DWTS Season 16, The Finale – Dancing by the Numbers

Please think about giving to Regional Food Bank, a local Oklahoma charity – I hear it’s good. If you don’t trust that, try the American Red Cross. My brother was hit by Katrina and raved about the Red Cross and everything they did in his community. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with those affected in Oklahoma. Thank you.

Well, that’s that. Can’t say I’m sad this season is over.  Seriously, another twitter vote?? Why not just fess up and admit you want Zendaya to dance again cuz this is your last chance to pimp the crap out of her. Not even CLOSE to the best freestyle of the night, yet we’re likely going to have to see it again.  Absolutely ridiculous.  By the way, Tony Dovolani – you’ve been SCHOOLED on how to do a contemporary freestyle, my friend.  You too, Maks. Take notes.  Derek pretty much ruined contemporary for the rest of you on this show going forward. Read more..

Chelsie Hightower, Louis Van Amstel, Helio Castroneves Predict The Winner Of Dancing With The Stars Season 16

Louis Van Amstel has penned a new blog at ABC. Surprisingly enough, he’s picking Kellie Picker to win the mirror ball on Dancing With The Stars (which I agree with and why). Be sure to read the link for more.

So, if you judge it on freestyle alone, Kellie will take away the Mirror Ball trophy. Looking back at her season, she has been nothing but consistent. Sometimes she was too much in her head, but always physically giving it her all.

If you look at showing personality, performance level and always giving well-rounded show stoppers, Zendaya could definitely win. She sometimes had issues finishing off her movement, but she also had very consistent weeks.

Even though Aly got a late start, by being in the middle of the pack until well into the competition, with her fan base, she might still be able to overtake Kellie and Zendaya. Like I said last week with Ingo, the same goes for Jacoby this week. The only way for him to win is if his fan base will stay up all night to vote. Otherwise, it couldn’t happen.

After all is said and done, I don’t want to just be diplomatic and not pick a winner, because that would be kind of lame, so … drumroll. Taking the entire season into account, looking at dance technique, performance, overall personality, and who I think touched us watching this season, I’d give the Mirror Ball trophy of Season 16 to Kellie Pickler!

Also, you can watch Louis, Chelsie Hightower, and dancing alumni Helio Castroneves talking on last night’s finale with GMA this morning HERE. They go over all the freestyles and the negatives and positives. In the end, two pick Kellie to win and one picks Zendaya.

Stay tuned. Miss Heidi’s new Numbers and Predictions post is coming up next!! 😉

PureDWTS Season 16 Media And Interviews After The Finale (Video Wrap Up)

Wow, what a finale on Dancing With The Stars!! All four contestants are truly winners in some way. Let’s get right to the new interviews for what took place after Monday night’s show with George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet. However, first, just a personal thank you to all of you for following along, reading us, and all of your support and participations this season. Also, don’t forget we don’t go away in the off season. We continue to report on all of the pros and cast from their dance and Red Carpet appearances and more. We also have some “exclusive” interviews planned. Courtney holds an Awards and much more. Heidi has some cool new series ideas planned….and then there is the new Cheesecake Awards. Plus, we post on all the NEW RUMORS for the new cast next season. Note: in the last off season, Jacoby Jones was rumored to dance right after the finals. So, you never know when a new rumor will pop up. It’s fun. So, don’t go away. Ok, time for some new interviews.

First up, Kellie and Derek!!! They talk of the “moment” they had during their Freestyle and the chances they took. Derek’s Mom was crying as she was so proud. Kellie is so happy for all the greatest new friends she made. Win or lose, they will cherish every moment.

George tells Jacoby that he may be an underdog, but, sometimes this can work in someone’s favor. He tells Jacoby he shouldn’t be down. Karina loves Jacoby and would not change a second of this journey. Also, there is no rest for Jacoby. As soon as Dancing With The Stars is over, he will head straight to football practice for the Baltimore Ravens. When George presses Jacoby on why he’s upset again, Jacoby says he’s mad and a competitor. He wanted higher scores, but, George says the fans could come through for them.

Aly says for whatever happens tomorrow, she knows they did their best. She stresses how ‘everyone’ did the their best. Mark talks of how they wanted to do something new and different for their freestyle. He’s proud of Aly and thinks she was the most improved dancer this season. Aly says she’s grown as a person, she had so much fun, and she just enjoyed herself. She’s learned to be more relaxed in front of the camera and trusts people more too.

George ask Val straight up on his eye injury. It was unsettling and it panicked everyone. Zendaya says win or lose, she did something she never thought possible by just making it to the finals.

There aren’t any Access Hollywood interviews posted yet, but, be sure to be watching this link as they may post some later. Same with ET Online.

E News interviewed Val and Zendaya. Oddly enough, Val thinks the eye injury helped his performance…..

“It was an hour before the show, so everybody panicked,” Val explained of his injury. “There were talks about replacing me, and that was not going to happen. I was just praying it was going to stop bleeding, which, thank God, it did because it’s a very deep cut.”

Zendaya recalled the scary moment during the rehearsal when her elbow hit Val’s eye, saying, “I already knew it was bad, and then he was going through dress rehearsal with blood all over his face. I just had to keep going because I know he wants me to keep going. He kept smiling, so that’s the cue to keep on going.”

Oddly enough, Val told us he believes the injury actually helped his performance. “My back is killing me. Like seriously killing me. My shoulder is killing me. [My eye] honestly took my mind off all that pain. I’m lucky it happened…It made me enjoy the moment a little more.”

More at E News including a video.

Lastly, Henry of POPTVDotCom also has some coverage of the cast going to dinner, etc. after the show. They express their thoughts and sympathies on the Oklahoma tornado and more. Emmitt Smith was there and talks to Henry too.

Stay tuned. More coming…. 😉

DWTS 16, The Finale – Power Rankings

Honestly, this may be the weakest finale performance night I think we’ve seen since season 5.  I think almost everyone did worse in the “judges’ choice” round than they did the first time; only one freestyle really wowed me, and the rest ranged from “eh, ok” to “WTF???” Oddly enough, the only dance I found myself really enjoying was the cha cha relay – seemed like everyone just let loose and had fun with it.  I think the judges made their agenda quite clear tonight, and I know I can’t be the only one that’s a little suspicious that the online voting is down on finale night FOR THE SECOND SEASON IN A ROW.  No excuses, Muppets – you should have had it sorted out by now so that this type of thing doesn’t happen.  Curious to me that you haven’t (or chose not to) worked out the kinks yet.  Hmmm…but anyway, let’s start in reverse order, shall we?

4th Place: Jacoby & Karina

Poor Jacoby…he just really seemed to fall apart tonight, and it’s sad because 3 weeks ago I would have said that he had the MBT in the bag.  Now, thanks to the machinations of TPTB, I think the poor guy is just suffering from a major case of burnout and just broke down tonight.  While I agree that his judges’ choice jive was slightly better from a technical standpoint, I still prefer the first iteration – because it was SO DAMN FUN.  Jacoby looked downright miserable doing this one – like he was so focused on getting the technique right that he forgot to enjoy himself…and that was really the appeal of Jacoby’s dancing all season: he just looked like he was having so damn much fun.  Was a 27 rather kind? In the great scheme of things, probably; but since the judges were handing out 30’s like Oprah again tonight, I think 27 was relatively fair.  I actually found myself enjoying he & Karina’s portion of the cha cha relay most – and I don’t think anyone can really disagree that they had the best ending transition 😉 The slide through Aly & Mark was pure genius and totally Jacoby 🙂 And speaking of “being totally Jacoby” – I actually liked his freestyle, and wasn’t expecting some of the incredulous responses I was getting on Twitter when I *gasp!* said I enjoyed it.  “But Courtney, it was SO MESSY!!!!” Was it messy? Yes.  I saw the exact same routine you guys did, and I’m fully aware when something is messy.  But at the same time, I think there’s more to a good freestyle than clean footwork and execution – there’s also HEART, and staying true to who you are.  And while some of you may have balked at his freestyle as if it were the 2nd coming of the Marie Osmond doll freestyle (it wasn’t THAT bad, guys), I applauded him for sticking to his roots and sending a dance love letter to New Orleans…that routine was NOLA & Jacoby FOR DAYS.  The band, the stepping, the tapping – I think he perfectly captured the dance culture of the Big Easy, while also dancing a routine that felt like something he’d do.  He didn’t try and act like something he’s not (unlike a certain other couple…), he didn’t pick some random theme that he had no connection to – Jacoby did Jacoby, and I dug it.  And he seemed to enjoy himself, which is why I’ve been a fan all season.  But, thanks to the judges, who have given Aly a pretty comfortable cushion, I don’t think Jacoby can really hope for any better than 4th place tomorrow.  He may, by the “grace of god” (as he put it), somehow bump Aly and take 3rd, but I’m not feeling optimistic. But I’m glad he made it to the finale, and got to dance for his hometown 🙂 Read more..

Dancing With The Stars Season 16 Finalists Talk Smack!

Just a quick update! Visit E Online if you have time before the show starts. The four finalists talk smack to each other. It’s a hoot. You can watch the video HERE. Below is a take from the link…

Derek Hough: “Do you understand what you’ve gotten yourselves into? Do you realize that people will get hurt?” Derek asked while he and partner Kellie strike an intimidating pose. “You’ll be dropping like flies and we’ll be there to clean it up,” he later warned before laughing.

Val Chmerkovskiy: Zendaya’s partner’s message started off sweet as he wished Derek a happy birthday, before adding, “Hopefully your birthday wish isn’t to win Dancing With the Stars!”

Derek Hough And Val Chmerkovskiy Blog About Dancing With The Stars Season 16 Finale

Pro dancers Derek Hough and Val Chmerkovskiy have both written new blogs before finale time on Dancing With The Stars. First up, Val writes of how different this finale is from last season. Last season it was bitter then sweet, but, this season is a “good time to win”. More below in detail including his thoughts (adding: or hints?) for why he should win since he’s never won a mirror ball before (this excuse for someone to win always annoys me. How would he have felt in his competition days if he was told he shouldn’t win since he won before? That’s not the way it should work. It should be about the best dancing, not who hasn’t won a mirror ball before or a win won’t mean the same in my opinion).

It’s finale time but this finale is different — completely different. Last season it was bitter, but then it became quickly sweet. I hate losing, but losing to someone like Tony (Dovolani) and Melissa (Rycroft) was a great feeling for me. That’s my brother pretty much, and I’m super happy for him to win because it was long overdue! I had no right — even just out of respect for Tony, to feel even one inch of, “Oh, it’s not fair!” I have the utmost love and appreciation for that champion.

But this season, I feel like it’s a good time. I don’t feel like it’s too early, I don’t feel like it’s too late. It’s a good time. I feel like if the stars can’t align this time, I’m not sure when they’ll align again. I know I said that last season with Kelly (Monaco) because she was incredible and we had an amazing season, but I never thought I’d be able to follow it up. Zendaya, complete polar opposite of what Kelly and I were, was able to follow up and follow it up in a very unique way.

There has never been a couple like us. This final between my three competitors – between them, they have about 30 seasons and six trophies. But when you look at Zendaya and I, you have never seen a champion like that.

If we win, the generosity and gratefulness that will be pouring out of my body at that moment will be overwhelming for everybody in the room. I will drown people in my appreciation!

More at Today.com.

As for Derek, he talks of the slow process this past week. He’s had some issues with his neck, but, he’s battling through. The freestyle is about “less is more” as he hinted to us in the On The Red Carpet interview,. Below he talks of the story about it and their other dances….

The story in our freestyle is we see Kellie as who she is. We often see the bright, fun, light and sweet Kellie — and she’s all those things. What you see is what you get with her. But there is a side to her that is very vulnerable and very fragile. The song is called “Beneath Your Beautiful” and it’s about showing it all. To show it all, you can’t hide behind anything. That’s why I against having a big production. I just wanted to try to make it about her ability and her dancing, and try to wow the audience with what she’s doing and not what’s around her. The production we have is fun though.

We have two other dances Monday and then the Instant Dance on Tuesday. The quickstep is extremely exhausting! It’s more difficult than our first one. The music is a lot more vigorous, so it’s faster all around. We got a 29 last time, but that quickstep was actually one of my least favorite dances, just because I felt like it was just a dance. The choreography was difficult, but it was more of a demonstration, like, “This is a quickstep.” This one, we want to put on more of a show and make it more of a finale quickstep. We just have to be really careful. There’s a fine line between doing too much and making it too busy.

The cha-cha relay is only 40 seconds each couple, but with everything this week, it’s kind of outrageous that we have it in the first place! I was like, “Awesome! Four couples in the final. That probably means less work for us.” Then it’s, “Nope! Just kidding! More work! Four couples and four dances each!” But we feel good about our pieces. Now we just have to execute.

I can’t wait. More at TV Guide.com. Also, don’t miss visiting Pure Derek Hough as soon as you can. Heidi has an article up about Derek wanting to expand his career beyond Dancing With The Stars. She has some birthday coverage and more too.

ETA: Also, be sure to check out On The Red Carpet. There is more coverage with these two couples with George Pennacchio.

Dancing with the Stars Season 16, The Finale – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

And does anyone still care?? 🙂 I’m trying to care, really I am.

Thought for the day: I looked up the actual definition of “social engineering” which lead me to “confidence trick” and “exploits characteristics of the human psyche”. Just sayin’.

This is how it stacks up so far. I don’t think the dance order has really mattered for a couple weeks in terms of voting. I think at this stage it could have more of an impact on the judges scoring. They could put Kellie and Zendaya first and judge the other two against that bar. Or Zendaya and Aly – I’m still not sure, however, that their love affair with Aly wasn’t a product of not wanting Ingo in the finale.  Same for Jacoby. I thought he was great, but I sense that he’s seen his last 30’s if he’s not getting the lion’s share of the votes. Anyway, here are the dances – think Kellie was the least favored here, not sure.  Also note that I’ve not included the instant dance on Tuesday night. As previously reported, only the top three perform that. Someone is told they are fourth place right at the beginning of the show…or within the first hour, anyway.

If I were a betting woman, I would say this will be the order…

Zendaya and Val
Dance 1 (Judges Choice): Samba
Dance 2: Cha Cha Relay
Dance 3: Freestyle
Voting # 1-800-868-3406

Kellie and Derek
Dance 1 (Judges Choice): Quickstep
Dance 2: Cha Cha Relay
Dance 3: Freestyle
Voting # 1-800-868-3401

Jacoby and Karina
Dance 1 (Judges Choice): Jive
Dance 2: Cha Cha Relay
Dance 3: Freestyle
Voting # 1-800-868-3412

Aly and Mark
Dance 1 (Judges Choice): Samba
Dance 2: Cha Cha Relay
Dance 3: Freestyle
Voting # 1-800-868-3408

Zendaya and Aly both having Samba strikes me as…fishy. I need Courtney the ballroom dancer because Samba doesn’t strike me as the “easiest” dance of the four that were handed out, but I’m honestly not sure who, if anyone, is getting hosed here. I think the Samba ladies have an easier “fake it till you make it” dance – the same can’t be said of Quickstep. I think probably Jacoby is probably the worst off, even though he LOVES to Jive. He’s FUN, but is he technically a good jiver??
