Below is the new Afterbuzz TV show. Kristyn Burtt, Anna Trebunskaya, Suri Serano, and special guest Jenna Johnson review Dancing With The Stars Season 19 Week 5. Straight up, Krisytn mentions it was “The Judgy Show”. Listen through and see if you agree with them. I was pretty much ok with everything until they got to Derek and Sadie. It was “spectacular” dance in my opinion.
Wow, I can’t get enough of these. Check out Bruno. He’s giving good face too. To see more awesome shots from Dancing With The Stars Season 19 Week 5, see Getty Images.
And this is the week that the hammer drops and suddenly the judges are “over” some of the dance crushes they have had so far this season – particularly Julianne and her crush on Tommy. Hate to say it, but you only have yourselves to blame, guys – when you gush over the same people doing the same rudimentary stuff week after week, you can’t expect them to improve…and then it’s kinda lame to suddenly say “I’m bored, I want more.” But in the same token, you also don’t have to be over-the-top mean – and I think they got that way with a few of the couples tonight. They seemed to lose sight of the fact that these were NOT the regular pairings, which is a tough enough row to hoe, and on top of that, they were all doing these bizarre dance styles that none of them are extensively trained in. Was this REALLY the best week to drop that hammer, stooges?
So I guess the asshattery from Julianne, Carrie Ann, and Bruno made me thankful for Jessie J, who at least seemed to try and find the positive in everyone’s routines while still giving a useful critique – she is a judge on The Voice UK, after all, so I think she felt obligated to be constructive. Also quite impressed with her ability to not only sing live (!!!), but also do some dancing at the same time. As I said on Twitter – it’s so rare to find singers that actually sing live and don’t just lip sync, let along singers that sing live and dance as well. The only other singer I can think of off the the top of my head that also does both is Usher…so she’s in good company.
So I guess all this talk about the judges tonight brings me to pose this question to everyone: do we really need Len? Next week will be the 4th week out of 6 that Len hasn’t been at the judges’ table – and I’m not really noticing his absence. I’m almost wondering, what with his sorta-kinda farewell speech on the finale last season, if he originally was not gonna come back at all this season – and TPTB somehow guilted him into doing a few shows just to maintain some consistency.
But anyway – no elim tonight, but there is one next week, based on last week’s votes, this week’s scores and votes, and next week’s scores. As our longtime readers know, the more total points given out = the smaller the margins = the greater the likelihood of a “shocking” elimination. It really becomes a battle of the fanbases – who’s getting the votes vs. who isn’t. I don’t care if you’re at the bottom of the leaderboard – in a massive-points-dump-to-calculate-elimination scenario like this one, the playing field becomes a lot more level. To give you an idea of what crazy sh*t could happen – Sabrina was voted off the all-star season in a week where she was only 1/2 point away from a perfect score…but the elim was based on multiple weeks of scores and votes. Vote, vote, vote, kids – even if your favorite is in the lead.
1.) Alfonso & Cheryl (Witney) – Aaaaand we’re back to nitpicking Alfonso to death, I see – can’t let him get too confident now, can we PTB? Once again, he dances FLAWLESSLY – and in a style that’s totally different than anything we’ve seen from him so far. He nails the technique (those heel things he was doing at the beginning are insanely difficult – the bf actually got a hairline fracture attempting it during a showcase routine), he nails the drama (loved the dust – just that added drama every time he clapped his hands), and he nails the partnering…and all Carrie Ann and Bruno wanna talk about is the distance between his neck and his shoulder??? Seriously, you stooges – what’s the complaint gonna be next week? He’s moving his ears in a strange way when he’s dancing? His pupils are too dilated? He’s flaring his nostrils too much? Because this is getting ri-goddamn-diculous. I guess I see what they’re trying to do – trying to level the playing field, make it seem like Alfonso isn’t running away with this season (even though he really is), but there’s gonna reach a point when even the most dim viewers are gonna say “Ok, that’s just being petty.” And sorry, but 8’s for a dance that good are just ASSININE…especially when they specifically say Sadie missed a few steps in the beginning of her routine, and give her 9’s across the board. She earned her 9’s – but so did Alfonso. Oh well – at least he still gets THUNDEROUS applause after every dance he does. Read more..
What a night again on Dancing With The Stars. I loved so many of the dances…though the judges were all over the place with under scoring and over scoring. Let’s see what the couples thought. Below are their interviews and a recap with ABC7, Afterbuzz TV, Access Hollywood, and PopTVDotCom. You can also read on some backstage interviews at Glamour. Note: from these interviews, so far, we learn that Mark & Sadie have a rumba next and Mark says they have a beautiful song. Artem and Lea have a Salsa. Val & Janel have a Samba. Witney won’t say what her dance is with Alfonso, but, mentions “Pitbull” when asked about it. Lastly, Peta and Tommy have a Foxtrot. Hopefully, we’ll find out more on the other couple’s dances soon. One more last note and from ABC7: Pitbull is the guest judge for next week.
ETA: You can listen to a review by Candace Cameron Bure on GMA at this link if interested. She also names her top 5.
ETA2: According to Antonio’s instagram, he & Cheryl have a salsa. Thanks to Lauren for the heads up.
ETA3: If you head to E News, you can hear Mark and Sadie talk on their dances last night. Mark raves about Derek and how much he helped Sadie. They mention Bethany too and how much she killed it. Lots more at Pure Derek Hough as well on these four.
Also added below are some interviews with Extra.
I will not be able to watch DWTS Live, but I may get a stream – we’re having tornadoes here and, obviously, I may have to leave the computer. Cross your fingers.
Again, DWTS wants us to pimp the livestream so….you can view Lacey’s Stream on our site, just click the link.
Once again, comment to your hearts contents, as long as you remember the show night rules. Some of you were VERY bad at this last week. If I see any repeat offenders this week, you might find yourself on moderation.
- Our server gets totally hosed when people sit at their computer and click “refresh” constantly. Post a comment, then walk away for five minutes so that others have a chance…and so that Courtney and I can actually post on the site.
- THIS SITE IS NOT TWITTER. Do not post like you are on twitter. You get one warning and then I put you in time out. We need context and content. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don’t watch the east coast feed of the show, so they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you post a comment that says, “Boy, that sucked.” If you want to say “____ and ____’s dance was not good at all, crappy choreo” that’s fine. That would be context. It is good. Remember, if you post five one liners in five minutes, you’ve broken rule number 1.
I’m here!! Thanks god for the men in the opening number. Was starting to get worried about yet another bump and grind. I’m no prude, but that gets old after a while.
On the plus side, maybe this was Jesse J’s one performance for the night and her only bias is someone else singing her song while Janel dances.
God Val, put on a shirt. You ain’t all that. Same to you, Artem.
Antonio is dancing first?? He’s screwed.
Okay, that wasn’t fabulous, but it wasn’t quite the trainwreck I expected. DT says that he and Allison got along really well.
Team Badie!!! How hilarious. I think I would kill Mark if he made farting noises every time I bent over.
Bethany and Mark Hip Hop…I think I liked it. I’m not sure actually. I like the Hip Hop to be a bit harder I think. But she has the right look, the make up.
I love how Derek hangs over the balcony to hear what the judges are saying. He’s so involved.
Gee….I wonder who they’re saving their 9’s for…. :::gag:::
That’s two weeks in a row that Bethany has gone early.
Wow…I’m sensing an agenda. Jonathan wasn’t that bad, I didn’t think. Maybe I’m missing something, but I thought that was his best dance yet.
Like how, before Jonathan danced, that Mark straight up called them out for hosing him on scores. So, what’s the deal? Is someone they want to go far doing poorly in the votes so they need to widen the margins?? I guess we’ll see when Janel dances.
Speaking of Janel – saw a bit of her routine on the red room cam and it looked like a freestyle with a bunch of lifts.
Alfonso freakin’ killed it!! Sure, he can’t do it like Derek did with Kellie, but he’s not a professional. Fantastic! I loved it!! Jules is going to hose him on the score though.
WTF?!?!?!? 8s?? AREYOUKIDDINGME!!!
Hahaha…Derek on All Access telling Sadie not to watch Janel and Artem’s package. Then told the kids to look away from the screen during the dance. LOL Derek: “Is she rubbing him? That’s SO inappropriate.” In Derek’s ‘I’m being funny’ voice.
Thanks god for Julianne – and I guess she would know Burlesque. Anyway, she made up for Beth’s 8s with that one.
Okay, perhaps they’re going to finally give Sadie a score she deserves?? That’s where all the 9’s and 10’s are??
Uh oh, another storm line….
I can’t help but like Michael. Man can’t dance but he’s fun as hell.
Loved Tommy as well.
Sadie KILLED it, but why do I think she’s going to get hosed yet again in scores??
Yep…hosed yet again. You couldn’t throw the girl one ten?? WTF?? Derek calling out the judges – you go boy.
Yeah…Janel and Val don’t play at showmancing. Nope. Nosiree. No showmancing here.
I love Lea, but if that dance scores better than Sadie’s I’ll be pissed. And then I’ll be worried she’s not getting the votes. Seriously, it was a good dance, but it wasn’t markedly better than either Bethany or Janel.
Okay, we can count on Julianne again to be a downer. In this case that might be a good thing. If CAI goes higher than 8 I might have to fly to LA and slap a bitch.
So, CAI seriously thinks that Lea’s dance was better than Bethany’s and as good as Sadie’s?? She’s been on crack all night. She should consider rehab.
Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson were on The Real today. Alfonso talked about the Carlton dance and how he thinks if first prevented him from being on Dancing With The Stars. They also play a “Stuck In A Pickle” game. Cute interview!
Hey All! Be sure you catch “Wheel Of Fortune” tonight. Dancing With The Stars pros Sasha Farber, Witney Carson, Peta Murgatroyd, and Artem Chigvintsev are dancing on their show. Thanks to Sasha for the heads up.
Michael Waltrip tells Sacbee.com that doing Dancing With The Stars has been a lot of hard work, but, the experience has been “amazing”. Below is more. He’s such a great guy. More at the link on his racing adventures this weekend.
Waltrip said he’ll arrive in Roseville on Friday night for a sponsors’ dinner; on Saturday morning, he and “Dancing with the Stars” partner Witney Carson will find a suitable dance space in Roseville to practice for Monday’s show.
“The producers of the show asked me if I’d be interested in competing and I said yes almost instantly,” Waltrip said. “Then I hung up and said, ‘Shoot, I don’t know how to dance.’ ”
Despite low scores each week, Waltrip has advanced through four eliminations. He said this week’s theme is disco, so the boogie shoes will be put to good use.
“This whole dancing thing has been way out in left field for me,” Waltrip said. “But the experience has been amazing. It’s a lot of hard work to get the routines down. It’s been crazy, and I can’t believe how much better I’ve gotten, and that’s because of my great partners.”
Waltrip has dedicated himself to the dancing competition much as he did when he was a driver and now as a car owner for Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers. Bowyer is 18th in the Sprint Cup standings and Vickers is 22nd. Waltrip, who has driven three Sprint Cup races this season, is 45th.
Wow, everyone is getting a tiny bit hosed this week in terms of either song or style – in some cases both. Except for Janel of course. The pimpage increases – do wish they’d quit trying so hard to make her happen and just let the show evolve more organically. All you screamin’ Val fans whining and crying about Derek asking Colbie to sing while he and Beth danced can STFU now. Not only did she get a dance very close to what she’s trained in, she got the artist singing for her this week (rumor, anyway) – and that artist is also guest judge! Much more preferential treatment than Derek going to a friend and asking her to sing. I expect that the hypocritical among you won’t be satisfied, regardless. Too bad, so sad.
Actually, giving Lea “Broadway” is pretty obnoxious too, considering that she just had contemporary – but I think she could use two good weeks in a row. She’s not getting the pimpage that Janel is. I like her a lot and think she has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, doing Broadway doesn’t really give Val the opportunity to fix her posture problems that she’s had in ballroom/latin numbers.
Rumor going around that Joey Fatone is singing Jonathan and Peta’s song – for reals? Too much weirdness for me this week.
ETA: Mike and Antonio…the latter is totally screwed, I’m thinking. What a craptastic song.
ETA2: So, they won’t show Tommy’s “salute” on camera, but will give him songs which heavily imply the same? :::rolls eyes:::
Janel and Artem (Val) – Burlesque (“Mama Knows Best” by Jessie J )
Jonathan and Peta (Allison) – Jitterbug (“Rock this Town” by The Stray Cats )

Access Hollywood has coverage of the switch up couples meeting up for the first time for rehearsals. This is fun. Check it out.
ETA: Here is Antonio and Allison meeting…
