Vote for Your Favorites in the PureDWTS Season 14 End-of-Season Awards!!!

 Ok kids, it’s time once again to vote of our biannual “end-of-season” awards…our sort of “wrap up” for season 14, where we see what you guys think were the highs and lows of this season 🙂 If you want to get a feel for how these awards work, you can check out previous seasons’ award recipients here.

First, the rules: I’ve picked what I deem to be the most likely candidates (with the strongest chance of winning) for each category – of course, some of you are going to disagree, and that’s fine.  If you don’t see your pick listed as an option, you can write-in your own nomination in the “other” box.  But here’s my biannual disclaimer about the dreaded “other” box: if I can’t read what you wrote because it’s badly misspelled/grammatically nonsensical/generally incoherent, YOUR VOTE WILL NOT COUNT.  If your response to the question does not make sense (i.e. you simply vote “Donald” for best dance), YOUR VOTE WILL NOT COUNT.  If you simply repeat one of the already listed responses because you can’t be bothered to actually pay attention, YOUR VOTE WILL NOT COUNT.  If you’re just generally being a nudnik and giving harassing responses, YOUR VOTE WILL NOT COUNT.  *shakes head* I still can’t believe that I have to give this spiel twice a year…

…anywho, we’ll give you guys a week to get your votes in, and then we’ll reveal the results in a series of posts starting next week.  Now ready…set…VOTE!!! 😀

DWTS Season 14, Week 9 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

We’re back, after a couple week absence…and some of you will not be happy to see us. 😉  Them’s are breaks…the weeks we missed we’ll pick up as a bit of retrospective cheese once the season is over.

The Award for Biggest Lack of Commitment to Week 9 – The Costuming Department who really screwed Cheryl out of some fringe on her Samba Costume

Heidi: You might ask yourself, “Are ‘biggest’ and ‘lack’ really the two best words to put together?” but really that was what was going through my mind looking at her costume. Yo, dudes, either add the fringe or don’t – you kinda half assed it here, IMO. 🙂 Yep, we’re picking nits.

Courtney: Everything about the show this week was so…blah.  Most of the routines were ho-hum, nobody really said anything interesting, and even the costumes seemed like they were half-assed.  It was as if the costume folks bailed and headed to the bar after only putting half the fringe on her costume.  “Yeah, that’ll do.  C’mon, we can make it for happy hour if we leave now!” Can’t blame them…even I’m bored with the show at this point.

Heidi: Perhaps you and I should win this award. It was pretty damn boring in retrospect. 🙂

The “Most Telling Obsession” Award: Mark Ballas and his fondness for fences

Heidi: Really, dude. You’ve put Katherine in two cages and Bristol in one…is this a comment on how your attitude toward women in general or these two women in particular? 🙂 Or is it just a sexual kink all the way around? 😉 Considering your girlfriend, I’m going with BOTH.

Courtney: I’m sure Freud would have a heydey trying to make something of Mark’s fixation with cages.  Who knows what his true motives are – maybe he wants people to think he’s tough, maybe it makes him feel like he’s in control, maybe he just really wants us to know that he’s very, very into MMA.  I’m just kinda bored with it, to be quite honest.  You know it’s bad when I was actually slightly amused when he put Katherine in a snake basket for their salsa…nice change of pace 😛

Heidi: A cage is a cage even when it’s a basket. 😉

Sherri Shepherd’s Stand Up Piece On Dancing With The Stars And A Teaser For Finale

Did any of you happen to see Sherri Shepherd on the Jay Leno show Friday night? She goes through her whole time on Dancing With The Stars to when Tom Bergeron announced on twitter that it was going to be a “shocking elimination”. She didn’t think it was her being Carrie Anne said she was the “happiest contestant in history on Dancing With The Stars”. She is a hoot in this stand up piece. Check her out.

Stay tuned. As you know, Sherri and Val will be back to dance as well as all of the eliminated couples this week for the finals. Sherri tweeted this picture below of Maks and Tony in rehearsals writing that they were “flying thru the air” her. LOL!! This is going to be good….

Louis Van Amstel, Sherri Shepherd, and Val Chmerkovskiy Review Dancing With The Stars Week 9

In our second media posting today, let’s get Louis Van Amstel’s take on the last night’s dances at ABC. Surprisingly, Louis didn’t think any of the dances last night deserved a “10”. WHA?? Below is his overall opinion. For his individual takes, be sure to visit the link.

Overall: Even though I appreciate Len’s words tonight about this Jive lacking content yet him loving it anyway, in past weeks when people were entertaining but lacked content he would tear them part. That is not fair. I’ve never said this before but tonight all performances were “9s,” in my opinion. Everyone did a good job tonight, but no “10s” for me tonight. The video packages are so heartfelt that it is difficult to criticize the celebrities knowing how much hard work they put into tonight. But honestly it was no one’s best performance. BUT it is fun to know that the mirrorball trophy can be anyone’s this season. And your votes really count this season! With all of these “9s” and “10s,” the viewers’ votes will make the decision.

What do you think? I have to disagree. I thought William’s 2nd dance, Maria’s 1st dance, and both of Donald’s deserved 10’s? He’s spot on about Len and his scoring though. Sometimes he nitpicks and sometimes he doesn’t….or is it favoritism or manipulation?

Next up, Val Chmerkovskiy and Sherri Shepherd were guests on Good Morning America today to review the show and reveal their favorites. I haven’t watched this interview yet since I’m having some connection issues today, but you can watch it here.

Here’s to the results tonight. Prepare for it to be a painful elimination as they are all so good. 🙁

DWTS Season 14, Weeks 5 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

Ta DA!! We’re in catch up mode. 🙂

First – WEEK 5

The “Can’t Carry a Tune in a Bucket” Award: Len and Bruno, for their rendition of either “Maria” or “How Do you Solve a Problem Like Maria”…we can’t be sure. 🙂

Heidi: So, the first time I saw it, I thought they were doing a little West Side Story…the second time I saw it, I’m honestly not sure. Don’t quit your day job, boys…if I can’t tell what you’re going for, you can’t sing. 🙂  If I had to bet, I would call Len Sound of Music and Bruno West Side Story. 🙂

Courtney: Screw musicals…I think we’re giving them too much credit there.  I think they both were just making it up as they went along and just hoping that that the audience was even less educated than they were and would just assume that they were singing a legitimate song…and the fact that they were both doing it might somehow lend creedence to their made-up tune.  Whatever it was…it was dumb.

Brooke Burke Flub O’the Night: “We’ve combined your jokes with the judges scores…”

Heidi: Have you heard the one about the judge who walked into the bar?? He tried to give the barmaid a “10” and….well, I can’t think of a good joke. But does one really need one when Brooke is around? 🙂 In all fairness, she’s been better this season than previously, but her occasional tongue tripping can be entertaining.

Courtney: My aunt used to have this parrot named Joey that would repeat literally ANY word it heard – but it would do it at random times, and sometimes form sentences that weren’t quite coherent, contextually.  I’m beginning to think that Brooke is the reincarnation of Joey, the way she will occasionally swap out the word she intends to use with one she has just heard or thought about 🙂 If so, I fully expect her to start making the skud missile sound effect and start calling people SOB’s by season’s end…can’t wait 😉

The Award for Best Reaction to being Called Safe: Melissa Gilbert – Half-Pint CUSSED!!!! 🙂

Heidi: Hehehehe…loved it. Sweet, quiet Melissa gets bleeped on live television. You go girl. You really CAN take the Prairie out of the girl. 😉

Courtney: And it was a LOOOONG cuss – like a full 5 seconds of the sound being completely bleeped out.  I can only imagine what is was she said…whatever it was, I’m sure I’d be proud 😉 Read more..

DWTS Season 14 Stats Class: Weeks 4 thru 7 Scorecard

So here we are… we are now officially through “two-thirds” of the season and I’ve been updating and cleaning up my spreadsheet, so that way I could create graphs for you to see how the predicted scores compared with the actual scores of the celebrities that have left us since Week 4 (eventually I’ll update the previous scorecard to include graphs for the first few weeks of the season).

In case you have forgotten from the last time, the initials “P – A – D” are simply:
– Predicted: this is the original calculated predicted scores
– Actual: this is the score that the celeb/pro pairing actually received on the show
– Difference: is the point difference between the predicted and actual scores

So if you would recall from Week 4:

I mentioned that there was a 2 point difference with some scores being close/spot on versus scores that were way off. For three weeks Katherine/Mark was getting the largest score difference (5 – 5 – 6) and now they have virtually none.

So far Gavin seems the most steady to history with another zero (0) point difference week.

There also seems to be a shift happening with the largest point difference:
– Roshon/Chelsie: 5 points
– Donald/Peta: 4 points

Did this affect standings of the couples that were in danger on Week 4? Well it depends on how you look at it. Roshon/Chelsie had a massive point difference and they were in the Bottom Two. While Sherri/Val had the average point difference of two and they were sent packing.

Speaking of Sherri, let’s look at how her actual scores on the show compared with the predicted scores over the four weeks she was on the show:

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

DWTS Season 14, Week 5 – How Did We Get THAT Bottom Two??

Back by a little demand, I’ve written a little retrospective on how Jaleel and Gavin ended up in the bottom two…or more accurately, how Gladys and Melissa *didn’t* end up in the duel.  Again, I tend to believe that it’s not that Melissa and Gladys are getting a ton of votes, but they are getting a good number of votes and Jaleel was getting very little votes. In other words, a combination of factors. Gavin is pretty obvious, I think. His score was low enough that he just couldn’t beat the margin. Of course, it’s possible he beat Jaleel…but we’ll never know for sure.

Anyway, Melissa needed roughly 13,400 more votes per million votes cast to beat the margin between her and Jaleel and clearly, she got it.  This I would expect, since Jaleel doesn’t seem to be coming across well to ANYONE, not to mention that she, like others before her, is a TV icon.  I doubt very much she has the fanbase of Kirstie Alley or Jennifer Grey, but she still does have one. She’s also pretty personable and she’s bringing out a good side of Maks.  I didn’t find this surprising in the least.

Gladys?? The woman was third from the bottom – there was no way that Gavin was catching her.  He had a 19 and she had a 22. Here’s what happened for Gladys to be safe; BOTH of the following:

–          Gavin didn’t get 13,400 more votes per million votes cast than Her, AND;

–          Gladys got roughly 8,950 more votes per million votes cast than Jaleel.

Really, it’s that simple. Note that this says nothing about how Melissa is doing against Gladys, because we don’t actually know.   For Jaleel to end up in the bottom two with Gavin, BOTH of the following happened:

–          Melissa got 13,400 more votes per million votes cast than Jaleel did, AND;

–          Gladys got 8,950 more votes per million votes cast than Jaleel did, AND;

Again, this is not terribly surprising to me. We still have no clue about how Gladys and Melissa are doing compared to each other, OR compared to the rest of the celebs, with the possible exception of Roshon.

What about Roshon? How did he escape the bottom two this time after being in the bottom two the week before??  Well, this is where it gets interesting.  At least to me. When Roshon was in the bottom two with Sherri it meant that all of the following happened:

–              Gladys got at least 25,752 more votes per million votes cast than Roshon, AND;

–              William, Jaleel and Melissa ALL got at least 17,167 more votes per million votes than Roshon, AND;

–              Gavin got at least 12,875 more votes per  million votes cast than Roshon, AND;

–              Katherine got at least 8,583 more votes per million votes cast than Roshon, AND;

–              Maria got at least ONE more vote per million votes cast than Roshon.

This past week, Jaleel clearly didn’t cover the spread between him and Roshon, and the spread this past week was 8,930 more votes per million votes cast.  So the spread between them was cut in half and Jaleel is no longer beating Roshon.  So the question is, is Roshon’s stock rising or is Jaleel’s falling. Or is it both? I think that Roshon got a bump from being in the bottom two with Sherri…but I also think that Jaleel is wearing out his welcome.  Jaleel also got a whole bunch of media love this week, from GMA to Wendy Williams to The View. Will it work?? Beats me.

Also keep in mind that this week Gavin needed 31,500 more votes per million votes cast to stay over Roshon. You’ll note, above, when Roshon was in the bottom two the spread between him and Gavin was only 12,875 votes per million votes cast, which Gavin beat to put Roshon in the bottom 2.  So, while the tendency some would have would be to say, “Wow, we did it!! We voted enough to save Roshon,” I would respond and say…not necessarily.  Gavin could have still been getting more votes than Roshon, just not enough more.  He couldn’t beat the spread.

Look at it this way – Roshon gets 40,000 votes, Gavin gets 53,000 votes and Jaleel gets 48,000 votes.  Gladys gets 57,000 votes and Melissa gets 61,000 votes.  Who goes home??  Roshon is the low vote getter, right? But he’s not even in the bottom two in this group.  In this scenario, Gavin and Jaleel are the bottom two (with Gavin going home sans dance duel) – and Gladys and Melissa’s vote totals aren’t that much better, but they are beating the spread needed to beat Jaleel, and Jaleel wasn’t getting the votes to beat Roshon. This is why the bottom two is so misleading. You can easily be the low vote getter and still be safe – it depends on the judges score.

If that sort of scenario continues to play out, and Roshon keeps getting higher scores than Melissa and Gladys, but is lower in voting…he can force Gladys and Melissa into the bottom two by virtue of them not being able to cover the spread.  Roshon’s 40k votes versus Gladys 57k and Melissa’s 61k with similar scores?? Means that one of them is in the bottom two with Jaleel next week.  But ONLY if the votes are similar in scale to what I’ve written above. We don’t know that’s the case – both Gladys and Melissa could be getting more votes than the top four dancers. We’ll find out this week, I imagine.  If there is a double elimination, a real bottom THREE will have to be revealed…so it won’t just be Jaleel and Roshon.  Who will the third person be??

Clear as mud??  🙂

DWTS Las Vegas Odds For April 19th: Do you agree with the odds makers this time?

We usually see a twist in the Las Vegas Odds after another week of dances. This week, however, the Las Vegas odds are relatively the same in comparison to last week’s odds. The only difference is are the numbers slightly. The odds for Jaleel and Roshon have lowered. Also, Roshon and Melissa have switched places which I don’t understand since Roshon is clearly the better dancer? I imagine his fan base isn’t as big? Also note how Donald is in first place this week where he and Katherine were tied for first last week.

This week’s new Las Vegas Odds:

Donald Driver 19/10
Katherine Jenkins 2/1
William Levy 9/4
Maria Menounos 8/1
Jaleel White 25/1
Melissa Gilbert 30/1
Roshon Fegan 30/1
Gladys Knight 100/1

Last week’s Las Vegas Odds:

Donald Driver 2/1
Katherine Jenkins 2/1
William Levy 9/4
Maria Menounos 8/1
Jaleel White 15/1
Roshon Fegan 25/1
Melissa Gilbert 30/1
Gavin DeGraw 75/1
Gladys Knight 100/1

Let’s see what my PureDwts partners in crime think after looking at the new odds for this week? Be sure to tell us what you think too in the comments section.

Courtney: I think the fact that Melissa has been consistently scoring pretty low and still hasn’t fallen into the bottom 2 is confuzzling the oddsmakers 🙂 I don’t think they quite know what to make of her.  At this point, I’d actually put her above both Roshon AND Jaleel, considering those two have actually appeared in the bottom 2 while Melissa hasn’t yet – then again, I’m wondering if they’re trying to anticipate who falls into the dance duel and emerges victorious.  I’m also not so sure I’d give Gladys such long-shot odds – she hasn’t been in the bottom 2, either, and had to get a decent amount of votes in order to overcome Roshon in week 4.  Will she win the whole thing? Probably not, but I don’t think it’s as implausible as these odds imply. But, as with Melissa, I think they’re torn between what the scores & voting so far are telling them and what the judges are likely to do in the dance duel – I actually feel for the oddsmakers in that respect, because the two concepts seem to contradict one another.  Yes, the judges would likely eliminate Melissa and/or Gladys in a heartbeat if they happened to tumble into the bottom 2, but what’s the likelihood that it would actually happen at this point??? The pattern of this season so far seems to indicate that both Roshon & Jaleel falling into the duel next week is a far more likely scenario…or one of them getting eliminated outright and the other duking it out with someone else in the dance duel.   As for the opposite end of the odds…I’m really surprised they actually still have Donald at the top, with even better odds than last week, considering the tongue bath William was given this week, and Donald getting kinda shafted by Len.  Oh well…I have a feeling the odds still have some shifting to do as we approach the finale…

Heidi: I think the odds makers see the same thing we do, in terms of Donald – personality. Like it or not, he also has his football fans behind him whereas William and Katherine MAY be suffering from being relatively unknown. Odds makers are people too. 🙂 They may just see the same things we do and they may also know that the over hyped are usually being over hyped for a reason. That said, and while I think Donald does have the best actual shot of winning,  I think the others could step in and be a surprise.  So much of what happens on this show depends on things other than one or two given dances – the judges tend to rank and their ranking and desire to keep a few out of the bottom is, I think, obvious to everyone.  But once they get down to the core 5 that they think deserve to be there, THAT’S when their true feelings come out. I fully expect Maria and maybe even Donald to start getting a bit of the Ralph treatment to make sure that William, Katherine and Donald are in the final three, with William and Katherine being the final two. But only a bit of the Ralph treatment – it also seems clear to me that the judges got the memo on their treatment of many past contestants because, over all, they have been MUCH nicer this season than any season in recent memory.  And these people aren’t THAT good at dancing.  There ain’t a Nicole in this bunch. And there is no Kristi with the huge fanbase either, I don’t think. That makes things harder. 🙂
