Good Morning America Does A Cover On Dancing with the Stars Live In Las Vegas (Video)

This is so good! If you missed it yesterday morning, Good Morning America had a great segment on the Dancing With The Stars Live show in Las Vegas. They show clips from the show. You can see Lacey Schwimmer, Kyle Massey, Dmitry Chaplin, Carson Kressley, and more dancing. Cameron Mathison also interviews some of the cast and claims he’s “still got it” too. Note: there’s a funny bit with Tia Carrere about her time dancing with (long haired) Maks too. Don’t miss it and more below!

Also, and as most of you know, our John personally attended the opening show. He also attended the pre and after events. If you haven’t read about how he had an encounter with Tom Bergeron and Conrad Green, you can do so here. Stay tuned as John is planning to post more on this event soon for what he experienced.

Encounter with Tom Bergeron, Conrad Green, and More at Dancing with the Stars Live Las Vegas

I’m sure that Princess Heidi, Vogue, and Courtney have been wondering and waiting for me to finally get around to posting about the Dancing with the Stars Live Las Vegas event. I apologize for the delay. Needless to say that it was a night to remember.

I think I’ll save comments on the show itself for another post and just include some of the pre and post party entertainment in this post. Although, it’s worth mentioning that Dancing with the Stars Live Las Vegas was incredibly well designed and wonderfully executed. I actually plan to go and see it again. I hope the show does really well and gets extended for a really long run. Las Vegas needs a ballroom show. So, go and buy some tickets for DWTS Live Las Vegas. Looks like it’s already been extended through July 7th.

Now, to the pre-show festivities. I showed up quite early to the Tropicana to meet my friend for dinner. We chose to eat at the delicious Bacio inside of the Tropicana. We ate at a table that was basically out in the main hallway. Turns out that it was the perfect table. As we sat their eating our dinner we saw almost every star and DWTS pro pass by. If I was in full paparazzi mode I’d have pulled out the video camera and gotten some footage. Although, I just felt creepy doing that. Sorry guys. It’s just not me. I would recommend you doing the same if you go to the show. I bet you’ll see many pass by before the show since the hotel tower is down that hall and I’m sure many of the stars and pros are staying in the tower.

After enjoying the dinner and Dancing with the Stars gazing, I headed over to the pre-party for the show. Yep, there was a pre-party cocktail hour and then a post-party at the club in the Tropicana. I wasn’t sure who would be at the pre-party, but it turns out a bunch of the DWTS pros that were attending the premiere stopped by.

Probably the most popular person at the pre-party was Tom Bergeron. When I saw him, I knew I had to get a picture with him to make Princess Heidi jealous. In fact, I think I told him as much. Tom seemed to respond fine to the idea of him being her boyfriend.

If you take a look at the photo, many of you might not recognize the man in the middle (I’m the one on the left and Tom is on the right of course). At first I wasn’t sure who he was either, but after talking for a minute with Tom and him I correctly guessed him as Conrad Green, executive producer of Dancing with the Stars. He was shocked when I asked him if he was Conrad Green saying something like I surely didn’t recognize his face. I’ll admit that I was pretty lucky since I’m usually terrible with names.

The great part of meeting Tom and Conrad was that I mentioned Pure DWTS and they both knew about the site. It sounded like Tom had seen our work on Twitter before and Conrad seemed to know the site really well. In fact, he mentioned that the thing he loved most about Pure DWTS is that we were real fans of the show as opposed to other media outlets that are just trying to file a story.

Conrad also paid Pure DWTS a great compliment when he told me that he was always amazed at how good Pure DWTS was at predicting the partners for the upcoming season of DWTS. He then kind of hypothesized out loud that it kind of made sense that we could do it so well since we go through a similar process to what they do in matching partners. Of course, we all already knew that this is basically what they were doing when they paired up the couples. If I was quicker on my feet I would have suggested that Pure DWTS could help him with the pairings if he wanted. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Live Show in Las Vegas

Vogue posted about the Dancing with the Stars Live Las Vegas show previously, but we’re starting to get more and more details about the show. So, I thought I’d do a little update post. The show is starting with a 12 week run beginning Saturday, April 14 and you can see all the specific show dates and times on tickemaster. I love the idea of a permanent DWTS Las Vegas show even better than a Dancing with the Stars tour which they’ve done in the past.

Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas is being directed by Amy Tinkham and choreographed by Jason Gilkison (you might know him from So You Think You Can Dance). The show will run 80 minutes and will be at the Tropicana Las Vegas. I think the Tropicana Theater is a great place for the DWTS show in Las Vegas.

Dancing with the Stars alums that will be featured in the opening run, include Carson Kressley, Joey Fatone, Kyle Massey, Sabrina Bryan, Tia Carrere, Dmitry Chaplin and Lacey Schwimmer. They’ll also have a “Las Vegas Troupe” dancing with them in the show. From the pictures we’ve seen on Twitter and embedded below, we can see Iveta Lukosiute, Anya Garnis, Ryan DiLello, Jaymz Tuaileva, Armen Way, and Janette Manrera. We think Artem Chigvintsev and Pasha Kovalev might be in the troupe as well, but can’t quite tell from the picture. (Note: Props to Courtney for identifying many in the pictures) Quite a few past So You Think You Can Dance and Burn The Floor dancers in the troupe, but with Jason Gilkison involved it makes a lot of sense.

Tickets are on sale NOW and range from $40 – $89 plus tax and applicable fees. VIP packages are also available for $165 and include a top-price table seat on the floor, exclusive Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas merchandise and a post-show meet and greet and photo opportunity with the cast. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.

The best news of all. This Friday I’ll be seeing the DWTS Las Vegas show! I’ll see if I can get some pictures and video from the show and possibly before or after.

DWTS Derek Hough And Nappytabs Become Official Board Members Of The DizzyFeet Foundation

Take a look at these two tweets below. Derek Hough and Nappytabbs (choreographers that help with So You Think You Can Dance and who helped with Derek’s new movie, Cobu3D) announced they are official board members of the DizzyFeet Foundation. The DizzyFeet Foundation was founded in 2009 by Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, and Katie Holmes. Their mission is “to support, improve, and increase access to dance education in the United States.” In doing so, they help to “(1)provide scholarships to talented students studying at accredited dance schools, studios, or institutions; (2)establish national standards for dance education and an accreditation program for dance schools in all of the major styles of dance; and (3)develop, provide, and/or support dance education programs for disadvantaged children through and with local community organizations”. You can read more on their work at the DizzyFeet Foundation.

I am officially a DizzyFeet Foundation Board Member. Look forward working with a great group of people to help the arts .

As Heidi said privately, what an “interesting venture” for Derek to take… and a ‘giving back’ one as well!!!

In other Derek things, don’t miss visiting Pure Derek Hough when you get a chance. Heidi has posted some more Cobu3D instagrams of Derek. They are so good, they are iconic in my opinion!

DWTS More Coverage Of Casa Dorada’s New Year’s Eve Barefoot Formal (Photos, Video)

The Zaring Group has sent us some awesome photos from Casa Dorada’s New Year’s Eve Barefoot Formal which, as most of you know from previous reports, took place in Cabo San Lucas this past weekend. Performers from three different reality shows, “Dancing with the Stars,” “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance” collaborated to entertain guests at Casa Dorada’s New Year’s party.

The event was hosted by Mary Murphy (“So You Think You Can Dance” judge) and featured performances and entertainment by “Dancing with the Stars” Louis Van Amstel, Anna Trebunskaya, Jonathan Roberts, Chelsie Hightower, Dmitry Chaplin; “American Idol’s” Michael Johns, Melinda Doolittle, Rickey Smith, LaToya London; “So You Think You Can Dance’s” Allison Holker and Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss.

According to The Zaring Group, everyone sang Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” to close out the night and welcome in 2012 with a fireworks display over the Sea of Cortez.

Casa Dorada’s New Year’s Eve Barefoot Formal was produced by The Zaring Group. The stage show was presented by Jay D. Schwartz and Louis Van Amstel, with Louis choreographing as well as performing.

The photos below of Allison and tWitch, Jonathan, Chelsie, and Dmitry were taken by Enrique Morales. The photo with Anna and Louis was taken by Omar Wrtiz/Fernando Lugo.

Special thanks to Kathy of The Zaring Group for taking us there up close and personal!!

Also, below is a fun video of Chelise, Dmitry, and Stephen tWitch Boss performing and dancing to “Moves Like Jagger”. Thanks to the Dmitry Dream Team at facebook for the find.

I think I know where I’d like to go next New Year’s if they hold this event again! How about you? :)

ADDING: You can view another performance HERE of Jonathan Roberts, Mary Murphy, Dmitry Chaplin, Louis Van Amstel and Chelsie Hightower dancing to Melinda Doolittle and LaToya London’s “Proud Mary”.

Dmitry Chaplin Talks About Dancing With The Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Fashion, And More

MF Magazine has a great new interview up with Dmitry Chaplin. He talks of his experiences on So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars and how much he has learned from each of them. Of Dancing With The Stars, he described it “as one of the most exciting and memorable experiences ever!” He hopes to come back as a “regular pro” for future seasons. All this and more below. Be sure to read the link for the full story for what he says on fashion and how he keeps in shape, etc.

Okay, let’s move back to your performances. Tell me about your days on Dancing With The Stars.
I really enjoy my experience on Dancing With The Stars because not only do I get to meet and dance with different celebrities, but I find the whole process from putting the choreography together and teaching your partner to dance, picking the music, costumes, and then performing live in front of 22 million people every night as one of the most exciting and memorable experiences ever! This show has made an incredible impact on people around the world and changed the industry completely! I received some very touching emails from people around the world telling me how watching us dance has made a huge impact on their lives and that dancing has given them a new hope and inspiration!

Wow, that’s awesome. Ya think any more seasons on the horizon for you after this past one then?
I hope that I get a chance to come back to the future seasons as one of the regular pros on the show and that I can continue to enjoy my dancing career as I’m doing it now!

Was your schedule strenuous and exhausting though?
There are a lot of responsibilities when you have a celebrity partner and it takes a lot of time to turn them into a dancer! I always try to find their best qualities and then try to showcase them on the dance floor. If they have a fun personality I try to have them do some exciting moves so they could really connect to the dance. If they have good lines like Petra for example, I definitely try to give them some lyrical moments that will make us stand out! In reality it takes some time to learn about your partner and make them trust you, so rehearsal hours can be very long…

How did you balance your personal life and other obligations during that time?
I pretty much don’t have any time for my personal life when I’m on the season. The schedule is so packed that I would literally leave my apartment at 8am and get home around 10pm and by that time you don’t feel like going out or doing anything else but going to bed. (He laughs.)

Louis Van Amstel Talks So You Think You Can Dance And Dancing With The Stars

Wetpaint has a great new interview up with Louis Van Amstel. As some of you know, he’s been currently helping to choreograph some routines for So You Think You Can Dance. According to our Heidi in the Emmy post, Louis choreographed “two kickass dances” that were “strict and difficult ballroom”. What’s more, she said his work was “better than anything he’s done on DWTS in YEARS.” Of the experience in the new interview, Louis said….

You also choreographed for So You Think You Can Dance recently. How do you find choreographing for So You Think You Can Dance compared to Dancing With The Stars?
It’s different… This week on So You Think You Can Dance it was very challenging. They had never done Tango, ever. So I thought, you know what, you’re going to have to rise to the challenge. I am not going to make it easier… If you have trained dancers that are out of their comfort zone, it is a completely different challenge than someone who has never danced before, where you have to just teach them how to dance. It’s different, but I love both, I absolutely love both.

Stay tuned because Chelsie Hightower will be helping with So You Think You Can Dance next week for one show.

Louis also talks about Dancing With The Stars. I didn’t realize he had taught many of the current pros on the show.

Before Dancing With the Stars you worked with a lot of the pros who are now on the show as their coach, right?
Yes. ABC doesn’t talk a lot about that, but yes, I couched ninety percent of the dancers on the show right now.

What has it been like to watch your pupils become your colleagues and co-stars on DWTS, which is a huge phenomena?
Now it’s great, but in the beginning — let’s say between Season 3 and Season 10 — there were conflicts. You get the dynamic that I had been the coach then [before the show], but now I’m not. And then some [of the pros] feel, in their minds, that they’re more celebrated than others, and others feel that now they want to compete with me. I’m not doing Dancing With the Stars to compete with someone else. My job is to develop, and create a journey for my celebrity, so that I can truly help my partner and make her as good as I can. And when we do group numbers, it’s to create the best number for the show, because we want to entertain. So, there had been conflict…

But now, in the last two seasons, the pros have now found their own self, and their own route, and their own niche, and it’s really good. I think people see it, and the celebrities feel it, and the celebrities have more camaraderie, and we all help each other.

A lot of pros have started to branch out into other projects, and seeing success there. Do you think that’s part of why they’re less competitive on the show itself?
If you’re very competitive by nature, in the end, there is some insecurity there. If you’re insecure about yourself, you focus on your product, your dancing, your art. You have to be pretty secure about who you are as a person to be able to say, “I’m not trying to put you down, or beat you, I am just focusing on my heart.” It’s not easy to do, sometimes.

Ineresting. Be sure to read more of this interview >>>>here. Louis also talks of his past partners on Dancing With The Stars. Note: Louis will be on “Drop Dead Diva” with Margaret Cho on Sunday, July 17th at 9:00pm ET on Lifetime if you want to check it out. Below is a hint of what’s to come….

DWTS Search Engine Round-Up – Week of June 24, 2011

Sorry this is kinda late, kids – I’ve been caught up with end-of-quarter stuff at work, and have been spending more time at the office than I have at home, I’m afraid.  But things ought to let up a bit after next week, so look forward to some more fun posts headed your way ;-) I gotta admit – it’s getting harder and harder to write this each week, because we’re currently in the summer doldrums between seasons where we’re not getting as many hits as we do when the show is in-season…and fewer hits usually means fewer unique terms getting searched.  So just a warning – this may become a bi-weekly feature in the future, if I can’t get enough good material for it.

Season 12 ratings

A quick search of “ratings” in the search bar will pull up all of the ratings posts, but here’s a link to the last one of the season.  Vogue posts them each week during the season, just so we can see how DWTS is stacking up against all the other shows.  They’re almost always in the top 5, but it is kinda cool to see how certain events on the show (say, “American Night” or the winner-take-all cha-cha) can affect the ratings for a particular week.

Kyle Petty recent photos

Erm, I’d say his website would probably be the best source for that.  I was stumped as to how some of you ended up here looking for pictures of Kyle, until I did a search and realized Shawn Johnson rode along with Kyle for a few laps at the Coca-Cola 600 back in May of ’09 after winning DWTS.  I wouldn’t mind Kyle doing the show – we haven’t had anyone from the racing world since Helio, and Kyle would be the first Nascar representative to do the show.  What do you guys think?

What were Maks & Cheryl paid for dancing at the Southwest Airlines 40th Anniversary party?

A bajillion, fafillion, sho0-bad-ooh-wopillion dollars. *pinky to corner of mouth like Dr. Evil* Honestly, I don’t know…none of us know, with the exception of Maks, Cheryl, the folks at Southwest accounts payable, and the IRS. I’m sure it was a pretty penny…most well-known ballroom pros can command several grand for private exhibition performance.  DWTS pros can probably command even more.  I’m guessing at least $15K each.

So You Think You Can Dance songs list 2011

Head on over to Pure SYTYCD for that…if you are still watching the show after the sham that was Iveta’s elimination the other night. It’s safe to say I’m pretty salty about it – it’s only week 2 and already the sole ballroom dancer this season is gone, along with the only true tapper.  I know a lot of us were talking about it on Twitter, and the topic came up of Iveta doing DWTS.  While I love Iveta, I don’t wanna see it happen – she’s just so damn good, and I almost feel like doing the show would be a waste of her talent.  Then again, maybe her talent would be better appreciated on DWTS than it was on SYTYCD.  I’m beginning to think they’re intimidated by ballroom dancers over there…

Mark Ballas gay

Hehe.  *shaking head* Sorry, couldn’t resist that one.  I’m guessing this musing sprung from the interview Mark did where he said he wouldn’t mind having a same-sex partnership, and the subsequent discussion we had about the implications of said statement.  If he is indeed gay, he’s doing a pretty damn good job of concealing it, considering the bevy of babes he’s been linked to since starting DWTS.  There was Sabrina…and Joanna Pacitti…and I think one of the Pussycat Dolls…and then there was Jeanine…and the Bristol rumors…and the Chelsie rumors…and then the other other Chelsea…which brings us to Pia, the current girl du jour.  If he is gay, he’s got a whole wardrobe of beards to chose from :-) Honestly, if nothing else, I think Mark’s stance on same-sex ballroom says less about his sexual orientation and more about his need for attention. You know that box on facebook that says “interested in” and you choose “men”, “women” or “both”? They’d need to add one for Mark – “attention of any sort”. :-D

Back in town jive song

I think you’re referring to “The Boys are Back in Town” by Thin Lizzy, the song that Mike & Lacey jived to.

Bristol Palin book

I’d personally rather use it as a doorstop than summer reading material, but there’s a few excerpts from it in a post Vogue did earlier this week.  Overall, it just sounds like a bitter, sensationalized attempt to prolong her 15 minutes of fame a bit more – she takes some cheap shots at her fellow contestants and her baby daddy, and seems hellbent on reminding us about the “hefty check” she got for doing DWTS.  I don’t think I’ve ever heard another celeb talk about the money they made on DWTS as much as Bristol.  And Bristol, honey, no matter how easy or irresistable it might be – don’t Hassle the Hoff.  You may just get yourself labeled persona non grata in Germany…and what would that do for your political aspirations? Tsk, tsk.

Derek Hough little toe

*facepalm* No comment…

Dancing with the Stars 2011 – For Your Consideration…

It’s almost that time of year, folks – Emmy Nominations. In case anyone was wondering if DWTS was serious about wanting an Emmy (any Emmy) at this point, you can rest assured they are serious enough to pay for ads in Hollywood Reporter. :-) How do I know? I’m a subscriber and check out this screen cap of an email I just got:

I think it’s WAY past time for the show and Tom Bergeron to win the damn thing already. And don’t get me started on Derek as groomsman never the groom. :-) Yes, blah blah blah, it’s wonderful to be nominated – but I want them all to WIN. :-)

Anyway, we’ve been throwing lots of questions at you guys in this hiatus thus far so here’s another one: What dances from Seasons 11 and 12 do YOU think should be nominated for choreography?? Don’t forget the pro dances, since those stand a much better chance for a nomination than a celeb partner dance. Why do I say that? Well, it’s a choreography nomination, but I think we’d be kidding ourselves if we didn’t think that execution counts. Oh, and you CAN’T include the last….probably 2 weeks of Season 12. I haven’t looked at the rules for this season, but the DVD submission date last time eliminated the last 2 or 3 weeks of Season 10 from eligibility.

What do I think?? Well, if I recall, Louis and Maks did the lion’s share of the pro dances which increases their odds. UNFORTUNATELY, I think it would be very difficult to get a nomination for a dance done with a musical act, which knocks their odds right back down again. I also think it would be tough for Mark and Val to get one because more than half of their challenge thing was non-dancing. Derek? Well, he didn’t do the choreo for any pro dances and was only on Season 11 – that leaves his dances with Jennifer. Since he’s been nominated a good bit recently, I think the odds of, say, his Argentine Tango or second Paso with Jennifer might might be okay. But the odds are slimmer than usual simply because there’s only one season to choose from. Maks might have a shot with Brandy, Mark might have a shot with Chelsea (and really, wasn’t that the whole entire point of the Wizard Waltz?)…can YOU think of any other dances that are really, truly Emmy-worthy?? Be honest now. What you also have to consider is “So You Think You Can Dance” – that show, along with some of the award shows, tends to take the lion’s share of the nominations and more often than not, the win. Why? Well, all the dancers are trained and it’s ALL dancing – no musical acts with dance accompanying. Plus, there are no rules on SYTYCD – that makes a HUGE difference when it comes to choreography. For that reason, odds are that DWTS will be limited to ONE nomination for choreo. Who will it be? Or will they be shut out entirely?? What do you think??
