Pure Derek Hough’s Exclusive Interview with Marilu Henner: Derek, DWTS and That Memory

Hey all!  Remember when some of you submitted questions for me to ask Marilu? Well, we finally finished the interview!!  Every single question didn’t get addressed because we were short on time and a few of them were similar to each other, but we got to most of them.  Many, MANY thanks to Marilu for taking the time to talk to me and answer all your questions. She was fun and funny and very engaging.

Note: This interview was conducted over the course of three conversations starting about two (?) weeks ago – just in case there are any timing issues in here.  I’ve put a brief excerpt here – the rest of the interview can be read at www.purederekhough.com.

Olivia: Marilu, I understand that Dancing with the Stars can be very tiring for a lot of people, out of you and Derek, who takes more naps or is caught yawning in rehearsal? Go Team Hennergy!

Marilu: People make jokes about us because we barely take bathroom breaks, we have so much energy together. We often see other couples who take short meal breaks and ask if we’re going to leave as well and we usually say “we just have to get one more thing…”   I’ve never seen him yawn and I never yawn. When we work, we work. Read more..

Maks Chmerkovksiy Gives Advise For Remaining Couples On Dancing With The Stars, Makes Finals Prediction

Maks Chmerkovksiy has written some thoughts and advise for each of the remaining couples at his new blog at Entertainment Weekly. I’m agreeing with everything he’s written except the part on Derek and how he’s not supportive and making an effort with choreo, etc, for Marilu, but, I do agree that she doesn’t seem comfortable and she just needs to have fun. More below including Miss Heidi’s thoughts. Let us know what you think too. Maks also makes a Prediction on who will make the Finals: Laurie, Calvin, and James.

Marilu and Derek:

I think this is the first time we’ve seen Derek in a role he’s not used to. It’s the role of not being the best couple in the competition, nor having a partner who can do things the way he wants her to.

We always see similarities from season to season — all of us pros recycle stuff. Having several years of DWTS experience, we know there are weeks that are easier than others. We know a set of steps that we can put in that will impress, we know a set of lifts that we can put in that will impress, we know some choreography pieces that we can do over and over. I’m not saying this in a bad way at all — it’s just the way it is.

But I think maybe Derek is attempting this and it’s not working. Marilu is a different person than other people he’s worked with. I don’t doubt that he puts an effort into choreography and stylizing the dance and trying to make her look her best. But when he hits a wall and sees that she’s not responding the way he wants her to, I think he just gives up and moves on. She needs something that needs to be styled for her, so Derek’s signature fast footwork doesn’t really work. She needs to be a little bit smoother, and maybe slower action, or different song styles.

To me Marilu seems like she wants this the most — she genuinely loves the show and loves to do this, but it seems like she has zero fun. The look in her eyes as soon as she messed up just seems like she’s not comfortable in the situation. And Derek just doesn’t seem supportive enough. You can get frustrated (believe me, I know this) but then you have to come back and figure it out, work together, and try something else. You change your approach, and sometimes change your own personal style for the benefit of your partner.

Like I said I’m not innocent; I’ve obviously had issues and been frustrated with a partner in this competition, so I get it. But I feel like I’ve come back and adjusted my approach and made the best of a situation. Not everyone comes into the competition being great, but it’s a matter of adjusting to have the best outcome, and more than anything, being professional.

More at Entertainment Weekly.

Heidi: Maks has thought that Derek always had great partners for YEARS. To claim that this is the first time that Derek hasn’t had the best dancer is moronic at best – me thinks Maks still has a hard on for Derek and his only explanation for those six trophies is that “Derek always gets great partners”. Jealous much? Not only has Maks’ read on the show always been WAY off base (and not just about Derek, but in general), but he’s never understood the show and how it works. That much is obvious from his own lack of trophies except that one that was manufactured for him. And that he’s giving advice to DEREK of all people is beyond laughable. Derek is the one who changes tack with all his partners until he finds what works – Maks is the one who is rigid and unbending (that he thinks otherwise is delusional). The proof is in the pudding, dude. But most of all – that he doesn’t acknowledge that the packages don’t tell the whole story – something he’s complained about in the past – is just idiotic. But then…our sources have said that many of HIS packages were accurate because there was nothing good to show. So maybe he’s projecting. 😉

PureDWTS Season 23, Week 8 – Power Rankings

So for those just tuning in that may have missed the producers’ agenda that permeated last night’s episode, let me recap:

1.) Make sure you keep pushing for Jana to make the finals.

2.) DO NOT LET DEREK ANYWHERE NEAR THE FINALS!!!

3.) Create an emotional redemption arc for Laurie, complete with Val crying his eyes out on camera.

4.) Milk the drama of Sharna’s injury, but let Jenna have the spotlight tonight…we need her to happen!!!

5.) Keep Calvin in the running for the finals, but he needs to take a back seat to the others tonight.

The face-offs, just like the ones in season 21, were about as big of a sh*tshow as one could expect – mainly just a means to carry out the agenda of the moment, and pretend to give a sliver of power to the viewers so they can feel like part of the action.  I actually found myself profoundly relieved that James ended up with immunity – judging from his rehearsal package, it looked like he may have lost some rehearsal time learning the two face-off dances he hadn’t already done (jive & salsa), and I was very, very leery of him having to learn them from Jenna, whose teaching skills are…dubious, at best.  So the fact that he ended up not having to attempt them with someone that’s NOT his normal partner? Phew. And really, if they were going to give immunity to anyone, I would rather it be someone that was probably headed to the finale already (and not someone that genuinely needed a boost to stick around), so as to minimize rocking the boat too much – so in the grand scheme of things, I would have been fine with Laurie, James, or Calvin getting it, and oddly enough, they were the only three last night that ended up with perfect scores.

I think I mentioned last week that I was fairly certain that Ryan was on borrowed time – just couldn’t put my finger on when, exactly, the hammer was gonna drop.  Oddly enough, his tango last night was probably my favorite dance he did all season – the Cheryl Burke House of Pain method seemed to work, as he seemed more invested in that dance that any other one we saw from him all season.  It was fun to watch, but it was time for him to go – but overall, I’m actually glad he ended up doing the show, because I think I came out of it with a much better understanding of him.  He generally seems like a good guy, not the calculating type – but is simply too dumb to function sometimes, and that’s what gets him into trouble 😛 And then there were only 2 men, and I’m guessing they’re probably guaranteed a spot in the finals.  Which means we’re most likely gonna lose 2 ladies in the next 2 weeks… Read more..

Ryan Lochte And Cheryl Burke So Thankful For Each Other And DWTS – GMA Interview

Below is Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke on Good Morning America. They talk of how much they mean to each other and how thankful they are for their experience together on Dancing With The Stars. Cheryl even named Ryan as one of her top 5 partners. A great interview that will make you tear it up. I’m so glad Ryan did the show. I’m thankful for his message of fighting back no matter how much others knock you around and that you can begin again under any circumstances if you are willing to take a chance.

PureDWTS Season 23 Week 8 – Media, Scores, And Interviews

I really love “Halloween Week”. The entire Production team of Dancing With The Stars out did themselves again last night. I loved all the dances as well for different reasons. More on that in Court’s new Power Rankings post later. For now, let’s review the scores….

James Hinchliffe and Jenna Johnson/Sharna Burgess: 10-10-10 from the judges for a total of 30.
Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy: 10-10-10 from the judges for a total of 30.
Calvin Johnson, Jr. and Lindsay Arnold: 10-10-10 from the judges for a total of 30.
Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko: 9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 27.
Terra Jole and Sasha Farber: 8-8-8 from the judges for a total of 24.
Marilu Henner and Derek Hough: 7-8-8 from the judges for a total of 23.
Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke: 7-8-8 from the judges for a total of 23. Eliminated

Now onto some media. First, Glamour has a recap and a few media tidbits. Note how it’s “Showstopper’s Week” next.

Below is what Ryan Lochte told People on his elimination. Be watching the link for more interviews later in the day.

“I knew it was going to happen eventually. The people, the friendships that I’ve made here we’re pretty much a second family now. Now I’m saying goodbye, it’s sad. I will be back into weeks for the finale so I can’t say all my goodbyes yet,” Lochte told PEOPLE after being eliminated. “I learned a lot about myself. No matter how hard people knock me down, I can still get up and keep fighting no matter what and keep moving forward and staying positive.”

From Fox News:

Hinchcliffe, who cheated death in a bad car crash last year, tried to take it in stride. He said, “You can worry about things but it’s not going to help the situation. I learned that time and time again in my career. This was the hand we were dealt and we had to make the best of it.”

Still, the driver, who has become close friends with Burgess, was devastated to lose her after seven weeks competing together and commented, “I wasn’t really expecting how different it is to step in with somebody else.” He was grateful Burgess coached him and Johnson the entire way.

Meanwhile, Hernandez brought her partner Val Chmerkovskiy to tears in rehearsal, as he was overcome with emotion about her blossoming on “DWTS.”

They soared again on Monday with a “Willy Wonka” themed Viennese waltz to the song “Pure Imagination.” The two also won their dance off portion of the evening against Johnson.

About her dance, she said, “It felt beautiful,” and shared of her rehearsal moment with Chmerkovskiy, “I was trying not to cry, too. It was interesting. From what I hear, I don’t think Val cries often. It’s great to be able to touch his heart like that.” Hernandez, 16, also announced that her inspirational memoir, “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond,” about achieving her Olympics dream, comes out Jan. 24.

Jana Kramer and partner Gleb Savchenko earned a 27 for their “Little Shop of Horrors'” jazz dance, and Terra Jole and partner Sasha Farber got a 24 for their cha cha. They lost out to Kramer/Savchenko in the dance off. But backstage, Jole was buoyant, telling reporters that next week, “I feel like we’re going to be coming back and kicking some royal tushy.”

More from Fox News…..

Lochte earlier told “DWTS” reporters that he doesn’t care how big the wedding is, saying, “I just want my family and my friends there and she wants the exact same thing so we might keep the wedding small– but the party afterwards is going to be big.”

Now he has plenty of time to make a guest list with Reid—but on Monday, the Olympian still said leaving “DWTS” was tough. “I feel sad. I didn’t want to leave but I knew it was going to happen eventually. The people, the friendships I’ve created are pretty much a second family here that now I’m saying goodbye to. I will be back in two weeks for the finale. I can’t say all my goodbyes [now].

“I learned a lot about myself. No matter how people knock me down I can still get up and I can keep fighting no matter what and keep moving forward and staying positive,” he added.

During the “DWTS” September 12 live premiere, two male audience members rushed the stage towards Lochte as he and partner Burke were receiving judges’ feedback. Studio security guards tackled them before Lochte or his pro were touched in the scary incident.

Other audience members also jeered Lochte for his Rio behavior and were ejected from the ballroom.

The next week, he admitted, “I wanted to quit.”

However, Lochte bravely weathered the storm and made it to week eight, telling reporters “DWTS” helped change his image: “I think my dance did. Throughout the [TV rehearsal footage] packages that go through each dance routine, the different dance types I had and being emotional and you name it. I think America definitely saw a different side of me.”

Don’t miss reading both Fox News links for more. I especially liked how Derek straightened out the reporter on his and Marilu’s package which you can read more on here.

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 8 – LIVE BLOG!!

Happy Halloween!!

Site rules in are effect – don’t hit refresh every 2 minutes, make sure you’re not posting one-liners, etc. Thank you. 🙂

Loved the opening number…especially the outlines on the floor 🙂

Big mention of Sharna – but no mention at all of a missing Derek. He wasn’t in any of the group number rehearsals either…I think Hairspray must have interfered. But he’s not anywhere visible – he’s either practicing with Marilu or he hasn’t gotten there yet. The other explanation is the couples standing on stage after the pro dance was also filmed earlier.

Love Beetlejuice – the dance was pretty good, but Halloween always screws with the dances. I suspect that the judges will use that against the couples when they want to, and won’t when they don’t. Come on, CAI…you think it was too slow?? SHE DIDN’T PICK THE MUSIC!! So stupid.

Sharna apparently told Dominic on All Access that she will “100%” be back on the floor – he said that to James so I assume the context was with James and not in general. And James confirms that it’s 100% Sharna choreo/production.

Val showing a tiny bit of personal growth! Good. But this edit makes me suspect a possible Laurie redemption arc…and I also suspect they’ll use Sharna’s injury to hose James.

Very good dance!! But not worthy of the perfect score that I suspect they’ll get.

Yep, perfect. It will be interesting to see who else gets the 40. And who ends up with immunity.

OH HOOO…they just claimed that the cumulative score will be the deciding factor. A different story from earlier in the season. That means that Jana is out of the running for immunity and it’s between Laurie and James if he gets a perfect score.

Interesting edit they gave to Marilu and Derek – just now mentioning the injury and making it seem like all was fine last week (in terms of the injury).

A couple sync issues at the beginning and then a slight miss at the end, bonking Derek on the head. Choreo was awesome, working with her feet well.

Note, they barely speak to Marilu and Derek after spending eons with Terra and Laurie. Shit adds up. I think a 7 is harsh for that dance…makes me wonder if she is safe.

Love Calvin and Lindsay!! Very good dance, although I saw a sync issue in the middle, not to mention they broke hold in a quickstep. I dug it though.

Hmmmm….interesting. NOW they start scoring him well? After breaking hold and a sync issue? That’s all well and good…I wouldn’t mind if he won…but it’s a bit suspect. I suspect they want several couples with perfect scores for the sake of DRAMA and who will get immunity. :::rolls eyes:::

I can’t help it… I think Ryan is just hilarious. Really liked that dance as well…but I confess I wasn’t watching closely so I can’t say too much more about it.

I will also comment on a fan double standard which I’m finding a bit sexist – the way Derek and Cheryl talk to their partners this season is nearly identical – honest, tough love. But Derek is the only one who gets any shit for it. Is it because Marilu is female that they think she should be treated differently??

Anyway, I would give Ryan a pretty good score…not having watched it closely, granted. 🙂

I’m sure it’s a total coincidence that Ryan and Marilu are tied. :::smirk:::

Relax Gleb…all it really means on DWTS is that you have no rules. Do you WATCH this show? And no way is she the top girl….you forget Laurie?

Did I see a big glaring mistake at the beginning of Jana’s dance?? Again, multitasking too much…

It was also a good dance, but not terribly new or exciting. Will she be over scored? Eh, I guess 9s are okay. She had no shot at immunity anyway, so at least they’re not carrying the pretense that far.

Don’t worry, Sharna – you’ll get by on the sympathy spamming until you’re back. No danger for James, IMO.

Great dance! Should be a perfect score, if Laurie’s was. They cynic in me feels the need to point out that Laurie and James both did V. Waltz and both will probably be perfect. James’ dance was far superior to Laurie’s I think – have to agree with Julianne. Gonna have a hard time deciding who to vote for between James and Calvin in the finale. 😉

Oh, Tom just pointed out before the score that James would get immunity if they get a perfect score. So, no dragging that one out. Thanks Tom. 🙂

NOOOO….Tom, people HAVE TO VOTE for them to keep them safe next week!! He was far to wish washy on that point, it needs to be reinforced. They are not automatically safe next week!

Heh…the pros and celebs worked the dance off out before hand. Is it mean that I felt like Jana would pick Marilu just to ensure a win? 😉

I’m gonna guess that whoever wins the dance off between Ryan and Marilu is the one going home tonight…that way they’re sure to get rid of the other one next week. You heard it here first.

Okay first dance off Calvin versus Laurie – I thought that Laurie and Val were very repetitive in the choreo. Mess up my ass Julianne. Are they going to score this??

Oh shut up, CAI – it’s the cowards way out to pick Ryan. And she acts like she doesn’t know they all worked it out beforehand.

And Laurie and Val win that one…no surprise.

Are they supposed to yield the floor in the middle?? If not, it’s a clever idea to make sure both get attention. Gleb’s turning into a bit of a famewhore with the shirt thing though. I personally thought that Terra and Sasha won that one, but I doubt the judges will give it to them.

No way…Terra was winning the public vote the entire time it was on the screen. Something smells.

:::sigh::: Jana gets the extra points. And remember my prediction from above?? I wonder…

What the hell were Ryan and Cheryl doing off to the side? Looks like Ryan won the audience vote in addition to the judges.

Wow, down to the wire….first couple safe is….Marilu and Derek!! See above for how I called the loser of their dance off being safe.

Next couple safe is…Laurie and Val.

Calvin and Lindsay and Janna and Gleb are both safe, damn it.

Person going home is….Ryan and Cheryl. Very happy for Terra…wish it had been Jana.

I couldn’t choose between Marilu and Ryan going home, while Courtney picked Marilu. Vogue said it was going to be Ryan! She called it right this week.

A note on the numbers…Terra is only one point ahead of Marilu, but it’s almost certain to be one of those two next week because the show has rigged it very, very well to get the couples they want next week, regardless of what the audience may want.

Incidentally, tonight is also an example of why they’re terrified of Derek, as much as they want him to come on every season. Clearly, his fanbase has power. 😉
