Dancing with the Stars Season 9 Cast Rumor – Ashley Hamilton

This one is stated by TVFanatic.com as FACT – but I’ll believe it when I hear it from Tom Bergeron. We’ve been through this game before, haven’t we??  🙂

Ashley Hamilton is the first celebrity to be named as a competitor on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.

The 34-year old’s father, actor George Hamilton, actually appeared on the competition in 2006.

He’s oddly cute, in a nerdy way. I could watch him dance. 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

The Emmys – DWTS versus SYTYCD

Derek Hough and Julianne Hough

In my opinion – there’s no “there” there. 🙂  But before I get into that, let me show you what got my goat, just a little bit – from the LA Times, The Envelope:

So You Think You Can Dance” once again leads the Emmy nominations for choreography, leaving “Dancing with the Stars” as an Emmy wallflower.  The Fox summer smash about everyday folk vying for a chance to dance has won the Emmy for the last two years in a row, while the ABC hit that pairs celebrities with professional dancers has been an Emmy also-ran for three years running.

This year, “So You Think You Can Dance” earned four of the six slots. While Wade Robson – who won this race last year and in 2007 – is not among the “SYTYCD” crew nominated this year, his 2007 co-winner – Mia Michaels – did land a nod. Also contending are Dmitry Chaplin, Tyce Diorio, and the team of Tabitha D’umo and Napoleon D’umo.

Derek Hough and Julianne Hough are the only nominees for teaching celebrities how to kick up their heels on “Dancing With the Stars.” Tony Award winner Rob Ashford (“Thoroughly Modern Millie”) rounds out the roster, landing his first Emmy nod for choreographing the Oscars.

Ya know, I understand having your favorite of the nominees. I do – DWTS. For whatever reason, I just can’t get that excited about So You Think You an Dance. I watch it, and enjoy it – but I won’t cuss up a storm if I’m out and my TiVo fails. 🙂 What bugs just a little bit is when journalists make invalid comparisons to pump up their favorite and, IMO, misrepresent a situation. This shouldn’t surprise me at all, given the state of our media, but whatever.

First, the author says that on SYTYCD “everyday folk” are vying for a chance to dance. They may be unknown, but they aren’t “everyday” – saying they are “everyday folk” implies that everyone can dance like a Kapono, given half a chance. Um, NO. That’s like saying Adam Lambert is an everyday person. The people who compete on SYTYCD are great DANCERS by the time you get to the top 20 – heck, by the time you get to Vegas. On SYTYCD, choreographers are choreographing for extremely capable, albeit unknown, dancers. As a result, the choreography is more intricate, and generally more creative (because it CAN be) than what you typically see on DWTS. Granted, the dancers might be outside their area of specialty from time to time, but they have stamina, creativity, flexibility, rhythm….a whole host of qualities that are often absent in the celebrities from DWTS. Often with hilarious results. 🙂

SYTYCD Top 10

The author does peg DWTS correctly – celebrities paired with professional dancers.  But the comparison between the shows is apples and oranges.  Accomplished dancers being choreographed by accomplished choreographers versus total novice celebrities (and often people with NO rhythm, coordination, stamina, you name it) being taught by professional dancers.  Granted, most of these dancers are amazing choreographers – but rarely can they choreograph as intricate and creative dance as what you might see on SYTYCD, for the simple reason that they are supposed to be in the business of making their novice partner look good. That means choreographing to their partners ability…or lack thereof.   For that reason, it’s a comparison that doesn’t work.  Just look at Derek and Julianne’s nomination – choreographed and danced by two professionals – that dance is one of the exceptions on that show, not the rule. SYTYCD has, on average ten dances per week (or more) danced by very good dancers, choreographed by first rate choreographers.  DWTS, on the other hand, has if we are very lucky one professionally choreographed AND performed dance per week. It’s a rare thing that a celebrity can dance the type of choreography seen on SYTYCD.  By the very numbers alone, SYTYCD should have more nominations.  More dances, more nominations.

The only remotely valid comparison – and it’s still a stretch – is total nominations.  Dancing with the Stars got more nominations than any other reality program, if I read it correctly.  I say this comparison is also a stretch because shows like the Amazing Race aren’t likely to have submissions in the Hair, Make-Up, Musical direction, etc categories (although Phil Keogan always looks lovely 🙂 ).  A show that is filmed in the middle of nowhere (Survivor) or globe trotting (TAR) isn’t going to be eligible in as many categories as sound stage shows (American Idol, SYTYCD, or DWTS).

At the end of the day, I’m glad that they have the reality category even though the shows in the category are so varied compared to, say, the drama category.  I think DWTS, SYTYCD, Survivor, American Idol, and The Amazing Race are all first rate, entertaining shows.  I watch and enjoy all of them.  I just don’t care for the comparison of numbers within the category and the subsequent labeling of one show as “wallflower” or (as I’ve seen in other places) “the best”.  Apples and Oranges.

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 Cast Rumor – Greg Louganis

This rumor is, so far, only Twitter-based. I got nothing else on it – yet. 🙂

Tweet Greg Louganis

Very interesting, IMO. I think I would be all for this one. Give him to Karina, I think.

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 Cast – Announcement set for August 17

UPDATE: Check out the latest Dancing with the Stars Season 9 cast rumors here.

UPDATE 2: It’s official, check out the cast of Dancing with the Stars Season 9. Nice to see lots of the cast were on our rumor list.

Tom Bergeron

Yay!! Not much longer now and we’ll find out which (and how many) celebrities will be on the show for the 9th season.  The Nashville Examiner says that Tom Bergeron will make the cast announcement on Good Morning America on August 17th.

So, does anyone have any special wishes in terms of celebrity?  Have a favorite pro that you’re praying gets a good partner? My wishes are simple:

  • I want Derek to get someone he’ll sizzle (and go far) with
  • I want Maks to get someone with backbone that is good, but gives him a hard time 🙂
  • I want Kym to get someone who will last a while and who isn’t old enough to be her father or a football player
  • I want Mark to get someone who will challenge him (i.e. non-olympian or person with NO  previous dance experience – but NOT another Kim K.)
  • I want Jonathon to get someone younger than his norm
  • I want Cheryl to get Kym’s typical partner 😉
  • Karina? Give her someone who has a shot for a change
  • I want to see Lacey dance with Derek, really – she’s gotten interesting celebs her two times out, she’ll likely get one again
  • Chelsie…hmmmm.  I dunno, she did great with Ty. She’s a toss up. I expect her to fill the Julianne slot.
  • Tony had two good partners this past season, but he’s been under utilized so give him another good one. Or at least, one who appears to be good on paper. 😉
  • Anna has a guaranteed shot at a celebrity, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be good – I would say they have to give her someone tall, but she danced great with Derek and he’s no giant. Any suggestions?
  • Did I not mention your favorite? Tell me.  I personally am not a big Alec/Edyta/Louis fan, but I don’t dislike them at all. Plus, Louis is working for So You Think You Can Dance, so I think it unlikely he’ll be back. Particularly since SYTYCD is going to a two season per year format and will be overlapping with DWTS on tuesday nights this coming season.

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 Shakeup??

I don’t think I like the sound of this “DWTS shakeup” business.  According to “In Entertainment”, there are going to be 16 couples with two couples voted off each of the ten weeks.  Why do you mess with a winning formula?? Are the American people really so easily bored?  I don’t think so!! Anyway, I don’t dig the idea.

Dancing with the Stars Emmy Nominations

Congratulations to Dancing with the Stars for it’s Emmy Nomination for best reality competition program!!!!  Competition in this category includes:

  • Amazing Race (hasn’t lost since 2003)
  • American Idol
  • Project Runway
  • Top Chef
  • Keep in mind that these nominations are going to include Season 7 and maybe 6 – not season 8. I’m going out on a limb and calling it for TAR again.  It’s definitely a favorite. My runner up is DWTS – I can’t even remember who the winner was for American Idol for the nominated season.  Oh, wait – that was the season with the Davids’ right? Yeah, I’m going with DWTS.

Derek and Julianne Hough were also nominated for their choreography of their Jive to Great Balls of Fire during Season 7’s Design a Dance.  Sorry to SYTYCD fans, I’m calling for either Derek and Julianne or the Academy Awards.  Yes, I’m a Derek fan, but I’m also a long time watcher of award shows. Anytime you get multiple nominations for one show in one category, the odds are very high you will split your votes, leaving the win to the outsiders.  Of course, I’m rooting for Derek and Jules – for one of the more memorable dances on that show.

Miley Cyrus Sweet 16 Celebration at Disneyland

And last, but certainly not least, my prediction/wish/prognostication begins to bear out. Tom Bergeron is nominated for host, as is Phil Keogan from TAR (first time nominee), Ryan Seacrest, Heidi Klum, Jeff Probst and the peeps from Top Chef. Sorry John. 🙂 I really want Phil to win (because he’s hot 🙂 ), but I’m going to bet on Probst. As a side note, if you watch Survivor and don’t read the blogs Probst writes during the run of the show you’re missing out. Seriously – dude is hilarious. I wish Tom would do it, I bet he would be great.

    DWTS Season 8 Celebrity Roundup – July 16, 2009

Shawn Johnson has a few things going on – narrowing down college choices, for one. No surprise, she chooses California schools. I sure don’t blame her.  UCLA or Stanford, Shawn?  I think Stanford may be the way to go, but that’s just me.  Apparently, she can’t compete, but she’d like to coach.

    shawnjohnson-college

According to the Des Moine Register, Shawn also has a big show in Iowa on July 26 – I’ve read elsewhere that this is a kind of thank you to her fans for voting her champion of DWTS Season 8. It’s not mentioned in this particular article, and I’m too lazy right now to find a link. 🙂  Anyway, Gilles, Cheryl, Kristi Yamaguchi, Steve-O, Mark and Derek are just a few of the names being bandied about as participants.  I’m assuming, based on those names and the inclusion of the Ballas Hough Band, that Mark will dance with Shawn and Kristi, and that Lacey will also be there to dance with Steve-O.  Gilles and Cheryl will, of course (IMO) partner up again.  But who will Derek dance with? Or is he just singing? I can tell you one thing, if I find out that he dances with Cheryl and/or Lacey I will be SERIOUSLY regretting sitting at home instead of driving myself to Des Moine.  🙂

Speaking of Gilles, I haven’t really been keeping close watch on him, but he’s apparently getting ready to announce something rather big (minds out of the gutter, ladies).  What is he talking about? I’m assuming it’s a lead role in either TV or Movies.

    Gilles Tweet

In any case, I can’t wait to find out what he’s talking about. While I may not follow him closely, I think he was a great dancer, gorgeous and he sure seems like a hell of a nice guy. I do know that he was on vacation recently with his family – I read something about Monte Carlo and the beach, etc. I also know that I previously reported on him being present at the opening of one of Cheryl’s new dance studios.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Melissa Rycroft is engaged to be married to her boyfriend (ahem – fiance) Ty.  Apparently, she is the anti-bridezilla – and I believe it.  She seems like the girl next door, laid back type.

    melissa-rycroft

Also, about a month ago now, it was reported that Melissa joined Good Morning America as a special correspondent.  Apparently, she’ll do 8 to 10 stories over the course of the summer. She’s done a story or two since then – I have not seen them, but I’ve heard comment that she’s a natural. Good for her – I was never a Melissa fan on DWTS, but I loved her on the Bachelor and I wish her all the success in the world.

That’s all for now – I’ll come back in a day or two with more news from the Stars of DWTS Season 8.

DWTS Season 9 Cast Rumor – Debi Mazar

Yes, yes, yes, I know I already reported on the rumor about Debi Mazar (Entourage) dancing on Season 9. But now, I ain’t the only one, aside from Debi herself, that is. 🙂  Reality TV Scoop has picked up this story and made it a bit more solid than it was before.  Will she join up? Do you want her to?

    Debi Mazar

I do – love her on Entourage.  She’ll need a Derek or a Maks- type partner, though, I thinking.  And Derek might be too short (and too young), so I’m definitely thinking Maks.  A tough talking Jersey girl will definitely be fun to watch with Maks.  Speaking of Entourage, what about Jeremy Piven (provided he cuts the sushi) or Adrian Grenier (:::swoon:::)?? Thoughts?? I’ve included pics of the two male Entourage stars below – are there other people you favor for the Cast of Season 9?

An Emmy for Dancing with the Star’s Tom Bergeron??

14th Annual Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books - Day 1

Nominations come out on Thursday and MSNBC’s Test Pattern (by Gael Cooper) thinks Tom’s time has come. And you know what? So do I. Tom does a great job every season, very fast on his feet and always getting in a great shot or three. 🙂 With Bruno as one of the judges, he has his work cut out for him at times making sure that everything moves smoothly and, as Gael points out, family friendly. Call Lil’ Kim a tramp? Saying that Kim is alive and well in Gilles pants? How about when Len pulls out one of his veddy British euphemisms? Spotted Dick anyone?

Tom is hilarious – give the man an Emmy already.  🙂   Do you have a favorite Tom funny?? Tell us.

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 – Michael Flatley in for Len??

    Celtic Tiger At Wembley Arena

I really, really, really hope this isn’t true. As cranky as Len can be (and he is particularly hard on my favorites, it seems 🙂 ), I really don’t want him to be replaced, even temporarily.  I do understand the possible health reasons, but I’m going to hope and pray that Len is all better and back in the center seat on DWTS in the fall.  Anyway, here are some excerpts from the article from “Irish Central” that popped up for me this morning:

Multiple sources confirmed to IrishCentral what has been a flurry of Internet buzz — that Flatley is being considered as a replacement for judge Len Goodman, who recently announced that he was recovering from treatment for prostate cancer.

Flatley has already appeared as a guest judge on the show, and was a huge hit with viewers. An industry source told IrishCentral that “Len would be almost impossible to replace, and we don’t want to replace him. But his health comes first. If he decides he needs the rest and wants to step down, how could we do better that Michael Flatley?”
