Choreography with Cheryl and Maks!
Princess Heidi made an excellent point about my last post: The good, the bad, and the incredible hot choreography, stating that I was talking more about the execution than the actual choreography! And I do agree…all the pros are phenomenal choreographers and it really is up to the celebrities to pull it off. Therefore, when I talk about the choreography of the dances, I am referring to the technical aspect of how well the celebrities pull off the pros choreography!
THE GOOD
Season 8: Gilles Marini, Argentine Tango
Cheryl is one of my favorite choreographers on the show! I think this dance clearly shows what an argentine tango is supposed to be 🙂 Slow then fast and always sexy! Gilles did an amazing job playing the part and partnered Cheryl very well!
THE BAD
Season 8: Denise Richards, Samba
Maks is an amazing dancer and choreographer! I’m also a big fan of Denise Richards so I was excited about this pairing! However, Denise could never pick up the musicality of Maks’ choreography! She doesn’t have any hip action and her footing was always one step behind Maks’!
THE INCREDIBLY HOT
Wade Robeson has got to be one of the greatest choreographers of all time! I absolutely love this piece he created and we have some of SYTYCD alums!
What other dances are you guys interested in seeing! Look for the next post on Monday or tweet me (JeanneSchrodt) with ideas 🙂
Well, I think Derek and Cheryl are the best choreographers on the show. Yes, I know I have a bias toward Derek, but one of the reasons why he’s my favorite is because he is the most musical of the pros – his steps always fit well with the music. He’s exciting to watch. He is a musician who plays at least five instruments – and you can see him sing along as he’s dancing much of the time. That says, to me, that he designs his dances for his parter AND to go with the music. I don’t think I need to be objective to say he’s the best, along with Cheryl. 🙂
Just look at the team dances for the last two seasons. Those are examples of what Cheryl and Derek can do together. Team Paso was just amazing – reportedly, that was Derek. Team Tango – Derek and Cheryl, I think – although supposedly Ty wanted to take his shirt off. 🙂
Derek’s flaw, IMO, is that his choreography is occassionally too intricate and difficult for his celebrity partner to pick up in the time they have. Maybe it was a question of time, but there are one or two dances with Lil’ Kim (Salsa – at the bottom of the stairs – extremely difficult) that if Derek had choreographed down to Kim just a little bit (like MANY of the other pros do a little too much at times, especially the women) they might have gotten a couple scores that were higher – although the discussion of whether the judges judge based on who they want to advance is another story. 🙂 Derek and Kim’s Paso is one of my all time favorites and, IMO, deserved a 30.
Oh, and don’t get me started on Stars of Dance. Hate it most of the time. Why? Because if you have time to fill why not go back to the old style Pro Dances where ALL of them dance and NOT to a musical guest so that the camera stays on them.
Heidi, I totally agree with you that Cheryl and Derek are the best choreographers on the show! They both musically amazing! I do agree that Derek sometimes makes his dances too difficult for his partner to catch on. However, I will give him credit that he never dumbs them down so that it’s to easy!
I love Stars of Dance when they are creative! However, when they brought Carmen Electra on; I had to question what the hell they were thinking! I love watching the pros dance so I think they should go back to that and if they want to have a musical guest then do relay dances to keep the camera on at all times…or at least 90% of them time!
