How about some new photos from the premiere of “Sway” last night in New York City? Dancing With The Stars pros Artem Chigvintsev, Val Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Sharna Burgess, Meryl Davis, Jenna Johnson, Henry Byalikov, and Peta Murgatroyd look like they took the stage by storm. See Getty Images for a slew of pictures. Below are just a few. Beautiful!!
A couple of seasons ago, I created a set of criteria with which to measure the benefits some dancers on DWTS have compared to the other dancers. That is, ringers versus non-ringers. I attempted to be as logical and scientific as possible, although it’s impossible to remove all subjectivity from the issue. But it’s far better than simply saying “so and so isn’t a ringer, IMO”. In your opinion? If your opinion is purely subjective with no effort at logical or rational thought, then what good is it??
No good at all, actually. The original series sprung from an effort to debunk the old, tired and stupid claim that the only reason Derek does well is because he gets all the good partners and no one else gets them. Utter BS, of course. It would be a good idea to read that series before starting this one as I can’t guarantee that I’ll include all the same rationale this second time around and I don’t take well to discussing a subject with someone who is so rude as to not read the blogs. Hi all!! Decided to start a new post because the other one was getting cluttered and would be hard to read for anyone coming back for the first time in a while. Click to read the old post.
I was watching GMA at the beginning and they teased nothing – which means I have to wait until they go to the first commercial. Boo.
ETA: Vogue here! GMA just said the announcement was soon coming. Will Derek Hough be back, they ask? We will soon find out!!
ETA: I’m back! They just teased it again, not mentioning any single pro, but showing Cheryl and Drew.
ETA: They just showed their play room with all the screens with big question marks and asked “Maks? Derek? Who will be back and what will their role be??”
ETA4: Okay, there are four pros in studio. I’m guessing Cheryl and Mark. Not sure of the other two. And then they show a child photo of Karina – I take it as she’s IN. They showed Maks/Meryl, Derek’s Ameska Macy’s and Cheryl/Drew – clues.
ETA5: Latest tease shows Derek and Jennie Garth and says 8:22 is the time for the reveal. Ask again about Derek and Maks’ role. Asked if they would be going “head to head”. Um, yeah, Derek is super competitive. :::rolls eyes:::
ETA6: Cheryl is in Studio and competing. Tony is in studio. Karina also in studio, along with Val. Switch up is back. Results show the first two weeks. Len gone for part of season. There will be some “guest judges”. COMMERCIAL/Local News Break.
ETA7: Next…Mark Ballas. See below for the rest. Can’t say I’m happy Derek is back. No vacay for Heidi. I was typing as I went and just realized no Sharna. Kinda devastated about that. Also, no Gleb in the pro lineup despite his wife’s tweet. He must be back in the troupe.
The starting positions below are based on the individual pro’s status last season. Troupe is still unknown. Read more..
Mary has sent us some video she took of Ballroom With A Twist in Dallas. This is awesome. Check it out as well as her little review of the show. THANKS MARY! You’re awesome!
Ballroom with a Twist in Dallas was the best show ever! Maks, Karina, Tony, & Cheryl danced like their souls were connected! You could feel the excitement of the audience as they interacted by answering questions & teaching us dance moves, & dancing with some of the audience. American Idol performers Von Smith & Haley Scarnato wooed the audience with their beautiful angelic voices. So you think you can dance performers put on a breathtaking performance with their phenomenal dance moves. I highly recommend seeing this show if you get the chance. I’m so grateful my daughter & I was able to enjoy this memory that will last a lifetime! A Big Dallas Texas Thank You to all the performers!
ETA: Theatre Jones has posted a review of the Dallas show. Check out the beautiful pic of Karina and Maks too when you go to the link.
I love Jessica, but she’s all about the ship at times. Dancing? Not so much. Anyway, she interviews Rob and the other producers at TCA last night and then hit the jackpot when Tom Bergeron showed up to give his thoughts. We can always count on The Berge. From Glamour.com:
Glamour: Where are you in terms of casting for the new season?
Joe Sungkur: At the moment, we’re in our early days, but there’s a lot of people we’re talking to…
Ashley Edens-Shaffer: But obviously we can’t say!
Glamour: When will the new cast be announced?
Ashley: That hasn’t been announced.
Glamour: I know, that’s why I’m asking. [Laughs]
Ashley: We’re not allowed to say yet.
[Ed. Note: Because DWTS premieres a week earlier than usual this year, expect a cast announcement sometime in mid-late August.]
Glamour: Which of the cast members from last season most surprised you?
Joe: That’s an obvious one: Amy Purdy.
Ashley: Yes, Amy Purdy.
Rob: Amy Purdy.
Glamour: In the finale last season, Len Goodman hinted that he may not be returning, but then when I saw him backstage, he said, “Oh, no, I’ll be back!” So, will Len be back, as well as Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli?
Rob: Absolutely. We want all of the judges back.
Glamour: But it’s not a done deal at the moment?
Rob: We’re talking at the moment because we’re in the off-season, but I’m very confident that they’ll be back. As well as the host! Oh hi, Tom Bergeron!
Tom Bergeron: What a surprise!
Glamour: You’ve gone on the record saying that you thought Maks and Meryl had more of a brother/sister relationship. Fans do not like to hear that!
Tom: I’ve been ridiculed on social media for it! I’ve seen some great tweets saying, “That’s not like any family reunion I’ve been to!” But I never saw it as a romantic affection. I saw it as a very real affection, and I thought it brought out a side of Maks that I had seen backstage, but he had never allowed himself to be vulnerable on the air before. I thought that was charming, and it couldn’t have ended better. On a year when you watched a woman who had no legs absolutely mesmerize you, and Derek working with her—he’s like our Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire—but when you have that, and then Maks and Meryl… Wow.
Ok, you’ve made your selections in our first round in the “Battle of the 3rd Place Finishers! Laila Ali & Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas, Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy won! Now it’s time to VOTE and determine who is the final winning couple from the three! VOTE in the new poll below and then let us know who you voted for in comments. Thanks All!!
Wow wow wow is all I can say to a new review of the “Move Live On Tour” from our Own Miss Heidi. If you head to Pure Derek Hough, you can read her bird’s eye account of the entire show from Nashville, Tennessee. She not only reviews the show, she posted some awesome photos and videos. For a sneak peek, check out the video below where Julianne talks of why she and Derek created the “Move Live On Tour”. So humble and gracious as ever….
“Because of you, we are here” ~Julianne Hough
Lots lots more at Pure Derek Hough. Heidi, as always, is full of her wicked humor too. A MUST READ AND SEE!
The summer dance tours are heating up! Derek and Julianne Hough’s MOVE Live On Tour is about to begin. Also, “Ballroom With A Twist” is gearing up for it’s summer run as well. Hosting and performing on stage in one show! This dream has been a year in the making so I’m really looking forward to seeing that chemistry hit the stage. And the icing on the cake is bringing this show and the Big Stars to Hawaii for the first time. I don’t think Waikiki will ever be the same.

For ticket information for how you can attend, see our Ballroom With A Twist schedule which is featured in our “Pure DWTS Features” in the top bar. As most of you know, I saw the show in February and it was a gas!! What a lively night of fun and entertainment!! If you think the pros are fun and awesome to see on TV, wait until you see them up close and personal. It’s a whole different ballgame.
And guess what – Meryl straight up says they’re not dating. :::cue hearts breaking all over shipperland::: Maks even goes so far as to say “they needed that” in reference, I think, to the faux kissing and romance. And I’m not criticizing – that is an element of SOME of the dances. I think it is a shame that it’s now all anyone focuses on. The woman can DANCE, yet all we hear about is the showmance – and that’s largely due to their choices, in addition to the shippers. But the faux kiss as a choreographic crutch got a bit out of hand – the shippers don’t get ALL the blame.
ETA: Vogue here. You can read a new interview with Meryl at TV Guide as well. I love the question they asked her about working with Maks and Derek…
How do you think working with Maks might change how you approach routines with Charlie?
Davis: Just from a basics standpoint, learning the different styles of dance I did can only help. I’ve taken ballet, but I’ve never danced on the floor for the sake of dancing on the floor. I’ll take a lot back on the ice with me.
You talked a lot about coming out of your shell. Will that also change your partnership with Charlie?
Davis: I was very shy when I was younger, but I haven’t been shy for many years now. But this additional experience will definitely help.
What was the major difference you found between working with Maks vs. Derek ?
Davis: They are two very different people with different personalities, but both are insanely brilliant. It’s funny, I worked with the two of them at the same time for the team dance and I had been telling Maks that seeing the two of them interact and suggest choreography to one another was such a cool experience to see.
More at TV Guide.
ETA2: TV Guide now has a new interview up with Maks. Here is a take where he talks on their relationship and more.
You guys have gotten a lot of mileage out of the romance speculation. How much of that was played up for show? Set the record straight.
Chmerkovskiy: Our relationship is very real. She’s incredible. It’s going to go beyond Dancing with the Stars for sure. … As far as what everybody is asking romantically, these things will never be answered by me. You’re going to see things in tabloids and pictures, and you have people gossiping and making up their own stories, but I will never speak about my personal life.
The show really milked it too.
Chmerkovskiy: I think the show never had a couple like Meryl and me. … We had these stories on the floor that gave a completely new depth to our show. Between what we did and what Derek was able to do with Amy, this season has been absolutely remarkable. We had unbelievable dancers. … Nobody, I think, came close to Meryl and me, just by sheer passion. That passion, that togetherness and that look in each other’s eyes — yes, some of it was necessary for the dances to be what they needed to be from a performance standpoint. Most of it was coming from a very real spot. We connected right away and it was extremely creative.
Almost every season without fail, there’s a huge Maks temper tantrum midway. You got frustrated this season, but it never went over-the-top.
Chmerkovskiy: One thing that was amazing this season was I felt a lot of support. This was the first time I was like, “So that’s what it feels like when people are rooting for you.” I didn’t feel any different as far as treatment, like, “You get any production piece you want.” But I felt that people genuinely wanted to see me succeed, and that gave me a lot of confidence. There were tense moments, but that tension wasn’t produced in the form of, “He’s the bad guy” again. It was more, “This stuff is getting to him because it’s so close and so real.”
