Dancing with the Stars – Winning Freestyles Through the Years, Part One

All the talk about freestyles actually had me go back and watch quite a few of the winners and losers to see what the couples have to live up to on Monday. It’s a rather daunting task, to create one that is really good and, just as important, MEMORABLE. If you subscribe to the Derek Hough school of thought, you want it to be remembered more than you want the MBT. Which of the couples will manage that Monday night?? A couple of them have really good track records, for sure. :-)

Season 1 – it’s rather shocking to watch season 1′s freestyles and remember that they did ACTUAL ballroom. You’ll note that once the Hough Ballas Crowd came along, the bar on the freestyles rose considerably. This one was not bad, considering the time frame, but there were a lot of mis-steps in it. Pay particular attention to the judges and how mellow they are and non-dramatic. This was before they became invested in being the stars of the show. Read more..

Derek And Julianne Hough Talk About DWTS, Judging, Amy Purdy, And Their Move LIVE On Tour

Be sure you head to Pure Derek Hough when you get a moment. Heidi and I have posted some fun new pictures, screen caps, articles, and interviews with Amy Purdy and Derek Hough this week that you won’t want to miss seeing.

Also, Derek and Julianne Hough talked about judging and Dancing With The Stars on Access Hollywood yesterday(seen below). I have to say.. looking back for how Julianne judged Danica and Maks seals it further for how right she was(imo). Since then, we’ve seen Danica shell out better dances. We also seen Maks stepping up his choreography with Meryl in their last few dances. So, question: was Julianne really that bad or wrong with how she judged Maks like so many haters and critics went on about at the time??

I also love what Derek said about why he did Dancing With The Stars this season and how it’s come to mean something more for him in a deeper way versus doing it only to win a Mirror Ball (how’s that in answering your question about Maks, Kit? *roll eyes).

Julianne and Derek also promoted their new Move LIVE On Tour in the new Access Hollywood interview. This tour, Ballroom With A Twist, and Sway -The Trilogy is a summer dance calling to fill the void in the off season of Dancing With The Stars. If you haven’t bought tickets yet for Derek and Julianne’s tour, be sure you do so here or at the venues listed. Too fun…

Dancing with the Stars Season 18, Week 4 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Okay, after being out of town for a few days, I finally got to watch the whole show. My thoughts…in a bullet list. :-)

  • Geez, all that brouhaha over Julianne’s comments and that was it?? She qualified the crap out of it and said she loves Maks but…. Really, I was expecting harsher, after all the discussion here.
  • Candace was TOTALLY hosed. And I mean totally. That was a very good dance and Tony did a good job with it. WTF is going on here?? Is she being sacrificed on the Meryl alter?
  • Candace’s dance was about a thousand times better than Danica’s, thanks to Maks. Is he EVER going to stop putting all that non-dancing in his choreo? About time he was called on it.
  • LOVED Drew’s dance – Witney got it just right. I’m liking this girl a lot.

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 4 – Power Rankings

Tonight’s episode of Sesame Street was brought to you by the phrases “these are the couples you chose!”, “keep it all in the family”, and “incestual”.  :-) I know I can’t be the only one that thought they were trying to drive the point home just a bit too hard that the couples we saw last night were the ones that we voted for – defensive much? Had they actually given Meryl to Derek (as the voters had), it would have created an entire cascade of partner changes that I think would have created an entirely different outcome last night.  But that’s neither here nor there – I guess I’m just sort of over the entire partner switch at this point. It’s over and done with, and it’s hard to dwell on what a turd the whole thing was when we’ve got Disney Week  next week :-)

I do feel the need to touch on the phrase “keep it all in the family!” though – on the surface, it seems innocuous enough, but I feel like it’s yet another barrier the Chmerkovskiy brothers (and Tony, to a lesser degree) put up between themselves and the other pros on the show.  I know they seem to have a sort of “us against the world” mentality, but more often than not, they themselves are the ones creating that environment.  “Keep it all in the family” says to me “I don’t trust the other pros.  I refuse to associate with the other pros.  I am better than the other pros. Don’t let the other pros near my partner…mine, mine, MINE!” It implies that the only family that matters is theirs – and the relationships with the other pros that they’ve cultivated over the years are worthless.  The Chmerkovskiys are a family, but so is DWTS – when the cards are down, the pros do look out for each other. I guess the reason I’m bringing it up is because I was rather surprised to hear Meryl repeat it in her package – I think it was probably just out of politeness to Val & Maks, but in the spirit of the switch (which so many of the other pros embraced with open arms – including Tony), it just seemed almost like self-segregation.

I’m left feeling rather puzzled by the judges’ comments & scoring last night – there were certain couples that got raked across the coals that I didn’t think were that bad (Candace & Tony, Charlie & Peta), couples that got treated with kid gloves (and this is probably gonna get me in trouble, but Amy & Mark), and couples that just did not really register at all with the judges (Danica & Maks, Cody & Sharna). And apparently there was fallout backstage last night after the show – a source says that Peta was in tears and was being consoled by Charlie & Sharna, and Mark was allegedly overheard saying that he thinks he’s “as good as done” next week thanks to Tony (which I don’t agree with…at least not the reasoning).  Tough day at the office for those two :-(

On the upside, we got a pretty cute opening number (that was perhaps a little heavy on the “switch” theme, but whatever), and the Macy’s Stars of Dance segment returned triumphantly with a pretty cool flamenco-infused number by Derek, Artem, Sasha, Henry, Jon Platero, & the beast that is Kathryn McCormick.  I smell some potential Emmy fodder, if the Stars of Dance segments in the coming weeks measure up to the one we saw last night! Julianne also returned as a judge, to both cheers and jeers – and WTF was up with her eyebrows??? Somebody get Anastasia Soare on the phone, because somebody is using the wrong color pencil on Miss Hough…

Bear with me as I try not to repeat too much of the stuff I said in the live discussion post last night – guess I should have held back a bit for my power rankings :-P I went ahead and put the original pro partner names in parentheses here, as they will be the ones potentially at-risk to be eliminated next week. More Of The Cast Comments On Switching Partners, Julianne Hough Excited To Judge DWTS Again

Today interviewed Tony Dovolani, Peta Murgatroyd, James Maslow, and Derek Hough on the Switch Up dance. Below is take from the link. Let’s just say …they are happy they get to go back to their original partners next week and yet embrace something new at the same time. Here is more…

Murgatroyd explained that she was “grateful” to have partner James Maslow by her side, and wasn’t looking forward to the possibility of losing him. It seems the “Dancing” powers that be listened to her and her fellow hoofers.

“It was the general consensus,” Murgatroyd said. “Nobody (wanted the twist), especially if it was going to be for more than one week.”

According to her partner, “nobody” included the fans.

“It’s more than just us,” Maslow said. “I also think the show looked at fan reaction that were saying, ‘This (switch-up) isn’t cool.’ I don’t think fans want to see this kind of drama. They want to see (original) couples struggling and succeeding together.”

According to pro Tony Dovolani, who’s dancing alongside “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star NeNe Leakes, the producers soon saw the error in their original plans.

“Producers are realizing this isn’t the greatest idea, and they’re bringing us back with our original partners (after this),” Dovolani said.

But, as it turns out, there’s one professional dancer who welcomes the twist — no matter how it plays out. That’s five-time winner Derek Hough, who suggested the idea in seasons past.

“Producers have done a really great job of making this feel like a new show,” Hough told us. “I’m really proud to be a part of it. The switch-up will bring a new dynamic where we don’t know what’s going to happen.”

More at Today.

Nene talked on the Switch up, the competition, and more with Ellen. Check out what she does when Ellen tries to guess her switch up partner. lol

Also, People interviewed Julianne Hough about judging Dancing With The Stars tonight. She’s excited to be back in the ballroom. More at the link including her thoughts on Mark Ballas and how she didn’t mean to sound so harsh on he and Christina Milian last season.

I’m very excited. It’s my home away from home,” says the former Dancing pro-turned- actress about TV’s most popular ballroom.

“This season everybody is so great. We’re in the fourth week and everybody is really intriguing,” Hough says, admitting that serving as a judge can sometimes be just as nerve-wracking as competing on the show.

“You go in trying to give constructive criticism, but when the nerves get to you, you sometimes put your foot in your mouth, which I have done in the past. So this is my do-over,” says the two-time DWTS champ – whose stint as a judge last season hit a notable snag.

Erin Andrews Interviewed About DWTS Replacement Rumors, The Switch Up Dance, And More

TV Guide intereviewed Erin Andrews about the rumors that the producers of Dancing With The Stars are thinking of replacing her. She immediately called producers and asked them about it. Below is what she tells TV Guide…

“I’ve got to be honest. … It kind of got me worried and scared,” Andrews told TVGuide.com last week, noting that she immediately called producers to do damage control. “I just went back and forth with the producers like, ‘Are we good here? Please tell me what I need to work on. Please tell me what I need to do. ‘And they’re like, ‘We couldn’t be happier.’”

And below are her thoughts about the Switch Up Dance, which celebs she’s the most impressed with so far, and the stiff competition….

Next week is the switch-up. As a former competitor, how would you have felt about switching partners?
Andrews: Oh, I wouldn’t have liked it, but I like that the show’s doing it. I think every little twist and turn they can add to the show and spice it up — it’s been on for 18 seasons, so you’ve got to do something to keep it new and fresh. But I wouldn’t have liked it. You get in such a comfort zone with your pro dancer, and you know they know your weaknesses and your strengths. Somebody like Amy, who has been obviously going through so much with Derek [Hough], and Derek really seems to understand her. Not that the other pro dancers wouldn’t, but it gets you out of your comfort zone. You’re already out of your comfort zone doing ballroom dancing in front of millions of people on prime-time television, so it just adds one more element of like, oh God, what am I doing here?

Which celebs have you been most impressed with this season?
Andrews: Well, I think right off the bat most impressed and most surprised would be Amy. I don’t think any of us really knew what to expect. And to say that we’ve all been moved to tears pretty much every week is an understatement. … You know, she was already a very inspiring person, but [Derek's] just kind of peeling off these layers for her and showing her, and showing all of us, what is possible, and that’s so special. And I just get choked up every single time I think about it, because I’m so proud of her and I don’t even really know her very well. I’m so thankful somebody like her is showing really all her strengths. You would think they would be weaknesses, and they’re not. Danica [McKellar] has been unbelievable. She’s really talented. And I think Candace [Cameron Bure] too. A lot has to be said about somebody who hasn’t taken a dance class before. Mark is a very talented and special choreographer, and he’s really playing to her strengths and I think that’s very cool to see as well. [Charlie White's] personality is really starting to come out. I saw it especially last week. He’s so sweet. … And Meryl [Davis], I think she’s like a Disney princess. She’s just so graceful and so gorgeous, and I’m so glad she was paired with Maksim [Chmerkovskiy] for so many reasons. I’ve really enjoyed both of them.

It seems like the competition is especially stiff this season.
Andrews: My mom said that the other night. My mom watches the show, she loves the show. … I think with my year, you could kind of see that Nicole Scherzinger, was going to blow everybody out of the water. But this year, the competition [is fierce], and the stories behind it — and that’s exactly what the show wanted and needed. It’s been a really fun journey.

Dancing with the Stars Season 18, Week 2 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Ah, the week of switch up voting. Is someone trying to make me hate this show?? I mean really.  A logical person can look at the voting contest and sense a total clusterf*^k – that the producers will count the votes in which ever of the 6 or 8 ways gives them the results they desire. But I’ll let Courtney go into more detail on that – it just annoys me, as do the Maks/Val fans who insist that Derek fans are only voting to see Derek with Meryl so he can win again. Uh, hello, but I think most Derek fans neither expect nor WANT him to stay with Meryl. I know I speak for a good number of them when I say – we better get Amy back or there will be hell to pay.

Anyway, the switch up is mildly relevant to this post because the voting for it could play spoiler in one couples hopes for the mirror ball trophy. I always wonder if fans who do the twitter voting are good multi-taskers.  I know I am, but Vogue says it’s cuz I’m a Gemini…or something like that. :-D Anyway, there is some serious spamming going on. Like Design a Dance, it’s not the number of fans you have, but how badly those fans want you to win.  And how good they are at Spamming. Actually, that could be said for the whole show.  :-)  So, do we think that someone is going to be a shocking elimination because their fans were too busy tweeting?? Amy? Meryl? Danica? Nene?

I put those four out there because the Derek fans and the C-bros plus Tony fans have been hitting it hard on the twitter vote. Amy has the smallest fanbase on her own, but Derek’s fanbase is the biggest of the pros, judging by Twitter followers.  I would hazard that Meryl is safe, but it’s possible any of the other three could be a victim, I suppose.

But let’s look at the scores and see just how likely that is.

Week 2 Table 1

Dang, they put a huge spread between Billy Dee and the next lowest group comprised of Nene, Drew and Candace.  The judges REALLY want to get rid of him. Well, he was not a great dancer. Entertaining, but not great. And oh my gosh am I developing a straight girl crush on Emma or what? She impressed the hell out of me in her work with Billy Dee – seriously, she’s fantastic.  Anyway, I think the judges have finally realized that if they believe someone is the worst dancer, they can’t be whipping out 6s and 7s left and right, they have to get serious. But where they serious enough??  Look at the table below, which gives you all the matchups for week 2.

Week 2 Table 2

You’ll see that Billy Dee needs a seemingly large number of votes to get past either Nene, Drew or Candace – about 24.6k votes per million votes cast. You might remember that he needed nearly 20k to stick around over Diana and Sean last week. What’s another 5k?  Well, I would hazard a guess that Drew and Candance, at least, are a good bit more popular than either Diana and Sean. But just how popular is Billy Dee??  Nene is the one I can’t put my finger on.  Twitter followers is certainly an indication of popularity, but that does NOT always translate into votes on DWTS. In fact, it often doesn’t.

I could be wrong, but I really see the only one vulnerable to Billy Dee  is Nene.  Why? Well, I think that Drew and Candace surely have enough juice to get past Nene and keep Billy Dee away.  But what about the next level up? Cody? Surely Cody has a shit ton of fangirls and he’ll be safe for a while, right? I think so – but note that Nene only needs 4k votes to go by Cody. Since I don’t think that Nene is doing that much better than Amy and Danica in votes, and Billy Dee certainly isn’t, I think those two, along with Meryl and Charlie are certainly safe. James best keep that score up there or he could be in trouble.

Anyway, no sense in drawing it out. I think that Billy Dee is likely to go home. If the Star Wars fans are out in full force, then I think Nene is the one most likely to leave. Candace wouldn’t shock me, neither would Cody since all the talk seems to be Amy/Meryl/Charlie – but I really think it’s going to be Billy Dee or Nene.  Billy Dee first, Nene second.  We find out soon!
