PureDWTS POLL: Best Male & Female Celeb Dancers in DWTS History?

So I was eating my lunch outside today (since it was the first day in quite some time that wasn’t rainy) with some coworkers, when the topic of my favorite DWTS contestant of all-time, Alfonso Ribeiro, came up.  We had been talking about the celebrity golf tournament he was in this past weekend (Vogue reported on it here, if you haven’t seen it yet), and the fact that he did the Carlton, and I think I said “He’s probably the best male dancer they’ve ever had on the show!” To which another coworker replied “Nah, Corbin Bleu was the best dancer they’ve ever had on the show!” And of course, a debate commenced over who was the better technician, who was the better entertainer, who was more athletic, etc. etc. etc.  We ended up agreeing to disagree, but it got me thinking: really & truly, out of the 20 seasons we’ve had – who is the best guy we’ve seen, and who’s the best girl?

I did a bit of a snap poll on Twitter, but I figured “Why not make it a bit more official?” and do an actual poll here? So below, I picked the most likely candidates for who would likely qualify for “best dancer” on DWTS – most would probably fall under the “ringer” category, but that’s kind of expected when we’re voting on dance skills alone.  Keep in mind that it’s not about popularity, or how well-known they were when they did the show – just dance skills & presentation, period; and independent of any previous training they might have had – so no “Well so-and-so was better because they had no previous experience and were great and that’s what DWTS is all about!!!” Strictly voting on dance skills/showmanship alone, kids.

Obviously, I voted for Alfonso for the men – I think he was the most consistent of all the male ringers we’ve had, and also the best showman; I also think part of his appeal was that he was a really organic, natural mover that seemed to really get into the pocket of whatever dance was thrown his way, even if he had no previous experience with it. While I agreed with my coworker that Corbin was more athletic and likely had more refined technique than Alfonso, I think he wasn’t as much of a natural as Alfonso and had to work harder to appear at ease with the movement of some of the dances – which didn’t always work, and made him a lot less consistent throughout his season.

For the ladies, it wasn’t as cut-and-dry for me – my knee-jerk answer was Nicole, but then I remembered she had some ups-and-downs and some dances that she wasn’t naturally good at (her first rumba and her samba come to mind); then I thought of Meryl, but while her technique was usually flawless, I remember thinking she sometimes lacked in the showmanship department, and could be a timid mover at times. Then I thought of Kristi Yamaguchi, who was a strong dancer AND entertainer, but I remember thinking that she seemed to always have that skater’s “perma-smile” that made her look a tad cheesy at times.  As surprising as this may be for some of you, I actually ended up picking Zendaya as the best female dancer we’ve seen on the show – for a lot of the same reasons I picked Alfonso: she was consistent, she was a showman, and she was a very NATURAL mover.  Granted, I thought Val failed her in the choreography department on multiple occasions (which may have eventually prevented her from winning, I think), and I didn’t love every single dance; but I do think she probably had the best skill set to work with, and seemed the most comfortable out on the floor.

So what do YOU guys think? Vote in the polls below, and then tell us how you voted & why 🙂

PureDWTS 10th Anniversary Special – Who Do You Hope to See Back?

After much speculation (and a lot of questions!) we now know that the 10th Anniversary Special is taping this coming Tuesday, April 21, and will air on April 28  May 7 (or May 14, depending on who you ask).  What we aren’t so positive on is who will be returning to dance – Deep Throat has confirmed that Kelly & Alfonso will be participating, and thanks to Claire for the heads-up on this interesting post to Emmitt’s charity auction. So who else might we see? And who do we Pure girls want to see? Read on…

ETA1: Ok, got some new info that clarifies the format of the anniversary special a bit.  Apparently the list of returning celebs is MASSIVE; HOWEVER – not everyone returning is going to be performing individually.  Most of them are going to be performing in groups, and they’re doing brand new dances.  For example – a bunch of the NFL players are going to be performing together (squeeeee!!!) and so far, it’s definitely going to be Emmitt, Kurt Warner, Jacoby, and Donald…and there may be more 😀 Not gonna lie – about crashed my car when I got that text from Deep Throat.  I would guess that their respective pros are going to be performing with them. Now with that knowledge under our belts, I’m guessing that Kristi, Katherine (yes, I know she’s pregnant, but she’s on the list), Chelsea, and Sadie may be performing as a group with Mark.  As far as Deep Throat knows right now, the only couples dancing individually are Kelly & Val, Alfonso & Witney, and Meryl & Maks.

ETA2: Guess I need to clarify a few things so that this post does not become a royal pain in my ass 🙂 First: I HAVE INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, ETC. TOO.  If Melissa & Tony confirm they’re in, I will see it, and I will get around to posting it WHEN I’M NO LONGER ASLEEP.  Repeatedly tweeting me and commenting here will not make it go any faster.  Second: I mentioned above that the list of returning celebs is HUGE.  The list below isn’t comprehensive, it was just what DT could remember off the top of his/her head.  There is NO USE in getting bent outta shape about your favorite not being included (yet) – there is definitely more that what we have here.  BREATHE. Three: some of you have tweeted me with some pretty flimsy findings that supposedly confirm that so-and-so is in or whatnot.  Unless a celeb states “I’m going to be on the anniversary special” or I get confirmation from Deep Throat, they’re not going on the “confirmed” list.  I added a new section for “random chatter” where I might post things like that, if I find them relevant.  Fourth: Don’t be that annoying person that continually DM’s myself, Heidi, Vogue, or John begging to know if [insert celeb or pro here] is coming back for the special.  All we know right now is posted here, and we’ll share more if we hear more.  Fifth: hearing conflicting reports about when the special is airing – it’s either the 7th or 14th.  At this point, all I care is that it’s NOT THIS WEEK…

ETA3: More names confirmed for the big NFL players group dance.  Also: Anna will be performing in it, so she is back.

ETA4: Per Deep Throat, 3 of Derek’s former partners and 3 of Mark’s former partners are all dancing together (with Derek & Mark) in a “bromance”-themed dance.  Sadie may have an individual dance.

ETA5: In yet another scheduling shakeup, Anniversary Special will now air next Tuesday, Apr. 28; first results show is pushed to the following Tuesday, May 5.  Single elim in week 7; double elim moved to week 8. Discuss.

Confirmed for 10th Anniversary Special:

Kelly Monaco & Val (season 15 All-Stars, 3rd place) – doing their paso doble and/or their surfer flamenco
Alfonso Ribeiro & Witney (season 19 champions) – doing their salsa
Meryl Davis & Maks (season 18 champions) – some individual dance
Emmitt Smith (season 3 champion) – NFL player group dance
Jacoby Jones (season 16, 3rd place) – NFL player group dance
Kurt Warner (season 11, 5th place) – NFL player group dance
Donald Driver (season 14 champion) – NFL player group dance
Jerry Rice (season 2 runner-up) – NFL player group dance
Michael Irvin (season 9, 7th place) – NFL player group dance
Hines Ward (season 12 champion) – NFL player group dance
Chelsea Kane (season 12, 3rd place) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6 champion) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Katherine Jenkins (season 14 runner-up) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Sadie Robertson (season 19 runner-up) – individual dance (?)
Maria Menounos (season 14, 4th place) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Amber Riley (season 16 champion) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Amy Purdy (season 18 runner-up) – Derek/Mark “bromance” group dance
Chelsie Hightower – not sure who she’s dancing with or what they’re doing, but she confirmed she’ll be back
Anna Trebunskaya – dancing in the NFL players group dance (and possibly others)
Melissa Rycroft & Tony (season 8, 3rd place; season 15 All-Stars champions) – Tony confirmed on Instagram; I’m guessing they’re doing an individual dance

Confirmed as not involved:

Shawn Johnson (season 8 champion, season 15 All-Stars runner-up) – knee injury
Zendaya (season 16 runner-up) – had other commitments in NYC, per her mom

Random chatter – take with a grain of salt:

Bill Engvall – tweeted this the other day – see Emma’s response further down
Margaret Cho – could be her in the background of this Instagram pic posted by Allison
Janel Parrishwill be at the show – but unclear if she’s actually dancing or will just be in the audience Read more..

Janel Parrish Scheduled To Join DWTS Live Tour, New Val Chmerkovskiy Interview

If you go to TBO.com, you can read a new interview with Val Chmerkovskiy. He talks of Dancing With The Stars, his partners, and how he was disappointed in a 3rd place finish last season. He also talks on the showmance with his partner Janel Parrish and how people had the wrong impression of their relationship. He also talks a little on the Dancing With The Stars Live Tour. Note that Season 19 partner Janel Parrish will join the tour when it gets to California.

Chmerkovskiy says his former partner Parrish is scheduled to join the tour when it gets to California. There were rumors that the two became an item during this 19th season and that Parrish had fallen for the charming Ukrainian-born dancer.

Chmerkovskiy’s previous partners include former “Wonder Years” star Danica McKellar, comic Sherri Shepherd, actress Kelly Monaco, actress Elizabeth Berkley, and Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis.

“And I loved dancing with every one of them,” he says, adding that because Parrish was close to his age and they looked good together people got the wrong impression about what he calls “showmance” rather than romance.

“My commitment and dedication never change,” he says. “I was very proud of her. She was incredible, truly incredible. She was willing to work hard, and she was so beautiful. I literally have no regrets about the experience.”

He says he was disappointed in the third-place finish because he is so competitive. He has yet to be part of a winning team on “Dancing.” He also finished in third place with Kelly Monaco during “Dancing’s” all-star season.

Now focused on the tour, Chmerkovskiy has other career goals. He and his brother, dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, own a chain of dance studios (Dance With Me) with locations in Connecticut, New York and near their New Jersey-area home. He says they want to expand the franchise to the West Coast. Since he was a child, he has played the violin and hopes to perform professionally one day. He also raps under the stage name of VC and has released one album.

He doesn’t know if he will be back for season 20 of “Dancing With the Stars” because ABC has yet to announce the cast.

“Right now, I am enjoying the tour without the pressure of being judged,” he says.

PureDWTS Season 19 Finale Poem: “The Final Curtain Call – Encore Please”

Below is Lois with her last poem for Dancing With The Stars Season 19….

My final poem for Season 19 – Tuesday Night Finale!

As I was thinking of a poem title, a few things came to my mind. The Finale Shows feel like a curtain call for the seasons. The entire production of DANCING WITH THE STARS is celebrated with one mammoth, gargantuan Curtain Call! From the journeys of the dancers to all of the dancing pairs showcasing one of their dances for the seasons! The Finale is an extravaganza unequaled by any other show on the air today. Music and dancing emanate from every pore of the ballroom. The ballroom shakes with appreciation for what this show represents – SIMPLY THE BEST ENTERTAINMENT SHOW ON THE PLANET! I added ENCORE PLEASE to the title because we don’t want this marvelous show to end each season. Tears always come to my eyes to see this show end at 11 pm. We would take as many encores of every show that ever aired! I have seen them all! I love this show so much! My happy happy place! Without further adieu I bring you:

PureDWTS Poem For The Night One Finale – “An Epic Evolution Of Dance”

Here is Lois back with another one of her fun poems….this time, for night one of Dancing With The Stars finale….

My poem for the Monday night show – Week 11 – Finals

When I was thinking how to approach this poem, I thought of two words – epic and evolution. The finalists have undergone an evolution throughout the season. And the Freestyles are always epic, but the four Freestyles we saw were extra-epic, raising the bar for freestyles going forward in coming seasons.

AN EPIC EVOLUTION OF DANCE

AN EPIC EVOLUTION OF DANCE, finalists growing through the season
Dances re-wound, the finalists grew by leaps and bounds, for a reason

Freestyles were epic taking the dances to astounding, amazing heights
AN EPIC EVOLUTION OF DANCE, a grand display, blazing bright lights

The opening, a pro-pelling extravaganza, full of spirit, a grand showcase
Highlighting the pros, men and ladies, full of gleam, of glamour, of grace Read more..

Rob Wade Talks On Who Is Staying And Who Is Leaving Dancing With The Stars, More Finale Interviews

There has been much speculation about Cheryl Burke and whether she will be back on the next season of Dancing With The Stars. According to Executive Producer Rob Wade, she’s decided to exit the show. Tuesday night was her last night. Below is more from The Wrap. Note that he also says Len Goodman and Julianne Hough will be returning to judge full time next season.

ETA: You can read more with Rob Wade at this link. He talks about ratings, his vision for the 10th anniversary, and more.

Wade feels that the popular pro’s exit gives the series a chance to highlight other dancers.

“We’ll only survive as a show if we keep innovating and changing. It’s very sad to see cast members leave, but again that gives you the opportunity to grow. So, I’m quite positive about having the opportunity to bring new people in or bring back some of the old faces.”

Additionally, head judge Len Goodman, who took a several weeks off this past season due to conflicts with shooting the show’s U.K. version, will be back full-time on Season 20. And although there’s some scheduling conflicts still to be resolved, Julianne Hough is also contracted to return in the spring to the judges’ table.

“A judging panel isn’t about individuals. It’s about chemistry. That has happened remarkably quickly for Julianne in that role,” Wade said. “I couldn’t be happier.”

“I think the ballroom experience and the dance experience and the star quality and vibrancy that Julianne has brought to the panel has been exceptional,” he continued. “I also think that the way that Carrie Ann [Inaba], Bruno [Tonioli] and Len have embraced her and have individually been so great this season, as well, has been wonderful. I think it shows their character that they can do that. The three of them have been absolutely wonderful in welcoming Julianne in and I think it has been lovely to watch.”

Sad, I’m going to miss Cheryl. I hope she changes her mind…especially for my Dad’s sake. For the full article, see The Wrap. Thanks to Lisa for the heads up on this news. Below are some interviews with The Wrap from last night as well….
