicole performs, she makes noises. She goes,” Whoo! All right! Yeah!” She makes sounds to pump herself up and keep the dance going. As a matter of fact, we’re both very vocal. We’re both talking to each other throughout the dance. It’s nice to hear that.

However, I kept looking in her eyes and it’s unbelievable how nervous she is. Nicole plays it like she’s confident and strong but she has to get into gear like everybody else. Dancing is a scary experience for her. Also on Monday night, I felt I’ve never worked harder during a dance in my entire time on the show. It was extremely fast and I’m just glad the judges rewarded us.

Tuesday was a surprising elimination night with Shannen Doherty going home after she’d improved so much during the second week. But it seems like fate as her partner (and my close friend Mark Ballas) had a freak accident Monday during rehearsal and couldn’t have continued in the competition anyway.

I’m worried about Mark’s knee. He’s had problems with his knees for awhile but he’s a soldier and powers on through it. This time, the muscle came off the bone. But he’s a trouper — he’ll be back. Mark is taking it extra easy now to avoid having to have surgery. In season five, the same thing happened with his shoulder — he was injured, but he kept dancing on it and then it dislocated and it turned into this huge thing, so it’s best he rests his knee. As you all know, we are not only friends but we also perform in the Ballas Hough band together, so I need my buddy to be 100 percent! It’s a shame but it’s one of those things — this show is crazy, right?

Jake Pavelka (along with Chelsie), has posted a video blog on his official web site.

I did find Cheryl’s US Magazine Blog from Tuesday before the results show – any one know if this is a regular thing for her? I couldn’t tell. An excerpt:

Pro dancer Cheryl Burke is competing on her ninth season on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, performing with Cincinnati Bengals football player Chad Ochocinco. In an exclusive post-show blog, Burke tells Us her thoughts after she and Ochocinco performed a foxtrot March 29 that drew lukewarm reception from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioni and a score of 16/20. Burke is blogging for UsMagazine.com:

After last night’s foxtrot, I wanted to hear constructive criticism, not bashing from the judges! I wanted to hear something we can really work with and improve and I’m not sure we heard that. During the routine, I could tell there were a few things in the middle where it wasn’t our best dance. But we gave it our all and Chad has so much potential. I hope the fans will have us back next week!
