Dancing with the Stars Season 10 – Premiere Date!

Yes, this date has been mentioned before by Tom Bergeron, but it appears to be Official. According to the Orlando Sentinel – who I assume gets a ABC Press Release like every other media outlet:

ABC also announced that “Dancing With the Stars,” its most popular series, will start its 10th season on March 22. There will be a two-hour show that night, and a two-hour show March 29. The scores will be averaged from both shows, and the lowest-scoring team will be ejected March 30. (”Dancing” hosts Samantha Harris and Tom Bergeron are shown in this ABC photo by Bob D’Amico.)

The show will air at 8 p.m. Mondays and 8 p.m. Tuesdays — which means that “Dancing” will run against Fox’s “American Idol.” The latest celebrities will be announced later, ABC said.

No mention of the number of couples, and it *sounds* like only one couple will be eliminated in the second week. Also note the air times for both shows – the tuesday show normally starts at 9 pm eastern time, not 8. Direct competition with American Idol – hasn’t it always competed with AI on tuesdays? Or am I mis-remembering?

Granted our press corp are often sloppy about reporting and word selection, but the author of this blog says that scores from the first two mondays will be “averaged” – that’s a pretty big departure from the norm as well. Usually they’re just added together and the low score goes home. Things that make you go “hmmmm…” 🙂

Dancing with the Stars Season 10 Rumor of the Day – Dirt Nasty

Dirt Nasty??  I have NO clue who this guy is, but according to his twitter, DWTS is talking to him about being on the show. Um, okay. 🙂

She should be on DWTS!!! Season 10 – The Campaigns.

In the last couple seasons of this show, one thing has struck me as interesting. It may be interesting to no one else, but it is interesting to me. 🙂  There are little (and sometimes big) campaigns to get fan favorites on DWTS.

Take last season, for example.  We had a fan of Beth Horn (aka Venom) from American Gladiators on this site telling us on a semi-regular basis that she should be on the show.  And it wasn’t just him – there was a full out Facebook campaign to get Beth on the show.  This season I’ve seen campaigns for Crystal Chappell – soap actress recently from the cancelled Guiding Light and Laurell Holloman  an actress recently seen in The L Word.  The latter I just noticed today; there is a write-in campaign at her website (I’m not a member so I can’t see what is being said and done).  Crystal’s fans have been at if for a while and have left numerous comment on this site and probably others. (We don’t mind – keep them coming. 🙂 )

Now, I’m not talking about celebs who decide they need to be on the show and launch a campaign directed at the producers to get on the show, I’m talking about campaigns that appear to originate with the fans of a given celebrity. Sometimes the celeb has said they’d like to do it, other times I’m not so sure. So, assuming the celebrity would actually do the show if a campaign were successful – does anyone think these campaigns have a chance of working? I’m seriously asking, because I just don’t know.  The three women I’ve mentioned seem like they would be a good fit for the show – I’ve only heard of Crystal because of Guiding Light, the other two are unknowns. They actually have fanbases so they aren’t complete unknowns, so that is good.

So, people, lay it on me – answer the following questions:

– Do you think these campaigns have a shot?

– Are there other campaigns out there that we’re not aware of?

– What are the pros and cons for the producers of the show to pick someone that originated from a campaign?

– Has anyone been involved in a successful campaign?

I’ll go first.  I think they have a shot. Why not? The producers are always looking for people and what could be better than someone who has people who desperately want to see them on the show?  It’s all about ratings, right?

I know there are other campaigns – I’ve seen signs of them but I can’t seem to dig them up right now. You have no idea how hard it is to randomly google DWTS Campaigns. It doesn’t work. 🙂

Pros and cons. Hmmmm…I said one pro above.  Cons? Well, you could get so overwhelmed by a very vocal minority that you pick someone who isn’t all that. That isn’t that big, but what if you toss someone that was actually better overboard? Other than that, I can’t think of too many problems with listening to fans of the show. Can anyone else?

Those of you involved in the campaigns I mentioned – why do you want your favorite on the show? Have you any reason to believe that you will be successful – like have you heard anything positive from your celebrity? Call me curious. Use this as your chance to really pimp your favorite. 🙂

So tell me – what are your thoughts on campaigns?  Do really big campaigns set up a celeb for ringer status? I don’t think that would be the case for the three women I mentioned, but could that be the case for others? Or is it a given if someone is that popular and they want to be on the show their fans don’t have to campaign and they’re already a ringer?  Most of all – I would be curious to hear if there are other underground movements out there working to get their favorites on the show.

DWTS Season 10 – Rumor Roundup Part II

Okay, where was I?  My first post from yesterday on this topic  ended with Lou Ferrigno, so I’ll pick it up from there.  As I mentioned yesterday, the rumors about who will be on DWTS often start a couple seasons before they actually appear on the show, so we decided to list those rumors from the last several months once again – just in case. 🙂

But first we have a NEW case of a celeb wanting to be on the show and telling everyone she wants to be on the show, at least according to OK! Magazine:

Former Boy Meets World star and current The Dish host Danielle Fishel aspires to be on Dancing With The Stars in 2010.

“I’ve told them really straight forwardly that I really want to do the show, and unfortunately they’ve got thousands of other celebrities that feel the exact same way,” she tells me. “There are so many people who want to do that show because it’s a real classy show, especially for reality TV. I told them I’m interested, they know I’m interested, and hopefully one day they’ll think I’d be a good fit for the show. “

Her dream partner is Maksim.

“He is the biggest, manliest dancer they have on that show, and I think for me to have a male dance partner, I would want someone that I felt very feminine next to. I think he’s the manliest dancer on the show.”

Okay, on with the roundup:

Leslie Jordan – he’s that cute little comedian with the southern accent.  As I said originally, this was likely wishful thinking on Leslie’s part – plus he might even be shorter than Chelsie. 🙂  This is one of the rumors that I desperately wanted to be true.

Heh, I just realized that I called both Debi Mazar AND Aaron Carter in July. Dang, that was early – which means that anything I hear NOW could also be true.

Greg Louganis – This was according to Celebuzz and I was so-so on it at the time, in terms of likelihood, but I think Greg’s appearance on last season in that Olympian segment solidified his chances  to be on either this season or in the fall.  I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Greg in 2010 – one season or the other. 🙂

Jordan Knight – this one was twitter based, but then that’s how Debi Mazar and Aaron Carter started out. Who’s to say Jordan wasn’t on the list, but Aaron got picked instead. Jordan could be this seasons Aaron.

Dean McDermott – around the same time that Jordan was being rumored, there was a ton of talk about Dean – often by his wife.  I believe they did talk to him so maybe we’ll see him this year.

Beth Horn – this one was more of a campaign to get her on the show than any real rumor she would indeed be on.  I don’t know if campaigns have any impact whatsoever, and I never saw anything other than campaigning to indicate she might be on the show. That casts a good deal of doubt on the odds.  We’ll see!!

LOL – I found the Kelly Osbourne thing and called a few things correctly.  I said Mark or Derek as her partner and she was rumored to be originally partnered with Mark before she told producers that she wanted someone she could push around – so she was subsequently moved to Louis.  Good call, Kelly. 🙂

Shari Sheppard, Alicia Sacramone, Andrew Firestone and Aubry O’Day were on a list of rumored cast members that I had not seen anywhere else other than the single blog – and that list included some HIGHLY implausible people, so I’m thinking it was more of a wish list than actual, potential celebs.  I could be wrong.

Jeremy Roenick, Tori Spelling and Lynda Carter – these were either said jokingly or were strictly twitter related.  I think Lynda is the only plausible one at this point.

Let’s not forget the ubiquitous Paula Abdul rumor. That one was so prevalent before last season that I’m not even going to provide a link. Heck, Conrad Greene basically admitted that he asked her.

LaToya Jackson – it was widely reported that the only reason she wasn’t on last season was because of Michael’s death (Jermaine was also occassionally included in this rumor). LOTS of people are pretty convinced that she will be on this coming season and that she’ll demand Derek as a partner.  At the point this becomes true, I won’t know whether to jump off a cliff or be intrigued by the possibility.

Brandy and her brother – could have been mass confusion or a mix up. Who knows.

Dan Cortese – Dan was told – and proclaimed to the world on Twitter – that he was in the running for the last guy spot last season.  That makes him a possibility for this season, in my book.  I’m cool with this because he’s hot. 😉

Jennifer Grey – Jennifer was rumored for last season as I mentioned in a post about Joanna Krupa (and correctly called her partner as Derek), and she is also being rumored for this season. I think she’s likely to show up sooner or later.

That should bring us pretty much up to the “current” rumors as I’ve been posting then since Season 9 ended.  Once we get farther along, I’ll make a complete list of previous rumors and current rumors. I do like lists, you know. 🙂

Dancing with the Stars Season 10 Odds

I love how everything you can imagine now has odds given to it, including Dancing with the Stars. On online betting site just posted the early odds for Dancing with the Stars season 10. Yes, this is really early since we still don’t know who the professionals will be for Dancing with the Stars season 10. So, the odds are all based around the professionals that could be on DWTS 10. Check them out:
Derek Hough +600
Mark Ballas +700
Julianne Hough +750
Cheryl Burke +800
Maksim Chmerkovskiy +800
Lacey Schwimmer +800
Chelsea Hightower +1000
Dmitry Chaplin +1200
Karina Smirnoff +1400
Kym Johnson +1400
Alec Mazo +1600
Louis van Amstel +1800
Edyta Sliwinska +1800
Anna Demidova +2000
Tony Dovolani +2500
Anna Trebunskaya +2800
Jonathan Roberts +3000
Ashly DelGrosso +3300
Elena Grinenko +4500
Inna Brayer +4500
Corky Ballas +6600

Looks like Heidi’s not the only one that likes Derek Hough. This is a pretty interesting list since it basically compares the “star quality” of the pros I think. Nice to see that it corresponds really well with our list of Top Female DWTS Pros and Top Male DWTS Pros quite well.

Dancing with the Stars Season 10 – Rumor Roundup

….and a couple new rumors as well. The big one that I just saw today, that requires a bathtub of salt, is Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek will be on this season. This is a random twitter rumor – if it solidifies more, I’ll let you all know. 🙂

Okay, that was quick – this rumor about Jonathan Frakes seems to originate from a DWTS Blog and also included Genie Francis. It’s third or fourth person so…not likely. But hey, I do well on getting the cast right because I report EVERYTHING I hear. 🙂

Regular readers of this blog know we post all the gossip we hear about the new casts of DWTS each season. Every season there are people we hear solid (and not so solid) rumors about. The thing about this show is that often someone is rumored before one season yet shows up on a later season. So we thought it would be a good idea to recap rumors we heard a while ago that haven’t panned out yet. Just revisit them and see if they still seem likely. So, here we go!

Bethany Frankel – from Real Houswives. I’m thinking no right now. Never heard anything about her other than the initial interview where she said she would love to do it.

Suge Knight – still possible, IMO. Seems like something the producers would pull.

Danny Gokey – former AI contestant.  I’m thinking no, although it’s more likely this season than last since I don’t know how much post-Idol success he’s had.

Erin Andrews – ESPN Reporter and one of John’s favorites. 🙂 She was rumored a long time ago for 2010.  I don’t know if this one is still possible, if she is still interested in doing it.

Kurt Angle – TNA Superstar, it seemed fairly solid that Kurt was at least contacted about DWTS. What the end result of that was, who knows?

Dominique Moceanu – Olympian that was photographed with Tony Dovolani.  Simple fan photo? Or something more?

Vera Wang – the wedding dress designer rumor came from Marc Malkin from E! so I tend to give it a bit more weight than your average rumor.  I could be wrong and Marc could get his info the same place I do – Twitter. 🙂 That said – that rumor got kinda solid as we reported on June 17, 2009.

Lou Ferrigno – Lou was seriously blowing his own horn on this. He said he was in the running. Now, did his spilling the beans kill his chances, or did it just not work out for last season?  I believe he was also the one who got really pissed off when he wasn’t picked, so maybe that ruined his chances.

Okay, that’s all for right now!  There are a LOT more, so I”ll continue tomorrow in part II. I also have to continue my SCD versus DWTS series – I haven’t forgotten. You’ve been warned. 🙂

Maks and Jessica Simpson Win DWTS 2010

This is not even a rumor. It’s just People having a good time making predictions for 2010. However, it was too much fun to think about that I had to post it. Here’s their prediction:

Jessica Simpson has the BEST YEAR EVER. After winning Dancing with the Stars, she and pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy get engaged.

I would love to see Jessica Simpson on DWTS 2010. Paired with Maks would be fantastic. Although, maybe DWTS will pair her with Derek to get the blonde bombshell thing again this season. Nah, probably not 2 seasons in a row.

MY Top Male Professionals on DWTS

John challenged me to do this, despite my clear and obvious Hough bias. But it does say MY favorites, so these choices are all my own. As I said in response to comments on John’s post, being a great DWTS Pro is about more than just dance ability. I think several things are required: choreography skill, teaching ability and PERSONALITY (aka The “IT” Factor). And, of course, you have to be one hell of a dancer. I don’t dislike ANY of the pros, male or female, but I do have my clear favorites. 🙂 You all can guess my Number one, right? Say it with me:

  1. Derek, Derek, Derek – Derek is not only a great dancer and choreographer, but he’s one of the more charismatic people on TV right now.  When he’s on screen in a pro dance, I occasionally read about people who are not fans being annoyed because he’s “distracting” – I have to laugh, because that “distracting” behavior is called charisma and “IT”.  He draws the eye. As a fan of old movies (thanks, Grandma), he reminds me of Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. He has never finished lower than sixth and he was only as low as sixth once, with Shannon. He has a way of taking celebs with either baggage or no fanbase (or both) and turning them into respectable dancers – or at the very least, making them likable. His celebs are always labeled as “disliked or likely to be disliked” (Joanna, Lil’ Kim) or as likely to leave early (everyone else) – yet he never leaves early. As for his choreo – two words: Futuristic Paso Doble.  Wait…three words. 🙂 (John’s Comment: See the rest of Heidi’s Derek bias on Pure Derek Hough)
  2. Louis Van Amstel – yes, this shocks me too.  Louis was one of the faceless male pros who were there and gone most seasons.  But holy cow – his work with Kelly Osbourne, and their relationship, was just a joy to watch. Kelly would never be the best dancer – in fact, I would argue that she was no better than 6th or 7th place – but people LOVED her and I think a lot of that is attributable to Louis.  There is no question the man can dance, and he’s a very good choreographer (although I think my #3 did better on the tour), but I think it was only this season that his personality and teaching ability came to the forefront.  Lovely, lovely guy.
  3. Maksim Chmerkovskiy – cranky as hell at times, the man also has IT.  He really won me over with his work on last years tour – brilliantly done.  He also manages to survive what I think is a crappy edit nearly every season – sure he’s blunt, but his partners seem to love him. And he writes a great blog, which I appreciate. 🙂  I also love how he treats Derek and Mark as slightly annoying little brothers – very sweet to watch on tour.  The feeling I get from Maks is that he’s all bark and no bite.
  4. Mark Ballas – I was tempted to leave Mark off the list, although he’s always been one of my favorites.  Why? Well, maybe it’s just my perception, but I thought he acted badly when dancing with Melissa Joan Hart.  He seemed upset that they weren’t doing that well – whatever the reason for his behavior, it seemed TO ME to be poor sportsmanship.  He’s had two Olympians as partners – surely he can suck it up when dancing with someone who is trying hard, but isn’t an Olympian??  Anyway, despite that, Mark is a hell of a dancer and seems to be a good teacher.  He gets a lot of flack for out dancing his partners (usually in the Jive, which I don’t think he can help), and he occasionally picks hellish costumes with polka dots,  but he is a very talented guy.
  5. Tony Dovolani – Tony doesn’t really impress me as a particularly great choreographer, but he’s a hell of a dancer and he’s very, VERY charming.  He’s just NICE.  I like him a lot.  He seems to work well with his partners, is a good teacher and is an all around good egg.

I think that only leaves Jonathan, Dmitry and Alec.  Dmitry and Alec suffer from an apparent lack of personality – notice I didn’t say that they don’t have a personality, just that it isn’t *apparent*. They are too quiet, and I don’t think either of them did a particularly good job in terms of choreography.  Doesn’t *everyone* know how Len feels about gimmicks, Dmitry??  As for Jonathan, he suffers as a result of drawing poor celebrities – how can I tell how good of a choreographer or teacher he is when he never stays on the show for long?  That said – he clearly has the patience of a saint.  And lord, when he’s dancing with his wife it’s a thing of beauty.

Okay, everyone, go ahead and tell me how wrong I am.  🙂  I can take it.

My Top Female Dancing with the Stars Pros

I’m sitting here waitig for the tires to be done on my car. New Years Eve football is on in the background and I decided it would be fun to write up a list of my favorite DWTS pros. I’ll just do the female pros and leave the male pros up to one of the other Pure DWTS female bloggers. I’m also not going to list all of the pros since I don’t have a list in front of me.

So, without further ado, here’s my list of favorite female DWTS pros:
1. Julianne Hough – Julianne is one of the major reasons that I started to love DWTS. Julianne and Apolo were fantastic together. I also loved how Julianne wasn’t afraid to make comments back to the judges. Not hateful or disrespectful, just disagreeing and playful. I loved it and missed it this last season.
2. Edyta Śliwińska – I just adore Edyta’s dancing. She’s not the best teacher and not the best choreographer, but if I think back on my favorite moments on DWTS Edyta has a number of them. Her long legs don’t hurt either. I really hope she can win a mirror ball trophy.
3. Kym Johnson – Donny was definitely a ringer, but Kym had been given such crap partners before that I didn’t mind too much. Plus, she was so fantastic with less than perfect dancers like Jerry Springer that I was so glad she could finally win. I could be wrong, but I bet she’s just as nice in person as she is on TV. The accent is nice as well.
4. Chelsie Hightower – I have a feeling that Chelsie is going to move up this list over time. I can’t get some of her ‘boy’ moments (like burping) out of my head, but I still love watching her dance. She brings the most out of her partners and I think truly loves dancing.
5. Karina Smirnoff – Karina is such an amazing dancer. Some of her back bends are unbelievable. I prefer to watch her in the pro dances, but she is stunning to watch dance.
6. Lacey Schwimmer – She’s a bit of a jerk at times, but as far as dancing she is very creative. However, I’d love to see her choreograph on SYTYCD where there aren’t rules.
7. Cheryl Burke – She is likely the best choreographer on this list so I couldn’t leave her off. However, her dancing doesn’t do much for me. I’m not sure why. I’m sure she’s technically great, but just isn’t as nice to watch as the others to me.

Ok, that’s the list off the top of my head of top female DWTS pros. Is there someone I’ve left off? How would you rank them?
