Executive Producer Rob Wade Discusses Disney Night On Dancing With The Stars

Would you believe it takes 9 months to pull of Disney Night on Dancing With The Stars? Executive Producer Rob Wade talks all about it in a new article at the Huffington Post. This is Fascinating stuff. Be sure to read more at the link.

“That’s actually how long we’ve been having meetings about ‘Disney Night,’ which is the theme of this week’s show,” explained Rob Wade, the executive producer of this long-running ABC series. “But you have to understand that — when you’re building an episode of Dancing with the Stars around Disney — you’ve got this huge assortment of characters to chose from. Not to mention decades of popular music to dig through as you look for just the right songs to build dance routines around.”

Ah, but then there’s the other aspect of “Disney Night” on Dancing with the Stars. In order to make Monday night’s proceedings seem genuinely magical, Wade & Co. are going to take memorable pieces of Disney animation and then digitally insert them into this week’s dance routines.

“We did this for the first time with last year’s ‘Disney Night’ and really got a huge reaction from Dancing with the Stars viewers. So this time around, we’re going all out. You’re not only going to see brief bits of Disney animation in Monday night’s dance routines, you’re also going to see it in the show’s bumpers. We’ll have live Disney characters — Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Pluto — performing in the show’s opening number. We’ll even be flying people as part of this week’s dance routines, just like in Aladdin, ” Rob enthused. “Truth be told, you’re going to see Disney characters throughout this week’s show. At one point, you’ll even see an animated Pinocchio clapping at the judge’s table.”

As you might expect, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that goes into pulling off a 2 hour-long, live television presentation like Dancing with the Stars. But when you add digitally inserted animated footage and live costume characters to that mix, what was once just tough to pull off now verges on impossible.

“That’s why — for the past two weeks — we’ve been getting ready for our ‘Disney Night’ show. This past Saturday, we had a whole extra day onstage where we did just prep,” Wade stated.

“All season long, the celebrities have really been looking forward to performing on ‘Disney Night.’ That’s one of the main reasons we scheduled this particular Dancing with the Stars show for the middle of the season. So that as many of our celebrity performers as possible would then get the chance to dance to a piece of classic Disney music,” Rob stated.

“Of course, we obviously want to make sure that whatever our celebrities do with the Disney characters looks fabulous and is suitably impressive. So just from a technical perspective, this particular episode of Dancing with the Stars will be a real challenge. There’s an extra level of precision involved with this particular show,” Wade said. “Which is why I’d like to remind the folks watching at home that — thanks to all of the talented people who work in front of and behind the camera — ‘Dancing with the Stars’ always looks polished and professional. But you still have to remember that this is a two hour-long live TV show.”

DWTS Season 20, Week 4 – Dancing by the Numbers

Here we are, week 4 going into week 5 and the scoring wasn’t too horrendous. There was one glaring error in what was otherwise a relatively decent scoring/ranking by the judges and that was Willow’s 39. Now, don’t get me wrong. I like Willow. I liked the dance. My comments on the dance weren’t on the dance quality but the fact that I had hard time following it with all the other dancers involved.  In terms of dance quality, I defy anyone to convince me (won’t happen) that Willow’s dance was 3 points better than that amazing AT from Nastia or 4 points better than Rumer’s Waltz-ish dance. Was Willow on par with Nastia and Rumer?? Sure, I would buy that. She did a damn good job, in spite of my problems with the production. But 3 or 4 points *better*??  Um, no. Especially when you consider that there are fewer strict rules in a contemporary routine, which means it’s marginally easier to do.  Even if you claim that “Nastia is boring” or “Rumer is one note” that still doesn’t equate to 3 or 4 points difference. Or it shouldn’t. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

New Las Vegas Odds For Dancing With The Stars Week 5 – Lots Of Switching Going On

What a difference a week, another dance, and an elimination can make. The odds makers have placed their new bets for week 5 of Dancing With The Stars Season 20 at Sports Bovada. Note how there has been some switching among the contestants compared to last week’s odds. It’s also interesting how someone in the middle of their predictions have been eliminated every week so far. Could the same happen this week? I don’t know, but, be sure to let us know what you think in comments after you take a look….

Nastia Liukin 10/11
Willow Shields 3/1
Rumer Willis 7/2
Riker Lynch 12/1
Robert Herjavec 12/1
Noah Galloway 33/1
Suzanne Somers 66/1
Chris Soules 100/1
Patti LaBelle 100/1

Last week’s Odds:

Nastia Liukin 10/11
Rumer Willis 3/1
Riker Lynch 6/1
Willow Shields 10/1
Michael Sam 20/1
Noah Galloway 20/1
Robert Herjavec 20/1
Chris Soules 50/1
Suzanne Somers 50/1
Patti LaBelle 100/1

My thoughts: First of all, I was shocked to see Riker and Robert tied. Robert stepped it up last week, but, I don’t think he has the dance ability of Riker in the least. Then again, it’s not always about “dance ability”? I also think Noah is making a bigger impact than the odds makers think. He should be in 5th place (atleast) in my opinion. Though it’s interesting….every time I ask my boss and my co-worker what they think of every show and who they are liking the most this season, they say NOAH! My Dad is loving him too, but, he loves Nastia as well. He’s been giving all of his votes to her and Derek every week (good job, Dad!). Anyway, other than switching Noah and Robert, I think the odds makers are about right. I’d place the top four in the same way right now. I was really happy to see them put Willow in second especially.

Heidi and Court, what do you think?

Courtney: Not a whole lot to add about this week’s odds – glad they finally see that Chris is really not much to sneeze at, but like Vogue, I’m also a bit puzzled at why they have Riker & Robert tied.  Then again, if they’re buying into what the judges are saying…it would make sense, because Riker kinda got picked apart while Robert got praised this past week.  I don’t think Robert has gotten a very harsh critique yet – they’ve gone pretty easy on him, while Riker (the better dancer) seems to be getting a lot more constructive criticism about everything from his hands to his frame to “dancing like a girl”.  Have wonder if the oddsmakers also recognize that Rumer’s becoming a tad one-note, too…as she’s been slipping a bit each week since week 1.  Good to see Willow making her way up the chart – I think she’s going to be one to watch in the coming weeks.

Heidi: They seem to buy into what the judges say every season with no regard for anything else. The exception being Nastia, I think. Have the judges really raved over her? I don’t think so – not any more so than they have Rumer. But she has been beating Rumer in scores the last few weeks, so maybe that’s the difference. But not enough for Willow to knock Nastia down in the rankings. It’s all rather interesting. I would love to know how they come up with this stuff. Honestly, I don’t know what’s going to happen (for a change) and that is rather exciting. I still don’t think Nastia can win (and Derek’s show was extended to the 7th due to it’s popularity, so no let up on his schedule), I have a hard time believing Willow can win….but I also think that if Rumer were killing it in votes she would be getting better scores. After all, there is nothing the judges like more than being “right”. If Riker’s fans are the voting kind, he could actually win. I just don’t know. So, I guess I can understand the odds being a bit hinky. :-)

The Dancing Poetry Corner – The Chapters of Life

What is your Most Memorable year? If you would like to, please share. In my 63 years of life, there are so many memorable years. It is hard to pick just one, isn’t it? I could choose my wedding year, 1975, when I married Kenneth Troutman. I could choose 2001, the year he died from cancer. There are many years in between. There are many years in my earlier lfe. I will choose 1990 (December 27) when we found out Ken had prostate cancer. That was the beginning of time until his death that had a profound affect on us. And changed life as we knew it into dealing with our cancer journey. The dance that resonated the most with me was Robert and Kym’s Waltz dedicated to his Mother who lost her life from cancer. I would give something to be able to have a pro teach me a Waltz dedicated to Ken. The music I would choose is Swan Lake. Ken loved classical music especially Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and the 1812 Overture, which was his favorite piece of music. He played both over and over. He introduced me to classical music and I love it, too.

You know how you find an incredible book you can’t put down? You have to keep reading well into the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t want to put Dancing With the Stars down for The Most Memorable Year night. I wanted it to continue for hours! This night of dancing is special! The emotions flow out of every space of the ballroom! The stars bear their hearts and souls through dance. The stars depicted:

The Chapters of Life

The Ballroom was dripping with floods of emotion
Eyes were moist with tears dripping down our faces

Each chapter was told through movement of dance
Each step, each moment had a profound affect on us

We were taken into a book of life as the pages turned
Each journey a valiant display, bearing of hearts, souls Read more..

Resident DWTS Poet

Suzanne Somers Blogs About Being “Chrissy Snow” Again on DWTS And More

Suzanne Somers writes of how much fun she had on Dancing With The Stars last night, but, she found their scores “discouraging” (awww, I loved their dance too). Here is more from People.

I thought I danced great. I wanted it to be joyous, that Chrissy Snow was dancing and having the time of her life. It was the combination of the character and fulfilling the intricate steps of the foxtrot. It took a lot of thought, but I didn’t find the dance to be very hard. Each week the steps get easier for me, which is encouraging.

I think the judges’ comments and scores [adding up to 28 out of 40] were not allowing for the fact that I am improving each week. I am not a dancer, and I am starting at ground zero every Tuesday and giving it my all. So I found their scores somewhat discouraging.

Next week is Disney week, and I am looking forward to dancing to “He’s a Tramp” from The Lady and the Tramp. I am hoping this week that I can wear a beautiful gown and morph into Marilyn Monroe.

More at People including her thoughts about playing Chrissy Snow again.
