PureDWTS Season 24 Court Rants: I Don’t Care How “Rabid” Your Fanbase Is, You Won’t Win Without the General Audience Vote!

For the regulars, you probably have witnessed what prompted this rant 😛 For the non-regulars, bear with me: it seems like every season, there is at least one fanbase that just bugs the ever-loving sh*t out of me – and it’s usually because said fanbase decides to obnoxiously remind the entire online DWTS fandom how awesome their favorite is, and how they’re going to win, and how they’re sooooo much better than other contestants, and how much harder they’re gonna vote than all the other fans, how rabid & supportive the fanbase is, etc.  Basically – if they can think of something to boast about, they will.  Loudly, frequently, and obnoxiously…and the rest of the fans just have to grit their teeth and bear it until the season ends or that particular contestant gets eliminated.

But here’s the funny part: for all the boasting these fanbases do, very seldom do their contestants actually win DWTS.  Why? To quote one of my Twitter followers, “If you have to tell us how big it is…it’s probably not that big.” 😉 But seriously, though – there’s a bit more to it than that.  You have to take viewing demographics into account, and whether or not that fanbase aligns well with the main viewing demographic; you also have to consider if there’s another contestant on a particular season who perhaps aligns better with the main viewing demographic.  The bottom line is this:

You cannot win DWTS if you don’t have the main viewing demographic of the show on your side.

And right now, I can hear the defiant protests of hoards of Harmonizers 😛 Go ahead – you guys can tell us all till you’re blue in the face how “rabid” you are, how “organized” you are, how “passionate & committed” you are.  It comes across as a tad insecure, but go ahead.  But I’m gonna warn you right now, unless Normani can get demographics on her side (or the show tries to pull off a pimping of never-before-seen proportions), I can almost guarantee she will not win. Let me explain why, using historical data from the show…

Ralph Macchio And Karina Smirnoff’s “Across Grace Alley” Available To Buy And Download, Note To Fans

If you haven’t seen Ralph Macchio And Karina Smirnoff’s short film “Across Grace Alley”, you can now buy and download at it’s official site. If you see it (or have seen it), let us know what you think of it in comments. Some of the words used to describe it so far in reviews are: ‘beautiful’, ‘touching’, ’emotional’, and ‘lovely’ (sounds like Karina herself).

Also, Karina has written a note to her fans at facebook about her elimination with Randy Couture and how thankful she is to have met him and her other partners on Dancing With The Stars. She also wrote about “Across Grace Alley” and it’s release. Below is more. This tears me up. We love you, Karina!

Thank you all so much for your love and support this season. Although it was short lived, I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet a friend for life in Randy “The Natural” Couture and dance for all of you. I’ve always said that the most wonderful part of this show is the incredible fans/supporters who I get to interact with and share the journey with as well as the bonds I’ve been blessed to make. It is incredible that a film like Across Grace Alley was birthed out of the relationship Ralph Macchio and I formed while on #DWTS. Not to mention the other amazing people who worked tirelessly to make this film happen like my manager who raised the capital and helped develop my character to many of Ralph’s longtime “industry” friends who brought this story beautifully to life on screen. It is incredible all of this started with us meeting on Dancing with the Stars. I’ve also remained close to the majority of my previous partners and cheer them on and support them. People like Jacoby Jones, JR Martinez and Corbin Bleu have become my extended family. I say all of this to say how truly grateful I am to have had these experiences, to have met these inspiring people – including many of you and to be reminded that life is short. We are never guaranteed tomorrow but we have right now. The road is not easy but my hope is we can all look back on the journey and be thankful for it. Without the adversity and disappointment or the successes and times of triumph; we wouldn’t truly appreciate what we have accomplished and more important who we were blessed to meet along the way. I am humbled by your love, support and encouragement and hope you all know that whatever I do, wherever I am led, you all are a part of me and my motivation. I pray that today we can all follow our hearts, believe that the future is bright and push forward being present and thankful despite the unknown. Love you all! Excited that you can all now see Across Grace Alley by downloading it at www.acrossgracealley.com Xo K

Dancing with the Stars Season 19 – “What do you mean I’m a ringer??” Update

Introduction

A couple of seasons ago, I created a set of criteria with which to measure the benefits some dancers on DWTS have compared to the other dancers. That is, ringers versus non-ringers. I attempted to be as logical and scientific as possible, although it’s impossible to remove all subjectivity from the issue. But it’s far better than simply saying “so and so isn’t a ringer, IMO”. In your opinion? If your opinion is purely subjective with no effort at logical or rational thought, then what good is it??

No good at all, actually. The original series sprung from an effort to debunk the old, tired and stupid claim that the only reason Derek does well is because he gets all the good partners and no one else gets them. Utter BS, of course. It would be a good idea to read that series before starting this one as I can’t guarantee that I’ll include all the same rationale this second time around and I don’t take well to discussing a subject with someone who is so rude as to not read the blogs. I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing With The Stars Karina Smirnoff is really working the 29th Santa Barbara International Film Festival this week and this time for the Cinema Vanguard to Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Isn’t this dress stunning like her others? I still think I’m liking the first white dress she wore the most. What do you think? You can see more fun photos of Karina at Zimbio Pictures. Also, don’t miss Karina being interviewed by Access Hollywood below from Wednesday night’s festivities. She talks of how she is grateful for Dancing With The Stars and how she is coming back. She also mentions that they start in 2 – 2 1/2 weeks. Exciting!

PureDWTS Season 17 Rant: Really, Really Dumb Ideas About the Show (Courtesy of Facebook & Instagram)

After Elizabeth & Val’s elimination last Monday night, against my better judgement, I decided to see what fans on the DWTS Instagram page were saying about the results.  Of course I instantly regretted this decision, because I saw more than a few hystrionic, irrational, and downright idiotic complaints about everything from the scoring to the voting to the overall format of the show.  I also witnessed a horrifying lack of command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall coherence when conversing in the English language 😯 And here’s what really grinds my gears: nothing has changed, guys.  The show’s scoring has been calculated the same way for 17 seasons now (50% judges’ scores, 50% viewer votes), we’ve had the same 3 judges for every season, and this is FAR from being the only voting shakeup we’ve seen in 17 seasons.  So why is everyone suddenly up in arms about it now?

We may never know for sure, but I can say this: some of the Instagram & Facebook DWTS fans have got some really, REALLY dumb ideas about the show – ideas that I’m proud to say that our Pure readers would recognize as pure poppycock in a heartbeat 😉 So of course, I just had to find a way to show you guys some of these gems – both for humor purposes and educational purposes.  All of these are actual comments, either on the DWTS Facebook page or the Instagram page, and all were posted publicly – so I’m within my rights to republish them here; but because some of these ideas are some real turds, I’ve taken pity on the commentor & blurred out any identifying details, except for the first name – cause it’s a helluva lot easier to refer to them by some name than by “idiot #1, idiot #2, idiot #3, etc”.  😉

Really Stupid Idea #1: The judges’ scores should have more weight.

dwtsdumbidea1

No offense, mimi, but where have you been the past 16 seasons???

I shouldn’t even have to elaborate on why this is a downright TERRIBLE idea, but I’m going to anyway because clearly some of the simple-minded folk that are backing this turd of notion don’t seem to understand that this is likely not going to have the effect they think it will. I’m guessing they assume that judges’ scores being weighted more heavily = good dancers stay, bad dancers go.  But apparently they don’t realize that the judges aren’t exactly infallible & objective – far from it, as we’ve witnessed over 17 seasons. The judges are capable of some pretty blatant favoritism towards some contestants (William Levy, anyone?) and have undeservingly HOSED other contestants (Ralph Macchio fans, this is where you nod in agreement).  They also have a tendency to “pity score” some contestants to soften the blow (*cough*BRISTOLPALIN*cough*), with the unexpected effect of said contestants outstaying their welcome.  And then there’s their personal biases: Carrie Ann & Bruno are both easily swayed by attractive young men (regardless of how well they can actually dance), while Carrie Ann seems to turn into a green-eyed monster when it comes to scoring attractive young women, and tends to take some cheap shots when critiquing them. Len has a tendency to scold Derek at least once a season, and hand out an absurdly low score as a result.  And of course, Carrie Ann’s dubious lift-policing seems to have an effect as well…just ask Corbin & Karina, who earlier this season were penalized for a lift that didn’t even exist. We’ve also talked about the “man behind the curtain” possibly exerting some influence over the judging as well – seemed awfully convenient that William Levy was getting worshipped by the judges week after week (whether or not he was actually worthy of the worship), when he was set to launch a huge deal for Univision (which is part of the ABC family…hmmmm). People REALLY want to give these clowns even MORE power? I feel like just last year, people were complaining about how the judges were terrible and needed to be replaced!!! Another point to consider: the viewers need to feel invested in this show – they need to feel like they have a say in who stays and who goes.  And the minute you start making them feel like their vote doesn’t count or counts less is the minute you start losing viewers.  Even those that don’t always vote seem to take comfort in the fact that the viewers do have the power to overturn a bad score from the judges. Karina Smirnoff and Ralph Macchio Interviewed About “Across Grace Alley’, DWTS, And More

Broadway World has a new interview posted with dance pro Karina Smirnoff and former Dancing With The Stars partner Ralph Macchio. They talk with them about their partnership on Dancing With The Stars and their new film together, “Across Grace Alley, which will soon be premiering on the East coast at the HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL from October 10th – 14th! Here is fan take of how they started working on the film together. Lots more at the link. Check out this new website for the film too. It’s fun!

So at what point did you start talking about working together on the film. Was it during that season, or afterwards?

RM: It was afterwards. We felt, and I think this is probably the case for a lot of people on that show, there is certainly a void when it’s over. I think you either wind up being friends forever or never wanting to talk to the person ever again. In our case, I felt the creativity that we had, the ability that we had to tell stories through dance and also through the weekly packages on the show – I miss that and I felt that Karina and I had more stories to tell.

And I think we both felt that and we both miss that creative process. And the getting to know her behind the camera and personally as the friendship grew over the course of the season, I became more and more fascinated with how intriguing a person she was and how much I felt this sort of real, human, understated, grounded side to her that was not sort of focused on the celebrity of Dancing with the Stars- and the glitz and glamour part of it. I saw the human side, the girl beneath the woman, was something I thought would be a fascinating character and so a lot of her character in our film came about in just conversations and our relationship and some discussions we had over that time from a human level.

So that’s where the concept of placing Karina in that sort of place and unveiling that side of her began and our creative collaboration in my world of filmmaking, as opposed to her world of ‘5, 6, 7, 8 go!’

And Karina, this is your film debut. Can you tell us a little bit about your role and is this a career you’d like to pursue further?

Absolutely. It was an incredible experience. You know on Dancing with the Stars we get to create and we get to become a different character for the dance, but it was never as in-depth as it was during the shooting of the movie. And to work with Ralph and to have him explain to me the direction of how he wanted me to act in a certain scene. It wasn’t like 5, 6, 7, 8, go as he says. He told me stories that connected to an emotional experience in my life. And he knows exactly what he wants you to do, which was a very good experience in many ways. I loved every minute of it. I’m looking at other roles right now- I’m excited about this new acting in my life because I have always wanted to act, but when you’re growing up it’s usually a dream and a lot of people don’t think it can be reality, but Ralph has given me a possibility that can be the next chapter of my life and I am ever so grateful for that.
