Last night on the QVC channel, Karina joined other celebrities for QVC’s “FFANY Shoes on Sale” to help sell shoes for Breast Cancer research and education. Radar Online reports that for the past 17 years, QVC special benefit has sold over 1.5 million pairs of shoes and has donated more than $35 million to the cause. This year, more than 90,000 pairs of shoes from over 80 brands will be sold.
Good job Karina! I hope you were able to sell a lot of shoes!!!
Ryan Seacrest interviewed J.R. and Karina on his radio show yesterday!! The two talk of how much fun they are having. Ryan was backstage at the show last week. He mentions all the support J.R. has from the cast. Karina hasn’t won a mirror ball trophy yet, but she doesn’t want to get caught up in the competition aspect of it all, because you miss out on all the fun memories. She tells Ryan, “We literally take one dance at a time, one day at a time. If there is a mirror ball trophy at the end of it, then it is going to be that much better and that much sweeter. If not, then it is all good because we are having a blast, but yes, I am planning to maybe break Derek’s [Hough] leg or something just in case!” More below on J.R.’s feelings and his story on Iraq and why he decided to dance in hoping to educate people on “true beauty”.
Below are Karina and J.R. being interview by E Online as well on his platform for dancing on the show, how they hope to keep growing, their special bond, and more….
So inspirational with a big heart as always!! Stay tuned for more because these two will be guests on The Ellen Show on Monday!
J.R. looked very cool in black last night as Jay Leno’s guest on The Tonight Show. He talked of why he first joined the Army in 2002 and what happened there after with the explosion. When J.R. first came out of the coma to see what happened to his face and body, he didn’t know how he’d go on. “Humor” was key in pulling him through and still is (as you can see in the interview). Jay asks J.R. on Dancing With The Stars as well. He’s having the time of his life and his Mom is too watching him. Much more below. Great interview!
Disney has released two new video promos of Karina and JR. They answer some tweets from the fans on choreography as well as give us teasers for their new dance Monday. Get ready for a silly and funny J.R. like they hinted at in their interviews after the Results show!! Karina says he’ll be wearing a “unitard” too and J.R. doesn’t look too pleased about it. LOL
Then in this new interview with ET, JR talks of his horrible accident in Iraq. One minute he was laughing and in the next minute he was feeling the pressure of being burned. He also talks of his emotional dance this past Monday and everything that ran through his mind at the time. Inspirational as always…
J.R. Martinez told the Huffington Post that he is representing all of the veterans on Dancing With The Stars. He said, “The thing is, a lot of our vets come home and they feel displaced, and they don’t feel like their voice matters, so for me to be a spokesman and have that honor to educate America about who we are and what we are, it’s like I’m doing my job. I’ll never have the opportunity to go back to Iraq and serve my country, but I tell people this is my way of serving. I don’t have a weapon in my hand, and I don’t have a uniform on my body, but my uniform now is my scars and weapon is my words, so I’m still serving.” They explain how he got hurt in Iraq to how he ended up getting an acting gig on All My Children. Here is more for what he says on the show below, but, be sure to visit the link. It’s a great, inspirational read with a video interview included!!
“In this life, all you need is for someone to believe in you,” said Martinez. “You can go a long way if someone believes in you. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have so many people believe in me, and I want to help people believe in themselves. There are people that didn’t know who I was before, and that’s okay because it’s not like I’m Brad Pitt, but because of ‘Dancing,’ they know now, and I get to reach millions.”
And if you think there’s any competition between the “Dancing” stars off the dance floor, think again.
“There’s no backstabbing and no drama,” said Martinez. “It’s just fun to watch people step out of their comfort zones and do things that they’ve never done before and witness them grow so much throughout the entire process.”
When asked if he’d expected to be on top of the leaderboard in weeks one and two, the actor responded modestly.
“No,” said Martinez, “But then again, I didn’t have any expectations in regards to score and the leaderboard. Honestly, all I kept thinking about was my footwork and my extensions and just enjoying the moment and focussing on Karina [Smirnoff]. That big turn we did, we almost took out. In rehearsals we would try it and I would mess up and drop her. I was like, ‘Oh my god, you’re going to be broken by the time week one starts.’ But then ultimately, we decided to keep it, and it came out just beautiful.”
This weekend Steven Tyler, Jeff Beck, Sting, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, David Guetta, Usher, Kenny Chesney, Lady Gaga, Sting and other big name musical artists gathered in Las Vegas to perform for iHeartRadio, the new mobile phone app launched by Clear Channel. Representing Dancing With The Stars were J.R., Karina Smirnoff, Rob Kardashian, and Cheryl Burke. Karina and J.R. stopped to pose in the press room at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Rob Kardashian hosted a iHeartRadio Music Festival Wet Republic Pool Party and Cheryl was there to join him. Photos below from Access Hollywood.
You can read more on the event in detail at the LA Times.
Access Hollywood goes into J.R. and Karina’s rehearsals to talk to them about their upcoming Jive and how the kick is a challenge. J.R. also talks of his tattoo and what is significant about the date and time. Apparently, a cheap watch at the time of his injury in Iraq saved him from getting burned in that spot. Fascinating and inspirational as always!
Even though J.R. was exhausted from several weeks of rehearsals and dancing on Dancing With The Stars, he travelled to Tennessee to talk about how he broke through a “dark place” after the severe burns he suffered from in Iraq. He explains in detail below for how it happened and how he found his life’s purpose afterwards. So touching. Listen below…
Isn’t that a great picture? It’s from a new little article in People where Karina talks of her favorite body part on J.R. >>>HIS FEET!! J.R. talks of all the things he’s learning from Karina too. Here is more…
“J.R. has girly feet and they are beautiful,” Karina gushed during Thursday’s waltz rehearsal. “Good toes, good pedicure. Much nicer than my feet!”
Martinez, 28, who was severely injured in the war burns over much of his body, says he’s overjoyed to be taking orders from the ballroom pro.
“I’ve learned so much, Karina is an amazing talent,” he says. “She has shown me that it’s all posture, and framing and being elegant. It’s all about fingers and toes. Being a guy, I tend to move all over the place.”
Then on Stripes.com, J.R. comments that dancing isn’t as tough as basic training, but “it has its moments”. He talks of what happened in Iraq, the military support, and what he hopes to accomplish on Dancing With The Stars including having tributes to military families.
Martinez said he jumped at the chance to compete on the dancing show to push his motivational message out even further. He’s hopeful that civilians will see him and be reminded of the troops still serving overseas, and that military viewers will be inspired to push themselves into new challenges.
“This is outside of my comfort zone,” he said. “It’s a personal challenge for myself. I’ve got a little rhythm in me, and Karina [Smirnoff, his dancing partner] is trying to get that out. That’s the biggest challenge right now.”
The pair are also planning “dances to pay tribute to the military and their families,” although he wouldn’t go into further specifics. Martinez did say that he’s already suffered his first dancing injury — a jammed toe while practicing the jitterbug — but said that hurt his pride more than anything else.
“I’m huffing and puffing a bit, but I’m taking control,” he said. “It’s fun, and I’m confident. I think we can win this.”
Much more HERE. Like so many of you, I can’t wait to see these two light us and the Country up…and in more ways than one!
J.R. Martinez says he’s not nervous to dance yet, but, he will be come Sept. 19th on the premiere of Dancing With The Stars. He’s not intimidated, it just adds to “the coolness” factor. He also explains how he got on the show and how he’s getting ready for it. His first dance will be the Viennese waltz. Here is a take below, but, be sure to visit the Dalton Daily Citizen (his hometown newspaper in Georgia) for more. He talks of the last All My Children episodes as well.
“I don’t have any formal (dance) training. When I was a teenager, my mother would always try to dance with me and teach me to dance. But I didn’t want to until I figured out that girls like guys who can dance. Then it wasn’t an issue,” he said.
To get ready for the show, he began practicing with his partner, Karina Smirnoff, five days before the cast was officially announced. Now, they and the other dance teams are practicing up to five hours a day six days a week to get ready for the premiere.
“One thing that benefits me is that I work out and stay physically active. I felt like I was in great shape, and I am. But when I wake up, I’m not sore, but it’s like I got a good workout,” he said. “It feels good now. But talk to me as we get further into the competition, when it will get even tougher.”
Martinez’s debut dance will be the Viennese waltz.
“It’s a very beautiful dance, very elegant, very graceful. Sometimes I’m not so graceful, and that’s one of the things I’m having to teach my body — to get the hand movements exactly right or to make sure my arms are in the precise place they need to be,” he said. “It’s a tough dance, but it’s a beautiful dance, and I’m glad it’s my first dance.”
Martinez says he feels confident that he’ll be ready come show time.
“I can look at it and honestly say ‘That’s not bad,’” he said. “We have the routine down. We have the steps down. Now, it’s just a question of fine-tuning everything and making sure it’s where it needs to be.”
Martinez gives much of the credit to Smirnoff, who has won numerous ballroom dancing titles and has appeared on eight previous seasons of “Dancing with the Stars.”
“Karina has been great at putting up the whole routine. She is so talented. And she has a great personality that meshes really well with mine,” he said. “She’s a great teacher. We are having fun, but she’s breaking it down for me in ways that lets me understand what I really need to be getting my body to do.”
While the practices have been intense, Martinez says he has gotten a chance to spend time with the other celebrity contestants on the show.
“We all practice in the same facility, so we all hang out together. It really depends on when they take breaks. The person I’ve been seeing most is probably Chaz Bono. We seem to be on the same schedule,” he said. “Another one is Rob Kardashian. It’s really cool. Everyone is nice and easy to get along with. Our competitive nature is saying ‘You’re going down. You’re all going down.’ But at the end of the day, it’s all fun.”
Picture above from Karina’s twitter. Wow, I am loving those “lines”!! Beautiful hold!!
ADDING: And below is a rehearsal video from ET!! Wow, he looks fantastic dancing this early in the game in my opinion! He also talks of how he was burned. My heart goes out to him.
