So far, Carrie Anne is happy with all the contestants. She talks about who surprised and disappointed her Monday night. She is the most impressed with the “men” this year. She also discusses her dance drama “State Of Grace”. They are making the pilot and hoping it will be approved for a series soon. I hope it’s approved. I can’t wait to watch Erik Roberts in his role.

I’d say Randall did just that last night!! The only costume I questioned a little was Wendy’s. I thought it made her hips and bust look too big and it was a little gawdy. Then again, it kind of fit her personality? Anyway, here is a fun intervew from Stylist for how Randall came up with some of the costumes. Be sure to read the link for more.
StyleList: Kendra Wilkinson has said she wants to go against type and not show too much skin but, c’mon,you want to go skimpy with her?
Randall Christensen: With Kendra, I think we can prove that being covered up is just as sexy as showing a lot of skin. We certainly did that last season with Bristol Palin. But, as the weeks progress, if she continues competing, I’ll bet you see she wants to peel some layers away.StyleList: Kirstie Alley has had a very public weight struggle. How do you dress her in a way that makes her feel confident and beautiful?
RC: First of all, Kirstie is every woman! She is open, honest, excited and possibly a bit nervous about the costumes. But definitely, she is loving and embracing the costume aspect of the show. We have tried several looks on her and will continue to do so during the production time. Finding just the right look for her is an ongoing process and Kirstie really knows what looks good on her body. I’ve even had her show me clothes she loves to wear, so I can borrow some of that detailing. So I’m confident we will find just the right thing.StyleList: Wendy Williams is so tall and wears a size 11 shoe. Are you going to have trouble finding things that fit?
RC: Wendy is a dancing goddess already. She looks phenomenal in her clothes and knows what looks best on her. Everything that she will be wearing will be custom made for her body as it is for everyone on the show. She’s going to be amazing.
Below is what Maks and Randall reported to InStyle about their work and costuming Kirstie.
“The season’s going amazing, rehearsals are phenomenal,” he (Maks) continued. “The strength for her is that she wants to do it, she wants to dance. She just loves the idea of it, she loves the movement, shedding off weight.” And she has—costume designer Randall Christensen told us Alley lost at least 16 pounds so far. “She’s the easiest person to change,” Chmerkovskiy said. “People with stuff on them that shouldn’t have been there to begin with are the easiest to change. It just requires their will and my will, and we’ve both have that.” So what dance will they blow you away with? “The cha-cha!” he said. “And she’s miles beyond what I expected.” We can’t wait!
There is also a fascinating article at Rocket News on the costuming process.
“People really don’t realize that there’s no magic closet that we pull this from. It is a bolt of fabric every Wednesday,” says Christensen, a dancer who’s been making costumes professionally since 1978. “We never use a ready-made costume … every single solitary thing is made from scratch.”
Twenty-two custom-made costumes and 11 new stars will make their debut on Monday’s season premiere (8 p.m. EDT). The cast includes actors Kirstie Alley, Ralph Macchio and Chelsea Kane; athletes Sugar Ray Leonard, Hines Ward and Chris Jericho; singer Romeo; radio host Mike Catherwood; talk-show host Wendy Williams; reality star Kendra Wilkinson; and model Petra Nemcova. Each contestant is paired with a professional dancer who choreographs and teaches the week’s routines and dreams up the costume concepts.
Christensen translates their visions into sketches on Tuesday and buys the fabrics on Wednesday. His team of two patternmakers and 10 seamstresses transform the raw materials into costumes by Friday.
Their workroom contains the highest concentration of sequins anywhere at CBS Television City, where “Dancing” is filmed. Along one wall are bolts of fabric: shimmery purple, deep emerald green and bright royal blue — materials ordered from a dance company in Europe where the fringe, stretch fabric, mesh and chiffon all match.
“That’s the toughest challenge,” Christensen says.
Fourteen sewing machines and mannequins from size 0 to 16 are in the room, as are costumes in various stages of creation. (A tiny pewter beaded number sits on a plastic-covered dress form outfitted with “booty pads.”)
And the gowns aren’t just gorgeous on the outside; bra cups and body-shaping panels are hidden inside to provide a solid foundation and prevent wardrobe malfunctions.
Christensen also has to consider the show’s requisite spray tans when it comes to each costume’s color and fit: “They’re going to be mahogany by Monday, they just keep spraying and spraying,” he says. “We can’t use double-stick tape. It does not stick with the perspiration, the gyration and the tanning creams. So if it’s gaping somewhere, we have to take that dress off, rip the stones off, put a dart in, re-sew it and re-stone it.”
The crew has just a few hours to correct any wardrobe issues between Monday afternoon’s dress rehearsal and that night’s live show.
Racks of gowns line another wall, including those ready for Monday’s premiere. Seamstresses sit at large tables at one end of the room, meticulously adding fringe, feathers and crystals to some of Monday’s outfits. Each is assigned a celebrity. If her dancer is eliminated, she assists another dressmaker. Since season two, these 10 women have worked together, creating couture gowns at a breakneck pace.

Where do we begin today after a night like LASTNIGHT? Wow, what a premiere and one of the best ever!! For some reactions from our dance couples, read on.

You heard it here first, folks: Kirstie Alley is a force to be reckoned with this season on ABC’s smash hit reality competition, Dancing With the Stars. So what’s the secret to her success? Good old-fashioned work ethic! Alley tells E! News, “I did work hard, and I’m going to work harder now. I’ve had the taste of an eight, I want a nine.”
Original Karate Kid Macchio says that he was particularly gratified to hear the audience cheer their support as he took control of the dance floor. He says, “Having that kind of fan response [was motivating]—it was live theater at its best.” Partner Karina Smirnoff piped up that the audience’s enthusiasm was as gratifying as their high scores, saying, “It’s worth every hour and every pain of rehearsal,” to which Macchio shot back, “I have a lot more pain that she does! A lot more!” (He’s new to this gig, guys! Give him a break; he’ll limber up soon enough.)
Meanwhile, our good friend Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett (of E!’s Girls Next Door and Kendra fame) says that she’s also trying to live in the moment, because looking forward just freaks her out. The football wife says, “I was so nervous I could barely breathe. I didn’t breathe. I didn’t take one breath throughout the routine, but you know, man, my fans, I had my fans here, and it really kept me going. It just made me feel so good having them here…The second that we ended our dance, the nerves went away—that was the scary part. Going to the judges, that was easy.”
Posture’s also an issue for legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard who told us, “[The biggest issue is] my posture; because [I was a] boxer for 30 years…I can’t just correct this in two days or three days or two weeks.”
And lovable supermodel Petra Nemcova, who recently told us about her posture problems, says, “I was emotional, and that threw me off-balance…so I wasn’t as focused and as fluid as I would be, normally, but it was amazing experience, and every week it’s going to get easier—or harder. You never know, but [at least] you know the environment that you are getting into. That part will be more comfortable.”
ET Online interviewed them after their dances. They tell us what was going through their heads as they took the stage and afterwards, etc.

So ends the first night of season 12 😀 Overall, I think I’m fairly happy with what transpired – I think some favorites emerged, some not-so-favorites fell from grace a little, and some personal growth was made that was really kind of cool to watch! I have to admit, this is the first season in quite some time where I went in without a clear favorite – seriously, I was watching tonight with a completely open mind. No Kelly’s, Pam’s, or Situation’s to root for from day 1 🙂 But I think I definitely have some favorites now…I’ll let you guys figure out who they are 😉
Thankfully, there is no elimination this week, so those couples who didn’t do so hot tonight at least have one more chance to redeem themselves and hopefully avoid next week’s elimination. But just for fun, I’m going to rank anyway, as if there were an elimination tomorrow night – just to see how these couples stack up 🙂 ONWARD!
Ultrasound sales specialist by day, semi-knowledgeable DWTS fan by night...with a smattering of hair & makeup enthusiast, occasional model, baker, and crazy cat lady peppered in to make things REALLY interesting ;-) I might pee my pants in happiness if Donnie Wahlberg ever does DWTS - or if they ever use "Sunglasses at Night" as a paso doble.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
Oh, this is so good. Cameron Mathison asks the “Dancing With the Stars” cast about their first show on Good Morning America today!! You can see them rehearsing on stage and being interviewed and shown backstage, etc.. Way fun! Are we getting excited yet here because I’m about to bust wide open?!! lol
Edit to add:: Speaking of Good Morning America, Derek Hough will be rating the dancers tomorrow (Tue.) on the show. So, stay tuned for that as well. 😉

So… before the start of last season I attempted to place the “stars” via a long series of calculations in hopes to predict who would leave when during the course of the season.
Needless to say, although I was off in some cases I was also spot on in other cases.
In case you have forgotten what factors I’ve used to calculate the placement of the stars here’s a bit of a refresher: DWTS Season 11 Stat Class
Now it would be interesting to note how the last season affecting the standings of each pro… so below is what the pro ranks are AFTER Season 11 followed by what they were PRIOR to Season 11:
1. 1.) Derek Hough – 7 Seasons
2. 2.) Julianne Hough – 5 Seasons
3. 4.) Lacey Schwimmer – 4 Seasons
4. 3.) Cheryl Burke – 10 Seasons
5. 7.) Dmitry Chaplin – 2 Seasons
6. 10.) Mark Ballas – 7 Seasons
7. 13.) Maksim Chmerkovskiy – 9 Seasons
8. 5.) Kym Johnson – 8 Seasons

5. 40s (40 thru 49)
6. 70s (70 thru 79)

Now it is important to note that the ages represent the age that a celeb is at while they are participating in the show. So if someone is 29 when they were on the show and is in their early-30s now the age group they are representing is that of their 20s.
And finally we have occupations. I tried to use the primary occupation that a celeb is most known for since we do have a lot of crossover celebrities. This category probably contains the most variables when attempting to calculate ranks:
1. NFL athlete
2. Olympian (one that has been to the Olympics AND medaled)
3. Band Member (ie 98 Degrees, Spice Girls, NKOTB, etc)
4. Disney (anyone that got their start w/ Disney, Billy Ray Cyrus is NOT part of this group)
5. Entertainer (ie Wayne Newton, Marie and Donny Osmond)
6. Soap Opera Star
7. Singer (Master P, Billy Ray Cyrus, Toni Braxton, Lil Kim, Aaron Carter, Michael Bolton)
8. Actor
9. Athlete (ie Helio, Monica Seles, Ty Murray, Chuck Liddell, Louie)
10. Host (ie Kenny Mayne, Jerry Springer, Lezza Gibbons, Brooke Burke, Erin Andrews)
11. Actress
12. NBA athlete
13. Boxer (ie Evander Holyfield, Laila Ali, Floyd Mayweather)
14. Reality TV Star
15. Other (anyone that does not fit in any other category)
16. Model

Now that we know which celebs are part of Season 12, it is time to calculate and attempt to predict how they would place in the upcoming season.
For issues of time and ease of understanding I am only going notate which group each celeb fits per category and their rank, as well as their overall rank.
SUGAR RAY LEONARD
Age: 50s (Rank: 11)
Occupation: Boxer (Rank: 9)
Pro Partner: Anna Trebunskaya (Rank: 8 )
OVERALL RANK: 11
I really don’t know what to say about this. I mean Anna has done well recently, but for every high placement she has a low placement. Other than Laila Ali, Boxers typically do not rank high in their season despite the natural fast feet. But the first to go? I could see others more likely to fit that bill…
WENDY WILLIAMS
Age: 40s (Rank: 8 )
Occupation: Host (Rank: 6)
Pro Partner: Tony Dovolani (Rank: 7)
OVERALL RANK: 10
Female hosts tend to do better than male hosts in the overall standings, but that is also dependent on what they have come in with and if memory serves most of those female hosts has had some prior dance experience, be it ballet, contemporary, etc. Does Wendy have any of that? Not to my knowledge but things could change. Still, personally, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see her as one of the first to go.
RALPH MACCHIO
Age: 40s (Rank: 8 )
Occupation: Actor (Rank: 4)
Pro Partner: Karina Smirnoff (Rank: 9)
OVERALL RANK: 9
Actors tend to do better than actresses, granted that’s mainly in part of the viewing demographic. However with other better eye candy on the horizon, does he really stand a chance?
KENDRA WILKINSON
Age: 20s (Rank: 1)
Occupation: Reality TV Star (Rank: 10)
Pro Partner: Louis van Amstel (Rank: 10)
OVERALL RANK: 8
Another bunny decides that she wanted to come out and play. Thank goodness her first dance isn’t the quickstep, else I may have to walk away do to some distraction or another. I mean, having a bounce is one thing, but bouncing all over the place is quite another. Still the ChaCHa isn’t exactly an improvement in the bounce department, unless Louis knows how to keep the puppies tame. Being young has its advantages, but that only goes so far.
KRISTIE ALLEY
Age: 60s (Rank: 7)
Occupation: Actress (Rank: 8 )
Pro Partner: Maksim Chmerkovskiy (Rank: 5)
OVERALL RANK: 7
Maksim has had his taste in the top three for a few seasons now, but Kristie is coming up in her age. To me she’s the most “known” but that is only because I loved the “Look Whose Talking” movie series with John Travolta. It will be interesting to see what she comes up with.
PETRA NEMCOVA
Age: 30s (Rank: 4)
Occupation: Model (Rank: 11)
Pro Partner: Dmitry Chaplin (Rank: 3)

Ah yes, the prettiest couple. I am a Dmitry ‘groupie’, so any chance that he could stay on the show longer is a happy day for me. But models tend to do poorly when it comes to placement beating out comedians! Ah well, I’m crossing my fingers.

YES!!! You have no idea how excited I was to hear that they asked him to come on this season. He has GOT to be an improvement over his dad. His pro partner is arguably an improvement (for those that have forgotten, when he was originally asked to join, his partner was slated Ashly DelGrosso now Costa but he was replaced by his dad due to injury). So I am very interested to see how this would pan out.
CHRIS JERICHO

Don’t ask me how this happened. But it has happened again. In last year’s pre-season ranking I had Bristol Palin and Kyle Massey in the top three and look what happened! I am just saying that at this point, anything can happen.
And there you have it, the final odds as calculated by my normalized calculations derived from the last eleven seasons. Normally I wouldn’t agree with a good number of these ranks, but as it stands, numbers don’t lie and last year just reminded me of that. So let’s just sit back, relax, and see what’s going to happen this season.

As you can see from our last posting, the Las Vegas Odds have changed some once again. Kendra is definitely in the hot seat at #1. Mike Catherwood has made a big rise from when they first had him at the bottom of the pack several weeks ago. Ralph, Hines, Chelsea, and Sugar Ray continue to have high odds. Let the dancing begin I say! 🙂
