Derek Hough’s Last Blog of DWTS Season 18

What an amazingly classy guy. From TV Guide:

I had a gut feeling that Maks and Meryl were going to take it, and I said that to Amy, so we knew. Based on the packages and the tone and the way they put everything together, I had a feeling they were winning. I think everyone did. I’m so happy for them. It was well-deserved. Meryl is a beast and was so consistent all season long. I couldn’t be happier for Maks. I told Maks the night before, “I’m genuinely really happy for you and would love to see you win.” Obviously, I would be happy to see Amy win because of what she represents, but knowing Maks for such a long time and him having been part of the show for so long, truthfully, it was nice to see him experience the show it was meant to be experienced. All season, in a way, was about Maks’ journey, which was wonderful to watch. Being a friend of his and seeing that was great.

I really loved our freestyle. That was such a culmination of Amy’s story this season. When I heard the music we were going to use, it was perfect for what it stood for. It was, “I dare you to love / I dare you to cry / I dare you to run / I dare you to try / I dare you to fall / and lay on the ground / I dare you to feel / I dare you to be here now.”

That’s exactly what this entire season has been about for Amy and me: not being afraid and really going for it. I wanted that last note we hit to be positive and a challenge, and to dare people to try and see what happens. That’s what Amy’s been saying by what she’s been doing on the show. Everybody asks me, “Where do you get all your ideas?” It really comes from the music. Whatever pops into my head when I’m listening to something is how it starts. I just envisioned Amy spinning in the air, ascending and being transcendent of dance. I looked into the rope thing and I asked my friend, “Hey, is this possible?” He was like, “Yeah, it’ll take a couple weeks to teach her that.” And I was like, “Well, we have an hour.” And it’s all back muscles, which was what she was having problems with, so it was wild to see her up there. It was just incredible. And for her to let go and do it with one hand was awesome.

Private Members Area – What Are Shippers and Why Are They A Problem?

We have discussed “shippers” many times on this site and Courtney had talked about doing a post about them. I responded that I would take the “anti-shipper” view.  Considering the two people who are at the top of the leaderboard this season, I figured it was a good time to post it.

What is a shipper? Well, a shipper is someone who is invested in the romantic relationship of two people who are on TV.  More carefully defined, it is a person who wants two characters to get together and/or shows support for two characters already together. This started in the X-Files fandom and was originally limited to fictional programs. Of course, back then there wasn’t “reality” TV like there is now. I was heavily involved in the X-Files fandom and that, I must say, was back when shippers were fun. At first. But I digress.

I have no real problem with the casual observation that two people look hot together. Or the observation that it seems OBVIOUS that they’re knocking boots outside the dance studio. Or even the observation that the babies would be so pretty. Especially when there seems to be some evidence that it is true. I think this is relatively normal behavior. But I also don’t think this is really “shipping” as it is defined nowadays. I think it’s speculation, and usually harmless. I would even go so far as saying, when limited to FICTIONAL characters, it can be fun, in its light hearted, romance novel, fan fiction form.  We’ll talk about slash another time.  I don’t want to make John’s delicate sensibilities catch on fire or anything. :-D But as long as it stays just for fun and an OCCASIONAL past time, no harm no foul.  Read more..

PureDWTS 18, Week 2 Partner Switch Twitter Voting: Is It “Rigged?” Part IV *Partnership Predictions*

Ok kids, the voting is *finally* over – and Heidi & I pulled together data from both Keyhole & Topsy last night to try and get the most accurate picture of who was going to be dancing with who.  Based on what was said in the press release, the partnerships would be determined in order of who got the  most overall votes (with all possible partnership hashtags), and moving down the line until everybody was paired off.  We have a better picture of this for the female celeb/male pro partnerships – if I’m reading Heidi’s Topsy spreadsheet correctly, it looks like Meryl was the greatest overall vote-getter for the gals, followed by NeNe, then Amy, then Danica, then Candace.  We don’t have quite as much data on the male celeb/female pro pair-ups, but if Keyhole is correct, that went in order of Charlie, Cody, James, & Drew.  Based on that information, here are our predictions of who is going to be dancing with who:

UPDATE, 4/1/14 @ 10:02 PM EST: Well apparently all the tweeting you guys did was pointless, and apparently all the tracking and deciphering of vague rules we here at Pure did trying to give you guys some semblance of guidance was of NO WORTH WHATSOEVER…because Kristyn just dropped this bomb:

kristyn

Draw your own conclusions, but I trust Kristyn & her source. So I could basically draw one big ol’ strikethrough every single word I’ve written over the course of the 4 posts I’ve done in this series, and eat the cost (both monetary & labor) of trying to track these hashtags…and worst of all, all that time you guys spent tweeting did nothing.  I could literally cry right now – out of frustration and pure unadulterated RAGE.  We did this to keep TPTB honest – to make sure they didn’t try to manipulate things in their favor.  And what did they do?  They gave all the viewers the middle finger, anyway.  I have half a mind to tweet Sean Avery right now and see if we can formulate some sort of tell-all about the corruption running rampant through DWTS right now – I see that his claims of being booted off DWTS for fighting with Lord Conrad the Supreme are starting to gain some traction.  I hope that man gets a venereal disease, because he is captaining the Titanic right now, with all the self-destructive changes he’s implementing. I hope some of the big outlets jump on this one.  TMZ, you lurkin’? Holler at us – I’d be happy to send you copies of our data.  Dateline? 60 Minutes? Hit us up and we’ll give you the straight dope.  Damn, I don’t think I’ve been this mad about DWTS since they brought out the WTA cha-cha and threw Ralph out on his ass.  Discuss, guys – feel free to vent.  Lord knows I have… Read more..

PureDWTS 18, Week 2 Partner Switch Twitter Voting: Is It “Rigged?” Part III *12 Hours Left to Vote*

So for those of you who had the “2.5 weeks” slot in the “How Far Into This Season Can Maks Last Without Saying Something Douchebaggy?” poll, congrats – you win the satisfaction of knowing that some people never change.  :-) He dropped this gem on Saturday, probably not realizing what a slap in the face it was to every other male pro whose name is not Chmerkovskiy – and really, the use of the word “trust”? What do you think they’re gonna do, Maks? Steal her social security number? What he fails to realize is that Meryl trusted Derek before she ever met either of those Chmercocky brothers – and he’d probably be the one pro that you could count on to make sure Meryl made it through to the next week so that she could be reunited with you, Maks.  But go ahead, please – keep throwing more fuel into the karma cloud already forming above you this season.  :-)

Anywho – I apologize for not dropping an update on you guys as I promised on Friday, but I got so wrapped up in closing out Q1 at work and then packing and heading down to Louisville ComiCon that I just ran out of time.  No joke – I was in my PJ’s in my hotel room on Friday night, ready to sit down and write it up, when my lovely roomies came barging in with Manu Bennett (Slade from the tv series Arrow), Scott Wilson (Herschel from The Walking Dead), and Jon Bernthal (Shane from The Walking Dead) in tow, ready to do some Fireball shots.  Needless to say, I got a bit distracted.  :-P That didn’t last long, though, because Heidi brought a rather disturbing observation to my attention on Saturday: whether TPTB intended it or not, this partner switch voting has been rigged in the Chmerkovskiy brother’s favor the whole time.  Why, you ask? Because they’re counting tweets containing both Val & Valentin, and Maks & Maksim.  While that may not seem like a huge deal, it does when you take into account that you can put both #DWTSMerylVal and #DWTSMerylValentin into a tweet and have it count as two votes, while putting #DWTSMerylDerek into a tweet twice will likely get it marked as spam.  So potentially, every tweet that contains both variations of the Chmerkovskiy brothers’ names counts twice as much as a tweet with Derek’s name.  Wish you all could see the chagrined face I’m making.  I can’t decide whether or not it was done intentionally or whether TPTB are really and truly that stupid…I would say both are equally plausible.  The problem is, we realized this too late, and there’s really no way for us to know just how much the two-name variation is affecting the hashtag tweeting.  Heidi & I have an idea of how to normalize our data a bit, but it ain’t gonna be foolproof.  But we already knew this whole partner switch was a clusterf*ck :-P

With about 12 hours to go in the voting (on the east coast – I think it’s 15 on the west coast), there are some tight races going on and some not-so-tight races going on – I would say that Amy’s partner has pretty much been determined, and Charlie’s as well; Meryl is currently been fought over by fans of two different pros; and the rest of them? Nobody seems to care.  :-P No, really – compared to the volume of tweets I’m seeing for Meryl, it’s as if the fans are going “Meh, whatever…they’ll get who they get!” to the rest of the couplings.  And as I mentioned in the comments of my previous update post – if you’re using the same hashtag multiple times in the same tweet, it’s likely getting marked as spam; therefore, you’re better off doing a whole laundry list of couple switch hashtags in one tweet (i.e. “#DWTSMerylDerek #DWTSAmyMark #DWTSCharlieCheryl #DWTSBillyDeeSharna) than repeating the same one multiple times.  Remember: you’re not only voting FOR your favorite pro to get a certain celeb (or vice-versa); you’ll also want to try and prevent another pro from getting your celeb (and vice-versa) by voting to pair them with someone else.  That’s why I think those doing the multiple different hashtags in 1 tweet method are likely having more of an effect on the voting than those putting all of their eggs in one basket  and only voting for one pairing.

And speaking of putting all their eggs in one basket: I think some fans are running the risk of leaving their pro to get “whatever’s leftover after everyone else has been paired” because they’re throwing all of their energy into one possible pairing which they have a very slim chance of actually getting.  Might not hurt to start tweeting out hashtags for your 2nd & 3rd choices, kids – otherwise, don’t be surprised if a pro that you thought had a lot of clout ends up with NeNe.  :-)

Random interesting fact, courtesy of the awesomeness that is Keyhole: there are fans voting in the partner switch-up from as far away as Slovenia, Madagascar, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Algeria, Nigeria, & Peru.  That’s pretty powerful, guys – when fans that can’t even watch the show live are tweeting to vote in the partner switch, you know it’s kind of a big deal.

Voting ends at 11:59 PM EST (Ithink), kids – so let’s finish strong and push those hashtags hard this afternoon & evening.  I will try to stay up until  midnight and see if I can put out a preliminary “partner-switch predictions” post, but I can’t make any guarantees – needless to say, I’m a bit sleep-deprived after my weekend in Louisville.  For those of you curious about some of my antics – @putuincespence on Instagram.  That’s all I’m gonna say.  :-P

DWTS Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy Interviewed By KTLA (Video)

Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy were interviewed by KTLS about their partnership on Dancing With The Stars. Meryl says Maks is a pleasure to work with, very understanding, and good natured (check out what the reporters do when she says this.). Maks praises Meryl too and says he’s not use to doing dolphin tricks since he’s a whale? lol You’ll understand better when you listen in. From KTLA…

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Hopefully everyone has had enough time to sleep off the whiplash you likely got from watching last night’s show – because seriously, kids, I don’t think I could have choreographed a sh*tshow that was sh*ttier than this show 8-O I felt sorry not only for the couples for a) not knowing when they were going to be dancing, and having to be prepared at a moment’s notice; but b) having the double elimination hanging over their heads all night.  Oh, and then there was the partner switch-up tweeting, too, which was haphazardly thrown in without a whole lot of explanation or clarification.  If the producers set out to turn last night’s show into the television equivalent of K-Mart on Black Friday, they succeeded – it seemed like total bedlam on the set last night.

I guess Erin improved only slightly this week – although I don’t really know if it was that she improved or that I was just waiting to get blindsided by more twists and turns and wasn’t really paying attention to her to begin with.  I do agree with the fans on one thing: she will NEVER look as good in those dresses as Brooke did.  WTF was she wearing last night? A discarded leotard from Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” video? And my god, Erin (or whomever is pushing this stupid Jeremy Miller nonsense), just STAAAAHHHHP.  Both Cameron & Danica have clearly moved on, and let’s just say Ben Seaver hasn’t exactly aged gracefully…if you’re expecting a catfight over that doughy, average-looking washed-up actor, you’re going to be waiting for a very, very long time.

As for the eliminations – can’t say I’m too surprised about Diana & Henry.  I would have liked her to stay a bit longer, but I kind of wondered about both she & Henry’s respective fanbases – I doubt they would have been able to stick around for more than a week or two.  As for Sean & Karina – I’m honestly a bit shocked about that one, because I seriously thought Karina had the fanbase to at least pull her through the first few weeks, and I thought Sean was starting to finally open up.  Apparently he mentioned something about getting into an argument with Conrad & Co. over his rehearsal package last week during his elimination interview on GMA this morning (with the implication being “If you fight with the producers, you get sent home!”), but we’ll probably never know for sure if it was the votes that sent him home or Lord Conrad’s delicate ego.  I’d be lying, though, if I said I wasn’t THRILLED that Billy Dee & Emma get to stick around for another week ;-) Read more..

A Few DWTS18 Week 2 Rehearsal Videos, Gilles Marini Has Advice For Drew Carey

Access Hollywood has posted new rehearsal interviews for Dancing With The Stars Week Two with Drew Carey, Cheryl Burke, Maks Chmerkovskiy, and Meryl Davis. I like how Drew calls this experience “Sweating With The Stars” instead. lol Meryl talks of how it was important for her and Charlie White do the show at the same time. Lots more below.

Also, Gilles Marini has some advice for the contestants especially for Drew Carey at People.com. If Drew knows what’s good, he’ll surrender to Cheryl Burke. Wise advice indeed. lol

After marching two tours in Cuban heels over the parquet – one of which was spent in the Cheryl Burke bootcamp of dance – Gilles Marini is one of the few people on this planet that can offer advice to one of Dancing with the Stars’s newest contestants, Drew Carey.

And basically, what the Switched at Birth actor has to say to The Price Is Right comedian is: Give in, keep your mouth shut and think Disney.

“The only advice I have is, ‘Let it go, brother,'” Marini tells PEOPLE Wednesday while attending the Los Angeles premiere of Sabotage. “It’s like the song from Frozen. [Cheryl] is not someone that you can handle, so you have to surrender and you have to embrace the fact that she will teach you her ways and that is it.”

Apparently, signing on for DWTS is akin to signing up for the French army.

“If you go against it you won’t learn anything, so he has to go and embrace it,” the 2 Broke Girls guest star says. He adds, “Cheryl is tough as nails – [she] was very tough on me and thank God she was, because otherwise I would have absolutely never learned a thing.”

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 1 – Power Rankings

So season 18 – the season of “lots of big changes”, and I’m not so sure I’m liking them.  Right off the bat – skeptical about Erin as a cohost.  Seems like she isn’t about playing 2nd banana to Tom – felt like she was just waiting for her turn to talk, and was trying too hard to be clever and funny when asking her questions…which, by the way, were exactly what I worried they would be: pointed, uncomfortable, and at times, salacious.  Not sure if it’s her asking those questions (or somebody up in the booth feeding them to her), but I’m not liking the gossipy, almost tabloid-y direction the show is taking – suddenly, we have to know who’s dating who, and what their significant others think about their partners, and who stole who’s boyfriend in the past, etc.  Seemed especially evident when Erin was needling-er, interviewing Cody & Witney – didn’t really enjoy the tone of that one in particular, as it sounded to me like Erin was throwing some serious shade in Witney’s direction (“Well, I think you’re a distraction!”).  Just SHUT UP, Erin – I had my fill of you channeling Regina George back in season 10.  Remember: those who stir the sh*t pot should have to lick the spoon. ;-)

And then there’s the “rivalries” – ugh.  The three major ones that they seem to be pushing are Meryl vs. Charlie, Cody vs. James, and Candace vs. Danica.  And while Conrad may have referred to them as “healthy rivalries” in his press release – I would hardly call dredging up 20-year-old drama about stolen boyfriends to be “healthy”.  Are we sure the Muppets in the production office haven’t been replaced by high school girls? Because some of this stuff is seriously immature.  But hey, if they’re gonna continue pushing the rivalries – guess I’ll do a weekly scorecard of them, too, since these things seem to be UBER-IMPORTANT on DWTS these days.  But anyhow…shall I get on with the rankings? :-)

1.) Charlie & Sharna – Can’t say I’m too surprised here, as we had heard that Charlie’s routine was “REALLY good!” and we all kind of expected both he & Meryl to easily handle their routines.  Was pleasantly surprised at how well he handled the (pretty short) section of side-by-side contemporary choreography – he seems to really get the “pulse” of contemporary, and knows how to use his limbs properly.  He’s obviously SPECTACULAR doing lifts, and he handled the many ones Sharna threw at him without so much as a bobble…but that’s probably my one big critique of this routine: it was very, VERY lift-heavy.  Seemed like most of the routine was either prepping for a lift or doing the lift, as opposed to doing any separate steps.  Contemporary does NOT mean “do all sorts of lifts!” I would caution Sharna not to get tempted to throw every lift she knows into any routine in which it’s allowed, simply because her partner is quite possibly even a better lifter than Tony.  Beyond that, I really enjoyed it, and I’m excited to see what else this partnership can do.
