Dancing with the Stars Season 17, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers

This week, I saw lots of questions about Bill Nye’s departure from the show. Some said there was no way that others got more votes than him. To which I responded, “they didn’t have to, Bill could get more votes and still be eliminated if he didn’t cover the spread.” This is the thing that continually gets lost no matter how many times I write these numbers posts. Bill Nye was WAY below the next highest scorer, so HE had to make up lots of votes in order to stick around.

I saw some comments saying it was “fishy”. Was it fishy? Well, it certainly could be, depending on your perspective. I mean, really, Brant got a 27? I don’t think so, in a real world. There is no way he did a better job dancing than so many couples. But he most likely was in danger of leaving and was, thus, overscored to protect him from Bill Nye. You overscore Brant and make sure others who might not be getting the votes have enough of a lead on Bill Nye and it’s perfectly plausible that Bill goes home. How did the night stack up once all was said and done?? See below.

Table 1

Looking at that table, it seems to me that Brant was grossly overscored and Christina was overscored a bit, relative to Amber. Is it a coincidence that two people likely at risk due to Bill Nye but who are good dancers are overscored? I don’t think so. I think Liz is also in potential danger, but she danced very well, so I wouldn’t say she was overscored. Bill’s low score gives her breathing room. The people in danger, IMO, are scored high enough to put them out of reach, those who are getting votes are getting more realistic scores. Just my speculation. So, what did Bill Nye have to do to actually stay on the show and how did others have to do in terms of votes to be safe? See below. Read more..

Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Las Vegas Odds For Week 4

The new Las Vegas Odds have been posted at Sports Bovada!! They are still picking Corbin Bleu for the win with Amber Riley close behind! Also, check out how they’ve tied Christina Milian and Elizabeth Berkley for 3rd. Give it up for Snooki as she has raised up the ladder the most compared to last week’s odds. But geez, if they can bet on Snooki, why not Bill Engvall too who they have placed last again. šŸ˜Æ I sometimes don’t understand the odds makers?

Corbin Bleu 7/4
Amber Riley 5/2
Christina Milan 6/1
Elizabeth Berkley 6/1
Snooki 10/1
Brant Daugherty 12/1
Jack Osbourne 12/1
Leah Remini 16/1
Valerie Harper 66/1
Bill Engvall 100/1

Below are last week’s odds:

Corbin Bleu 2/1
Amber Riley 7/2
Christina Milan 7/2
Elizabeth Berkley 13/2
Jack Osbourne 10/1
Brant Daugherty 12/1
Leah Remini 12/1
Snooki 12/1
Bill Nye 50/1
Valerie Harper 50/1
Bill Engvall 100/1

So, what do you think? Do you agree with the odds makers this time? Let us know in comments and let’s see what Heidi and Court think too…..

Courtney: Do they REALLY still think Valerie has a better chance of winning than Bill??? After this week??? I’d say the hammer kinda dropped on Valerie and Bill had a breakthrough week – I would think Bill’s stock would have gone up and Valerie’s would have plummeted to the bottom.Ā  God bless Valerie, she’s a joy and an inspiration to watch, but I think we’ve seen the best we’re going to see out of her – and even if she’s getting a ton of votes, if she’s also getting scores in the teens, her days are likely numbered on this show. Bill only seems to be gaining popularity & improving his scores – and whileĀ I wouldn’t put it past The Three Stooges/The Men Upstairs to try and backdoor Bill in order to save a dubious vote-getter (but better dancer) like Elizabeth, Christina, or Brant, I like to think they’re perhaps starting to see the value in keeping Bill around.Ā  Glad Snooki managed to leapfrog over Brant, but I don’t agree with Jack dropping – he had an off-week, yes, but I think Brant’s popularity is going to be rather fleeting – while Jack will likely have an appealing growth arc that peaks later this season, when it really counts.Ā  Not even gonna comment on the top 2 – already beginning to tire of the “Is it going to be Corbin or Amber who wins???” debate.Ā  And I think the oddsmakers are smoking crack if they think Elizabeth or Christina’s odds of winning are that good – particularly the former, who still seems to be failing to connect with viewers.

Heidi: Let me answer it for you, Courtney – Amber isn’t going to win. šŸ™‚ I love Amber. Ā I love her personality, I love her work ethic, I love her relationship with Derek…but I don’t believe she will win. She was dancing in low heels because she rolled her ankle, and now she’s having knee problems. Corbin may not be as popular from a fanbase standpoint, but he’s going to have the judges on his side. And how can he not? He and Elizabeth are the ringers of the season and he isn’t lacking the personality like Elizabeth is. I think, as long as Amber doesn’t seriously injure herself, the top 2 is probably right. Ā I will be VERY disappointed if Bill and Snookie aren’t the next two in the line up. And I don’t think it’s out of the question. Liz and Christina might be ringers, but Snookie and Bill have heart and personality in spades. Not to mention their relationships with their partners. Ā I still believe that either Christina or Liz (but probably not both) is going to be eliminated by week 6 or 7. Ā This, of course, all depends on how heavy handed the judges are going to get to try to keep the better dancers around. They need to be careful though, or people will see the man behind the curtain, especially if Snookie and Bill continue to improve. I think Brant and Jack are up there after Snookie and Bill. The woman left standing after either Liz or Christina (leaning toward Christina at this point) is eliminated will likely snag 3rd or 4th place, shuffling the rest down a slot. Ā šŸ™‚

PureDWTS Guest Poem for DWTS17 Week 3 “A HI HO HOLLYWOOD EXTRAVAGANZA”

Drum rolls please…below is Lois with a Dancing With The Stars Season 17 poem for week 3. Thank you, Lois!!!

A HI HO HOLLYWOOD EXTRAVAGANZA!

A HI HO HOLLYWOOD EXTRAVAGANZA in the ballroom Monday night
Dancing displays from The Lone Ranger to James Bond, a pure delight

The ballroom was a brilliant, breathtaking, bedazzling, bewitching sight
The opening number of a Vaudeville, flapper theme in the bright spotlight

Elizabeth and Val glided across the floor, a Foxtrot with grace and verve
Jack and Cheryl wowed the crowd, their Cha Cha Cha they did serve

The Charleston, the happy feet of Amber and Derek, Christina and Mark
A Jazz routine by Bill and Tyne, robots filling the floor with stationary spark

Tony and Leah attacked the Rumba with elaborate steps as in a revue
Tristan and Valerie performed Grace Kelly and Freddy Mercury on cue

Corbin and Karina Quickstepped with lightning fast, high stepping feet
Brant and Peta Quickstepped on the floor with marvelous moves so neat

Nicole and Sasha sparkled the Paso Doble and a one handed cartwheel
HI HO SILVER, Bill, Emma’s Paso excited the ballroom, sealing the deal

The time came for the couples to take their places at the end of the show
Sadly Bill and Tyne were the ones leaving, they had to leave, had to go

A HI HO HOLLYWOOD EXTRAVAGANZA of epic proportions and thrills
We were left wanting more dancing, much more to fill our dancing bills

The dancing show we love so much will return Monday night we are sure
Don’t you wish we had the Tuesday night show for more dancing galore!

Afterbuzz Reviews DWTS With Sharna Burgess, Arsenio Hall Interviews Keyshawn Johnson

Afterbuzz reviewed Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 3. This time Sharna Burgess and Anna Trebunskaya join them. It’s so great to see Sharna again!! She talks more of her teaching Keyshawn Johnson to dance and their elimination. She also says she’ll still be dancing on the show this season for the opening numbers. Lots more below including a break down on Monday’s show. See if you agree with all of their assessments…

And speaking of Sharna, Keyshawn Johnson was a surprise guest on The Arsenio Hall Show last night during a segment when they were talking on the football players who have done Dancing With The Stars. He talks of how nerve wrecking Dancing With The Stars was performing LIVE, but, it was a great experience.

PureDWTS Season 17 Week 3 More Media After Dance Night Part 2

Hey All! Just a few more media things to share!! Below is Extra with the cast after the show! Derek comments on Julianne judging next week at the end. Val is asked about Maks judging as well.

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Also, don’t miss the cast being interviewed by Glamour. They ask some of the cast members about the craziest L.A thing they ever done. There are some cool backstage shots at the link too. Thanks to Lori for this gem.

Jack Osbourne: One time, Paris Hilton was in my car and we were running away from paparazzi, and I had my buddy with me from England and he had never been to L.A. before and he arrived an hour earlier, and here we are, with Paris in the car, flying down Sunset Blvd. with all these paparazzi following us, and heā€™s like, ā€˜what is happening right now?!ā€™ It was a pretty weird moment!

Corbin Bleu: I have never done this before, and Iā€™ll never do it again, but I was at a club in Vegas, and there was a pool in the middle of the place. We were having a great time, and one of my friends got a little drunk and pushed me in the pool. So I come out of the pool, dripping wet, and the security comes up and says, ā€˜you have to leave!ā€™ Iā€™m going, ā€˜but she pushed me in!ā€™ They werenā€™t having it. I couldnā€™t even get it out of my mouth, but I actually said, ā€˜Do you know who I am?ā€™ and he goes, ā€˜No.ā€™ And the friend that I was with is a well-known actress as well and so I said, ā€˜well, do you know who she is?ā€™ [Laughs] Needless to say, we ended up leaving. But it made a funny story, and I would never do that again!

Anna Trebunskaya wrote a review on this week’s dances at ABC as well. I was a bit shocked when she said Amber and Derek’s dance could have used more content. Wha?

Valerie Harper: A very cute concept. I was smiling the whole time during this routine. Valerie looked beautiful and Tristan looked slightly kooky. I loved it. I feel that Valerie really had a tough time remembering this weekā€™s routine. There were a lot of hesitations and uncertainties in her movement. I hope she gets back on her groove for the next week and many weeks to come. I love watching her.

Bill Engvall: I love his spirit! Iā€™m so glad that he finished the whole routine and didnā€™t mess up at all. There was a lot of content that was actually Paso Doble. Bill has to learn the difference between creating a strong line and getting stiff throughout the whole body. He is not the most natural dancer on the show, but heā€™s working very hard and it shows.

Amber Riley: That was a very entertaining routine! Not a very technical one, but a lot of fun regardless. I love the combination of old school Charleston and some modern booty shaking (crumpling and hip-hop influence). She looks fantastic and sparkles in every routine. Make the next dance with a little more content, and youā€™ll get a higher score.

Chelsie Hightower wrote on the dances as well at ABC. Here is a bit from her blog.

Christina Milian: Mark and Christina next. Completely entertaining from top to bottom! Loved it! Complete synchronicity through many moments. She can still work on refining some of her moves but in my opinion, it was definitely her best dance so far. (P.S. We have all joked about the risk of painting our faces because if the judges donā€™t like it, you have to endure a grueling five minutes of ridicule with your face painted making you feel like a real idiot.) So Iā€™m really glad the judges loved it as well for marks sake, sanity, and reputation. šŸ˜‰ But back to the dance, do I think it deserved a higher score than Derek and Ambers Charleston? I donā€™t, but it was still great! 9

Nicole ā€œSnookiā€ Polizzi: Loved Snookiā€™s intro and I loved the dance! It was a huge improvement from last week. Snooki could work on pressing her shoulders down and as I would say to my partner, ā€œLock those lats down and throw away the key.ā€ (Back to elementary school and it works every time.) But other than that, she brought great energy and attack. One of these weeks, I want to see her totally immersed in the performance because I know she can show us full on emotion and full on facials. But this dance was very well done. 8.

Bill Nye: Last but not least, ā€œBill Nye The Science Guy! Bill Bill Bill Bill!ā€ (that tune gets me every time). Aww, Bill. He has all the drive to win, but couldnā€™t overcome the insurmountable. You gotta give him props for the valiant effort. There isnā€™t much to critique since he was barely able to move or dance, but I do give him an A+ for effort and his will to succeed. Unfortunately, I have to give him a 6 along with the judges for dancing.

Overall, another wonderful night for dance. Hate to see Bill go cause I know he wanted to be there so much, but it was the right decision especially considering his injury. Until next time!

Lastly, you can also watch Bill and Tyne on The View today at this link.

Shew! What a day and I think that makes this post a wrap! šŸ˜‰

ETA: Carrie Ann Inaba felt compelled to write on the night at Parade. Below is what she wrote on Brant and Snooki. Lots more at the link as always.

Brant Daugherty: Heā€™s turning out to be a stronger and more natural dancer than any of us had expected. Heā€™s got nice jazz lines, cleanā€”almost Broadway-like in their clarity of form. This is good and punctuates his movements clearly. He is light on his feet and is just as agile as Corbin. Heā€™s a pretty dancerā€”meaning his pictures are pretty and heā€™s got an easy musicality. His megawatt smile enhances his performance, as does his incredible chemistry with Peta; his weakness is that sometimes he throws his arms to far. Right now, Iā€™d say his injury is his biggest downfall. Proper placement of his feet in the dances could be problematic in the future.

Snooki: She was the surprise of the night. While her movements can tend to be rigid and stopped short of their full expression, last night, she pulled out an incredible routine and sparkled like never before. Nicole is the wild card, which last night worked for her but may not lend itself to consistency. She is not sure exactly of how to do the movements, but by sheer determination she does them. She has that certain ā€œXā€ factor that is probably what has given her such incredible stardom in such a short time. There is an undeniable magic to Snooki, but the question remains: can she bring magic every time to her routines? I donā€™t think itā€™s a good idea to depend on that. I think she needs to work on finessing and finishing her movements to a nice polish. Then watch out!

PureDWTS Season 17, Week 3 – Power Rankings

Well apparently I missed the memo that Hollywood night was really “Gatsby Night”, as last night’s show seemed to borrow pretty heavily from the new movie…if Baz Luhrmann was going to be a guest judge this season, last night would have been a good night for him to do it! Overall, almost everyone did well and got a rather generous score from the judges – but the unfortunate downside to that is that we may have seen our first glimpse of the puppet strings from the men upstairs, as there was some suspicious overscoring going on that may or may not have contributed to Bill Nye’s exit.Ā  Granted, I think it was his time to go, due both to his injury and the fact that he wasn’t really progressing at the same rate as his fellow contestants.Ā  But Heidi’s numbers post should be exceptionally interesting this week…

…and once again, my rankings are about as clear as mud šŸ˜› I’m seriously having a hard time determining who is the most likely to get sent packing – I’m getting some “struggling with votes” vibes from a few of the couples, but nothing that screams “This person is going home next week!”; I’ve also got the added complication of anticipating the modus operandi of TPTB, who now have the power to influence the outcome since they know exactly how many points each couple needs to stick around.Ā  A rather scary pall cast over an otherwise lovely season to watch, no? For that reason, I could see anyone in my bottom 5 potentially getting sent home – depending on how things go down next week.

1.) Corbin & Karina – I think Corbin had, by far, the highest level of difficulty in terms of choreography in his routine last night – and for what it’s worth, he actually handled it pretty well.Ā  There seemed to be a few issues with wobbly frame, and I saw a couple “deer in the headlights” looks, but he kept up with the footwork decently well and delivered a great quickstep, reminiscent of the quickstep Karina did with Apolo a year ago.Ā  But, like the quickstep she did with Apolo, this one didn’t seem to get the love it deserved – or rather, the love it did get was overshadowed by some suspicious overscoring of another couple.Ā  It also confirmed a fear of mine that has been brewing since week one: that Corbin seems to thrive more in the Latin dances, and loses a bit of his sparkle in the ballroom dances.Ā  He’s got a lot of room to improve, but last night was the first time I’ve seen him be less than confident on the floor – hopefully he can hit a groove with the next ballroom dance he gets.

2.) Amber & Derek – Judging from some of the comments I’m seeing on the show discussion post, seems like there’s a debate raging over who had more “Charleston content” in their routines last night – Amber or Christina.Ā  To be honest, I don’t think either was bona fide CharlestonĀ – first off, there aren’t that many Charleston steps that exist; secondly, Amber’s music dictated that she do something more than just Charleston, and Christina had Mark’s tendency toward the theatric to contend with.Ā  I would say Amber had more Charleston basics, but the overall mood, steps, and themeĀ of Christina’s routine fit the Charleston better.Ā  And at the end of the day, I’ll be honest: I didn’t particularly care for either one.Ā  Amber unfortunately got saddled with a song that was really more hip-hop than Charleston, and with a ridiculously long intro that didn’t allow for much dancing – and the dancing she did do was just ok for me.Ā  She seemed to hit a bit of a wall with the foot action of the Charleston (which isn’t easy – they ended up using a dance double for Tobey Maguire for a few scenes in Gatsby), but I will give her this: ever the showman, she sold the performance well…even if she wasn’t really nailing the steps.Ā  Anyone else find it totally trippy that Len was the one that seemed to gush about this routine – and it was Bruno & Carrie Ann complaining about the content? šŸ˜› Read more..
