DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Shawn Johnson Edition

First off, a bit of an apology for my week-long hiatus from this series – between my 9-5 and the heinous betch that Who Wore it Better? turned out to be, I was pretty well spent by the time I got home each night last week…and let’s just say my creativity wasn’t exactly at its peak. But I’m back now, and going to try and finish the last 4 editions (and a few other items) before the premiere.  Procrastinators of the world, unite…tomorrow 😉

For those of you playing catch up (or who missed the previous editions), you can just use the search box and type in “previous dance experience” – all of the previous editions should show up, newest to oldest.  I’m just too lazy to link to the 9 previous installments 😛

For Shawn’s best dance, I chose her cha-cha to “P.Y.T.”:

And for her worst dance, I picked her Lindy hop:

Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of Shawn’s dancing – don’t get me wrong, I think she’s a great role model for young girls and a sweetie pie to boot.  But rewatching all of her dances, I’m not just wowed by any of them – but thankfully, I’m not hugely let down by them, either.  I guess the best way I can sum up my opinion of Shawn in season 8 is this: she was a hard worker & a good natural mover who, for the most part, seemed to let Mark drive the bus – she always struck me as very pleasantly going along with whatever theme/choreography/costume/etc. Mark threw at her, without really adding any of her own input.  Disagree if you like, but I just felt like Shawn (maybe out of youth) was just a bit of a pushover that season – and consequently, I don’t think she ever really connected deeply with a lot of her routines.  It could be the gymnast in her, too – kind of a poker face to get through each event.  So I guess my primary hope for her this season is that she gets to give a bit more input into her routines, and can connect with them on a more personal level – and perhaps get a bit more mature with her choreo 😉 That said, I do think she is a good mover – she doesn’t seem to have any issues with timing or range of motion, and is one person that does seem to know exactly how to style her arms for each dance.  However, I think she may face a bit of the same problem that Drew will: she’s just so LITTLE.  At less than 5′, even moving with her full range of motion is probably not going to look as impressive and “big” as it will on someone willowy, like Melissa.  Even in “P.Y.T.”, which I consider to be the best combination of dance skill & performance quality we saw from Shawn in season 8, her legs just can’t seem to get that same eye-catching bending & straightening action that makes cha-cha so appealing when a person with longer legs does it.  I just hope Derek has some tricks up his sleeve that can help Shawn’s lines look as LONG as possible.  As for her worst dance – I actually have to kinda blame that one on Mark.  While I don’t think she really had any heinously bad dances on her season, I do think there were a few where Mark’s quest for eye-catching, creative choreo may not have showcased Shawn in the best way.  Their Lindy was a prime example – he seemed to rely too heavily on her gymnastic skills, and off-the-wall tricks to sell that one.  Too bad the judges weren’t buying it.  I hope that Derek knows better than to do that this season, but with the level of competition as high as it is, I worry that all the pros may feel the need to “up their game” to stick around – and it may not always pay off.

Court’s verdict: If Shawn can mature a bit in her dancing and work on injecting some more of her personality into it (and Derek knows how to showcase her well), then she could be a contender.

So what are your thoughts on Shawn?

DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Gilles Marini Edition

You guys know the drill by now – check out the Melissa Rycroft edition and you can backtrack back to all the rest of the previous editions 😉 Today we finish up with this season’s guys by taking a look at Gilles…

I picked Gilles’ Argentine tango as his best dance:

And as his worst dance, I picked his jive:

No doubt, Gilles has got the full package (no pun intended…): he’s got the stage presence, he’s got great technique, and he’s got an amazing personality to boot.  I still think his Argentine tango is one of the most impressive we’ve ever seen on the show – and that’s a big credit, considering season 8 was the first season that Argentine tango was performed on the show (and consequently, some of the pros were left a bit clueless as to what to do), and Gilles & Cheryl’s routine wasn’t particularly flashy or chock full of lifts, like so many we’ve seen in recent seasons.  What made it great was it was a good, simple, well-executed routine in which they really focused on the character of the dance, rather than going for every flashy, impressive step they could find.  I think almost all of Gilles’ routines are the perfect example of how you don’t need a bunch of flash & trash to get good scores – if you’re focused enough on the dance itself that you can make every step speak volumes.  Gilles is a technician – and he’s a HUNGRY technician, who is highly motivated to do well this season.  While I think every contestant is going to need some degree of “hunger” to do well this season, I fear that Gilles’ hunger could end up hurting him in the end – such is the case with his jive.  I think it’s apparent from the rehearsal footage that Gilles was just not having an easy time with the jive, and it was really getting to him.  I don’t think it helped much that Cheryl seemed to throw everything but the kitchen sink into this routine, and wasn’t exactly a nuturing partner when Gilles was really struggling – but what became apparent in the dance itself was that Gilles was just pushing himself too hard, and I really think it ended up causing him to falter.  The guy that was always in rhythm and in the pocket was suddenly off-time missing steps, and worst of all? He didn’t look like he was enjoying himself anymore.  The dance just became a Herculean task to complete.  And I think that’s one possible hurdle Peta’s going to have to contend with this season – Gilles’ tendency to push himself so hard that he stops enjoying himself.  Gilles seems more determined than ever to win this time around – and it’s bordering on Brandy Syndrome (being so desperate to win that it actually becomes off-putting). Being so intensely focused on the end goal can often result in couples losing sight of what’s important – having fun.  A couple can dance a routine flawlessly, but if they look like they’re getting a root canal while they’re doing it? Fuggeddaboudit.

In some ways, I think Gilles getting Peta instead of Cheryl may actually be beneficial – I know I’ve expressed some skepticism about the whole Gilles/Peta partnership, but after watching Cheryl’s demeanor in she in Gilles’ rehearsal videos (and watching footage of Peta with Donald last season), I think Peta may actually be more effective in keeping Gilles’ feet on the ground and reminding him to enjoy himself.  I almost think a repeat Gilles/Cheryl partnership would be so determined to win that the end result would be kind of scary-focused on the dance floor – and they’d lose a lot of the appeal they had the first time around.  I just hope Peta doesn’t get excited puppy syndrome because she’s got such a skilled partner, and proverbially pee all over the dance floor by trying to cram as many impressive & difficult steps into their routines as possible.  Not everyone can handle a Nicole Scherzinger-level of choreographic difficulty.  🙂

Court’s verdict: Unlike many of the other contestants this season, I think Gilles’ biggest struggle is just going to be letting loose and not taking himself too seriously.  It’s going to be up to Peta to keep him on the right track and enjoying myself, while forging a good chemistry and not trying too hard to choreograph a bunch of crazy stuff to get the judges’ and viewers’ attention.  QUALITY, not quantity.

Now let’s hear your thoughts on Gilles.   Do you think he can finally nab the MBT with Peta…or will he flame out in the process?

DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Melissa Rycroft Edition

Let’s continue on with my analysis of this season’s contestants – today we move onto Melissa.  Finally getting more into the ladies of this season! To check out any of my previous posts in the series, check out the Sabrina Bryan edition…there are links to the previous editions.  🙂

For Melissa’s best dance, I picked her samba – which I believe she performed about 3 times in a 2 week period:

For her worst dance, I picked her jive – which she never actually performed live, due to injury:

I think Melissa’s biggest asset could also be her biggest obstacle to overcome: her cheerleading background.  It does give her a bit of an edge in terms of picking up choreography, having rhythm, and just having good movement quality – but I think it also tends to make her look a bit wishy-washy in terms of ballroom technique, judging from these videos.  If my big complaint about Sabrina is that she hits everything too hard, my big complaint about Melissa is that she tends to hit everything a bit too softly and fluidly – perhaps even a bit generically.  It’s the same problem I see with some of my friends who have gone on to dance for NBA & NFL teams: their movement takes on almost a robotic, inoffensive quality, which I guess does come in handy when dancing in sync with 30 other girls and no one is supposed to stand out.  But blending into with everyone this season is definitely NOT something Melissa should be aiming for – so I think she’s going to need to sharpen up her steps and avoid any of the cheerleading “pitfalls”…are you listening too, Tony? Because I think the choreography is part of the problem, too.  I can understand falling back on her high-kicking & piroutting skills the first week – poor thing only had a week to learn the waltz.  But beyond that, I think Tony really should have avoided a ton of “cheerleader tricks” and really made Melissa focus on ballroom technique – and unfortunatley, I think the majority of their routines were less meat-and-potatoes ballroom and more “ok, you’re going to high-kick here, do a series of pirouttes there, and then do a split – and we’ll just shove some easy ballroom steps in between!”.  I’m not saying he should totally abandon her obvious dance skills – I’m just saying he should probably figure out a better way to make them more “ballroom-y”.  Some of the fundamental principles are the same – spotting turns, using your core to really elongate your limbs, etc. – and can be easily incorporated into a ballroom vocabulary.  If she can do an underarm turn using the same principles she would use to do a piroutte – Melissa could have the best damn technique of any of the dancers on the show.  But Tony MUST teach her how to apply it.  Melissa IS a good jazz dancer – now she has got to become a good ballroom dancer.

Melissa’s injury also brings up an interesting point: how are injuries going to come into play this season? With the level of competition so high and all of the couples working harder than ever before to up their game, there’s bound to be injuries – the question is, who will be smart enough to avoid them, who will be able to work through them, and who will be sidelined by them? I’m inclined to think that those who got injured on their original season (Melissa, Gilles, & Pam all come to mind) may be at a greater risk to incur the same injuries – will they be able to work through them this time? Gilles’ performance in particular seemed to really suffer due to his shoulder injury.  I think it will be interesting to see who is able to soldier through the pressure of this season, and whose injuries really affect their performance negatively.

Court’s verdict: Melissa’s a good dancer – but she needs to shake off the “cheerleader-yness” and focus on ballroom technique.  Ditto for Tony – cut back on the high kicks & pirouttes and really drill that Latin technique into her.

So what do you guys think? Is Melissa a contender…or is she still stuck in cheerleader mode?

DWTS “Who Wore it Better?” – The Pre-Season 15 All-Star Edition, Part I!

This season, we opted to do things a bit differently – as we have with just about every other regular feature we do each season, since the format is a bit wacky, to say the least 😛 First, we’ve divided WWIB into two parts – mainly to accomodate the fact that Kirstie & Maks’ and the 13th couple’s (who we now know to be Sabrina & Louis) promo photos have yet to be released, but also to buy us some time for the labor-intensive task of finding good pictures for some of these 🙂 Secondly, we’ve included the couples’ promo photos from their original seasons for comparison as well.  But as always, we’ve offered up our usual snark commentary on each of the costumes, for your enjoyment 😎

Battle of the turquoise & black lace corset dress/Kelly & Alec vs. Kelly & Val:  Kelly & Alec’s season 1 promo pic vs. Kelly & Val’s season 15 promo pic vs. Edyta in the season 9 pro tango demo

Courtney: The Iceman cometh! Wow, even Alec’s promo pic screams “I have no emotions” to me.  And while Kelly is a bit better, I still wish she’d actually smile in her promo pics – the whole “smoldery non-smile” she does just seems like she’s trying too hard to me.  And I’m probably the only one that feels this way, judging from some of everyone’s initial comments on the promo photos, but I’m not really all that wild about Kelly & Val’s pic…you’ll see I’m not much of a fan of the couples that went the “smoldery” route with their promo pix.  As for the costume itself – gotta go with Edyta on this one.  Granted, it’s hard to hold a candle to Edyta in pretty much ANY costume, but I think I like it better with a lace skirt, as opposed to a fringed one.  And while I was cursing under my breath while putting this edition together about how BAD some of the costumes have gotten since Randall left, I thank my lucky stars we’re not still stuck with Designs to Shine, who costumed the first season. Can we say “tacky”? 😯

Heidi: Val sez, “You…are sooo sexy.” To which Kelly sez, “You are sexy, but I am sleeping with my cousin’s best friend’s husband’s brother and am simply toying with you as a cover to hide our true looove….” That is my long winded way of saying, Kelly is a soap actress…they only do smolder.  Sometimes well, sometimes not – and Val is a huge step up from Alec in terms of emotion and Kelly has evolved to smoldering with her mouth *closed*. 🙂 The dress you ask? I go with Edyta sans fishnets.  Although I think it’s cuter in the shorter length.

The verdict: Just say no to soap opera smolder.  Read more..

Pure DWTS -Holiday Media To Begin Your Week

Holiday Greetings Everyone!! Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet?? I’m almost finished. Just a few more things and I should be sitting good. Now all we need here is some snow! lol

Speaking of Christmas shopping, I ran into a fun eBay store which had DWTS Magnets, Calendars, Mousepads, and more. There might be some cool gifts or stocking stuffers that your DWTS friends and family might love. Heidi could use a “Derek Mousepad” I am sure. 🙂 Here’s the store: Port Charles Place.

In some DWTS news out there, Hollyscoop.com caught up with Carrie Ann at ‘The Trevor Project’, which deals with suicide prevention for Gay young people. Carrie Ann talks about her thoughts on this project, the past season on ‘Dancing With The Stars’, her holiday plans and more.

Jennifer Grey is recovering at home from her Surgery. Here is a take from People.com.

Dr. Robert S. Bray Jr. removed “a huge fragment” from Grey’s back during the operation. The procedure was a success, and Grey, 50, is recuperating but feeling great.

“I’m still recovering at home. I have to rest a bit more, but I feel great – completely pain free,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Bray, who performed the operation at the D.I.S.C. Sports and Spine Center in Marina del Rey, Calif., says Grey “can go back to her family, pilates, dancing – just about anything she wants to do.”

Maks lit up Twitter yesterday with a picture for where he’s at in the Ukraine currently. Gorgeous! What a beautiful place to spend Christmas and “very Dr. Zhivago” as one twitter follower said.

He also tweeted this.

Just a quick message (in light of the current news) to all the fans! I’m great! Having an amazing time and finding out a lot about myself in the process… Don’t read into things and I promise I’ll let you know what it is that I’m doing in due time. LOVE all the support I’m getting from you all and can’t wait to get back to NY and family/friends to celebrate 2011! And PLEASE don’t worry about all the haters……I sure don’t 🙂

Speaking of Maks, he along with Mark and Derek have made Glee So Rocks “TV’s 100 Sexiest Men of 2010” List. Mark came in at #58. Maks came in at #24. Derek came in at #26. Sssss, it’s a pretty cool list. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of these men on Dancing With The Stars next Season. How about you? 🙂

For those of you missing Jonathan and Edyta like myself, here they are dancing The Grand Pacific Ball Catalina Optivest.

It looks like Karina had fun celebrating her engaement in Las Vegas this past week with The Chippendales. Here a picture of her. More pics in a cool gallery at Wizbangpop.

Courtney will love this. Anna and Tony attended a charity event in South Florida last week which benefitted The Ronald MacDonald House Charity, The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Foundation, and Disabled American Veterans. Here is a picture and a take from Accidental Sexiness. Be sure to see the link for more and some video footage as well…especially of Tony saying he’d love to dance with Lindsay Lohan if given the opportunity.

On Thursday, December 9th, 2010 the venue hosted an evening with Dancing with the Stars pro’s Tony Dovolani and Anna Trebunskaya who were even more amazing in person than they are on television. ( I had no idea that was even possible!)

Tony is as dreamy and sexy as you could imagine and Anna’s fiery red hair is quite representative of her electric personality. Poor thing had her suitcase go missing in Los Angeles but she still managed to look fantastic for the event.

The couple performed two dances for guests of the casino, even those who were not participating in the meet and greet. Crowds formed to catch a glimpse of the dancing duo who sadly will never be paired off on the show. Yes, they were THAT good together!

Lastly, would you like to learn to dance with some of the DWTS Pros in the off season? If so, see how you can do so at Suite 101. I’ll take a lesson with Tony and Maks please. 🙂

Ok, this wraps up this media edition for now. Have a great upcoming week!!! xxxx

Pure DWTS – What Some Of The The Pros & One Judge Are Up To And More!

Just a few dance things to share with you today!!

First of all, Carrie Ann was interviewed by Popstop TV this week. In the interview she talks about Lindsay Lohan, Todd Palin, her Christmas plans, and more. Here is a take. Be sure to see the link for more as well as a video that I couldn’t embed here.

“I’ve been asking for Lindsay Lohan since she went to jail the first time,” Carrie Ann Inaba dished exclusively to me.

“Honestly, I definitely think it’d be a great experience for her because she’s very talent. I think it would be a great come back for her.”

Lohan on Dancing With the Stars would definitely benefit not only Lohan but also the network! Who wouldn’t tune in to see Lohan’s foxtrots? But what about Todd Palin, who’s rumored to be in the works of being on the show right after his daughter Bristol?

“Nope,” Carrie Ann said. “I wouldn’t be interested in seeing his moves.”

Carrie Ann is also a big advocate for same-sex couples on the show. “I love breaking down boundaries just in general in my whole life. I think it’s important to break down stereotypes and break down boundaries so I would love to see a same-sex couple on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ but we’d have to figure out some judging changes.”

Any chances of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi putting on their dance shoes in the near future?

“I would love that! I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get that but I think it would be great.”

Heidi’s Note: I believe that today was the semi-final of Strictly Come Dancing, so we know where Bruno and Len are right now. 🙂

In other news out there, Tony Dovolani has officially been picked to be a Judge for the 90th Miss America Contest to be held on Jan. 15th. From Google News.

“The View” co-host Joy Behar and actress Marilu Henner are among seven judges who will decide the next Miss America in January.

Judges for the beauty pageant in its 90th year also include country singer Mark Wills, “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry and Miss America 1990 Debbye Turner Bell.

“Dancing With the Stars” choreographer Tony Dovolani and shoe designer Taryn Rose are also on the panel.

The selections include plenty of ties to ABC, the network airing the pageant live Jan. 15 at the start of a three-year deal. The pageant hasn’t aired on network television since 2004, when ABC dropped it after record-low ratings.

Here is a new fun interview with Cheryl on her appearance in “Forever Tango“, the current broadway show that is coming to San Francisco from Dec. 21 – Jan. 9 (I am so dying to see this). She talks of why this show means so much to her (the roots of it go way back to when she was a little girl) and how she trained for it last summer in Argentina.

Speaking of shows, Mark Ballas says the show he’s doing, “Burn The Floor” is “bad ass”. Here is a take from The Houston Press.

“People should come to see Burn the Floor because it is bad ass from start to finish. High energy, in your face, awesome dancers, awesome choreography, and it’s a spectacle of our sport. People will love it. This is like Dancing With The Stars on steroids,” Ballas told Art Attack.

After learning eight routines in two days, Ballas opens tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina, then moves to Houston before taking a Christmas break and then rejoining the tour in Pittsburgh in late December and early January.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to keep dancing and be doing a show over the Christmas holiday. The choreographer [and director Jason Gilkison] is a good friend of mine and I have a lot of friends in the show so I thought it would be great to join. ”

Ballas said DWTS is very different from Burn the Floor because on the first, you’re dancing with an amateur. “You have to train them, mentor them and go out and perform with them. That’s in contrast to BTF,” a professional show with professional standards. “It was good to be able to really dance again and get into it and dance how I trained to dance,” he said.

Which isn’t to say he doesn’t enjoy DWTS. “It’s one of my favorite seasons I’ve ever done.” He said he enjoyed working with Bristol Palin “just because she was so sweet, so easy to deal with, so wonderful, so eager to learn, open-minded, kind, loving, caring and just fun to spend time with, and to see her journey from the beginning to where she ended up was just remarkable and as a coach just very satisfying.”

I wouldn’t mind seeing this show too. Also, if you’d like to see some pics of Mark’s new home, he tweeted that you can see some pictures of it in the new edition of Ok Magazine.

Anyone missing and wondering where Maks is like I have been this last week? Well, here he is arriving at the airport, filming, and being interviewed on the Ukrainian version of The Bachelor which he is currently starring in. Can anyone understand what he’s saying? Be sure to see the link for more on this project.

Kym has given Stylelist some of her backstage beauty secrets. Here is take.

“We’ve used hair extensions and pieces since the beginning on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ And now, everyone at home can achieve those looks. It literally takes five minutes to do. Believe me, your husbands and boyfriends will thank you for it because you’ll spend far less time getting ready.”

When asked how she personally likes to use the extensions, Johnson replied, “To achieve highlights or lowlights without changing my natural color, I use extensions a shade lighter or darker, depending on my mood. I just clip in the strips! It’s that easy and there’s no risk of damage like with glued-in extensions. My favorite piece is the Salsaloosa — it’s like a messy updo, you put your own ponytail in and you just wrap the Salsaloosa around twice like a scrunchy. I prefer the “buttered toast” shade. For the strips I use a shade lighter, like highlights, but you really can’t go wrong.”

And for the show?“Often we go for a 1940s-inspired look and those are complex and glamorous. I like to do a bun, too. I’ve got such fine hair and these just minimize the damage and don’t have that funny synthetic shine to them that lots of inexpensive hair pieces do. I was wearing the extenions when my friend Jai Rodriguez from “Queer Eye” came with me to “Skating With The Stars” and he couldn’t tell I had the extensions on, so I know they’re good, because he would totally have said something.”

What’s a typical day like during the season?“We start at 8 a.m. and half the day is spent in hair and makeup, but it’s fun and social. I go to the makeup area and use gel [under eye] patches from Shiseido and keep them on while my hair gets done — they tighten the skin under my eyes and feel great and cooling and wake me up. Also, you cannot underestimate great lashes. My eyelash curler is my best friend and I use Maybelline Great LashMascara or Christian Dior DiorShow. These are absolutely a part of my daily routine.”

How do you stay motivated?“Each season of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ is grueling. We train about seven hours day every single day once the show starts. We get no days off at all. But it’s so much fun and I’m lucky to be able to do what I love for my job.”

Jennifer Grey’s surgery was a success this past week. She posted on it at Twitter a few days ago.

Lastly, it looks like her partner Derek has finallly found a spot for all three of his “Mirror Ball” trophies. He just posted this picture at his twitter today.

He also posted his new refridgerator and a picture of his new couch being lifted into his Condo. As Heidi said to me, he sure is in the nesting spirit lately. We wonder why? 🙂

Ok, that wraps up this weekend media edition for now. More soon!! I hope you are all being good or else. Have a fun weekend!! 😉 xxx

DWTS Season 12 – Rumors, Hopes, and I Wish

As we enter the rumor season of the year, I want to remind everyone of the real breakdown of what we see on the net. Not everything is actually a rumor. And interestingly enough, today we have examples of all three possible situations when it comes to the potential cast of next season’s DWTS. 🙂

Category 1 – The Actual Rumor

Today, as EVERYONE has heard by now, the rumor is Lindsay Lohan. Prior to today, it fell more in the category of heresay, but now we have Radar Online saying it’s nearly a done deal. Just a website? Maybe, but like me (pats self on back) they have actually gotten it right at times. It’s officially a rumor:

This could be the ultimate comeback.

Lindsay Lohan is secretly in talks to be a contestant on the hit show Dancing With the Stars, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.
After what seemed like endless legal woes that landed her in jail and now rehab, Lindsay is negotiating for the chance to change her image by appearing one ABC’s mega hit.

“Lindsay has been talking with the DWTS people,” a source close to the actress exclusively told RadarOnline.com. “She is definitely interested and considering being on the show.”

Of course, Gossip Cop says it ain’t so and quotes her Rep:

Gossip Cop looked into the matter again to see whether anything had cha-cha-changed.

We can bust the rumor once and for all.

“Lindsay Lohan is not doing Dancing with the Stars,” her rep exclusively tells Gossip Cop. “The story is false.”

Category 2 – Hope (aka “Please Put me on DWTS”)

Many, MANY people label this as “rumor”, perhaps in an attempt to get traffic to their site? But someone telling everyone who will listen that they want to be on the show does not qualify as a rumor someone is going to be on the show in except very rare cases (Kate Gosselin being one, who I reported as wanting it and eventually ended up thinking she was going to get it, thanks to Jay Leno. 🙂 ). Today, in the Category of “Hope,” we have Ne Ne Leakes talking to People.com:

Will NeNe Leakes be the first of Bravo’s Real Housewives to be tapped for ABC’s Dancing with the Stars?

The Atlanta Housewife, who’s been getting a taste of reality competition while filming The Celebrity Apprentice, which is expected to air in March, says she’d be thrilled to get the call from the Dancing producers.

“Absolutely. They need a black girl like me. They really do,” Leakes, 42, said on TBS’s Lopez Tonight. “They need a black girl like me to keep it real on the show.”

Category 3 – I WISH

This doesn’t fall in either of the previous two categories. It’s not being rumored extensively to the point that you think where there’s smoke there might be fire, but it’s also not a celeb expressing their desires. It’s someone on twitter or elsewhere asking their favorite celeb if they’re going to be on DWTS, but doing it in a way that it makes me do a bit of research to see if there is any possibility or if someone is just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks. 🙂 I call it “I wish” because this is usually what it’s all about. Someone is wishing upon a star. Today, our “wish” candidate is one that I wish were true or it even had a remote possibility of being true – Kristen Chenowith. This came up as a random tweet TO Kristen last night (which is why I’m actually posting it) – of course I can’t find the tweet again, but last night I checked and she never responded to it. It could be because she’s currently starring in “Promises Promises” on Broadway. I also think she’s too big for DWTS, in addition to being a little busy.  Oh! Found the Tweet.

Oh crap, just checked the Official Site for Promises Promises and it’s closing in January. I’m getting my hopes up. I hate when that happens. 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Miscellaneous Media – DWTS Season 8 AND 9

I threw that Season 8 in there because I found Gilles on E! News in a “European” swimsuit. Ahem. Yep, never voted for Gilles when he was on the show, but he is one hot hunk of man and he seems like a real sweetheart. 🙂

Donny and Kym on ET – Donny finds out that MJ’s kids are rooting for him. (Um, so what? They’re just KIDS! Geez. They’re kids I feel sorry for because of all the hype.)

Ballroom Edition: THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE INCREDIBLY HOT!

Today’s edition is dedicated to the Viennese Waltz and the Foxtrot. I am not a ballroom girl, I much prefer the Latin dances; however, these are week one dances and I want everyone to be prepared to know what to look for 🙂

THE GOOD
Season 4: Laila Ali; Viennese Waltz
Laila was never my favorite dancer but she was a joy to watch because she always wanted to do her best! Maks really pushed her and that’s how she got to level that she got to 🙂 Laila has beautiful lines in this elegant dance and amazing foot work throughout! This is one of Mak’s best choreo pieces!

Season 7: Brooke Burke; Viennese Waltz
I can’t say enough good things about Brooke!  She was by far the most talented of the season 7 cast and Derek really took advantage of that with all of his choreo.  I loved that Derek showcased her beautiful lines as much as he could!  She really does look like a pro 🙂

Season 4: Joey Fatone; Foxtrot
Joey was a great surprise on the dance floor!  We know he has ‘boy-band’ dancing skills but never would I have imagined his ballroom/latin skills!  I was very impressed with his foot technique.  I find that the guys have more difficulty grasping the technique concepts but he always was light on his feet and very precise!  Kym gave him a great choreo piece here!

Season 7: Brooke Burke; Foxtrot
Just like her Viennese Waltz, Brooke is beautiful in the Foxtrot!  You really can’t get better than Brooke’s technique with Derek’s Choreo!

 THE BAD
Season 5: Josie Maran; Viennese Waltz
The thing with Josie is that she was on her heels the whole time!  This makes a dancer look very, very heavy in their foot work!  Another think Josie did was stop her lines at her elbow which takes away from the elegance that the dance is suppose to give off!  She looked beautiful but she didn’t dance beautifully.

Season 6: Adam Corolla; Foxtrot
I feel like Adam tried to do his best while on the show but I also feel like he thought it was a joke.  I felt like he was always more concerned with being funny than becoming a decent dancer!  His biggest down fall in this dance is walking the steps rather than dancing the steps.

THE INCREDIBLY HOT
Season 4: Foxtrot
Not my favorite pro dance to watch because of the style but it’s still very nicely done.

Look for the Salsa Edition tomorrow!  What dances are you predicting I show 🙂

Cha, Cha, Cha Edition: THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE INCREDIBLY HOT!

5 days until the premier of season 9!!!! According to twitter, our pros and celebs are brushing up on their first dances so I am taking the first four dance styles (Cha, Cha, Salsa, Viennese Waltz, and Foxtrot) and finding the best, the worst, and the incredible hot from all previous seasons! After these next four editions, we should know exactly what to look for when it comes show time!

THE GOOD

Season 3: Emmitt Smith
Emmit displays a lot of qualities that make a cha, cha, cha so hot! First of all, you can tell that he is having a blast by his expressions through out the dance. He always keeps up with Cheryl and is able to dance her choreo precisely and with only one noticeable slip up which was when he slide under her.

Season 4: Laila Ali
It is so nice to see the girly side of Laila! She looks like she is have such a ball with Maks! I am always impressed when a celeb can pick up footwork/technique! It’s got to be one of the hardest aspects of the show since it is so specific! However, Laila’s hands kill me!!!! Not her extension stops mid forearm and never extends through her hands or fingers! Overall, she was fabulous!

Helio Castroneves: Season 5
Helio always cracked me up! I loved that he got so excited about his performances 🙂 I will say that this cha, cha, cha wasn’t the most exciting dance but it did earn them a 30 so I feel like I should pay tribute to them along with the other 30s 🙂

Season 6: Kristi Yamaguchi
Kristi was amazing to watch all season! I wish she would have come out of her shell just a little bit more and let America see her personality! I kind of felt like she was business all the time! However, Mark was a great teacher for her and the two of them had amazing chemistry together 🙂 This cha, cha, cha was precise, articulate, and a lot of fun all around!

Season 8: Shawn Johnson
Shawn is so adorable! I can’t say enough about this little lady! You could tell that she had so a blast with Mark and this dance! Mark choreographed it so suit her so well and she performed it flawlessly!

THE BAD
Season 3: Tucker Charlson
A pretty good hint that a dance is going to be a train wreck is if the celeb is sitting in a chair for a good amount of time during the opening of the dance! I think Tucker looked like he was having fun but I feel like you could tell her was uncomfortable with the steps. He was very heavy on his feet and didn’t display the technique that the Cha Cha Cha requires.

THE INCREDIBLY HOT

Season 5: Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan is a classic and this song is great for a cha, cha, cha! And how can you not love Julianne, Kim, Mark, and Maks 🙂
