PureDWTS Season 19, Week 3 – Power Rankings

Well, I guess the euphoria of having my dream contestant on DWTS would finally wear off – and this was the week that it happened.  What a three-ring circus of nitpicking, wonky scoring, and overall chaos.  From what I saw from the judges – crack is whack, and so is meth, heroin, and bath salts, apparently.  Julianne wins the “twatwaffle of the night” award, for generally just being a bit of a cranky b*tch – so in other words, she was filling in for Len.  Hooray.

Sorry, but the wrong person went home – Randy may not have been the best dancer, but he was not nearly as bad as the score he got last week OR this week…but hey, the judges need their scores & critiques justified, so they had to screw him somehow.  Absolutely no reason that he should have been forced to go first TWO weeks in a row, basically making a mad dash from the opening  number to the quickchange; and to add insult to injury, this week he had to do it after being told he was in jeopardy.  Classy, Wade. I just might have to spoil a bunch of sh*t early to get back at you…

…as for Kevin, I actually think he turned out being a pretty decent judge.  I liked that he didn’t seem like he was out to really critique anyone, and tried to see the positive in everyone’s routines.  Also enjoyed his humor, and thought it was kinda cool how he seemed genuinely moved by Bethany & Derek’s dance.  He can come back anytime and enthusiastically yell out scores ;-)

1.) TIE: Bethany & Derek and Janel & Val – So the first two perfect 40’s of the season.  I feel one was deserved; the other? Meh. Felt like an awful lot of emphasis was placed on Janel & Val’s struggles with switching the routine, there was a lot of futzing around at the beginning of the routine, and then the score was almost given as a consolation prize for putting up with the crap.  Sure, Janel handled what she was given decently well – she should, given her background – but a 40? For wiping Val’s abs with a towel? Sorry, not buying it.  But hey, they seem bound & determined to make Vajanel happen, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.  As for Bethany – I had been worried, after hearing that her ankle injury was still very much an issue; but thank the lord Derek was able to choreograph something that was true to Singin’ in the Rain while being feasible for her to execute.  God bless umbrella work that doesn’t go awry :-) And Bethany kept up, and for the first time, she really seemed 100% invested in the routine, which is what I’ve been wanting from her since the first week. I don’t see either going anywhere for awhile, but it should be interesting to see who fares better next week… Read more..

Dancing with the Stars 19, Week 1 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

Well, lookie here…for one week, at least, Courtney and I are in a “mood”. Duck and cover, and sensitive readers beware – we spare almost no one, most of the time.

Why I want to do dancing with the stars: What the Women were REALLY Saying:
Janel: Cuz I’m Hawaiian and mama needs a showmance.
Sadie: They won’t let me dance in Louisiana and religious girls don’t suck…at dancing.
Lolo: They let me dance but I sucked real bad. And that gave me a sad.
Lea: I danced great but ballet man said I was short and plain. Suck it, Misha.
Bethany: People were mean to me and now they can suck it.
Betsy: I can do the splits better then any of these young chicks; in my head I’m a Rockette.

Why I want to do dancing with the stars: What the Men were REALLY Saying:
Alfonso: Because there’s more glitter than on the biggest loser.
Tommy: The wife is more impressed by amazing dance moves than smoke clouds from the weed.
Tavis: I’m not serious! Blah blah blah gravitas blah blah blah gravitas blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah dammit. :::zzzzz:::
Antonio: I wanted to revive my career for years, and this is just the show to do it.
Jonathan: I miss my dad.
Randy: Fighters are people too. Agree with me or I kill you.
Michael: Bill Engvall got to dance with hot chicks. I can dance with hot chicks too. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Julianne Hough On Judging DWTS: “It’s all about honesty and tough love” (New Interview And Pics)

The Insider interviewed Julianne Hough on her love life (I think she has finally found “the one” and what a sweet, down to earth, and genuine guy!). They also ask Julianne about judging Dancing With The Stars. ‘It’s all about honesty and tough love” much like the way she teaches dance. More below. Picture above courtesy of Getty Images.

ETA: If you can’t see the video below, see this link.

ETA2: You can also read another new interview at TV Guide. Below is a take. Thanks to Abby for the heads up!

Now that there are four judges on the panel, will we be seeing any guest appearances?
Hough: I think so. I think that grumpy old Len still has to go back and forth to the U.K. for the show … so I’m sure there’s going to be a few weeks where we either add or replace Len for a week or something like that.

This is the first season that Conrad Green won’t be producing the show. Can fans expect any other big changes under new boss Rob Wade?
Hough: This isn’t the same show that I was on. It’s the same idea obviously, but it’s a new show. It’s revamped. The dancing, the performances, the skill level has gone up so much, so dramatically from the time that I was on to now. … As much as it’s coming home to my family, it’s like my family’s all grown-up now and it’s like a whole new show. I’m really excited.

What do you think about this season’s cast?
Hough: We have some celebrities that have been around for a long time, but some new fresh faces that are exciting that we might not know very well, because maybe we don’t watch Duck Dynasty or Pretty Little Liars. … It’s exciting to see and grow with our celebrities and not have a preconceived notion of who they are. … I think these are all people that we’re going to be on the journey from Day One with them, with almost no expectation. The only person that I would feel like we have a little bit of expectation from would be Alfonso, just because of the Carlton dance. But that’s literally the only one. I think for everybody else, it’s kind of like … we’re going to be on that journey with them. We have no expectation, which is really exciting.

Dancing with the Stars Season 19 – “What do you mean I’m a ringer??” Update

Introduction

A couple of seasons ago, I created a set of criteria with which to measure the benefits some dancers on DWTS have compared to the other dancers. That is, ringers versus non-ringers. I attempted to be as logical and scientific as possible, although it’s impossible to remove all subjectivity from the issue. But it’s far better than simply saying “so and so isn’t a ringer, IMO”. In your opinion? If your opinion is purely subjective with no effort at logical or rational thought, then what good is it??

No good at all, actually. The original series sprung from an effort to debunk the old, tired and stupid claim that the only reason Derek does well is because he gets all the good partners and no one else gets them. Utter BS, of course. It would be a good idea to read that series before starting this one as I can’t guarantee that I’ll include all the same rationale this second time around and I don’t take well to discussing a subject with someone who is so rude as to not read the blogs. Bruno Tonioli Chats On Julianne Hough, Len Goodman, and Keeping DWTS Fresh (New Interview)

More with Bruno Tonioli!! Parade interviewed him about Dancing With The Stars. He talks of why Len Goodman needs some time off this season. He also chats about Julianne Hough and keeping the show fresh. More below. Don’t miss reading the full interview at Parade.

How do you think she’ll mesh with the rest of the judges?
“She’s not a beginner in that respect as well. And I think in general, not just with Julianne, you have to be yourself. You have to express yourself and your own feelings. You can’t really worry too much about what the others are going to say. You have to stick with your thoughts and express your thoughts and your feelings in a way that I think connects with the public. My definition of it is that I don’t see myself as there to make an ultimate decision. I feel you have to engage with the public. I don’t consider myself as this totalitarian ruler, I think what you have to do is engage the public into a kind of conversation. We have our opinion and I’m not saying I’m right, but that’s what I feel, and you want to connect with an audience so they feel they can have a conversation with you and I think she can do that very well.”

What are some other changes fans can look forward to this season?
“I think another thing with DWTS is that it’s a constantly evolving show. I think, having been there from the beginning, there’s no drastic changes, but there will be these little things that will keep it fresh and evolving. The dancing is getting better, the production is getting better. I almost say it’s like a love affair, to keep a lover interested you can’t change too much, but you have to always surprise them [laughs]. And that’s really the key to keeping the show fresh and exciting. Our fans are so lovely and so loyal and we’ve never taken them for granted. We’re not just showing up and doing more of the same, we try to keep it real.”

Two more days and counting!
