PureDWTS Season 20, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Pleasantly surprised this  week – not only with the scoring and the judging, but with the fact that, for the 2nd week in a row, there were no “phone-ins”: every last couple came out and gave it their all, even if it didn’t quite pan out the way they planned (sorry, Chris).  Judging seemed pretty consistent and the scores seemed to match the critiques – one would think this should happen EVERY week, but it’s becoming more and more of a rarity these days…so for tonight, I am happy 🙂 But that could change next week…

Somewhat sad to see Redfoo & Emma go, but I’ll just leave it at this: I think staying in the competition would have potentially been quite stressful on both of them, as I think they may have forgotten to have fun a few times in rehearsal this week.  Ultimately, though, Foo went out on a pretty high note – he was definitely the most improved from last week to this week, and he did show some serious potential…although I think he probably would have struggled just to get the votes week after week, because I just don’t see too many middle-aged, conservative-leaning housewives being huge LMFAO fans 😎

1.) Nastia & Derek – I think Rumer & Val may have gotten a bit of a gut check after watching this dance – they ain’t the only ones who want that trophy 🙂 This was a great, almost technically-perfect rumba – Nastia’s got the lines and the feet and the arms and the posture and the extension.  Here’s the problem I have: she seems to have a lot of walls up, and the chemistry between she & Derek was almost non-existent.  I guess the best way I could describe her facial expressions is “girl who has never been kissed and doesn’t quite know whether to close her eyes or keep them open” 🙂 And another observation: I think Nastia may be an unfortunate sufferer of “resting bitch face” – I think her neutral face is just so serious and calm that it may come across as a tad standoffish…and I wish I had some advice for her on that, but some people just aren’t as smiley as others.  Maybe stand in front of a mirror and practice smiling? I dunno 😛 Hoping Derek can work with her on emotional connection, because the technique is there – she just needs to get a tad more vulnerable. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 8 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

Heh. Almost forgot about this post. Not that it matters since everything is  out there anyway.

I got some of the info on the dances from various videos, some from Wiki – if you see anything wrong, let me know. I was traveling a large part of the week, as was Courtney, as a result we lost track a bit. 🙂 There were a few days where I didn’t know which end was up.

I will say that it will be interesting to see how Janel will do with the quickstep, where the frame is so important. She’s gotten away with not having to worry about that overly much – and straight up said that was why she was glad she got contemporary. I think Beth will be fine and I have a feeling Alfonso will be back at the top of the leaderboard – we’ll see. Lea’s dances are why I’m afraid that even if she does make it through this week, she won’t make the finale. Samba? Yikes. Paso maybe better for her. I also expect a lot from Sadie’s Jive. Again, we’ll see.

ETA: So, Alfonso is going first – I think he safely can, with no issues.

ETA2: Not sure on which versions of those songs are being used, so I guessed. 🙂

DWTS Season 19, Week 8: Dancing by the Numbers!

So…

Where to start?

Yes, I do think that the scores were determined in advance by the judges because they wanted to keep Janel safe for another two weeks. Did they know it was necessary? Does it matter? I’m not sure the judges know, but at the end of the day, they underscored Sadie, in particular, relative to Janel. Janel’s dance was good, but if it was a dance worthy of a perfect score, so was Sadie’s and Alfonso’s – and Bethany’s for that matter.  But perhaps those three don’t need the help, eh?

By giving Janel 43 points last week, they’ve essentially sent her all the way to the semi-finals based on one less than perfect dance. Saved her for last week AND this coming week. This way, it is likely they get their preferred finale of Alfonso, Sadie, Bethany and Janel – sucks to be Lea and Tommy, barring someone not getting the votes we think they are. The semi-final scoring will tell the tale. If Janel suddenly isn’t all that great, it means she ain’t getting the vote (like we suspect) – after all, the judges want to be RIGHT. They want their preferred finale, but in the end they want their scores to be close to how the votes are going. Pride.

Anyway, I can’t even work up any righteous indignation about this anymore. It’s so predictable. Young actress works for ABC = Semi-final, whether she deserves it or not. And really, she is dancing better than Lea right now – I just don’t *LIKE* her. Not only do I get stealth mean girl vibe, but that gross showmance she had going on with Val was just annoying after a season centered on an over the top showmance.  Yuck.

But, on to the scores. Who’s got what and how much damage did the judges do this past week? Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 8 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

Well, this week is somewhat confusing – or it was – but thanks to Derek’s blog I think we have a slightly better than vague understanding of what’s going on. 😀  So, each couple will dance their assigned dance – they dynamic duo – shown below. After that, the person with the high score is “immune” from elimination tomorrow night. The person in second place gets to choose who they want to dance against and that couple gets to choose the style of dance.  The winner of the dance off gets…3 points??  Where did I get that from, as I don’t think it was Derek. Somewhere on this site most likely and I”m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Put on yer tin foil hats, kids – who wants to take bets on who’s going to get that precious immunity?  While I am certainly one to think that they manipulate the hell out of this show to serve some (often barely) hidden agenda, the plain fact is that the last two times they did this immunity thing, it was won by Amber and Kellie – both went on to win the show, so clearly they were not in much danger.  But then, you have to look back at the “winner take all cha cha” which was just another form of immunity that they handed to Chelsea – someone we had been predicting was on her way out for a week or two prior to that. So, I guess it depends on what the true agenda is – save a family member (Chelsea, Janel) or just to screw around and make the show more complicated than it has to be? I guess we have to wait and see.  Lord knows, the two women that we’ve been speculating could be in trouble certainly got dance styles very much in their favor. AGAIN, in Janel’s case.

Janel and  Val – Contemporary, Romeo and Juliette
Vote: 1-800-868-3405

Bethany and Derek – Salsa, Lucy and Ricky Riccardo
Vote: 1-800-868-3403

Alfonso and Witney – Cha Cha Cha, Batman and Robin (WTF?)
Vote: 1-800-868-3401

Lea and Artem – Jazz, Bonnie and Clyde
Vote: 1-800-868-3407

Michael and Emma – Foxtrot, Tarzan and Jane
Vote: 1-800-868-3409

Tommy and Peta – Paso Doble, Johnny and June Cash
Vote: 1-800-868-3413

Sadie and Mark – Contemporary, Adam and Eve Song:

DWTS Season 19, Week 7: Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, it’s really interesting how the team dances make an already screwed up leader board even MORE screwed up. In what universe is Sadie below both Lea and Janel?? Cray cray universe, that’s which one. I can’t figure out what they have against that girl – and why they are so high on Lea. They have Lea as 4 points higher than Sadie in her individual dance – it’s’ times like this when I think that perhaps giving your celeb very simple choreo is an advantage. I’m not sure it should be. Mark went with a production and harder choreo and wasn’t rewarded at all for challenging Sadie AND teaching her to dance. Was she a little wobbly in spots? Sure – but she also had harder choreo.

I dunno. Don’t get me wrong – I love Lea too, but these oddities make me scratch my head.  Because in the past, one of the requirements from the judges certainly seemed to be upping the challenge each week, if they were a good dancer. But, as usual, the rule that applies to some pros/celebs doesn’t apply to all.  I was ready to be super pissed at Len, for example, when he started talking about production to Derek on a HALLOWEEN themed episode – but instead of giving Derek his usual 7, he gave him a 9. Shocker. But then we found out that Len was saving his true ire for Mark and Sadie. Granted, they had MORE production and the dance wasn’t quite as strong – but NINE points difference?? Lord have mercy, whose cheerios did Mark pee in? (Note to Mark fans: you should focus your silly hate on the people actually handing out scores…and here’s an idea, instead of trying to pull Beth’s score DOWN, you should be bitching to get Sadie’s score UP. Always, the focus on Derek when he had nothing to do with it. Stupid.).

As we have often speculated in the past, the one reason to low ball someone is for the storyline. Often a storyline that includes the lowballed celeb getting a shit ton of votes. This way, when they are safe…or even end up WINNING…everyone will be shocked. The audience will look at each other in wonder and say, “but she got low scores all the way up to week __ – that’s amazing she won!!” Because, folks, not everyone is really paying attention and some of the audience ain’t actually too bright (see: shippers).  Where this becomes a problem is the other side of the stupid audience coin – sometimes constant lowballing leads the sheeple…I mean, audience to believe that that person is not as good a dancer as they actually are. There are people out there who actually believe the judges know what they’re talking about (gasp), when in reality, there is more that goes into their scores than actual dancing a lot of the time. PureDWTS Season 19, Week 7 – Power Rankings

Three cheers for an opening pro dance that I actually enjoyed! Thought it was cute how they worked in a Halloween theme.  At the very least, it wasn’t a bunch of  female bumping & grinding & hair-flipping…or Pitbull. 😯

So Len was back, and as I kind of predicted – he was grumpy, and Julianne kind of reverted back to being the level-headed judge.  Carrie Ann is still the airheaded judge; I can’t even really remember anything Bruno said.  Overall, I don’t feel as though the quality of judging improved much with Len’s return – so I’m fine if he doesn’t want to come back next season.  Hell, I don’t really care if ANY of the judges come back next season 😉

Kinda had an inkling that Antonio was toast the minute the judges started laying into him for a dance that really wasn’t that bad, in my opinion – it was probably Antonio’s best, and though he’s still kind of an awkward mover, he seemed to smooth things out quite a bit better this week.  But I’m guessing that he just wasn’t connecting with viewers – I felt like we never really got to see the real Antonio.  Wish he would have given us more of a peek into his work or family life.

1.) Bethany & Derek – Bethany was given great scores and great choreography this week, but here’s the odd part for me: in both her individual and team dance, there seemed to be moments where she just wasn’t…fully present.  It’s hard to describe, but it’s like she went into autopilot both times – not sure if she’s just really tired or burnt out, but she just didn’t seem as invested as she was in her tango last week.  Thought the concept and setting of her paso was great, and Derek gave her some great choreo in their team dance – but she just didn’t grab the bull by the horns like she normally does.  She wasn’t bad by any means – she was just not as dazzling for me as she usually is.  Maybe it was just this week and having to learn two dances – hopefully she’ll be back to 100% next week.  But she can leave the Maleficient/Queen Amidala hair – wasn’t loving that. DWTS Season 19, Week 6: Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, this week is interesting. And hard. Why? Well, Michael got a 30. That makes several things uncertain. Is he the weakest dancer left? That’s debatable. Honestly, I don’t think either Tommy or Antonio is that much better than him, although Tommy is equally charming in my book.  This puts Antonio at a disadvantage – it all hinges on his fanbase.

But then…some of you remember my analysis of “Jeopardy” I’m sure. Basically, if I remember correctly, about half the time, Jeopardy is actually an indication of who will be going home soon, but ONLY for the person last to be called safe. Usually two weeks after being put in jeopardy and being last to be called safe. This is NOT as true if you are in the semi-final.  Anyway, Antonio hasn’t even been in jeopardy, has he? And he’s definitely never been last to be called safe. The other thing that was obvious from that analysis was that it’s hard to tell what their pattern is until the season is over.  But, Jonathan was last to be called safe two weeks before he left.  Betsey was in the bottom two and was eliminated in week 4. Michael has been last to be called safe a few times now.  And Janel was last to be called safe this past week. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t. More likely it does for Michael in the near term.

Anyway, let’s take a look at the scores and the percentages. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

Ah, Halloween. Either great or a trainwreck – don’t think there will be too much middle ground. Will be nice to see Janel to a slow dance. Alfonso too, for that matter. Very curious to see how Sadie will handle the serious Paso Doble. Lea and her posture problems combined with an Argentine Tango? Could be interesting.

ETA: For those of you who didn’t read the press release – both Ella Henderson & Nikki Yanofsky will be performing their songs live on Monday night.

ETA2: I love me some Tommy, but isn’t that song kinda slow for a quickstep?? Okay, to answer my own question, I just listed to the version they’re dancing to and it should be okay.

ETA3: The Taiko Drums really DO work for Beth and Derek. Wow.

ETA4: You all remember what happened the last time Mike’s song was used, right??

PureDWTS Season 19, Week 6 – Power Rankings

I apologize for this being so ungodly late, but between all of the media and other posts we had going up earlier, a sh*tastic day at work, and some of you just generally driving me to drink, I decided that these rankings could wait a bit.  Side note: if you wanna talk about the team dances next week, go here; if you so desire to vote for the dance styles and songs that the couples are dancing in week 7 (I think), this post has directions.  I’m pretty partial to the idea of Tommy doing a Viennese waltz to “I’d Rather Go Blind”, but to each his own 😉

After two hours of Pitbull the peanut-butter eating, Spanglish-speaking naked mole rat judging, I still have no idea was “DALE!!!” means.  Oh well – I guess when it all came down to it, he was a halfway decent judge; he saw right through the showmance front that Vajanel put up, and actually knew the names of a few salsa steps to compliment  Alfonso on.  Doesn’t mean I ever want to see him as a judge again, though 😉 But hey, Mr. Worldwide needed a plug for his gig hosting the American Music Awards, so I guess that’s why we got him this week…

…the judging seemed kinder this week, so I wonder if there was a huge backlash from some of the out-and-out cruelty we saw last week and the judges were told to ease up a bit.  Still think Alfonso & Sadie (and now Bethany) are getting nitpicked, while Janel, Antonio, & Tommy are getting babied a bit; Lea and Mike are a toss-up each week.  Will be  interesting  to see if the dynamic of the judging panel changes at all with Len back – wonder if we’ll start to see more complaints about “messin’ about”, and Julianne will suddenly become the “nice judge” now that Len the critic is back.

Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan – kinda stinks that he didn’t last longer, but if he had to get eliminated, at least he went out on a high note.  His jazz was probably his (and Allison’s) best dance yet.  Not sure Allison made a strong enough showing to warrant getting asked back as a pro again next season, but we shall see…

1.) Alfonso & Witney – Perhaps not the most “strictly salsa” salsa we’ve ever seen on the show, but I can’t blame Witney for sneaking in some hip-hop to play to Alfonso’s strengths.  Thought he could have used a bit more hip action, but then I have to wonder if Witney tried to keep the steps a bit tight & boxy in order to baby his groin injury.  Still a very enjoyable routine – there was some complex stuff in there, and Alfonso managed to stay on-time and in-step with Witney. He’s still the showman of this season, for sure – and with the way the crowd goes crazy after his dances, I think he’s gonna be around till the end. 🙂 Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 6 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

It’s Pitbull week! Except not really…oh wait, I know! It’s Latin week! Nope, not really that either…hmmm.  Who the hell knows what the theme of this week is supposed to be.  Some couples are dancing to Pitbull songs, but not all of them; and we’ve got a few ballroom dances peppered into a bunch of Latin dances…oh, and one lone jazz.  A little something for everyone, I suppose.

I could see Jonathan making a bit of a comeback this week, since jazz seems like it would be right in he & Allison’s wheelhouse; Mike is likely pretty screwed with the Argentine tango.  Tommy could go either way with the foxtrot – it’s his first “true” ballroom dance, so it will be interesting to see how he fares.  At the top of the leader board? I’m guessing Janel gets rave reviews for her samba, regardless of how good it actually is, because they need her to have a comeback week; I think Sadie will unfortunately be back to getting low balled after finally getting the scores she deserves last week. Ditto for Alfonso – I fully expect him to get nitpicked to death AGAIN, and if he & Witney are going the route I think they are with their salsa, they could be taking a big risk…so I’m bracing myself for the most harsh critique they’ve had yet.  Bethany? One big question mark…this will be her first “intense” dance, which could work for her or against her.

Heidi is currently traveling and has limited computer access, but she wanted to make sure this went up for you guys 🙂 She should be back later tonight with more intel…

ETA: I’m Baaaackkk! With Lea and Artem’s song – and no, it’s NOT the Iggy Azalea version. I also wanted to add that I’ve been rewatching the show and left something out of my numbers post that I wanted to mention. I REALLY appreciate and love how the dancers in the sky box are wearing little tribute costumes to one of their cohorts from time to time. This past week they were all wearing dreadlocks after Tommy’s dance, and this was after they were all imitating Tony after his audition tape was shown.  The previous week they all had beards and duck calls. They show a lot of camaraderie with each other that is fun to watch.  Which makes the judges and their behavior that much more dreadful.  ~Heidi

ETA2: Lots of complaining by Derek fans about his and Beth’s song. Chillax, people. Of all people, he can handle it. And if it doesn’t work? Well, it happens. Jonathan? Much harder to tell how that’s going to go. 🙂 Oh, and if you scrooooooll down, you’ll see Derek and Beth had a special visitor in their rehearsal. ~Heidi

ETA3: We think we know who sings Antonio’s song, but we’re not 100%. Be sure to tune into our Live blog tonight for some potential spoilers for next week. 🙂
