More on Derek Hough and Brilynn Rakes – DWTS 16, Week 4, AT&T Spotlight Dance

Just beautiful. Derek talks a bit with Xfinity about dancing with Brilynn:

“She was born with serious vision problems. She’s legally blind. She’ll never drive. She has to wear these special contacts which protect her eyes because she’s incredibly light sensitive. But through all that, where her sight is seriously impaired, she’s become this amazing dancer. For your vision being an important thing, you’d think, for dancing, she’s managed to find ways to make it work. She’s an inspiration.”

“DWTS” viewers will see that Derek choreographed a contemporary ballet piece for Brilynn to the Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’ song “Stars.” “The chorus of the song is, ‘I Can’t Look at the Stars,’” Derek noted. “[But] I can’t believe she’s legally blind.”

The longtime hoofer said Brilynn, who took private lessons for years with Orange County, Calif., dance teacherJayne Persch, can only see shapes a few feet in front of her and can’t detect color. “When she watches TV, she has to get two inches from it and look at it sideways because her peripheral vision is better than her direct vision.”

Brilynn melted Derek’s heart when he learned she had used what little vision she has to watch him on “DWTS.” “She thought she was going to be doing a solo on the show and I kind of came in and surprised her; [producers] said she really likes you on the show; she thinks she’s doing a solo and we want you to surprise her and do a duet.”

Derek said he’s learned a lot from Brilynn as they’ve rehearsed for their big number. “She emulates what I try to live my life by, which is, just following your bliss, your passion, what you love. She did that, even with the restriction in her eyesight. She just loves dancing and followed it, even with her vision. She’s just found a way and we can all take a page out of her book,” Derek told xfinityTV.

“When I watch her dance, I’m surprised how she knows where I am and she can sense me. There are moments we spread apart and I have to make a noise so she can find me and we run into each other. I live for moments like that on the show.”

Derek expects Tuesday to mean a great deal to him: “I can’t help but tear up when I’m dancing with her. It’s pretty special.”

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS 15, Week 4: Anna Trebunskaya & Chelsie Hightower Explain This Week’s Dances

Nice to see that Anna & Chelsie haven’t completely moved onto other projects since being eliminated on Tuesday 🙂 They did a bit for DWTSRadio in which they briefly describe what we can expect to see this week in terms of dances – you can listen to it HERE.  I think they’re option #4, so you can toggle through – but don’t do like I did & get impatient and click too many times, because it will only let you “skip” so many times before it forces you to listen to the segments in order.  Grrrrr.

DWTS All-Stars, Week 4: Apolo & Karina Bring the Heat (and Innuendo) to Access Hollywood

If Kelly & Val are the couple in “puppy love” this season…then Apolo & Karina are the couple most likely to be lusting after one another, methinks ;-P  There’s simply too many “meoooooowwww” moments in this clip to list them all – trust me, you need to just watch…and giggle like a schoolgirl, like Karina.  The couple hit up Access Hollywood yesterday to chat about their chemistry, their hip-hop routine, and…”man Kegels”??? 😯

Ok, you all know I’m not typically the type to swoon over the male pros/celebs on DWTS (the female pros? That’s another story 😉 ).  But something about Apolo in this clip – and just in this season, in general – makes me want to climb all over him like a jungle gym.  He’s definitely grown ‘n’ sexy, and has a wicked, saucy sense of humor that seems to make Karina melt like a popsicle on the 4th of July 😛 The hapless hosts just keep inadvertently asking some eyebrow-raising questions – and Apolo just keeps answering with zinger after zinger, without missing a beat.  And Karina rolls with it just as well! After titillating us with innuendo about 50 Shades of Grey, “hooking up”, and who has more stamina, Apolo also talks about the differences between being partnered with Julianne vs. Karina (“She was only 18, we were not hooking up!”), and Gilles’ quest for the MBT (“He’s got his fangs out!”), and the two also chat briefly about their hip-hop routine this week – Karina says Apolo’s going to be choreographing some of it, and Apolo’s ready to “show everyone his hip-hop side”.  I think I’m most excited for their routine next week – not only because Apolo seems really excited about it, but because they got an AWESOME song…which we will be spoiling at some point this weekend.  Keep your eyes peeled 😎

The two also briefly weighed in on Drew & Helio’s somewhat surprising eliminations, and Bristol’s staying power…I kind of love their facial expressions when talking about Bristol :-P:

So who else is TeamOhYes? Or at least Team “I Wouldn’t Kick Apolo Out of Bed For Eating Crackers”? 😉

Dancing with the Stars All-Stars: Vegas Odds Going Into Week 4

And of course the week Vogue is out of town, we have actually have the biggest odds shakeup so far this season 😛 According to Bovada, Emmitt has finally been bumped out of the top spot by Shawn, with Apolo still holding down the #2 slot.  Emmitt falls to 3rd, while at the bottom of the board, Sabrina falls hard, while Bristol makes a 3-fold jump. Crazy shuffling odds, Batman!!!

Odds going into Week 4:

Shawn Johnson – 7/4
Apolo Anton Ohno – 9/4
Emmitt Smith – 7/2
Gilles Marini – 13/2
Kelly Monaco – 12/1
Melissa Rycroft – 15/1
Bristol Palin – 25/1
Sabrina Bryan – 33/1
Kirstie Alley – 50/1

Last week’s odds going into week 3, to compare:

Emmitt Smith – 2/1
Apolo Anton Ohno – 3/1
Gilles Marini – 5/1
Shawn Johnson – 5/1
Helio Castroneves – 9/1
Sabrina Bryan – 10/1
Kelly Monaco – 22/1
Kirstie Alley – 22/1
Melissa Rycroft – 25/1
Drew Lachey – 30/1
Bristol Palin – 75/1

For the first time this season, I think they’ve actually got it JUST about right – I do think Shawn & Apolo are finale material, while the 3rd spot has become a bit of a wild card for me.  I could see Gilles, Melissa, or even Kelly swooping in to challenge the two Olympians in the finale, at this point.  I’m not so sold on Sabrina anymore, as she quite obviously wasn’t getting the votes and seems to be getting hindered by Louis’ choreography; and I am beginning to think Emmitt isn’t really in it to win it…maybe it was the donkey that made me question if he was champion material.  😛 As for Kirstie & Bristol – who the hell knows.  I’m inclined to think Kirstie is annihilating Bristol when it comes to votes, but stranger things have happened.  Heidi, care to weigh in?

Heidi: Are we using the same odds makers every week? Or do they all come up with the same odds every week?? I just ask, because that seems like it could account for minor differences in the odds from week to week.  Either way, I have to agree with Courtney in that they have it just about right this time.  I think odds are favorable that Apolo and Shawn are there at the finale. The third spot, however…I DON’T think it’s going to be either Bristol or Kirstie. Believe it or not, I still have a bit of faith that if both are still there in 3 weeks the judges will put the hammer down.  I just can’t believe they would seriously want the two of them to make a mockery of an “All Star” season, Bristol in particular.  I know that ratings rule…but I honestly believe that even including Bristol in an all star cast was a mistake that may come back to haunt them.  It’s just not credible. So, at what point does the credibility/integrity (if it ever existed) of the show out weigh the obsessive desire for ratings? I’m hoping week 6 or 7. 🙂  The quest for controversy driven ratings is a double edged sword – at some point you make a mockery.

Heidi Still: Now that I’ve mentioned that word that’s been driving me crazy in the comments lately, DO NOT start talking about how the ratings are down because of Bristol and how adversely DWTS is being impacted. That’s no more true than the ratings going UP due to her in her original season.  ALL OF TELEVISION is down. All of it. When you hear about DWTS taking a 20% dip in the ratings, it’s not catastrophic – all shows have dipped by 20 to 30%  from last season except for (apparently)  the Voice and football, both of which are holding steady.  DWTS is still beating the Voice in total viewers and The Voice is still beating DWTS in the key demo. Nothing has changed there.  What you hear on entertainment news shows is talking heads who aren’t smart enough to make distinctions. 🙂

Court: WORD. 😀 “The ratings are sooooo low!!!” is a DWTS urban legend that I’m growing very tired of debunking, along with the myth of VFTW being solely responsible for Bristol sticking around (they wish), and whether “in jeopardy” and “in the bottom 2” mean the same thing (NO).  But anyway…here’s a screen cap to cleanse your palate.  Happy Thursday, fwiends 😛

“Damn right I brought a donkey for my paso doble! His name is JaGilles…after my two favorite jackasses to ever do DWTS.”

DWTS 15, Week 4: Paula Abdul is Going to Be “Judging from the Heart” Next Week

As many of you already know, Paula Abdul is going to be saddling up to the judges’ table as a guest judge next week.  She took a moment to chat with Access Hollywood after the show Tuesday night about what we can expect from her as a judge:

First impression? Paula’s a little out of it, as always, and from the way she makes it sound, she’s probably going to be pretty lenient in her scoring, since she doesn’t really have a background in ballroom…although that won’t likely matter this coming week, as no one is really doing “real ballroom”, save for Shawn & Derek. As I said to someone on Twitter last night – “I bet they don’t even bother giving her any paddle lower than an 8.5!” Other predictions? Her critiques are probably going to be kinda awkward & rambling, and I’m betting Tom is going to have to cut her off at least once.  Hope you’re armed with plenty of clever exit strategies, Berge 😉  Later in the interview, they also ask Paula what she thinks about the current season of X-Factor (with new judges Demi Lovato & Britney Spears – replacements for Paula & Nicole Scherzinger) and the feuding between judges Mariah Carey & Nicki Minaj on American Idol – both questions she politely dodges. 😛

For those of you who’ve expressed curiousity as to how the presence of an extra judge could affect the results this coming week, check out this “By the Numbers” post Heidi did back in week 7 of season 12 (“Ballroom Greats” week), when famed Latin dancer Donnie Burns was a guest judge. It pretty clearly illustrates how 3 judges vs. 4 judges can affect scoring. The biggest impact will be that the overall point total will increase – which will decrease the margins between points, and actually make it easier to cover the spread.  So for those of you hoping for Bristol to get ousted – I wouldn’t get your hopes up 🙁 But who knows…maybe Paula will be off her meds and really gouge Bristol’s score.  A girl can dream 😀

The DWTS Couples Dish On Their Aches And Pains, Their Next Dances, And More! (Videos)

Let’s get right to it again with some new On The Red Carpet interviews with the remaining couples after week 4 on Dancing With The Stars. I love how George Pennacchio is always able to dig a little deeper with his questions (this week he asks on their aches and pains and how they combat it) and finding out new information and hidden gems for their upcoming dances. NOTE: All but one dance is revealed for next week below.

First up, Derek talks a little on his dislocated shoulder, but, he is ok and ready to take on next week’s dance. They have the Fox Trot to an 80’s theme song which they wouldn’t disclose.

Carson and Anna talk below of having the Jive next week which will have an 80’s song, but, they hope to take it into “another dimension”. What does that mean…especially with Carson involved? He says they plan to get perms. LOL!

George asks Maks and Hope if they have any aches and pains. Hope’s aches and pains are more in her heart than in her body. Dancing (and Maks. lol) are more of an ache and a pain on her mentally. They tease each other as well as comment how much they respect one another. They are dancing the Tango next week to a Bon Jovi song.

George starts out this interview exploring Tristan’s comedic side!! Nancy jokes of how she hasn’t seen that side of Tristan yet. She gets very serious too talking of how blessed and thankful she is to still be on the show. (They don’t talk of their next dance or song.)

Chynna Phillips And Tony Dovolani Dancing With The Stars 13 Elimination Interviews (Videos)

Below are some new interviews with Tony and Chynna after their elimination last night with On The Red Carpet, Access Hollywood, ET, Good Morning America, and Jimmy Kimmel LIVE. They tell their thoughts on their elimination. She talks of her donations, her future plans for an album, and more. Maks has a few words to say in their defense in the second interview. The other couples do as well in the third interview. Billy Baldwin is really upset over the elimination which you can watch in the 4th and 5th interviews (I’d sure like to see him do the show in the future, would you?).

DWTS Season 13, Week 4 – The Results (SPOILERS!!)

Well, the results are in….and Derek dislocated his shoulder in rehearsals.  Oh, wait…you want the other results??

Well, I continue to SUCK at predicting who will go home.  And I’m getting bitter about it.

Chynna and Tony leave us tonight and I have to say that it kinda pisses me off. Yeah, it’s how the show works and we all know that. We had been worried since the beginning that Chynna wasn’t making a big enough impact over all – then to have an off night on top of that??  It is horribly unfortunate.  Hate it.

I wish I had been right for a change.   In other news, Courtney’s record is no better than mine.  I’m in good company. 🙂

DWTS Season 13, Week 4 – Dancing by the Numbers

Ya know, I almost give up on trying to predict what will happen – my record is for crap this season. 🙂 I’m in a slump. And this week is worse than most because there is a huge spread between top and bottom, but no spread at all in the lower tier of dancers. Add in the fact that Chynna blanked completely and doesn’t likely have the passionate fanbase as some of the others and you’ve got troubles.

That said – there is such a thing as a pity vote and she’s likely to get it. I actually was a bit worried about Ricki and JR – a whole bunch of pissed off voters voting for the lower level people could mean trouble for them as well. Unlike Courtney, I didn’t get outraged at JR’s scores – I just wasn’t overly impressed with JR’s dance. That said, of course, I think the 8 was ridiculous. But when you have a 20 and a bunch of 21’s, does that one point for JR really matter? Nah, probably not. I did watch the dance again and revised my opinion somewhat – lovely dance. The 8 is still ridiculous. I wonder if he set the bar too high for CAI or if she’s just off her meds. We’ll see next week if he’s back in business.

I should learn by now that when Derek gets that freaked out look on his face upon hearing his music it generally means he’s going to rise to the occasion. 🙂 Two 10s though? One would have been enough, just because it started a tad rough. But, damn, over all that was impressive. Rather worried that all those people raving on twitter over the dance didn’t vote.

I also have to give major props to Hope and Maks – FINALLY a lovely dance that I can get behind. Well done – very sweet.  And better than Rob and David by more than what the scores indicated.  Not sure what Len is on about unless he’s afraid that she’s not getting the votes because up to now she wasn’t connecting.

Anyway…

Let’s look at the numbers.

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Ricki 29 13.88
2. JR 26 12.44
3. Hope 24 11.48
3. Rob 24 11.48
5. David 23 11
6. Chynna 21 10.05
6. Chaz 21 10.05
6. Nancy 21 10.05
9. Carson 20 9.57
