PureDWTS Season 19, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Well, the buzz from week 1 has worn off – and just as Deep Throat had predicted, seems like the overall performance level tonight was not as good as what we saw last week. Just about everyone seemed to struggle, and while last week seemed to garner a lot of praise for the boys, this week seemed to earn them some tough love from the judges, while the girls seemed to get praised, on the whole.  Not sure if that was deliberate or not, but I feel as though the judges are already getting a bit cockamamie – particularly Carrie Ann, who seemed to get progressively less coherent as the night wore on, and was only just barely able to conceal her disdain for young, attractive female contestants.

So next week sounds interesting – Movie Night, and you can check out Heidi’s live discussion post as well as PureDerekHough for a few early spoilers ;-)

1.) Bethany & Derek - Seems like Bethany is quickly becoming one of the most buzzed-about contestants on social media – hell, even Taylor Swift is tweeting about her! I also think that, despite her injury, they handled this foxtrot pretty well – they made it traditional enough that Len enjoyed it, but still “funky” enough to be crowd-pleasing. I still think she’s holding back a little (maybe it’s the injury, maybe it’s nerves) and we have yet to see her 100% in the dance, but I do think she’s got a lot more to show us, and ended up looking the best of any of the celebs this week.

2.) Alfonso & Witney - Ok, yes, I’m totally biased because I love Alfonso – but this guy didn’t exactly have an easy row to hoe this week: there was the pressure to deliver after his fantastic first week showing, a crummy song for a samba that was also wayyyyy too fast, and a young, new pro that is not yet used to the expectations that come with getting a very talented partner. I still say this was technically the strongest performance of the night, even though it wasn’t the highest-scoring; and I’m still astounded by Alfonso’s musicality and the way he doesn’t “waste” the music – he pays attention to every little beat and accent, and knows just how to move in order to express it. Thought the judges were a tad harsh – still think this was better than both Janel & Lea. But whatevs – they needed to level the playing field a bit after last week, and I guess saddling Alfonso with a tough song & dance was the way to do it.

3.) Sadie & Mark - A cute, very age (and Sadie)-appropriate jazz routine with a unique twist – I kinda dig that Mark was able to step out of his comfort zone and choreograph to a country song. Thought Sadie handled it well enough – maybe a bit unsure of herself at times, but overall her confidence really pleasantly surprised me. Love that she could roll her hips without fear. Seems pretty obvious to me that Carrie Ann is not a fan, but you know what? I know a lot of people that don’t particularly care for Carrie Ann, so that’s ok :-) Kinda felt bad for Sadie after she got her critiques – she seemed a bit disappointed. But I think she & Bethany are generating the most buzz amongst the female contestants, so I doubt she’s going anywhere anytime soon.

4.) Lea & Artem - Lea handled the jive much better than I thought she would, for sure – but c’mon. A 35??? The high score of the night, and only one point behind Alfonso’s showstopping jive last week? Even though Lea attacked it with zeal, I still saw some pretty major posture issues, some very limp kicks & flicks, and some definite loss of connection. I may have given it a 32, tops. Yeah, she’s got moves – but I don’t think she was as fantastic tonight as the judges made her out to be.

5.) Janel & Val - Second week in a row where I feel like these two got saddled with a song & dance that didn’t really give them the opportunity to show what they’re capable of. Mama Spence asked about 15 seconds in, “Is this a tango? It feels like a tango.” And sure enough, they were doing a foxtrot that was so staccato that it really did look much more like a tango. Janel handled it well enough, I guess, but there were a few minor bobbles where she lost a bit of balance. Again, I’m left with an overall feeling of “Ok, that was decent…but what else can you do?” Besides perpetuate fauxmances, of course. ;-)

6.) Randy & Karina - If Alfonso got a bit hosed this week, so did Randy – no way in HELL his cha-cha deserved the same score as trainwreck Tavis’! Sure, he wasn’t quite as fluid or at ease as he was last week, but hell, at least the guy remembered his choreography, and there was actual cha-cha in his cha-cha…he was a tad stiff, but so was Tavis, and Tavis managed to get off much more easily.  And then twatwaffle Carrie Ann starts whining about wanting Randy to be sexier, and then I lament that, by going first, Randy has gotten a bit low-balled in his score, and overall I’m left feeling a bit indignant on behalf of these two.  Randy’s still super charming and is (calmly) doing the best he can – he’s not having Tavis meltdowns, or whining like Antonio, or  beating himself up like Alfonso.  Give the guy a break, judges!

7.) Tommy & Peta –  Y’know, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think Tommy might be my favorite partner of Peta’s – and that’s saying something, considering I loved Donald Driver! But on the real, I kinda dig that he’s bringing out a more fun, light-hearted side of Peta – she doesn’t have to be the sex kitten when she’s around him, and she doesn’t have to push, push, push him to do great because he might be a contender (I doubt anyone thinks he’s gonna win the whole damn thing at this point :-) ) She seems to be genuinely enjoying this season, and she & Tommy just have a great rapport. And really, the Chonger does have rhythm – seems to have some musicality, and isn’t afraid to shake what he’s got (manboobs, apparently). Love that they’re still giving us dances that are fairly technically sound, while still hilarious to watch. Definitely hope they stick around for awhile.

8.) Mike & Emma - There’s really not much point in critiquing Mike’s dancing – he’s bad. Like, REALLY bad – and his samba this week was no exception. Very little content, and he barely handled the little that he had with any sort of proficiency. But as I said last week, his appeal doesn’t lie in his dancing – it lies in his ability to say “f*ck it” and give it his best shot, and still maintain a sense of humor about things. THAT’S his not-so-secret weapon in this competition: charm. And y’know what? I’m ok with that – we have Alfonso, Janel, Lea, Bethany, & Sadie to give us the great dancing this season. There’s room for celebs like Mike & Tommy, who provide the comic relief :-) And that’s why I think he’s still got a few weeks left in him…

9.) Antonio & Cheryl - Antonio does SLIGHTLY better this week than he did last week, but something about him still just BUGS. I don’t know if it was the whining at Cheryl during the rehearsal, or the generally pained expression he gets when he’s dancing sometimes, but I just get the feeling that he’s not really having fun with the overall experience of DWTS, unlike Mike & Tommy. I guess it was a decent rumba – seemed like Cheryl was doing most of the work, though, and the chemistry between them seemed almost non-existent. Loved the song – that was about the only thing about this routine that I could stand up and shout about. Otherwise – just meh. Definitely fading into the woodwork for me.

10.) Jonathan & Allison - And Allison makes a rookie mistake: veering too far off the beaten path in choreography of very basic dances. Sorry, but this routine was all about Allison – and poor Jonathan was just there every now and then to offer her something to lean on, whilst literally fading into the background while wearing a black costume on a very dimly lit stage. Was it cool to see Allison dancing full-out? Sure. She’s a great dancer – but we already know that. I want to see her turn a non-dancer into a good dancer…and she really didn’t accomplish that in this case. Hopefully people continue to vote for them, so they have a second chance to impress…because if not, I think the former Mr. Aaron Samuels could be in some trouble in the coming weeks.

11.) Betsey & Tony - Awwww, could Betsey be any more stinkin’ adorable? Loved how excited she was about her hair, her makeup, and her costume. And thankfully, they opted not to do anything with props this week, and their foxtrot went off without a hitch. Sure, Betsey didn’t really knock it out of the park (and the choreography wasn’t very hard), but she kept up with it respectably, and seemed to be enjoying herself…which is more than I can say for some of the other couples this week. 8-O Don’t think she’s out of the danger zone, though, yet, and I would not be surprised to see her in the bottom 2 tomorrow night. But at least this week’s routine was an improvement on last week’s, and I think some people might throw her a few sympathy votes.

12.) Tavis & Sharna –  Deep Throat had mentioned that Tavis had little to no rehearsal time, and that it showed – and boy, did it. He was mechanically stomping around, clearly looking at Sharna in order to remember the choreography, and it didn’t look like he was having fun at all – plus he didn’t exactly get a flattering edit in his package, where he was throwing a bit of a tantrum about “complicated steps” and “having a meltdown” instead of just listening to his partner. Like Lolo last week, I think Tavis’ mouth may be the thing that ultimately does him in – he just does not know when to SHUT UP. He just keeps prattling on, harping on the same thing over and over again, and it ultimately screws him. I think the judges were very, very kind with his score, but I don’t know that it’s enough to keep him around another week. Seemed to get a bit lost in the shuffle, and didn’t exactly come across as Mr. Charming this week. If not him, then Betsey – but my gut is saying Tavis is leaving us tomorrow night.

So what are your thoughts on tonight’s show? Favorite? Least favorite? Who’s going home? And what are your predictions for next week? :-)

PureDWTS Season 19 Music Wish List

Normally this list would be a lot longer, but John, Heidi, & Lori all had brain farts on music – leaving Vogue & I to pick up the slack ;-) Here’s some of the songs we’d love to hear on DWTS this season…and we want to hear yours! Let us know in the comments what songs you’re hoping get used on the show!

Courtney:

“Chandelier” by Sia – This has been on repeat on my iPod all summer.  Just a great song for a contemporary routine.

“It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones – I’ve wished for it before, and now that we finally got Alfonso on the show, I need to see a quickstep to it…or maybe even a quickstep/samba fusion ;-)

“Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart – My perennial song wish – you guys know this :-) Well I wished for Alfonso & got him – maybe Rob Wade will give me my much-anticipated paso doble to this one! 8-)

“You & I (Nobody in the World)” by John Legend - While everyone was going crazy over “All of Me” last season, my favorite song off of John’s latest album is this one – it’s kind of the R&B answer to Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight”: a guy telling his lady she’s beautiful no matter what, as he watches her get ready to go out at night.  And if you haven’t seen the video yet, go watch it right MEOW – it’s just perfect.  If I only see one rumba all season – I want it to be to this song.

“Stay” by Shakespears Sister – Thought about this song last season upon finding out that Candace & Charlie were dancing to Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me”.  It’s a pretty old song, but it would make a stellar song for a contemporary routine – hell, I think it would make a fantastic contemporary TRIO song, based on the narrative of the music video.  Give it to Derek and watch him work wonders :-)

“Conjunction Junction” from Schoolhouse RockHad an epiphany the other night while watching a documentary about Schoolhouse Rock – how fun would it be if they did a Schoolhouse Rock theme week? This song would make such a fun foxtrot, and would allow the pros to show off a bit more of a playful side.

“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor – This song is so ridiculously catchy, and my sister and I have a running inside joke about this song and a gif of a dancing honey badger.  Just don’t ask :-P Would be a fun cha-cha.

“Love Runs Out” by OneRepublic – A currently-popular song that’s actually appropriate for paso doble.  So please, producers – no more duds like “Sail”.

Vogue:

“Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson – I’d love to see Alfonso bring this song to life as his older self being this is the song he did with Michael in the Pepsi commercial. That could possibly give us a big “Michael Jackson” moment and I love how this show features something by Michael almost every season.

“A Place With No Name” by Michael Jackson – This is my favorite song currently. I’d freak if the pros performed this in a group number. They could bring on Sharna’s boyfriend Paul Kirkland to dance as well and help with choreography being he performs in the new Michael Jackson Vegas show.

“Come Get It Bae” by Pharrell – This is another one of my current favorite songs. I don’t care who performs it or how….just so they do it. I know Sharna likes this song a lot too.

“Hunter” by Pharrell – Being this song has “Duck Dynasty” mentions, I’d love to see Mark and Sadie dance to this song. Not sure if it’s age or lyric appropriate (maybe the band could fix it somehow?), but, it’s a great dance song.

“Anything Goes” by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga – What a beautiful song for a Fox Trot or a Waltz.

“Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias – This would be such a great song for a “Latin” group number. The cast could bring the video to life.

“Fairytale” by Alexander Rybak – What a cool and snappy pop Irish/Hungarian “gypsie” jig. A song like this would make a great mix up to the show. I was hooked the first time I heard it.

Queremos Paz” by The Gotan Project – This song would be so cool for a Tango or Argnetine Tango. Actually, I’d take anything by The Gotan Project for a Latin number. Ssssssssssss

Now let’s hear your suggestions! 8-)

PureDWTS Season 18 End-of-Season Awards – Which Song Choice Was the Worst?

So you’ve seen the results for the best guest judge voting – now onto the results for the crappiest song of the season!!!
worstsongchoice

Write-in votes:

“All of Me” by John Legend (Meryl’s foxtrot) – 2

“Girl” by Pharrell (Amy & Mark’s salsa) – 1

“Can’t Remember to Forget You” by Shakira feat. Rihanna (Nene’s Argentine tango) – 1

“Dare You” by Hardwell (Amy’s freestyle) – 1

“Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers (James’ rumba) – 1

Votes omitted due to failure to follow the format – 2

Courtney: The two songs I thought would garner the most votes, did – and while “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems” probably didn’t do Charlie any favors…it actually started to grow on me after a second viewing :-P Maybe it was just the enthusiasm with which he attacked it, but he made the most of a crummy song.  The same cannot be said for “I Luh Ya Papi” – which the two couples dancing to clearly disliked as much as we did.  It drives me nuts when J. Lo does songs like these – they just make her sound downright unintelligent, and make it seem like she’s trying to remind everyone that she’s hip and has chola street cred because she talks like this.  The song is bad, no doubt – but I also don’t think Val or Maks really put their all into choreographing that duel, and thus the end result was even more lackluster.  I have to roll my eyes a bit at “I Wan’na Be Like You”, because I really only added that because I saw so many Meryl fans griping about how “terrible a samba song” it was. Boo hoo, poor Princess Meryl gets saddled with one mediocre individual song the entire season – go ask Charlie how it feels to get screwed over every other week, with “Sail”, “Mo’ Money, Mo Problems”, “Wildest Moments”, etc.  And James has more to gripe about with that gadawful “Gasolina” than Meryl dancing to a song from The Jungle Book.  As for the write-ins? Once again hard for me to say that Meryl got screwed with her foxtrot song, because even though it wasn’t really a foxtrot, it was still one of the top 10 songs in the country at the time and the shippers (and judges) ate it right up.  And anyone wanna make a bet that whoever wrote in “Dare You” was an insecure Meryl fan? :-P

Heidi: I ain’t takin’ that bet, Courtney. Same kinda idiot who haunts Amy’s instagram to scream “Meryl and Maks!!” on every single photo that Amy posts. :::rolls eyes:::  Must protect Princess Meryl at all costs!!  My nickname is an inside joke…wish I could say the same for Meryl’s. But no…the pedestal is still very, very high. Meryl overcame so many obstacles on her path to victory…horrendous song choices…mean judges picking on the stellar choreography…oh, wait. :-D  ANYway, JLo was getting  a lot of crap on the radio this morning for pretending to be “Jennie from the block” while staying in Manhattan. Apparently she gave 25k tickets to people in Brooklyn for her concert and half of them didn’t show up? With songs like “I luh Ya Papi” can anyone really blame them??  Yes, the song was bad (it got my vote)…but the choreographers did not help at ALL. Lord what a whimpy assed dance. The difference between “Mo Money, Mo Problems” and the “I Wan’na Be Like You” is also totally in the choreographer, IMO.  Neither song is a REALLY terrible song choice (but Charlie definitely got the short end of the stick in this instance), but Sharna made the best of it while Maks couldn’t get past it.  I can’t help thinking that if Derek or Mark had been handed Maks’ samba song (or JLo’s song), we would have seen some pretty creative choreography. Ah well.

Vogue: It’s so funny as when I first heard Charlie had “Sail” for a Paso Doble, I didn’t think it would work, but, it actually didn’t bother me. Give it up to Charlie and Sharna making the best of it….again as they did through out the season. Another song that just annoys me to no end anyway is “I Love Ya Pai”. I cringed through out Danica and Meryl’s Samba duel with that song. However, another song I didn’t like was “I Wanna Be Like You” for Meryl’s Samba. Awful song with a lack luster dance too. In the end, I voted for “I Wanna Be Like You” for the worst song.

Vote for Your Favorites in the PureDWTS Season 18 End-of-Season Awards!!!

So against my better judgment, I decided to resurrect these awards, after skipping them for a few seasons :-P Just figured that everyone had some pretty strong opinions about this season, and would want to discuss (or argue…) about some of the finer aspects of this season…so here’s the gist:

1.) You get one vote per award category.

2.) If you don’t see your first choice listed, you are able to write-in votes for SOME of the categories – but here’s my strong words of caution: seldom do write-in votes win these awards, so I would encourage you to only write-in if you feel really strongly about something; if your write-in vote is grossly misspelled, doesn’t make sense, or cannot be understood, I’m throwing it out – I’ve had too many seasons of weeding through pages upon pages of write-in votes that were only slightly above jibberish in terms of clarity.  And if you decide to be a little jerk and answer questions like “Which was the best dance of the season?” with “All of Meryl’s dances!!!” or “tie between Meryl’s tango, Candace’s contemporary, Amy’s Argentine tango, and Charlie’s jazz”, I’m throwing out your vote.  Pick ONE – like all of the people courteous enough to actually follow the rules of this poll.

3.) Polls will be up for ONE WEEK – so get your votes in NOW. Read more..

DWTS Season 18, THE FINALE, Part 2 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show (Spoilers)

Repeat of rules from last night/last week: Once again, due to heavy traffic, we have to institute a few ground rules for tonight show. Most of these are good rules ALL OF THE TIME, and are basic netiquette.

  1. DO NOT hit refresh every few seconds – in fact, do not hit refresh every five minutes! Read, comment if you like, then walk away from the computer for five to ten minutes. I know this is hard, but it will prevent others from losing their minds trying to read and/or update the site.
  2. DO NOT use the comment section like it’s twitter – it’s not twitter. Make an actual comment with context of who you’re talking about, who you’re talking to (if it applies), etc. Context, and more than one line. If you break this rule more than one time, I start deleting. If you do it a couple times, you’ll find yourself on moderation.  Perhaps for life. :-)  Keep in mind that if you can’t follow this rule, I can make you follow it.
  3. Try very hard to keep the ugly to a minimum. Think before you post. If you’ve been called out previously on this blog for your behavior, this will be extra important because there’s only so much I will tolerate. I’m not talking about differing opinions, I’m talking about nasty. If I get the sense that you are purposely trolling  (look it up if you’re not sure), I will just block you. No warning other than this one.

Again, we’ve turned on the Comment Moderation feature for the entire site. That way, in the event of an unexpected elimination, we can week out any trouble makers that much quicker. ;-)

So, if you’re in rehab from the drinking during last night’s show, raise your hand. :-D Read more..

Tonight’s Drinking Game: Take a  shot every time they show Mark getting hurt and ask if he will dance. Take a double shot every time someone mentions that Maks has never won before. Triple shot if it’s Maks himself.  See you all in rehab tomorrow. :-)

ETA: Well, you oughta be half drunk already. :-)  Everyone looks pretty though.

ETA: James is IN IT TO WIN IT. Take that Meryl and Maks shippers…oh don’t worry, you’ll get your kissing. :-P  Really, good dance from James.

Can’t believe Meryl is finally going second….now when it no longer matters. Guess they did learn from Zendaya, eh?

ETA3: Good dance by Meryl and Maks, but I still don’t feel all this magic that I sense I’m supposed to get. :-)

ETA4: Poor Candace and Mark. She struggled with that dance and I have a feeling she’ll get a more generous score than she should…but hell, they were right. That had to be harder than hell to have Mark go down and be uncertain if he would dance with you or not, but she held up really well. She looked very pretty too. :-)  Love her.

ETA5: WOW. Are we sure that Amy is a double amputee?? Cuz that dance was a big ole FU to her critics. LOL.  And Jennifer Grey in the audience looking like she was going to lose it complete. Awesome. :-D

ETA6: Great freestyle by James!! Loved it. Looked like Sonya might have choreo’d it.

ETA7: Whoa, Evan dude lighten up!

ETA8 Boy, I’m really surprised by that almost kiss. And that dance didn’t look anything like Derek and Kelly’s. Except for the staging, the lighting, almost costume too. :-D

ETA9: Love Tom making fun of the whole teddy bear thing. And really seriously even the comments from Len and Bruno were the same as they were for Kelly’s freestyle.

ETA10: I was too nervous to even watch Candace and Mark, I was afraid Mark’s damn shoulder was going pop out. Boy has balls that’s for sure.

ETA11: Nope, no agenda. CAI starting to sound like Meryl and Maks fans – asking about lifts less than half an hour after Meryl did a dance with just as many. :::rolls eyes::: At least she didn’t purposely underscore her cuz she didn’t like the rope, LEN.  THIS is what we’re talking about when we way that other couples get away with shit that Derek can’t.  Anyway, beautiful dance – I was nervous the whole time, wondering what Derek was up to.

ETA12: When I’m right, I’m right. Not even 15 minutes ago I said that the very bad score on Candace’s freestyle likely meant that Candace was going through. Not surprising.  And they were likely called safe in the order they will place tomorrow. Meryl, Amy and then Candace.  But it doesn’t have to be if everyone VOTES!! ;-)

Tonight’s drinking game?? One shot for every ass kiss. :-) Happy drinking.

Candace – really good dance and Bruno is exactly right. I might not have noticed any mistakes if it hadn’t shown so clearly on her face.

And she’s safe. Okay, that’s a tad scary, although she could be in the bottom two and they want to scare the hell out of Charlie, Meryl (and Amy) fans. Since Amy is going third, and Charlie is next…one of them will be in jeopardy.

ETA 1: Charlie and Amy are in jeopardy – why are you people freaking out already?? The producers of this show are the most manipulative people on the planet. Be worried when James is called safe.

Great dance from Charlie…I’ll be waiting for people to bitch about his dropped hanky. Oh. Wait. :-)

ETA 2: Holy crap…again, mesmerized by Amy and Derek! Great quickstep!! Should be a 39, if not…well, she’ll get more votes. And if she for some crazy reason goes home?? She has Oprah and Kenny Ortega in her corner. :-)

ETA 3: Meryl in jeopardy and James safe. I’m so shocked…only not really. :-) Who wants to bet me that the last two standing are Charlie and Meryl?? Unless Amy is truly at the bottom, the producers won’t be able to resist.

I missed James dance because I was policing this site. People, we ain’t twitter. Cool your jets.

ETA 4: And here comes the “winner” narrative for Meryl and Maks. Massive struggle to get the dance.

ETA 5: Those were some ugly ass shoes Meryl was wearing. Period shoes I guess??

Ooo…blow to the Meryl Maks shippers when Meryl puts Charlie ahead of Maks on the partnership scale. :-D

ETA 6: Very nice Macy’s Stars of Dance. It just occurred to me that the reason Derek is creative director (besides being the best person for the job and they want him to get Emmys cuz it’s good for the show) is partly because they never expected Amy to last this long and they need Derek on the show.

ETA 7: Is Candace peaking at the right time or what?? Great choreo from Mark – loved it. :-) They are kinda stacking it so she’s more certain to get 4th place though.

ETA 8: Charlie was a tad flat on that. I still love him though and will give him all my votes if Amy goes home.

Jaysus – Derek FINALLY gets his due from the judges on the choreo this season. That was fantastic. Really fantastic. If Amy goes home tonight, she will still have some of the most memorable dances of the season. Kenny Ortega…you da man. :-)

ETA 9: WARNING…that rumba wasn’t that good, but the judges are raving. Danger Will Robinson…Danger Will Robinson. Long time viewers of this show will know what this means….

ETA 10: Hehehehe…cue the walking choreo. Anyone count?? :-D

Meryl is such a pretty girl, why does Maks keep dressing her in gawdawful outfits??

Another perfect score for Meryl and Maks. So shocked. LOL – not really. :-) Congrats to Maks though – he finally vocalized something in a way that I think he actually meant instead of insulting half the population. :-)

Amy is called safe first – told you guys an hour ago when the three Olympians were in jeopardy that Meryl and Charlie would be the last two standing. Someday you will listen to me. :-)

Very sad that we’ve lost Charlie – Would have loved to see a freestyle from Sharna. I think she could rival Derek – while Maks…won’t. GREAT JOB CHARLIE AND SHARNA!!

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 9 – What’s Left to Dance? UPDATE

So somebody requested that I do an update to my first “What’s Left to Dance?” post, just to see what remaining dances the celebs have to do this season…or rather, which dances they might not get to at all :-(  I can’t recall another season where the celebs have had so many of the dances left to do with so little of the competition remaining – and I can’t say I’m enjoying it.  But before I get too far into it, here’s my handy-dandy chart, updated with everyone’s week 9 dances EXCEPT Amy & Derek (as they haven’t revealed theirs yet):

remainingdances2

So now to address some questions that are bound to pop up…

What dances are Amy & Derek doing next week??? I don’t know.  Haven’t heard anything official.  But there is a conspicuous gap in one section of the chart, so I would not be shocked to see Amy doing samba, since she’s the only person left that hasn’t already done it/will be doing it next week (in Charlie’s case).  Then again, maybe they think she’ll struggle with samba, and so they’ll give her paso doble instead…IDK.  No clue about the other dance – I would guess that it’s a ballroom dance, since she still has four she hasn’t done yet, but then again, it could also be jazz.  Who knows.  I guess my official “prediction” is samba and foxtrot…but that’s all it is, a prediction.  What do you think?

How many dances are they doing during finale week? And what kind? Again, I know nothing official, but obviously there will be a freestyle, and if Len griping about Charlie’s rumba in week 4 was any indicator, there will probably also be a redemption dance (a dance that the celeb didn’t do so well on the first time around, and could improve upon).  There’s probably also going to be a relay dance of some sort (probably something everyone has done – I’m guessing cha-cha or samba) and maybe some sort of instant dance/24 hour challenge (for the three that advance after the first night – I’m guessing someone will get eliminated after the freestyles on night 1.  Again, just educated guesses.

What about the trio dance??? AND THE PASO DOBLE???!!! I’m guessing the trio dance is kaput for this season, and I would be shocked if we saw another paso doble (unless Amy is doing it next week) since the finalists typically don’t do an unlearned dance in finale week (besides the freestyle).  Yes, it sucks. :-( I also doubt we’ll see another standard waltz or swing routine – seems like those were only brought in to fulfill specific purposes (Amy’s request to dance to a Cinderella song during Disney week, and Amy & Meryl saying they were most looking forward to doing swing in week 2).  Basically, unless someone’s doing it next week – we probably won’t see it again this season.  Sorry.

What do you think the couples will do as their redemption dance? I think it’s kind of a given that Charlie will get rumba, as Len made a point of saying it back in week 4. I would say that they’d saddle Amy with *cringe* waltz again, but I don’t see her being able to improve upon it that much – so I could see them letting her redo her cha-cha instead. Meryl will probably end up redoing rumba as well, which I’m sure will fit right into this Meryl vs. Charlie showdown they’ve been dancing towards all season.  If Candace makes the finale – hehe, she’s got a lot of dances that she could improve upon, but I think for the sake of variety, they’ll pick quickstep for her…she’s got both potential and room to improve on that one. If James makes the finale (and I’m leaning towards it being either Candace OR James that join the other three in the finale), I could see them giving him quickstep as well. That way, they ensure they get at least one ballroom redemption dance.

Will the freestyles be supersized? Given that they’ve been “supersizing” some of the regular dances this season, I don’t think they’ll suddenly opt for austerity and simplicity in the freestyle round…hell, I think the freestyles this time could be super-dupersized. Let’s put it this way: it would not surprise me if the couples called in the entire cast of Game of Thrones, the entire roster of the Miami Heat (blech), and/or the entire Mormon Tabernacle Choir to help with their freestyles at this point…it’s that out of control, kids.

Why are they leaving so many dances unlearned this season? :-( I don’t know, but it kind of gives me a sad. If I had to speculate, I’d say they just got too wrapped up in theme nights and trying to accommodate other random aspects of this season ( i.e. Meryl & Charlie’s travel schedule, Amy’s prostheses’, certain pros’ weaknesses as a choreographer, etc.) that they had to tinker with the dances a bit – why they decided to basically scrap the paso doble, I really don’t know, as that is one dance that it seems like almost anyone could do, regardless of their level of skill or physical abilities…it’s all about selling the performance.  So yeah…it’s a head-scratcher for me, too.

So there’s my thoughts on the remaining dances headed into the semifinals and finals.  What are yours? What unanswered questions do you have about this season?

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 8 – Power Rankings

Much ado about Abby Lee Miller – and honestly, for as bad as I thought she might be, I think she scores she gave were (for the most part) fair, even if she was nitpicking to death on any technique flubs she could find. It was as if the producers had told her “nitpick all you want, but you can’t give any score below an 8″. And a few of the scores seemed a bit too perfect, if you ask me – as if they had be predetermined, because some of the critiques were not matching the scores AT ALL. What I don’t think the producers had planned on, though, was Abby being a bit of a loose cannon – she said a few things that made me go “Ooh, pretty sure the producers didn’t want that broadcasted.” Watching rehearsals??? Pretty sure the judges have always vehemently denied that they do that…yet Abby admitted it like it was a commonplace thing. And then there was Abby sorta-kinda outing Danicanotadancer as a highly trained dancer…I had a good chuckle on that one…

…speaking of Danica, did anyone else get the impression that she was not all that upset about getting eliminated? Maybe she kinda had an idea that her number was up and had already made peace with it, maybe she is just exhausted and eager to get back to her son, maybe the tiff with Maks during duel rehearsal left a bad taste in her mouth…but I didn’t see the emotional display from her I thought we would see when she got eliminated. I was expecting Brandy & Elizabeth Berkeley-esque tears and displays of desperation, given how Type A Danica seems to be…was pleasantly surprised to see her so gracefully accept the whole thing. Maybe in the end, she was glad to have all that pressure off of her to do well…can’t say I blame her.  And this season more than ever, I see the difference between the Chmerkovskiy brothers: Val seems to “get it”, while I’m not sure Maks EVER will.  I think Val is starting to understand what it takes to do well on DWTS, and is developing a more clever, out-of-the-box, Derek-like attitude about things; Maks, on the other hand, seems like an old dog who can’t learn new tricks – and he’s hellbent on winning the show on HIS terms or he’s gonna die trying.  I’ve always felt like Val was the better choreographer, but now I feel like he’s also got the right mindset to win this show someday – and I think Maks is just too set in his ways to really get flexible enough to win (unless he gets a ton of help from the men upstairs).

Which brings me to the “I don’t care about anything she says” heard ’round the world.  *sigh* Do I agree with the sentiment? Yes.  Do I think Maks was just saying what the rest of us were thinking? Yes.  Do I think it was smart of him to say? Errrrr…yes and no.  As I mentioned on Twitter, I wish he would have waited until after their duel had been scored to say it – because saying it after their first dance meant that there was a target on his back for their second dance.  Abby Lee was a complete jerkwad, no doubt – but she was also a jerkwad holding the scoring paddles, and a vindictive jerkwad at that.  What’s to say that Abby might have given them a 9 on that samba instead of an 8, had Maks not said what he said after their rumba? Sure, it was only one point, but you just never know – and this is why I almost always think it’s a better idea for the pros to just bite their tongue when they get the urge to talk back to the judges.  You just never know what the consequences might be…and often, its their celebrity partner that’s paying the price.  At least Val was smart enough to wait until the scores for their second dance were already locked in before talking back to Abby… Read more..

DWTS Season 18, Week 8 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show (Spoilers)

Okay, due to heavy traffic, we have to institute a few ground rules for tonight show. Most of these are good rules ALL OF THE TIME, and are basic netiquette.

  1. DO NOT hitrefresh every few seconds – in fact, do not hit refresh every five minutes!

Okay, that’s all I can think of. Let the games begin. Take a drink every time ALM is a mean ole beyotch and you’ll really enjoy the show! :-D

Court here, filling in for Heidi, who is running a tad late :-) Is it just me, or is Mark sounding an awful lot like Robin Thicke these days?

Oh, I see Abby Lee has her happy face on tonight…NOT.
Good to see Charlie is safe. Mama Spence, however, is worried that Sharna’s bewbs are gonna fall out of her dress during their quickstep.

Charlie kills the quickstep, and both Len & Abby go in for the kill. Tonight is gonna be a loooong night, I’m afraid.

Ok, happy that Charlie got that long-overdue 40, but did anyone else think those were the most incongruous scores/critiques EVER??! The way they were critiquing, I was expecting 8’s. Why pick someone apart if you’re gonna give them a 10? Kinda defeats the purpose…

ETA 1:  Heidi here – I’m back!!  Is it my imagination or are these dances really short. Perhaps it’s just that Danica’s dance took so long to get started.  Ha! Len just copied me. :-)

Meryl and Maks – Rumba or contemporary? I saw rumba content, but they were skating awfully close to the edge there.   Of course Bruno loves it.  Lord, I’m tired of hearing about their chemistry – and is that CAI justifying her good comments?? She’s recalling Charlie’s rumba – and she’s right about that.  Len’s coming down with CAI…and ABL needs to be put out of our misery. Seriously. LOL…sickled feet. Beyotch – bite me.  Maks: “Can we go now.”  Come on MAKS – if ever you were going to spout off, NOW is the time!!!

ALERT….ALERT…ALERT….for the next 10 minutes I’m going to be a Maks fan.  I might even declare this “Maks day” on the blog. Seriously – MOST of the time I hate his spouting off, but I think this time was beyond appropriate.

ETA 2: I knew Mark would give Candace a good dance to that song. Very nice.  One or two tiny rough spots, but I loved it.

ETA 3: So a Derek fan just asked me if his critics would comment about Val’s smoke machine. :::crickets:::  LOL – as if.

ETA 4: Wait…so Meryl gets an 8 from ALM, but JAMES gets a 10?? And we thought CAI judged with her vajayjay.  Lord have mercy.  I’m okay with Meryl getting an 8 for that….but in that case, James should have had a 7, not a 10.

OMG, Amy and Derek…perfection. And I rarely use that to describe anyone.  But I have to comment on Derek’s face. He was working up a good head of PISSED OFF on Amy’s behalf. I’ve been watching that boy for a long time, but that was his “You diss my girl, I kick your asssss” face. :-)  I think it’s very good thing for ALM that she didn’t take any unwarranted shots at him.   Anyway, that was a kick ass AT – I expect nothing less from Derek Hough.

ETA 5: Well, can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I think Meryl and Danica got a bit hosed.  Of course, that song is the worst thing I’ve heard on this show in a while, so there’s that too. I tried to block it out and just look at the dancing and I didn’t think it was as bad as 8’s. All 9’s would have been more appropriate.

ETA 6: Wow wow wow….Candace and Charlie!! Excellent dance. I wonder if the producers will blur Sharna’s lips in the skybox for the west coast. :-D   Love it Sharna, keep it coming.

ETA 7: Ouch – that fall was kinda bad…and Derek’s face. And again, I  have to go to Derek’s face during the judging – I don’t know if he realizes it, but he has a face when Abby is talking that says he’s either pissed or disgusted – not sure which. He was pretty vehement a few years ago in his criticism of ALM, either he or Mark called her teaching style “child abuse” and it appears to me that he’s not had a change of heart on that one.

Man…I don’t want any of them to go home at this point.

And the eliminee is….Danica. I’m sad to say I called this one correctly.  :-(  I had no trouble with the site tonight, so I think that means our readers all behaved themselves -thanks ya’ll.
