Dancing with the Stars Season 24, Week 4 – Manipulation Mayhem

The last several seasons, you’ve heard Courtney and I complain ad nauseum about the ways that this show is manipulated. Sometimes subtly and other times very overtly. From lack of interviews with Erin, to lack of overall PR, to song/dance assignments, to the packages.  Most people don’t even notice it because the tendency in humans is to believe what they see – even when they should know better.

Ironically, when we have a Bachelor on the show is when I think to start this series – the Bachelor is probably the single most manipulated, produced, heavily edited (however you want to phrase it) show on television that is so-called “reality”.  Here is where I plug the show UNreal which is a take off on the Bachelor series and is a (supposedly fictionalized) scripted – more scripted – drama.  Fantastic series – I highly recommend it. Produced by a former Bachelor producer, it will REALLY make you think twice about how much you believe on DWTS or any other reality show. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS Season 24, Week FOUR – Dancing by the Numbers!

Yeah, still thinking Erika. 🙂

My track record isn’t so good so far though. Ah well, some seasons you got it and other seasons you don’t.

I didn’t see anything to be terribly outraged over this past Monday. Funny that our big ringers pretty much leave me cold. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both are dancing with Chmerkovskiys. They just kinda fail to really show their partners in a positive light. Too much talking, walking and not doing the assigned style. Val is doing a better job than Alan/Maks is, but really dude – STFU and let Normani have her moment.

Anyway, let’s get to our scores. Read more..

DWTS Season 24, WEEK FOUR – LIVE BLOG (Spoilers)

Most Memorable Year…usually the night of rumba and (poorly done) contemporary. Be sure to check the “Who’s Dancing” post as the running order has been updated…and it ain’t lookin’ good for Nick, dang it. Not sure what they have against him.

Oh and CAI said she wants me to come on DWTS and dance with her. LOL. I think she really wants Derek and got me by mistake. 😉

Okay, these intros are SOOO scripted it ain’t even funny. I think it was Normani and Nick that gave it away – neither are actors so there you go. Read more..

DWTS Season 24, Week THREE – Dancing by the Numbers!

Thanks to Derek and Julianne Hough for their fantastic performance the other night…and for blowing up my Derek twitter search. That was a struggle to get through. 🙂 Amazing dance – I loved it.

As for the rest of the dancing, no one struck me as horrible, but at the same time, I was only really impressed by Nancy and David.  I still wonder why Nick is getting so badly hosed every week. What is the deal? I have a hard time believing they are trying to give Peta an early exit – she’s a competitor and there’s no way she wants an early exit, baby or not.  And fact is, Nick is NOT a dancer like many of the women are and he’s doing pretty darn good for someone who is a complete novice. I think he was better than Bonner by a good bit (and Peta is doing better for him than Sharna is for Bonner), yet he got the same scores from Len and Bruno as Mr. T and Charo did. In what freakin’ universe?? I love Mr. T  – but he is not the dancer that Nick is, not even close. Come on, judges. Why is the bar set so high for Nick? You’re treating him like he’s a pro not living up to expectations, instead of Joe Bachelor who’s never danced before. Read more..

DWTS Season 24, WEEK THREE – LIVE BLOG (Spoilers)

As I said in the “Who’s Dancing…” post, I can’t imagine anything worse than Vegas Night. Hopefully a few of the couples (and Derek and Julianne!!) will prove my imagination and worries unfounded. 🙂

t-minus 15 minutes…

Well, call me crazy, but I liked that opening number. I liked how they had the celebs well integrated and how they were all doing different aspects of Vegas…especially David and Sasha as dueling Elvis’s. 🙂

Man, Nick going first? Better spot…but they’re determined to have him be underscored, I think. Good on Maks for the pep talk!! Nicely done.

Yay!! Nick did a pretty darn good job on that one. A few shaky spots – head turns could have been sharper. Len come ON – that was full of content!! Read more..

Why No DWTS Promo Rant For Derek Hough’s Return, “Elastic Heart” Part 2 Preview

In Tom Bergeron’s latest facebook chat, Linz asked him why there hasn’t been any promotion for Derek Hough’s return to the ballroom? Geez….remember all the times in the past when TPTB would have promos and commercials for Maks Chmerkovksiy’s return to the ballroom? Don’t get me wrong, I loved those promos for Maks, but, why isn’t the show doing the same for Derek who has won 6 Mirror Balls (the most of anyone) and who is a 2 time Emmy winner for this show …and also much loved by fans? What’s more, and just like Linz just wrote to me, you’d think they’d want to promote the show even more being the College Basketball Finals are up against it tonight? Pretty sad. Thanks for listening to our rant and here’s to Derek and Julianne’s “Move Beyond” ‘Elastic Heart’ Part 2 performance tonight. Special Dedication and preview below courtesy of Derek’s Instagram…..

A Preview Of Julianne Hough And Derek Hough’s Performance On DWTS And Lots More

Copied from PureDerekHough:
Julianne talked with TV Guide about her and Derek’s Sia Part 2 performance for Monday night. This is awesome. Check it out

This next episode of Dancing with the Stars is a special episode for you! What can you tell us about the Move preview that we’ll see?
Julianne Hough: I’m super excited! My brother and I were lucky enough to perform a couple seasons ago to “Elastic Heart” by Sia, and that was such a special moment for us because I think it was the first time we’d done something really different on the show than what people normally expect to see from us. It was amazing, it was very authentic and something that was very personal to us. This performance is an extension of that. Again, it’s very personal to us, it talks about family and our family dynamic and what happened in our lives. The message and the moral behind it is this is our life, we’ve gone through it, and it’s sort of our closure now, but everything is going to be all right, basically. It’s to “Unsteady,” which is such a beautiful song. It tells a story about our parents getting a divorce, and we have to be there for each other even though we feel pretty unsteady at the time, but we’re going to be looking at our lives in this scene we’re setting, as adult versions of ourselves.

We have a resolve at the end, which is kind of what we’re doing right now by reconnecting with our family and this closure — not even forgiveness, but everything’s okay and everything was supposed to happen how it did. We’re in rehearsal and we’re crying and figuring out our story behind it, it’s not going to be super detailed in the dance moves but for us it’s so great because we know the meaning behind the specific moves, which was very similar to “Elastic Heart.” For me I love being able to choreograph and tell a story, it’s amazing and really fun.

With the Move Beyond tour and Dancing, you’re going to be awfully busy. Are you going to miss any episodes of Dancing because of the schedule?
Hough: I think there’s one where it was just not possible to fly back, because we are in a city where there isn’t an airport close enough to get us back in time for the show. So I think there’s only one episode I’m missing. Other than that, I will be flying back every Monday morning and taking a red eye back.

How has your brother Derek taken to not participating in this season?
Hough: Honestly, we’re so busy with the tour that we’re just focused on that. I think he’s like, “Oh man, there are some really great contestants on this season. I think it would have been fun to do that.” But literally every Monday night I come back here and start up again the next day, so we’re keeping him busy for sure.

DWTS Season 24, Week TWO – Dancing by the Numbers!

So, week 2 was…odd. Some things I understand – Rashad and Normani, Heather and Simone. But when you look at the scores, how on this planet do Nick and Charo get the same score? And how is Simone a full three points below the leaders and a point below Heather? Yeah, she had some hip hop in her routine, but so did Heather.

Anyway, there doesn’t appear to be a clear producer agenda just yet and that, combined with who danced in the last half hour really makes me wonder just who is getting the votes this season. It could make things very interesting through the rest of the season. They aren’t pushing the ringers super hard (yet) and that is…interesting. David getting the pimp spot is also interesting. Let’s take a look at the scores. Read more..

DWTS Season 24, Week One – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, here I am again. Can’t say I’m overly excited about the show this season – silly fangirls, judges acting stupid, the producers using Julianne as a Heather apologist…all very annoying.

But there were a few actual bright spots. I loved David and Rashad, I thought Nick was funny and I liked that he wasn’t afraid to call a ringer BS.  Love Simone, but I’m hoping that Sasha doesn’t play it too safe in the coming weeks. I’ve seen a lot of criticism of their Tango, but I have to say…I think it was the music. That music was crap. Just ONCE this season I would love to see an actual TANGO.  Think Alexa and Derek – that kicked ASS. Hell, just about any Tango he’s ever done. He generally goes more traditional in the tango steps and music (when he has a choice) and I think the white flowery dress and the light, not-very-tango-y music of Simone and Sasha just ruins it for me. You can see the difference if you watch many of Derek’s – dark and intense. Read more..
