PureDWTS Season 23 Week 9 – Media, Scores, And Interviews After The Show

What a great night of dancing last night. I was “wowed” by all the couples in some way, but, more on that in Courtney’s new Power Ranking post coming up in a bit. Be watching for it as always and get your reviews ready. For now, let’s review the scores…

Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko (Waltz): 10-10-10-10 from the judges for a perfect 40.
Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy (Argentine Tango): 10-10-10-10 from the judges for a perfect 40.
Terra Jole and Sasha Farber (Charleston): 10-10-9-9 from the judges for a total of 38.
Calvin Johnson, Jr. and Lindsay Arnold (Waltz): 9-9-10-9 from the judges for a total 37.
James Hinchcliffe and Jenna Johnson (subbing for the injured Sharna Burgess) (Jazz): 9-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 36.
Marilu Henner and Derek Hough (Samba): 9-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 36.

THE TEAM DANCES:
James & Calvin Team Dance (Paso): 9-9-10-9 from the judges for a total of 37.
Marilu & Terra Team Dance (Jazz): 9-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 36.
Jana & Laurie Team Dance (Contemporary): 10-10-10-10 for a perfect 40.

For Media starters, People has a few recaps and interviews up. Be sure to read what they have here (and they may post more later). Note that Sharna is still unsure if she will be back next week. I hope she takes all the time she needs to heal up. We want this girl dancing for a long time to come (we are with you all the way on this, Sharna!xx).

But with two weeks left in the season, Burgess is still unsure what her future on the ABC reality dance competition will be.

“I want to say 100 percent,” she said of her chances of being back next week. “But I genuinely thought I 100 percent would be back this week, so it’s hard for me to throw that number out there.”

“I just have to take it day by day and continue to make the right decision for my career,” she continued. “But it’s really difficult. I love every single thing about this season with James. It’s my favorite season and I don’t want to miss out on any of it.”

Then there is this from Glamour:

James wants nothing more than to have his leading lady back, but also knows she has to do what’s best for her long-term health. “Every step I’ve ever taken on a dance floor up until week 8 was with this woman. Every thing I’ve ever learned about dance was from this woman. Losing your rock essentially is incredibly difficult. It helps having her there for rehearsal, but it’s not the same. It isn’t. It’s an extra element we’ve had to deal with as a team. Jenna stepped in and has been great, and no doubt helped out a lot, but I want [Sharna] back on the floor as soon as possible. But I understand. I’m really proud of her because she had [the clear] to dance tonight, but she took care of her knee.”

Added Sharna: “I made a mistake 16 years ago to continue dancing when I shouldn’t, and I ended up with an ACL reconstruction. I wasn’t about to make that mistake this season and be out the rest of this season, out for the tour, out for next season. I, as much as every bone in my body wants to dance on that floor with James, I have to play this right. [Still] it sucks being an adult and making grownup decisions!”

Let’s hope and pray Gleb will be ok too and that he’s not over doing it….

Gleb Savchenko went to immediately ice his knee after the show, but Jana stuck around. “Gleb’s in a lot of pain, but he didn’t want me to dance with anybody else, and that means the world to me.” What about Jana’s rib injury, which viewers haven’t heard much about since earlier in the season? “It still hurts, honestly, but it’s one of those things where it gets better every week. Gleb knows now to touch me there.”

With only two weeks left in the competition, what’s next for Jana after the show? “I’m really looking forward to the holidays. It’ll be my first holiday with my baby girl.” On the career front, “the winter time is a slow time in the business, so I’ll be able to…think about what my next steps are. There’s a lot of moving parts right now, so I want to make the best decision for my family.”

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 9 – LIVE BLOG!!

As always…

Site rules in are effect – don’t hit refresh every 2 minutes, make sure you’re not posting one-liners, etc. Thank you. 🙂 And Rosa, if you do your usual posting of multiple comments one right after the other, I’m going to delete you. Don’t do it.

Opening number was a bit of a non-event. :::shrug:::

I love Idina Menzel…but I loved her BEFORE Frozen. And I still love her in spite of it. 🙂

Redemption edit for Marilu – she’s going home. Of course, I wonder how much of this happened LAST week.

That was a pretty damn good Samba from Marilu! I saw one step that might have been a mistake, but it was tiny…and she was having fun

Now we’ll hear a bunch of BS about how she’s finally working with Derek blah blah blah…Wait, Idina! I love you!

And once again, Marilu doesn’t go to Erin and gets her scores right there. I call bullshit. The 9s were fair – don’t really know if that means she’s going home or not, since neither Ryan nor Maureen got good scores when they left.

Great dance from Calvin – very beautiful. And that song makes me weepy every time I hear it. Calvin is definitely a contender. Watch your backs James and Laurie.

Almost forgot my LOL to the Cat Calvin sans dance belt. LOL. Why are we getting the somber tone from Julianne like she doesn’t want to give him props??

Huh…long game is to get rid of Calvin.

Male singer on this bumper just murdered this song and not in a good way. WTF?

Never been a fan of the Wiz. Kinda bummed that James go it.

Think Jenna just screwed up. Is James the Joker or the Wizard? Did James just miss a step as well?

Those mistakes would get Marilu 8s. This should be interesting. I even heard Emma yell on All Access.

I thought I saw more than one issue (and one of them was Jenna’s), but maybe it was just me. snort.

Who’s the woman rubbing all over Derek back stage? Anyone?

Charleston doesn’t have the same impact with Terra, but Sasha is doing surprisingly well making it work for her. Fun dance! Oh god, CAI will call out lip syncing again.

Everybody getting the good scores tonight. Interesting. Hmmm…I don’t know what to think now. Terra and Marilu were the bottom queens.

Pardon the expression. 😉

Oh boo freakin’ hoo. Why are we crying, Jana? For Gleb or yourself?

Sorry, distracted by Derek kindly calling out the producers on All Access…a lot. Nicely. In a Derek way.

Is this dance kinda boring? I can’t focus on it.

Totally over scored. And if you all don’t ease up on hitting refresh and do better at commenting, I might open a vein.

Very good dance by Laurie – but then that’s no surprise is it? Seemed like she was too far away from Val at times and a tiny bit off balance.

Heh…Marilu gets 9s and is still at the bottom of the leader board. Maybe she ain’t going home? Who the hell knows?

Didn’t the men do then Paso moves last time there was a male duet? One that looks really similar to this one? Or were they joking in the package?

I was worried about the capes at first but they got it together. Great dance! I enjoyed it.

Ugh, getting glimpses of Laurie and Jana’s duet and I’m not looking forward to it. It looks like a standard contemporary.

LOL Marilu – naughty girl. 😉

Okay, that was the old style vaudeville show stopper! I loved it except for the part with Marilu’s legs and Terra’s body. But it was fun and funny and lot of crazy stuff in it. It was…happy. I can use happy on this election eve. When the world could end.

Give Terra and Marilu 9’s and they still end up way on the bottom…but with James. I guess Laurie and Jana need that save, eh?

Contemporary is so not special any more. That was chock full of cliche moves that Val got off the internet. Hands over mouths, the whole nine yards. I feel like I’ve seen the same contemporary dance about 20 times now.

It comes down to Jana and Marilu and they really got my hopes up. It’s okay if Marilu goes, she had a good run even with the bullshit packages. I’m much more pissed that they guaranteed Jana a spot in the finale AND made sure her fans voted hard by putting her in jeopardy. Hope Rob Wade is happy now – and I hope he’s seen the backside of Derek Hough. Derek certainly doesn’t need the work. Unlike some.

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 8 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, another week, another clusterf*^k.  The most disheartening thing about all the manipulation and games is how easily some of you just buy it hook, line and sinker. After all these years of us telling you not to just blindly believe the packages, you still just believe. You will read in to moments in time exactly what they want you to read in.  Did it happen? Sure…but with the context removed its meaningless – and less than half the story. I think this blind belief in anything on TV is how Donald Trump is actually in the running to be president.    Marilu told me they had their best week ever….Derek’s blog confirmed that…yet what we saw on TV was the opposite, and some cleverly manipulated moments in time. I’m getting to where I actually hate watching this show.

The thing that confuses me is…is it even necessary to do this stuff? Marilu has troubles during the live show – they can reasonably score her lower than some of the other couples because of that. So, WHY are they working so hard to make their packages bad? I have to think that up until last week she was getting the votes, perhaps a lot of votes. She doesn’t look it, but she’s 64 years old and her dancing doesn’t suck at all. She has mistakes – and I would lay money on it that the live show issue is a result of extreme nitpicking from early on – but damn, she looks amazing.  How is that the look of 64?? The main demo that watches this show IS the 65 year old crowd. I would bet they WERE voting for her. But are they still?? Everyone is clearly susceptible to the packages. The producers may have finally succeeded. Read more..

Derek Hough’s DWTS Blog: “I Was Pretty Disappointed in Our Package This Week”

This is where I say “I told you so” to all the negative Nancys, the whiners and the concern trolls out there regarding Derek and Marilu’s packages and relationship. Will you actually believe Derek Hough when he tells you something, or are we going to continue to just believe everything we see on TV, eh?  From TV Guide – click the link to read the whole thing:

In all of my years on Dancing with the Stars, I’ve never been involved in a scandal or anything overly dramatic. I can now say that’s no longer the case — ladies and gentlemen, we have “push-gate”! In all seriousness, I was pretty disappointed with our package. Marilu and I actually sat down last week and had a heart-to-heart about what actually happened during our team dance, how we both felt about it and how we felt about each other. Unfortunately, none of that was used in our package this week so I feel like the audience was short-changed a little bit and instead was fed footage that looked tense and uncomfortable.

For instance, Marilu’s foot injury was glossed over the past two weeks. When she asked for more rehearsal time in Monday’s package and I said we didn’t need it, it came off like I was dismissing her and didn’t care, which is far from it. That quote was taken out of context; I was reassuring her that we had already put in a lot of hours, so she shouldn’t worry. Plus, with her injured feet, I didn’t want to push her and hurt her even more. But since her injury was virtually ignored on the show, most people wouldn’t have known about it. I’m definitely not saying her injury should be an “excuse” — just that context is important.

Needless to say, #TeamHenergy is moving forward and on a positive path, despite those few minutes that you saw on television. Last week there was a lot of uplifting energy and we connected on a really beautiful level. We had a lot of long, deep and wonderful conversations. We kept saying we’re the underdogs and we’re coming back and we’re gonna get her feet and ribs better. In earlier weeks, there was much more struggle in certain ways, but the past two weeks have been extremely cohesive and very positive. I feel like we’ve really bonded.

Pure Derek Hough’s Exclusive Interview with Marilu Henner: Derek, DWTS and That Memory

Hey all!  Remember when some of you submitted questions for me to ask Marilu? Well, we finally finished the interview!!  Every single question didn’t get addressed because we were short on time and a few of them were similar to each other, but we got to most of them.  Many, MANY thanks to Marilu for taking the time to talk to me and answer all your questions. She was fun and funny and very engaging.

Note: This interview was conducted over the course of three conversations starting about two (?) weeks ago – just in case there are any timing issues in here.  I’ve put a brief excerpt here – the rest of the interview can be read at www.purederekhough.com.

Olivia: Marilu, I understand that Dancing with the Stars can be very tiring for a lot of people, out of you and Derek, who takes more naps or is caught yawning in rehearsal? Go Team Hennergy!

Marilu: People make jokes about us because we barely take bathroom breaks, we have so much energy together. We often see other couples who take short meal breaks and ask if we’re going to leave as well and we usually say “we just have to get one more thing…”   I’ve never seen him yawn and I never yawn. When we work, we work. Read more..

Maks Chmerkovksiy Gives Advise For Remaining Couples On Dancing With The Stars, Makes Finals Prediction

Maks Chmerkovksiy has written some thoughts and advise for each of the remaining couples at his new blog at Entertainment Weekly. I’m agreeing with everything he’s written except the part on Derek and how he’s not supportive and making an effort with choreo, etc, for Marilu, but, I do agree that she doesn’t seem comfortable and she just needs to have fun. More below including Miss Heidi’s thoughts. Let us know what you think too. Maks also makes a Prediction on who will make the Finals: Laurie, Calvin, and James.

Marilu and Derek:

I think this is the first time we’ve seen Derek in a role he’s not used to. It’s the role of not being the best couple in the competition, nor having a partner who can do things the way he wants her to.

We always see similarities from season to season — all of us pros recycle stuff. Having several years of DWTS experience, we know there are weeks that are easier than others. We know a set of steps that we can put in that will impress, we know a set of lifts that we can put in that will impress, we know some choreography pieces that we can do over and over. I’m not saying this in a bad way at all — it’s just the way it is.

But I think maybe Derek is attempting this and it’s not working. Marilu is a different person than other people he’s worked with. I don’t doubt that he puts an effort into choreography and stylizing the dance and trying to make her look her best. But when he hits a wall and sees that she’s not responding the way he wants her to, I think he just gives up and moves on. She needs something that needs to be styled for her, so Derek’s signature fast footwork doesn’t really work. She needs to be a little bit smoother, and maybe slower action, or different song styles.

To me Marilu seems like she wants this the most — she genuinely loves the show and loves to do this, but it seems like she has zero fun. The look in her eyes as soon as she messed up just seems like she’s not comfortable in the situation. And Derek just doesn’t seem supportive enough. You can get frustrated (believe me, I know this) but then you have to come back and figure it out, work together, and try something else. You change your approach, and sometimes change your own personal style for the benefit of your partner.

Like I said I’m not innocent; I’ve obviously had issues and been frustrated with a partner in this competition, so I get it. But I feel like I’ve come back and adjusted my approach and made the best of a situation. Not everyone comes into the competition being great, but it’s a matter of adjusting to have the best outcome, and more than anything, being professional.

More at Entertainment Weekly.

Heidi: Maks has thought that Derek always had great partners for YEARS. To claim that this is the first time that Derek hasn’t had the best dancer is moronic at best – me thinks Maks still has a hard on for Derek and his only explanation for those six trophies is that “Derek always gets great partners”. Jealous much? Not only has Maks’ read on the show always been WAY off base (and not just about Derek, but in general), but he’s never understood the show and how it works. That much is obvious from his own lack of trophies except that one that was manufactured for him. And that he’s giving advice to DEREK of all people is beyond laughable. Derek is the one who changes tack with all his partners until he finds what works – Maks is the one who is rigid and unbending (that he thinks otherwise is delusional). The proof is in the pudding, dude. But most of all – that he doesn’t acknowledge that the packages don’t tell the whole story – something he’s complained about in the past – is just idiotic. But then…our sources have said that many of HIS packages were accurate because there was nothing good to show. So maybe he’s projecting. 😉

PureDWTS Season 23, Week 9 – Who’s Dancing What…And When?

This week, my understanding is that there will be an individual dance and a duet of a Broadway show number – Or both dances are broadway show number, sort of? This info is from Just Jared, but for whatever reason I thought the actual show stopper was the duet and these music selections make me think otherwise. Oh well.

Anyway, very convenient that Jana and Laurie get contemporary while James/Calvin have Paso. Good for Marilu and Terra as well but both are going to be so underscored regardless of what they do that it won’t matter.

ETA: Dance order for round one courtesy George Pennachio – and lookie, Laurie is right back were she’s spent a good chunk of her time. 😉
