If Only We Had the DWTS Data…

Many of you might not realize this, but the Amazing Marianya (I think I just figured out her new nickname) has this incredibly spreadsheet she’s created for all the seasons of Dancing with the Stars. It has scores, music, type of star, etc etc etc. Yes, she’s a stats nerd and proud of it (at least she seems to be). That’s how she can answer anyone’s question about music and do all those posts looking back at previous uses of the music and previous scores to predict future scores.

The problem is that Marianya doesn’t have all of the data that we really need to be able to analyze Dancing with the Stars completely. If she could just get her hands on more data Courtney could do an even better job with her Dancing with the Stars Power Rankings (although she’s done pretty dang well with what she has). Princess Heidi could even point to these stats whenever they want to argue about the virtues of Derek Hough.

However, what is probably most important is that I could more easily predict the winner of Dancing with the Stars. To get us started here’s some theories about why people will win. If any of you have the data to support these theories, please let me know so we can add it to Marianya’s spreadsheet:

Times in Restroom – If we could just know how many times the stars and pros had to go to the restroom before they performed, I think we’d have a leg up on being able to predict their dancing ability. Cause of course, the nerves bring the best out of people.

Heartrate – Imagine if we could just have a heart monitor connected to each person. At regular intervals it could just post this data to their Twitter account and we could take the data from there. I think heart rate would be a really interesting indicator of a dancer’s success. They do it on the Tour de France. Why not on Dancing with the Stars?

Length of Hair – I’m pretty sure that if we ran a correlation on length of hair and rank on DWTS there would be a high correlation. Of course we’d need this data over time. For example, was Derek Hough more successful with the longer or the shorter hair? Karina Smirnoff would be interesting since she loves to do funky things with her hair.

Times on Entertainment Shows – We hear lots of complaining about certain stars getting more air time on TV (Donny was one of the best at this I think). Imagine if we had the data about how much TV time each star got on these Entertainment Shows. Marianya wouldn’t know what to do with that much data.

Leg length – Ok, maybe this one doesn’t matter. Or maybe it does. You can’t tell me that Ana’s Rhumba is as nice as Edyta’s. Sorry, she just doesn’t have the legs that are needed to do it right. (No offense to Ana. I’ve actually grown to really like her this season).

I’m sure there’s other important pieces of data that would keep Marianya up at night as she analyzes the data. Feel free to leave anything I missed in the comments. Check out this poll if you’re looking for a less scientific method of predicting the Dancing with the Stars season 10 winner, but what’s the fun in that?

DWTS Season 10, Week 9 – Media Bites

Just a couple random videos from the past two weeks.

This one has the potential to make one nauseous, but I found it to be hilarious. 🙂

This one I posted because Nicole sings to Derek in Italian at one point.

This one is still processing at the time I post.

DWTS Freestyles Season Eight & Nine

Check out the entire Dancing with the Stars Freestyle Videos Series as we cover the freestyle videos from every Season of DWTS!!

In past seasons it was not terribly uncommon for celebrities to drop out due to injuries, personal problems, etc. What is uncommon is for two celebrities to have to drop out at around the same time prior to the premiere of the season. Even more uncommon is for someone to be added into the lineup just days prior to the start of the series… though if that last minute addin is a ringer of sorts then I suppose it could work…

Season 8: Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani
Song: Gonna Make You by C+C Music Factory
Placement: 3rd Place

Season 8: Gilles Marini & Cheryl Burke
Song: Flashdance (What a Feeling) by Irene Cara
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 8: Shawn Johnson & Mark Ballas
Song: Do Your Thing by Basement Jaxx
Placement: 1st Place

Well, most people seem to be believe that “bigger is better”, that’s probably what many people in ABC were thinking when they made the decision to expand the cast to sixteen celebrities… granted with every decision made, there are bound to be consequences.

Still as diluted as this season started out, there were many memorable moments to be had…

Season 9: Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel
Song: I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Placement: 3rd Place

Season 9: Mýa & Dmitry Chaplin
Song: You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray
Placement: 2nd Place
Start at 1:26

Season 9: Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson
Song: Back in Business by Liza Minnelli
Placement: 1st Place

Dancing with the Stars, The Finale – Who’s Dancing What?

I can’t believe we’re at the finale already!  And Thank God, because I’m tired. 🙂  Of course the DWTS Season 11 rumors will start up in earnest on Wednesday, so I won’t get too much of a break.  Anyway, finding all three dances is going to be a bit challenging – I have to thank Anna Trebunskaya for just putting it all out there for me on twitter.  And I’d like to smack Derek Hough for being so uncommunicative at times (and, well, I think giving him a little smack on the behind would be kinda fun 🙂 ).

Here’s how I understand it goes – on Monday night they dance their judge’s choice dance, which is a dance the judges feel the didn’t excel at the first time around, and the freestyle. Then we vote. Then on Tuesday, all three dance their choice of dance to repeat. Interestingly, all three couples choose Argentine Tango – and if I remember correctly, all three had very different ones. Then Third Place is announced. Then the final two dance again – and I’m not sure how this dance was picked, but Maks uses the words “dance off”.

Evan/Anna
Monday: Viennese Waltz, Freestyle
Tuesday: Argentine Tango, Quickstep for Final 2

I keep wavering on this. A large part of me says that there is no way Evan is going to lose this. Another part of me says that a disaster freestyle could open it up for Nicole. And still another part of me says that the Derek/Nicole team may have more passionate fans than an Evan/Anna combo. The other three times Olympians won this, it was with a Ballas or a Hough – arguably the most popular pros. So, is it ONLY the Olympic thing going on? Or is it the combo of a Hough or Ballas with an Olympian?? For Kristi? She would have won with anyone. The other two? Tough call. And one of the chicks on the Insider pointed out that NONE of the other Olympians that won the show had a Nicole to deal with.

Nicole/Derek
Monday: Rumba, Freestyle
Tuesday: Argentine Tango, ??

I have a feeling that Nicole has gotten a hold of her nerves and that the rumba is going to be a vast improvement over the last one, which wasn’t actually “bad” to begin with. She can conquer it. Freestyle? Well, Derek is the king of creative choreography out of this bunch, but the boy is saying he’s fried. Plus, he’s set their bar so high that anything other than phenomenal (even if the other two have poor showings) will be a disappointment to some. No pressure, Derek. 🙂 But why am I talking about dancing like it matters?? 🙂 If Derek drops Nicole on her head their fans will just stay up even longer voting! Like I’ve said before, I think most people have already decided who they are voting for – and it will probably come down to Nicole versus Evan. Maybe. 🙂

Erin/Maks
Monday: Samba, Freestyle
Tuesday: Argentine Tango, V. Waltz for final 2 (??)

I dunno, I think the Argentine Tango was great, but stacked up against the other two AFTER voting has already happened? I’ll have to go watch all three dances again, but my sense was that after that initial leap, Erin’s was not as difficult, when compared to Nicole and Evan. (ETA: I went back and watched it again, and it was much simpler routine than Nicole’s) And ONLY the judges have a say here. They’re going to compare the footwork of all three and the “wow” factor of that jump has probably already worn off for them. Direct, head to head comparison may not be in their favor, particularly if they aren’t going first. This might have been a strategic error. Samba? Kinda worried about that one too, but we’ll see. Geez, there I go again, talking about the dancing like it matters. 🙂 Anyway, Erin has a bit of a leg up on rehearsal time this week – she’s the only one of the three that hasn’t had to travel for work.

The scoring is going to go one of two ways, I think – everyone gets essentially the same score. By “essentially” I mean no more than one point, maybe two between them. OR, they are going to underscore Erin because they think she is third place – unless of course she under performs then they won’t have to worry about it. This is on Monday. On Tuesday, after the first dance, the judges will essentially rank them based on who they think deserves to win – I predict Nicole/Evan tied at 30, with Erin getting a 28 or 29. I think Evan and Nicole will head to final two and then Evan will likely win (come on, Derek/Nicole fans, prove me wrong!!). Don’t confuse the producers having a favorite with the judges having opinions – I don’t think the producers care one way or the other who wins, but I’m pretty darn sure the judges do, and it will show in how they score the couples. That said – all three couples are doing well, so maybe they don’t care either! But I bet they have it narrowed to Nicole or Evan too. 🙂

DWTS Season 10 Week 9 – Results Show Video

Here’s some miscellaneous video from the results show – season’s almost over!!

Len’s Recap

Sarah Mclachlan performs with Dmitry, Kym, Lacey, Damian and, my favorite – Jonathan and Anna. Beautiful. John posted links to Sarah’s music in an earlier post.

Design a Dance – epic fail, IMO. Bring the pros back, please.

Rutgers Dance Team – sad that they feel the need to distinguish their part of Jersey from “The Jersey Shore”. I sure hope people didn’t really need that distinction. 🙂

DWTS Freestyles Season Four & Five

Check out the entire Dancing with the Stars Freestyle Videos Series as we cover the freestyle videos from every Season of DWTS!!

More tweaking happened come Season Four, including trying to create the DWTS version of “Barbie and Ken” 😉 A good portion of the formula from the previous season was carried over intact, the only real change is the time slot in an effort to avoid direct competition with FOX’s then juggernaut American Idol.

Season 4: Laila Ali & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Song: Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground) by The Jacksons
Placement: 3rd Place

Season 4: Joey Fatone & Kym Johnson
Song: Last Dance by Donna Summer
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 4: Apolo Anton Ohno & Julianne Hough
Song: Bust a Move by Young MC
Placement: 1st Place

Season Five brought about the most noticeable (unless you’re a dancing fiend like me and keep tabs of the comings and goings of the professional dancers) change to date: Samantha Harris went on maternity leave while Season Two’s Champ Drew Lachey stepped in.

This season also brought about TV Guide’s Most Shocking TV Moment of 2007: Sabrina Bryan being voted out mid way through the season.

Season 5: Marie Osmond & Jonathan Roberts
Song: Start Me Up by Rolling Stones
Placement: 3rd Place
Sorry there is no video available for this dance.

Season 5: Melanie Brown & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Song: The Way I Are by Timbaland feat Keri Hilson and D.O.E.
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 5: Hélio Castroneves & Julianne Hough
Song: Land of 1000 Dances by Wilson Pickett
Placement: 1st Place
Start at 1:43

DWTS Season 10, Week 9 – The Pros Blog

I happened upon Anna Trebunskaya’s video blogs at Radar Online!! Here’s the most recent one —-> Anna Trebunskaya with Evan, Nicole and Derek

Derek’s Blog at Ok! Magazine – this boy has me worried. 25 years old and skipping out on his own birthday party!

The cha cha was really special because Prince cleared his song “Kiss” for us to dance to. Prince said it was for Nicole and Nicole only, which was really cool. He’s an idol of Nicole’s. We had fun with the cha cha. We got a 29, probably losing a point because we used a chair in the beginning and Judge Len Goodman isn’t a fan of props.

As you saw on the show, I had a strained neck before performing in the semifinals. I have things happen to my neck all the time. For some reason, it’s a weak point where I often get injured. It hurt like crazy. I had been saying nothing had happened to me this season, which kind of jinxed it because that’s when I had the neck problem — crack! Oh, shoot, the semifinals, not good. But I got the best help I could — I went to an NHL hockey physical therapist who worked it out, iced it for 20 minutes and it freed up. It’s a miracle. Now I feel great.

Monday night, I also celebrated my 25th birthday. I’ve never been wished happy birthday so much in my entire life, ever. Everybody on the show, the entire audience sang happy birthday to me during a commercial break. And the icing on my cake was our great dances and scores. After the show, I celebrated at a club with friends like Mark Ballas; I blew out some candles and took a few pictures but I went straight home and went to bed by midnight. Nicole didn’t come with me to the club because her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton surprised her by flying in from Monaco so she wanted to spend the time with him. But I laughed so hard when she gave me her gift — a hand towel with the phrase “Sweet Sweat” on it. It’s a joke between us because yes, I do sweat a lot during all our rehearsals. Hey, dancing’s hard work!

And Maks from TV Guide – where he manages to keep most of his commentary about himself and Erin. Very refreshing. 🙂

I thought our Viennese waltz was great. The first step, Erin’s feet buckled. She was so nervous. I’ve never seen her this nervous and at the same time this pumped up. The combination of the two had a real weird reaction. The legs weren’t there, but she held it together and pulled off a great routine. We both laughed afterward. It was funny how discombobulated she got. The paso was so much fun. I was really upset by the package they showed before we danced. They compiled stuff on a really touchy subject with her parents. I was already on the floor for the dance and she left. I was like, “Oh no.” I looked backstage and Erin had tears going down, but she got back up. My mentality went from “Let’s prove something to everybody” to “Don’t worry about the competition. Just dance for us. Just let your emotions out on the dance floor.” And she did it. She tackled that paso like it was the last thing she’ll ever do in her life. There are pictures of the first couple seconds of the routine where we jump off the stage and she has this war-hero look on her face, like a superhero going in for the save. It was amazing and the entire dance was incredible. She was totally overpowering me, and that was OK. I usually let out a sound or whatever to get us going, but she just took off in the middle. It was awesome. I loved it. At the end, I didn’t slip. We landed at different times and I couldn’t save it, and that was it. I just didn’t want that to mar everything else she did. The pattern with the judges seems to be they have nothing constructive to say to her, so they would say something negative, and that’s not enough. I didn’t them to point fingers at her for it because she did nothing wrong, so right away, I said, “It’s not her fault; that’s my fault.” But it doesn’t matter whose fault it is because we’re a couple and we get one score for the two of us. I just didn’t want it put on her. Len didn’t like it, but he gave us a 10 for our Argentine tango last week, so now we just have to get 10s at the same time!

DWTS Freestyles Season Two & Three

Check out the entire Dancing with the Stars Freestyle Videos Series as we cover the freestyle videos from every Season of DWTS!!

When ABC saw the potential in DWTS they decided to move the show into the Spring 2006 lineup rather than wait til the summer. Keeping some of the original formula when picking celebrities (ex-boy band member, retired athlete, soap opera star, model and older gentlemen) they also stretched the demographics a bit more by casting younger and older and reaching out to other areas.

They also rearranged the scoring system. Rather than taking the current week’s judges scores and adding them to the previous week’s phone in votes (in Season One it was only one show a week)… they added a second show per week (aka the Results Show) and celebrities were eliminated based on current week’s judges votes and current week’s phone in votes.

Season 2: Stacy Keibler & Tony Dovolani
Song: Stayin’ Alive by Bee Gees
Placement: 3rd Place

Season 2: Jerry Rice & Anna Trebunskaya
Song: Celebration by Kool and the Gang
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 2: Drew Lachey & Cheryl Burke
Song: Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy by Big & Rich
Placement: 1st Place

With Season Two being so successful, ABC brought Season Three in for the Fall 2006 lineup. Keeping the gist of the original lineup in tact, their biggest question was how to keep the audience interested for the Results Shows? The answer: the Slim Fast Dance Challenge. This series within a series follows stay at home mom Tysonia Sichinga as she goes through the rigors of learning dances and prepping for a ballroom competition with her professional partner: Christian Perry.

With the success of Season’s One through Three, ABC wanted to capitalize on their pros further and introduced the first Dancing With the Stars Tour featuring various pros and celebs from the first three seasons.

Season 3: Mario Lopez & Karina Smirnoff
Song: It Takes Two by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock
Placement: 2nd Place
Start at 2:00

Season 3: Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke
Song: U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer
Placement: 1st Place

DWTS Freestyles Season One & Dance Off

Check out the entire Dancing with the Stars Freestyle Videos Series as we cover the freestyle videos from every Season of DWTS!!

In honor of Season 10’s finals we are going to take you down a path of memory lane of past Freestyle dances of the finalists over the past nine seasons (and one dance off).

Many thanks to Lori for the idea.

Dancing with the Stars premiered in the Summer of 2005 to rave reviews. Season One only began with six celebs and six pros… (Trista Sutter & Louis van Amstel, Evander Holyfield & Edyta Sliwinska, Rachel Hunter & Jonathan Roberts, Joey McIntyre & Ashly Costa and the following two below).

Season 1: John O’Hurley & Charlotte Jørgensen
Song: I’m So Excited by the Pointer Sisters
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 1: Kelly Monaco & Alec Mazo
Song: Let’s Get Loud by Jennifer Lopez
Placement: 1st Place
Start at 1:50

After the winner of Season One was crowned there was a massive viewer outcry in regards to the judges overscoring Kelly due to her connection to ABC. So producers capitalized on the passion of the audience and created a Dance Off held over the span of two days in September. The exception is that the viewers have total control over voting…

Dance Off: Kelly Monaco & Alec Mazo
Song: Get the Party Started by Pink
Placement: 2nd Place
Start at 2:25

Dance Off: John O’Hurley & Charlotte Jørgensen
Song: I Am What I Am as sung by Gloria Gaynor
Placement: 1st Place
