Peta Murgatroyd was a guest on KTLA today to talk all about Dancing With The Stars and her partner Brant Daugherty. She says some of his strengths are his flow of movement and posture. She and Brant have turned out to be good friends and they have great communication. They also go over Peta and Brant’s Tango last night. Peta says right before coming out on stage, she told Brant they needed to attack the dance and to have fierce eyes…..and that they did. More in detail below…. Read more..
Tonight’s episode of Sesame Street was brought to you by the words “bullsh*t” and “inconsistency”. By the time they lined the couples up for elimination with a mere 5 minutes remaining in the show, my blood was boiling – Len was an absolute terror tonight, the other two stooges were more or less his accomplices when it came to completely contradicting things that they have said in previous weeks (or even earlier in the evening). Seems kinda obvious that they’ve been told they need to shield certain couples from excessive criticism, while piling it on others like it’s going out of style. Len in particular has lost all credibility for me this season – he’s not the “strictly ballroom” judge he once was; now he seems to have a personal agenda, and that dictates his scores & critiques far more than any actual ballroom knowledge. Can we ship him back overseas next week and bring in a guest judge? Pretty please?
As I had kinda guessed, the switch-up dance challenge was a complete turd of an idea – and I think it was quite possibly the most ridiculous-looking thing we’ve seen them make these poor celebs do in 17 seasons. My best guess is that, immediately following the aftermath of last week’s production Muppet voting snafu, they knew they were gonna have to forego this week’s elimination, but needed something trivial to fill time…enter this nonsense. God I hope this one gets permanently scrapped, cause I felt seriously embarassed for some of the couples out there…except for Bill & Emma, who seemed hip to the fact that this challenge was complete bullsh*t and just decided to have fun with it Thrilled that nobody got eliminated – I was seriously scared for Bill by the end of the show. But likely thanks to the Muppets, we get him for another week
1.) Amber & Derek – I’m convinced now that there is nothing Derek can do this season to please Len – “there’s not enough content”. “There’s too much content & it’s repetitive.” The guy is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t – and he seems to be the only one that Len picks apart for these reasons, and the only one that gets legitimately punished as opposed to just getting a warning (looking at YOU, Tony). And the worst part: Amber just seems to be collateral damage to Len. I actually thought this routine was a good example of samba – had a lot of textbook steps, it traveled around the room, and Derek took out a lot of the “frippery” that Len has been complaining about this season…and Amber handled it well! But Len has the nerve to whine about it being “repetitive”. Ok Len, I’ll take the bait: maybe it was repetitive because THERE’S A FUCKING SYLLABUS OF STEPS THAT YOU CONSTANTLY HARP ON, and samba in particular is rather limited in the sequence of steps you can use to get around the room. And dammit, every single routine is going to be repetitive to some degree – if you want a dance to look like it should, you’ve gotta use a lot of basic, characeristic steps. Bill & Emma’s tango? Yep, repetition. Brant & Peta’s tango? Repetitive. Jack & Cheryl’s paso? Repetitive. Nicole & Sasha’s foxtrot? Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. And yet none of those other couples got scolded for it…hmmmm. I guess my only explanation is that Amber is getting the votes she needs to stick around, so TPTB don’t feel the need to “shield” her from elimination like they do other couples – and maybe, to give the impression of this being a close race, Len feels the need to knock this couple down a few notches.
2.) Elizabeth & Val – Lizzy, Lizzy, Lizzy…I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually starting to feel a bit sorry for her. This woman just seems like she’s DESPERATE to do well, and might emotionally shatter at any given moment. By extension, I think I might actually be feeling a bit bad for Val, too, just because I’m not sure that he really knows how to handle it when Liz has a meltdown like she did during her rehearsal footage. But anyway – I thought her cha-cha was actually pretty good, but I don’t think it was 30-worthy – as I said to someone on Twitter, I MIGHT have given it one “10″ as a courtesy, and then maybe two 9′s. I will commend Val on the fact that he must really drill proper turn technique into his partners, because Elizabeth, like Zendaya & Kelly, seems to know how to properly spot her turns, and the result is pretty nice to look at. Can’t say I was wild about Liz’ solo at the beginning, but I guess I understand why Val put it there – it utilizes her ballet & jazz training. My only other complaint: like a lot of other routines we’ve seen from Val, it just seemed a little bit “stop-and-go”, which interrupted the overall flow of it. But overall, I enjoyed it, and Liz seemed to handle it well. The fact that it was given a perfect score, however, makes me wonder if the judges are attempting to shield Lizzy from a Christina Milian-esque ouster – and I wonder if they’ve decided that she MUST be in the finale. I get that they want to have a strong finale of good dancers, but I think anymore, it’s not just about the dancing anymore…you’ve gotta connect with the audience and really entertain them, and that’s one area where I think Liz & Val could take a page out of Bill & Emma’s book. Liz & Val seem to be more inwardly-focused and taking the competition more seriously; I think Bill & Emma, while still wanting to do well, seem more focused on putting on a good show and really making things enjoyable for viewers. If Liz could do both, I could see her being more of a contender. Read more..
So far, there hasn’t been many interviews released after the show (yet?). Though for starters, we did find this George Pennacchio ABC7 recap with a few new interviews in it. You can watch it at ABC7. Below is also some interview quotes….
When it came to the dancing, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, scored the season’s first triple 10s for a Cha Cha that head judge Len Goodman called “hip-notic.”
“Oh my gosh, I couldn’t believe I was seeing it when those paddles went around. It was very exciting, very exciting,” said Berkley Lauren.
They got the only perfect score of the night but ended the evening tied for first place because of the “switch-up challenge.”
The eight teams were divided into two groups to dance for extra points without knowing what songs would be playing. The challenge lifted Amber Riley and Derek Hough from second place to tying for first.
“I was just like, I’m going to have fun and try to make it look like I know what I’m doing and stay committed. And that’s what I did because I definitely had no idea what I was doing,” said Riley.
Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd ended the evening in third place, followed by a fox-trotting Nicole Polizzi and Sasha Farber.
“I’m not a ballroom dancer, and the fact that they’re saying my lines are pretty and, you know, I’m somewhat pulling this off, it means a lot to me,” said Polizzi.
Here’s Henry of PopTVDotCom interviewing some of the cast out partying after the show. It’s Henry’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HENRY!)! He also interviews the couples arriving to and leaving late night rehearsals….
Stay tuned! We hope to have more shortly!
ETA: Below is Donald Driver and Melissa Rycroft weighing on last night’s dancing on Good Morning America. Both think there will be a double elimination coming up….
ETA2: Afterbuzz TV was able to get some interviews in after the show. They also find out some of the new dances for next week…. Read more..
That opening pro dance is pretty good – Lacey had been really good at that since she stopped competing as a pro. I refuse to give Benji (shudder) any credit.
Man oh man, Bill got hosed on the song for a Tango. One of the worst hosings I’ve seen. And Bill gets a 23. Remember what I said about Bill getting a 23? PRAY that I’m wrong about a few other scores, is all I can say. And hope Leah gets 21 or less. Not counting the Switcheroo challenge crapola, that is.
ETA: Any mention of the votes from last week is conspicuously absent. So far. Hmmmmm….
ETA2: Uh oh. Two dances in and I’m only off by one point. Yikes.
ETA3: How many times has Leah removed clothing in this season??
ETA4: OMG, are F*&king kidding me?? They are trying to send Bill home, from the looks of it giving Leah a 27?? Len says he’s been lenient?? Crack is WACK!! He gives Leah not only a pass but a 9. This is outrageous. That dance was a 24 at best, it was so sloppy. Bet Len is not so lenient on Amber, regardless of what she dances.
ETA5: Okay, for those of you not watching, I was right that they do the dance in two groups of four couples. They just picked numbers and it’s Corbin, Nicole, Bill and Jack in one group and then Amber, Liz, Leah and Brant in the second group. If you win, you get 4 points and it goes down from there. That minimizes the damage from the marathon quite a bit, but with the scores they’ve already handed out? Shit.
As I suspected when I saw the clock and how little time there was left, they called it all the way down to Jack and Bill, called Jack safe and then told Bill and everyone that no one was going home. They threw out all the votes this week and no one goes home. But the judges scores from this week will be added in to next week.
NO, this does not change my utter disgust regarding Len Goodman.
Hey, I totally forgot to account for the Switcheroo Challenge crapola in my last post. It will be rather difficult to account for it in this follow up, since we aren’t really sure how it’s going to work. Here’s what we know about it:
- There appears to be two groups, one group comprised of Bill, Liz, Corbin and Jack. Everyone else is in the other group.
- It is a switched up marathon with 2 rounds.
- The music will change at least once during the marathon, presumably the style will change as well. I hear three possible styles, but that could just be chatter.
- You get scored according to how long you last.
- You don’t know the music or style you will be dancing too, although I presume they were given a list of potential styles.
Despite knowing all those things, we don’t really know how it’s going to work. I’m going to GUESS that it will be TWO marathons – first one group will do it and then the other group will do it. They will score each group like they do the standard marathons, that is the longer you stay, the more points you get. So, if it’s four couples, you can get a 7, 8, 9 or a 10. Why the groups?? Perhaps it’s easier to judge…perhaps it’s easier to stage…perhaps they have TWO people they need to give the extra points to. But as we know, more points handed out is not necessarily a good thing. The Switch Up Dance Challenge – Between the picture below and the press release posted by Vogue which says it’s a marathon in “two rounds” – that could mean one of two things: that the first group of four does a marathon where the music/style changes in the middle, and whoever lasts the longest gets a 10 and it goes down from there. Then the second group does the same thing. OR, it could be that the four pairs dance as a team against the other team and the music changes once (hence the second round). But that latter option makes no sense. But the picture of them rehearsing together makes no sense either. So, I give up. I think it will be stupid either way.
The text with the picture tweeted by @DancingABC: “Monday, the couples will dance in two groups of four, to all different types of music in our Switch-Up Challenge!”
Sorry for the delay this week, kids. Extremely busy at work to the point where it will be lucky if I move this weekend. Lots to talk about, so let’s get on with it…
The week of the not-so-shocking elimination. As I’ve said a few times, Courtney and I have been calling this elimination since nearly the start of the show. At first we said it would be either Elizabeth or Christina and then in the last week or three we’ve been thinking Christina, for a variety of reasons. My thinking was that they were both good dancers that weren’t connecting as much with the audience. In addition, they’re of a similar type: good body, good to really good dancer, pretty, not too old but not incredibly young, average to smallish fanbase. The show can only support ONE of this type and I think we’ve seen that in the past.
- Kristin and Chynna in Season 13, eliminated 3rd and 4th
- Audrina and Brandy in Season 11, eliminated 6th and 9th
- Sabrina and Mel B in Season 5, eliminated 6th and 11th
Of course there are other early eliminations where there isn’t a corresponding person who goes a bit farther, but we’re in another season where there are two women who fall into a similar category. If you look at everyone else on the show, they all fall into their own niche…although it could be argued that Brant and Corbin are in a group together, but this doesn’t seem to occur with men and all the shocking eliminations that most people remember are female.
Now the question is – is Elizabeth another Chynna, or another Brandy or Mel B?? It all depends on how freaked the judges are by losing Christina and they’ve already massively overscored people. I mean, look at the scores this week in the table below – they’ve gone mad. It was week 5 most people had a 26 or higher? Are they insane?? Or are they trying to send Leah home and failed to protect Christina well enough?? Read more..
Well, the Las Vegas Odds going into Week 6 of Dancing With The Stars Season 17 aren’t looking too different than last week. What’s disappointing though is that even after a great dance this past week, they continue to put Bill Engvall in last place with 100/1 odds, and yet, Leah is tied with Brant at 18/1 odds. Wha?? Below is more from Sports Bovada!!
Corbin Bleu 3/2
Amber Riley 7/2
Elizabeth Berkley 7/2
Jack Osbourne 14/1
Brant Daugherty 18/1
Leah Remini 18/1
Bill Engvall 100/1
Below are last week’s odds:
Corbin Bleu 3/2
Amber Riley 7/2
Elizabeth Berkley 7/2
Christina Milan 8/1
Jack Osbourne 14/1
Brant Daugherty 18/1
Leah Remini 18/1
Bill Engvall 100/1
My thoughts: Even though this is an overall forecast, I just hope this isn’t an indication of how things will play out next week? Bill has won over so many of our hearts from the beginning and he’s turned out to be a better dancer than many of us thought. I hope it’s Leah to go home next and that’s all I will say without sounding like I am on repeat. Oh yeah, and one more thing…. I think Elizabeth’s odds should be more in the 14/1 range.
Ok, let’s see what Heidi and Court think. Be sure to tell us what you think in comments as well.
Heidi: Well, it’s hard to say. When Christina was still in the competition, I said either she or Elizabeth were going to be the “shocking” elimination. Christina is now gone and it’s possible that Elizabeth could last longer because of that. Really hard to say. I think the top 2 are correct. After that? Well, I don’t think Bill is going home this week unless the seriously hose him on the scores. Leah, on the other hand, is clearly getting votes, because she beat a huge deficit and Christina went home instead of her. How huge? Numbers post is coming later. I had late nights at work and didn’t feel like writing it until last night. Liz has been in jeopardy a couple times. Brant’s been in jeopardy at least once. These things are often predictive. I’m torn. It could really be between Bill, Leah, Brant and Snookie – who are the bottom four in ratings. So, I guess I agree with bottom four, but I’m not sure about the order.
Courtney: Not a whole lot to add that Heidi hasn’t already said – but I do worry that Snooki could be in some danger this week, due to the fact that it’s sounding like the east coast phone votes might get tossed as a result of Muppet idiocy. And while Leah may have gotten the votes to overcome Christina, I feel like some viewers might have jumped off the Leah bandwagon after her behavior this week – she seemed to rub a LOT of people the wrong way. Still think Bill has at least another week in him, but worry that the judges may start whittling out who they deem “the weaker dancers”, and may decide to hose him, Andy-style
Awww, I’m loving Peta Murgatroyd’s black dress. Last night, she and Dancing With The Stars Brant Daugherty graced the Red Capet at the 9th Annual GLSEN Respect Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. You can view more fun photos of them at Zimbio Pictures. Getty Images has a slew of pictures as well.
You can also watch On The Red Carpet interviewing Brant at a recent “Pretty Little Liars” Halloween event below too….
Last night, Val Chmerkovskiy held a launch party for his new clothing line called “Valentin”. Some of the cast of Dancing With The Stars showed up to support Val such as Elizabeth Berkley, Peta Murgatroyd, Sharna Burgess, Leah Remini, Jack Osbourne, Tony Dovolani, Maks Chmerkovskiy, Gleb Savchenko, Henry Byalikov, Tristan MacManus, and Derek Hough. Former troupe member Nicole Volynets was there as well as Sharna’s boyfriend and dancer Paul Kirkland. Gleb’s wife Elena Samodanova was also there (let us know if we missed anyone?). You can view some fun photos of them all at Getty Images and Wire Images. You can view the new clothing collection at this link. Below is a cool video promo. What do you think of the collection? I like all the hoodies, but, not the really short pants.
ETA: If you go to Extra at this link, you can read and watch a new interview with Maks at this event. He admits he’s dating Kate Upton.
Below is a promo instagram…
