PureDWTS Season 24: ABC Apparently In Talks to Buy “American Idol” – So What Does That Mean For Dancing with the Stars???

This has been on my radar for a few days now, and many of you have tweeted me asking what I thought – well now that I’m not quite as bogged down with my 9-5 and we’re headed into the lull of the weekend, I’m ready to weigh in…

…for those just tuning in, according to TMZ (and a bunch of other reputable sources), ABC is currently in talks to buy the rights to American Idol:

American Idol” has only been off the air a year, but seems it’s still the hottest property out there, because we’ve learned ABC has now made an offer to buy the show.

Sources at ABC and Fremantle — the company that produces the show — tell TMZ the network contacted Fremantle last week and made the bid. We’re told the network wanted to reboot the show for a March 2018 premiere.

Given that they would be aiming for a March 2018 premiere, I think the obvious question is “So…what happens to DWTS, then?” because that would fit the same schedule as a spring season of DWTS.  I don’t think ABC has the carrying capacity for two big-name reality TV competition shows airing concurrently, so I think the most likely scenario is that Idol would take the place of a spring season of DWTS, thereby reducing DWTS to a one-season-per-year show in the fall only, much like Strictly Come Dancing in the UK.

I think Heidi & I have ruminated on the pros and cons of DWTS potentially getting reduced to one season per year for several seasons now, and have determined that the pros would far outweigh the cons – you’d avoid some of the oversaturation viewers seems to be experiencing in recent years, it would allow for more selective casting (fewer spots to fill = more leeway to hold out for better stars), and hopefully the overall quality of the show would go up (fewer seasons = less need to come up with gimmicks to keep things “fresh” all the time). And if the show’s gonna go to one season, they’d be better off eighty-sixing the spring one, which always scores lower in ratings than the fall season – so if reducing DWTS from one season to two is what ABC is aiming to do, I’d say this is their best bet, and is probably a bit overdue, anyway, given the level of f*ckery we’ve seen the last few seasons.

So it’s pretty much a done deal, then, right? We’re in our last spring season of DWTS, and the show’s gonna smoothly transition into a fall-only endeavor?

Not so fast.  There are a few obstacles in place that might prevent all of this from going off without a hitch – the first being that ABC ain’t the only one trying to get their hands on Idol:

TMZ broke the story … NBC and FOX were in a bidding war a few months ago to get the show, but Fremantle stopped negotiating because of squabbling with CORE, co-owner of ‘A.I.’

Our sources say Fremantle is going back to CORE to see if they can agree to negotiate with ABC, and go back to NBC and FOX.

Apparently NBC was also looking to snap Idol up, and in a move that doesn’t quite make sense to me, FOX was trying to nab them, too (so…why did they let them go in the first place, then?).  And understandably, Freemantle is  probably trying to hold out for the best offer. There’s also the minor issue of Ryan Seacrest’s return as host being nary impossible at this point:

We’re also told ABC inquired about making Ryan Seacrest the host, but even last week the network knew it was on the verge of signing Ryan as co-host of ‘Live’ with Kelly Ripa. As a result, we’re told ABC asked if the show could be shot in New York, which is now Ryan’s home base. Our sources say Fremantle made it clear … NYC was a no-go. The show will be shot in L.A.

We’re told Ryan hasn’t been approached by ABC about hosting the show and our ABC sources say it’s virtually out of the question, given his commitment to ‘Live.’

While Idol certainly COULD go on without Seacrest, part of me wonders if part of the appeal for ABC in picking up Idol is to have a show that already comes with a ratings-guaranteed fanbase – a fanbase that sorta hinges upon certain constants on the show, such as Seacrest hosting, having certain judges, etc. Since the show would likely be up against The Voice in its time slot, I’m thinking ABC wants a guaranteed ratings-grabber – and while the format of Idol may be a successful one, I’m not sure how much rebooting can be done before you run the risk of running some of the longtime Idol fans off. ABC may run into similar problems trying to cast judges – if they’re trying to pick up some of the old standbys, they could run into issues trying to book J.Lo and Harry Connick Jr., who are both contractually obligated to NBC these days (J.Lo for Shades of Blue and World of Dance, Harry for his daytime talk show, Harry). I don’t know how realistically affordable Simon Cowell would be, anyway, but he’s also kinda committed to NBC via his involvement on America’s Got Talent.  Paula’s a judge on So You Think You Can Dance on FOX. It doesn’t look like Randy Jackson or Keith Urban are committed to any other major networks, but are they enough to hold together a judges’ panel with 1-2 other new judges? And perhaps a new host?

My doubts about those last few items makes me think that, unless ABC can win the bidding war for Idol AND manage to book some of the old favorites from the series, we’re going to continue seeing a spring season of DWTS until ABC can find another suitable replacement – because even though DWTS’ ratings might be declining, they’re still a ratings juggernaut for ABC, and have been consistently beating The Voice in total viewers for a few seasons now. I don’t see them dumping that kind of success unless they can find something that’s going to be a guaranteed hit, right out of the gate – and I’m not sure there’s a whole lotta shows out there that are gonna fit the bill. But the very fact that they appear to be looking? Tells me that DWTS could be in a bit of trouble…not “cancel it completely” trouble – yet – but certainly “Do we really need two seasons a year instead of just one?” trouble…

…what are your thoughts, though?

Simon Cowell as a Guest Judge on MY DWTS?? New Interview with New EP Rob Wade

Not on my DWTS, please. He’s one of those guys who thinks he knows everything about everything but really doesn’t know all that much about anything. But hey, if you’re hot, you’ll be a hit whether you can sing…I mean dance, or not. But really – how funny would it be if Simon got to be Guest judge and Maks didn’t?   From The TV Page:

Usually when they bring a new boss into a show it is so they can shake it up…
Yeah, but this time it is not.  The show did really great last season.  Quite early on in the season, Conrad who was the EP decided to leave.  He had done 18 seasons.  He decided he wanted a new challenge.  So in this case the show is doing great and we have to be really respectful of the format.

So how are you going to put your stamp on the show?
Look, viewers love the show.  I would be a fool to go in there and say, “I want to put my stamp on this.  I am going to go in there and shake things up.”  But there are a couple of significant changes that I am in the process of making that I think people will notice.

How many judges do you think will be on the panel?
For the moment, we are looking at three.  There is a possibility for a fourth.  We are talking about that possibility.  But we have to see.  I think you have just got to get the right mix of people.  I think Bruno (Tonioli) , Len (Goodman) and Carrie Ann (Inaba) are brilliant.  Certainly wouldn’t lose any of them…

Dancing With The Stars Len Goodman Talks Of Simon Cowell, The Lottery, His Dance Studio, And More

This is cool! If you go to watch News Shopper, you can Dancing With The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman visiting the Silver Song Club in Northfleet, England. He checks out the National Lottery funding to see how it benefits people who are struggling and sings (lol). You can also link to read a new interview where he mentions X Factor’s Simon Cowell and how he’d like to see Simon dance on Strictly Come Dancing. He doesn’t mention Dancing With The Stars, but, says he will be will returning to judge for the Fall season of Strictly Come Dancing. Below is a little take….

The dance coach, who owns The Len Goodman Dance Centre in Dartford, confirmed he would be back on the Strictly judging panel in September, but could not reveal the much-speculated line-up.

He said: “They never tell us who are going to be the celebrities until they tell everyone, which is a good thing because if I knew I’d be telling you.

“They always seem to come up with a terrific cast of celebrities; you get some good ones and some funny ones. I can’t wait.”

And he said the ultimate booking would be his TV-ratings rival, the Britain’s Got Talent and X Factor supremo.

He said: “The dream person on it would be Simon Cowell.

“If he came on it, I’d go on X Factor.

Lots more at the News Shopper including some thoughts about where he lives in England and his dance studio.

Demi Lovato To Perform On Dancing With The Stars Next Week, Returning To XFactor

According to MTV, singer Demi Lovato will be performing on Dancing With The Stars next week. For those interested, she’s also returning to the X Factor next season (yikes, I was kind of hoping she wouldn’t be returning. I like her music, but, not her as a judge). Below is more…

Demi Lovato might be giving your heart a break, but she has no plans to take a break from “The X Factor.” On Thursday (March 28), Simon Cowell confirmed that the singer will be back for the third season of the Fox reality show, marking her second season on the series.

“I couldn’t be happier that Demi wants to come back this year. She’s a superstar in her own right and was a fantastic mentor last year. Even though she can be really, really annoying — I truly enjoyed working with her and so did the artists,” he said in a statement, Deadline reports. “I’m especially pleased she’s back even during her world tour!”

In addition to her world tour and returning to the show, Lovato is slated to release a new studio album later this year, already filming a music video for lead single”Heart Attack.” She will appear on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Dancing With the Stars” next week (Monday and Tuesday, respectively) to perform the tune on TV for the first time.

Keeping An Eye On Former Dancing With The Stars Alumni And New Gig On The X Factor

This story raised one of my eyebrows this morning being several of our almuni from Dancing With The Stars are being considered for the new co-hosting job on the X-Factor this fall. As you know from our previous reports, several of the names listed below have either teased about returning, mentioned they aren’t sure about returning, and/or have been rumored to be dancing again on Dancing With The Stars during this same time period. Read below to see what I mean. If one or several of them are picked, does this mean they are out for the new season of Dancing With The Stars? From Entertainment Weekly. Look for our Miss Heidi’s thoughts after you read this.

Simon Cowell doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice.

The X Factor chief is taking his own sweet time finding the ideal host for the second season of the Fox version of his hit show. Unlike last year, when host-bot Steve Jones handled the show solo, Cowell wants two people for the gig this fall. And instead of having a host on the singing competition from the very start, the audition rounds (which are already being shot) will be host-free. “I want to work with a boy and girl and I definitely think this is a role for two people,” Cowell recently told reporters. “[We] have narrowed it down to 5 people.”

Some names we’re hearing are under consideration: BET personality Rocsi Diaz, actor and America’s Best Dance Crew host Mario Lopez and actress/model Stacy Keibler. Add to that some names E! Online is hearing: Khloé Kardashian, Kelly Osbourne, BET’s 106 & Park host Terrence J, sportscaster Erin Andrews and radio personality Mike Catherwood (more names below).

Sources emphasize that prospective hosts are still being interviewed and actual testing for the gig is not expected for several more weeks. “They want to make sure the duo has chemistry,” one insider said.

Heidi: Reeeaalllyyy…at least Steve was nice to look at…the ONE time I watched the show. 🙂 Call me crazy, but I don’t think ole Simon is going to be able to duplicate the success he’s had in the UK with this show. And really, dude, “boy and a girl?” These are all grown ass people you’re talking about here!! And guess what? You’re not making me any more inclined to watch the show. You’ve managed to pick some of my least favorite DWTS people, with the exception of Kelly. Erin Andrews? No. Although I did hear that she’s quit her ESPN gig….or something like that. To claim that I follow Erin’s activities would be over stating it tremendously. Oddly enough, out of this group, I think I would like Khloe best. Crazy right? Khloe and Mike?? Could be awesome…or so trainwrecky as to be a blast to watch. 😀

As to Vogue’s question about if doing XF rules them out for All Stars – most definitely, I would say. It might be in the studio next door, and they would likely have plenty of time…but DWTS hasn’t crossed network lines before for their “stars” so I don’t see them starting now. Unless desperate. 🙂

I guess the real question is…is EW full of crap or have they got a legit source on all this??

DWTS Bruno Tonioli On Judging, The Price Of Fame, Being Bullied, And More!

The Daily Mail has a great new article and interview up with Dancing With The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing Judge Bruno Tonioli. It’s centered mostly around his Strictly Come Dancing role, but, there is also a mention of how he will be returning for Season 14 of Dancing With The Stars. Bruno also dishes about being bullied when he was little because of being homosexual. Below is more of him talking about it and how fame and his busy schedule between the two dance shows have prevented him from finding a new partner. He also talks of being “very private” (which surprises me a little for how flamboyant he is on Dancing With The Stars).

One thing Bruno’s uncompromising schedule has not allowed time for is a boyfriend. The openly gay dancer has been single since splitting from a long-term partner during the early days of Strictly. Given his success, he must get a lot of offers?

‘No I don’t. Absolutely nothing. Do you have any suggestions for me?’ How about the internet? Bruno explodes. ‘I’m not going to sit on the b****y internet! Are you kidding me? I’m very private. I’m not even on Facebook.’

He believes his fame has made it more difficult to find a partner, because potential suitors expect him to have his bubbly judging persona on all hours of the day. ‘Simon Cowell said to me, “It’s because you’re stroppy.” Maybe he’s right, not that he can talk! But I am very direct, that’s the problem. People see me on TV and think I’m something, but in reality I can be quite blunt.’

Bruno has known he was gay since he was ten, and was often beaten up over it while growing up in Ferrara in north-east Italy. It was something he never discussed with his bus-driver father Werther or seamstress mother Fulvia. Today, he says the fact he could openly flirt with Harry Judd about his ‘amazing six-pack’ on Strictly shows how far attitudes have come. ‘Things have advanced enormously, especially thanks to TV. But it’s the grassroots that have to change. There are still a lot of kids who kill themselves because of bullying.’

An interesting read! Be sure to read the full article at The Daily Mail as he talks of being compared to Simon Cowell as a judge (I think he’s meaner than Simon, but, I still like him. What do you think?) as well and lots more.

DWTS Season 10 Rumors, Speculation and Other Random Stuff

My oh my – we are barely done with Season 9 and the Season 10 speculation starts to crank up. 🙂

First up – Jermain Dupre is telling people he would be interested in doing Dancing with the Stars. I’ve seen this one for a couple days now and took it as just talk. I still think it’s “just talk”, but I figured I would post it in the “you just never know” category. From Access Hollywood via some site called DimeWars:

Any Amazing Race fans out there besides me and John? 🙂 Well, one of the Globetrotters who just got eliminated from the race is saying HE wants to do DWTS – his nickname is Flight Time. Keep in mind that both Flight Time and Jermaine are likely just making it known they would do it if they were to be asked and I think we’re WAY too far out at this point to say this is anything more than wishful thinking on their parts. From the LA Times:

He may not have won the $1 million, but could “Amazing Race” also-ran Herbert “Flight Time” Lang be redirecting his competitive sights to a shiny Mirrorball trophy instead?

The just-eliminated Flight Time (pictured, left), of the “Race’s” popular Harlem Globetrotters team of Flight Time and Big Easy, cracked open the possibility of outfitting himself in glittery face decals and sequins when asked by EW.com if there was a chance that he could show up on another reality show. “I feel like I can do anything now,” he responded. “I enjoy watching ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and I think I’m a pretty good dancer.”

Flight Time and Big Easy

I would love it – these guys were the best sports, played a great game and they never got upset, or fought. They were very entertaining. I say yes. 🙂

Now, addressing the rumor that either Maks or Karina could be sitting in the audience next season, Maks, Karina and ABC all say it’s not true. According to Entertainment Weekly:

According to a source at ABC, “The casting of professionals is determined by the casting of the celebrities, which is still in progress.” Chmerkovskiy’s rep corroborated: “Maks has a contract that goes beyond season 10. As to if he’s coming back or not for next season, that always depends on casting.” Smirnoff’s rep called the one-or-the-other rumor “malicious,” and added, “Karina loves being on Dancing With the Stars and has a professional working relationship with Maksim. I can assure you that she has every intention of returning in the spring.”

Yeah, neither dancer is going anywhere. With each passing season, the pros are bigger stars (and bigger initial draws) than most of the celebrities. ABC will do anything to hold on to the top tier pros AND if they fight it just means better ratings and more attention. Controversy is cash. Derek is fond of saying “Well, if they cast all 6 foot tall women, then Mark and I are out.” While not necessarily true, it’s reasonably accurate – that said, I got 100 buck they make sure they have a couple shorter women in there. 🙂 Although…Derek didn’t give that stock answer the most recent time he was asked….hmmmm….hold me, I’m getting scared.

🙂

Speaking of Derek – I just found out one of the things he’s doing in the off season. A pretty high profile choreography gig! He’s choreographing Cheryl Cole’s next single off her hit album in London. Cheryl Cole is a judge of the British show The X-Factor (created and also judged by Simon Cowell). She is also huge in England (and Europe?) as a recording artist and got started in a group called Girls Aloud on Pop Stars (English version of American Idol). Derek talks about his gig in this video I posted on PureDerekHough – he’s at the 10 minute mark.

Finally, I don’t know that I mentioned this before, but congratulations to Kym Johnson for her Broadway Debut in Burn the Floor!! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer girl! She’s dancing with Maks who returns to the show after a successful run in the late summer. From Theater Mania:

Kym Johnson isn’t exaggerating when she says the last week of November was “the craziest week of my life.” On Tuesday, November 24, she and her celebrity partner, Donny Osmond, were crowned champions of the ninth season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and on Friday, November 27, she made her Broadway debut in the dance extravaganza Burn the Floor. TheaterMania recently spoke with Johnson about these significant events and her plans for the future.

TM: Is this your first time doing Burn the Floor?
KJ: I was in the original workshop in 1998, and then I toured with it for six years — we even did Radio City Music Hall. But it’s definitely changed a lot; it was more of an arena-style show in the past. Now, it’s much more intimate. I also had to learn all new choreography; but since I am really familiar with Jason Gilikson’s style, it wasn’t so hard.

TM: You’re appearing in the show with your Dancing with the Stars co-star Maksim Chmerkovskiy. What is that like?
KJ: We’re good friends, so it’s nice to be dancing with him every night. And no offense, but on Dancing, you don’t dance fully with another professional, so I am really enjoying this. Plus, on the show, I had to choreograph all the numbers and come up with songs, costumes, and all that. It’s nice that I don’t have to keep thinking every minute and I can just dance.

TM: What was your reaction when you found out your partner was going to be Donny Osmond?
KJ: The dancers are always playing guessing games before they tell us who our partners are, and I think everyone was jealous. I had a good feeling from the beginning; I knew he was dedicated and would give everything. His work ethic is so professional.

TM: What was your off-stage relationship like?
KJ: Donny is the nicest man; he had a smile on his face every day. He used to give me singing lessons on our lunch break, which was a real role reversal. He would bully me into singing, and I’d bully him into dancing. He thinks I have a good voice. He tells me I should do it professionally. We’ll see.
