Pure DWTS – DWTS Fans, Let’s Talk “Black Swan”

Have any of you seen “Black Swan”?? If so, how did you like it? I am dying to see this movie! I keep hearing so many good reviews on it including this one which has a little mention on “Dancing With The Stars” in it from Caledoniannmercury.com.

It’s not your typical dance movieThink dance in mainstream culture since the ‘90s, and the following may well come to mind: Strictly Ballroom, Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars, Diversity on Britain’s Got Talent, Billy Elliot, various street dance movies both here and in the States, and umpteen clubbing anthems with flashy videos featuring breakdancers.

Black Swan is a drama – billed as a “psychological thriller” by producers – which touches on big themes: power, sex, control, doubt, family, discipline, sacrifice, rebellion. Ballet fans will love it, but those who think Sadlers Wells is an equestrian operation should also be hooked. Pigeonholing Black Swan as a dance movie is rather like calling The Merchant of Venice a play about giving blood.

It’s Darren Aronofsky’s best movieThe Wrestler was memorable for Mickey Rourke’s performance, and to a lesser degree Marisa Tomei’s, Requiem for a Dream displayed a flashy, original visual style, The Fountain flopped, but everything (performances, visual style, script) comes together for Aronofsky in Black Swan. He really hits his stride here.

It’s an Ensemble PieceJust as ballet requires a company, Aronofsky scores here in his casting with Hannah and Her Sisters star Barbara Hershey’s controlling mother, Winona Ryder’s fading starlet, Mila Kunis as Portman’s rival Nina and a creepy turn from Vincent Cassel as the artistic director. This film is not all about the star.

Having said that….To say it’s Natalie Portman’s best role when the competition includes playing Ashton Kutcher’s “friend with benefits” in No Strings Attached, doing the whole “Hi…You Must be Darth” chatting up as Padme in the Star Wars prequels and V for Vendetta doesn’t say that much. But all the actory cliches are true here – The Role No One Else Could Play, The Role Which Will Define Her Career, The Performance of a Lifetime etc. If Natalie Portman doesn’t walk away with the Best Actress Academy Award, it would feel like larceny. She and Aronofsky talked about the role for around ten years and the discipline, poise, preparation and change of character required for a principal ballerina in Swan Lake is all up on screen in her performance.

Cor. That soundtrack. There’s a reason Swan Lake has been shown on telly every Christmas since before the days of Morecambe and Wise, has been given the all-male treatment by Matthew Bourne, a few golf courses and an interpretation based on the marriage breakdown of the Prince and Princess of Wales and now this twist from Aronofsky. Yes, the story of the swan and the evil sorcerer is powerful, and the dancing is beautiful but Tchaikovsky’s music never loses its hold.

The ballet, Black Swan and The Wrestler all have something else in common.A very strong ending. That’s as much of a spoiler alert as you’re getting.

So, is this review true? Here is some of what the DWTS cast has tweeted on it;

If you’ve never heard on this new dance movie, you can more at IMDB. Thanks to Heidi for her help with this post!! 😉

Pure DWTS – “Calm Before The Storm” Weekend Media In The News

“You come out and show me a proper dance. I’m fed up, Maks, with shirts coming off.” – Dancing with the Stars judge Len Goodman

Remember that one? LOL I am so missing this show, are you? It’s the “calm before the storm” though. I can feel it.

So, first up in some weekend updates, a reminder to watch “Miss America” Saturday night on ABC. Brooke Burke will be helping to host. Tony Dovolani will be one the judges. He’s going to have his work cut out for him. You can see some of the contestants below presenting themselves on the Las Vegas Strip outside of the Planet Hollywood with Boys To Men as the Master of Ceremony.

Cheryl has been so busy. Along with her “Forever Tango” tour, she’s also offering free dance lessons for local teens at Burke’s Mountain View, California ballroom on Jan. 12th. More details below and a promotional picture of her from Mountainview.patch.com. (are her shoes not cute, or what? 🙂 )

Keep your dance card open for Monday, when “Dancing with the Stars” two-time champion Cheryl Burke and fellow dancers from the hit musical Forever Tango will appear at her Mountain View ballroom. From 6-11:30 p.m. Burke and her troupe will host free dance classes for teenagers from local schools. This fundraiser will benefit “The Dance Club Mountain View,” a program developed by the nonprofit Mountain View Police Activities League and Cheryl Burke Dance Mountain View.

For those of you missing Alec and Edyta like myself (cries, please bring these two back!!), here they are opening the show for the Everett Dance Competition in California last month.

Mark was interviewed by The News Herald this week in promotion for his new album “HurtLoveBox”. He also mentions dancing which you can read on below. Be sure to read the link for the full story and interview.

When asked what dance he would perform to each of his solo songs, Ballas graciously said “Faith” would be a rumba, while “The Way You Work” would be a tango. Welcome to Ballas’s world, where despite his best efforts to get his music career off the ground the reality is his popularity orbit remains steadfastly “Dancing With the Stars”-based.

There’s something about Ballas’ personality that has allowed him to become the go-to professional dancer for contestants with, if not baggage then, interesting pop culture history.

“I try to not pay attention to the media,” Ballas said. “When I meet the person I go in with a clean slate and just meet them and take them for what they really are and who they really are rather than what people perceive and write about them. So I had great partners. I’ve never had one rude or obnoxious.”

Mark also taught a “Master Class” for “Dare to Dance” in Cincinnati, Ohio while he was there this past week. The donations went to help his foundation which helps suicide preventation and mental health awareness.

And just a mention on Paula Abdul’s new show “Live To Dance” for those of you who watched the show this past week and were discussing it in other posts. Apparently the ratings weren’t very good on the second night. This source is calling it a “flop”. 🙁 From Robot Celeb.

On Tuesday night the show debuted to 10.3 million viewers. That is about half the size of the audience that American Idol gets, but still it was a decent number and not a terrible starting place. On Wednesday the show aired the second half of the premiere and finished off the first round of auditions. It also lost about 23% of its audience. Viewership plummeted to around 8 million viewers. It finished fourth in its timeslot behind The People’s Choice Awards, Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU. Worse yet was its collapse in ratings among the much coveted 18-49 year old demographic. Here it dropped about 25% from a 2.4 rating on Tuesday to a 1.8 on Wednesday. Essentially, that means that almost all of their loss in viewers was in the 18-49 age range. Not a good sign.

I would expect it to get worse in coming weeks. In two weeks the show will play head to head with the much anticipated debut of American Idol. That will most likely draw more of her viewers away.

If there is a silver lining to the clouds it is that that Live to Dance is just a short run show scheduled to end in mid-February so the odds are that they won’t cancel her mid-season. No matter how badly things could get they will probably let her finish out the full season. They have already committed much of the money by building her the dome building and finding the contestants. What is left will be pretty cheap in comparison.

I don’t know that this loss is ratings is the announcement of the death of Live to Dance, but it certainly proves one thing for sure. Paula Abdul clearly didn’t have the much of an influence on the success of American Idol.

Ok Dancettes, that is all for now!! Have a super weekend! 😉 xxx

Pure DWTS – Off Season Media Updates

Well, let’s see. What have we got here today? Not much really since it’s the off season. But, hey if you are like me, all things count even if it’s a little scrap. lol

So, first of all, it’s Carrie Ann’s 43rd birthday today. So, be sure to send her a little birthday tweet if you get the chance.

Next, ThatsFit.com has a new interview up with Brooke. She looks amazing and has some great advise on how she keeps fit.

Mark Ballas has done a new photoshoot for “Regard Magazine“. Here is some behind the scenes footage of him singing and playing his guitar for the new issue.

Also, Mark was interviewed while in Pittsburg when he was recently performing in “Burn The Floor”. He talks about the benefits of dance and what it can bring to your life.

For all of you Derek lovers like myself and thanks to Heidi and Pure Derek Hough, here is a pic of Derek taken this past week in Cape Town, South Africa with Cheryl Cole. Last week, the tabloids made such a big deal over them having their first public kiss. You would have thought the world as we know it had come to an end and now they have Cheryl wanting his babies. lol Seriously, why won’t let they leave these two be in peace and let them date already? You wouldn’t think it would be that big of deal. And I think they are indeed good enough for each other despite what some tabloids and fans questioning it. I mean….shouldn’t that be up to them and not us anyway?

If any of you live or are in the vicinity of Panama City, Florida on Jan. 16th, you can see Anna and Jonathan perform in a new “Bravo” Showcase benefitting the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Here is more information from Panhandle Parade.

Professional dancers, Jonathan Roberts and Anna Trebunskaya from ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” will be performing in the showcase.

Tickets are $25 for general admission and $50 for VIP tickets which will include the “after party” at the Shrimp Boat Restaurant.

The VIP tickets allow you to meet and greet Roberts and Trebunskaya from “Dancing With the Stars”.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 873-6269.

And is this picture not cute or what? This photo is of Peta and Damian celebrating New Years Eve together in Australia (check it out John. She’s got her blonde locks back. 😉 ). According to Peta’s facebook page, she will be in her homeland of Australia until February. She’s also posted that she won’t hear from DWTS until mid-February. I imagine this might be the case for all the dancers involved with the show?

This is a cool photo too. Maks posted this of himself, his brother Val, and his Dad on twitter over the holidays when they were in St. Maarten.

Ok, that is all for now. But, before wrapping this up, did any of you see Paula Abdul’s new “Live To Dance” show lastnight and did you like it? I didn’t think I’d like it. But, I found myself glued to it for the full two hours. They found some great talent and I loved the other two judges. Very well put together. Paula may just have a winner here?? Though none of these other dance shows will compare to “Dancing With The Stars”. 🙂

Love to All and have a super day or night when you read this!!

DWTS Awards: Controversy and Disappointing Elimination Awards

Which controversy caused the biggest stir on DWTS season 11?

Other Answers:
brandy eliminated instead of Bristol 1
brandy’s elimination 1
Brandy 1
maks in general 1
the haters of the palins causing such a vicious scene 1
Jennifer’s continued presence 1
Terribe treatment of Bristol Palin and Mark 1
BRANDY’S ELIMINATION 1

Heidi: LOL – someone wrote “maks in general”??? That’s hilarious. And it wasn’t me. 🙂 I see we have two people upset over the “vicious scene” the “haters of the palins” caused. LOL – and you guys are into politics? Seriously?

Voguerista: This year took the “controversy cake”. I am just glad Bristol didn’t win first or second or think of the controversy backlash in that? Understandable too why someone wrote “Brandy’s Elimination”. Fans on twitter were more vicious than I had ever seen them.

Courtney: No big surprises here – in fact, I think Bristol’s presence seemed to actually spawn a few controversies of its own (“Boogate” and Brandy’s elimination – assuming that Bristol would have gone home had Brandy stayed).  I think people wouldn’t have such a bad taste in their mouths post-season 11 had Bristol either gone home much earlier or perhaps hadn’t been on the show at all – it allowed politics to spill into something that is supposed to be fun and entertaining.  I did have to chuckle at the response of “Maks in general” as well, although I think Maks was pretty tame this season in comparison to some of the Bristol backlash going on; and “Jennifer’s continued presence”? Really? I can’t recall too many people who were up in arms about her staying week after week…not nearly as many those who were upset about Bristol.

Which couple were you most disappointed to see eliminated?

Other Answers:
Bristol 2
Margaret 1
none 1
The Situation and Karina 1
florence and corky 1
bristol and mark 1
Margaret and Louie 1
Mark and Bristol 1
Florence 1
Bristol and Mark 1

Heidi: So, four whole people were disappointed to see Bristol eliminated? What? You actually thought she should win? I want some of what you’re smoking please. 🙂

Voguerista: I remember thinking the elimination of Audrina and Tony was bad and then came the elimination of Maks and Brandy. *CRIES*

Courtney: Honestly, I think all of the eliminations from Audrina & Tony to Brandy & Maks were disappointing, since it seemed like better dancers were getting sent home while mediocre ones (who shall remain unnamed ;-)) remained. But I agree that Brandy’s cut was the unkindest of all – I did think she deserved to be in the finale, and I wanted to see what she had up her sleeve for the freestyle.

DWTS Awards: Nice Guys and Emotionally Charged

Of all the “nice guys” on the show this season, who was the most charming?

Other answers:
Derek Hough 2
mark ballas 2
Corky Ballas 1
Mark Ballas is the best 1
Mark Ballas 1
derek 1

Voguerista: I had trouble picking between Kyle and Kurt. I see everyone else did too.

Courtney: I think in the end Kyle ended up charming viewers with his youthful energy, and the fact that he was around the longest probably made him more memorable in their minds.  Kurt & Rick’s charm came more from their peaceful, grateful approach to being on the show – and the former interacting with his kids was totally endearing to me.  As for the Sitch – he was just a lovable dork 🙂  I agree that Derek was charming this season, but I think he was the same as he was any other season; as for Mark…erm, did you guys see some of his backstage & red carpet interviews? I don’t know that he was necessarily charming in them. 🙁

John: Ok, based on the other answers, I guess we should have clarified that the pros don’t count in this award. Although, that’s an interesting idea for a future one.

Which routine was the most emotionally-charged on DWTS season 11?

Voguerista: I had a hard time choosing between the top winning three in this poll. Each was so good and commendable. But, in the end, I gave it to Jennifer and Derek because they literally brought tears to my eyes by the end of it. I don’t remember in any Season of DWTS getting that choked up. That’s when you know dancing has just hit new heights. I love that.

Courtney: I agree with everything Vogue said – each of these dances seemed to really get the celebs emotionally invested in them (which is why I chose them as the contenders), but in the end I think Jennifer’s Viennese waltz had the right combination of vulnerability, honesty, and good dancing.  As for some of the “other” choices – I actually did contemplate putting Brandy & Maks’ waltz as an option, but then I remembered a lot of people thinking it was a little over-the-top and melodramatic, so it may not have fared so well in this category…I chose their rumba because it seemed a bit more natural in terms of emotion.  I also actually considered Bristol & Mark’s waltz too, but decided against it because I felt like the drama of it came more from the music & lighting than it did from Bristol conveying any sort of emotion in it – and I believe Carrie Ann actually said something about that as well.

John: There were a bunch of Bristol related other answers. Not enough to dent the results, but that was a different meaning for emotionally charged than what we intended I think. Although, I know some of our male readers loved her. Emotion is a funny thing.

DWTS – More “Put Me On The Show” Contenders & We Wishes

Ok, we have more names to throw around to you. What do you think of these people who are trying to get on the show?

Irish born singer, Paul Byrom is our first to report to you. If you do a search on his name at Twitter, you’ll see his fan base campaigning for him to be on the show. Here is a tweet from him today. If you aren’t sure who he is, check out this link under his name. Very nice, I must say. 😀

Not sure if it’s true or not, but, Lara Bingle has been approached to participate on the show. Special thanks to Pure DWTS fan Vin for this information from Sify. The link also mentions Brynne Edlston, Alby Mangels, and Chef Manu Feideo among a DWTS wish list.

The swimsuit model had rejected the offer four times but this time she is considering it, according to a source.

Melbourne socialite Brynne Edelsten, wild man adventurer Alby Mangels and saucy chef Manu Feildel are among those on the Dancing wish list, reports News.com.au.

Bingle will be in the US until early in the New Year.

Danny Gokey, third place finalist on the eighth season of American Idol, would also like a chance to show his stuff on Dancing With The Stars and maybe lose some weight at the same time. Here is a take from Country Music Tattle Tale.

Danny Gokey is where he is in country music because of one reality show: “American Idol.” Now, he tells CMT.com he’s eyeing another reality show. He says he would like to be on “Dancing With the Stars.” He says he likes dancing. And, on that show, “you lose weight, too.”

Danny says Simon Cowell told him he couldn’t dance. But, he says if he were on “Dancing With the Stars,” he could tell him, “you know, Simon, I’ll show you one day.”

LOL to Danny wanting to prove Simon Cowell wrong about his dancing abilities. That would be kind of fun to see. For some reason, I can see Danny dancing with Cheryl if this were to come true? Note: this isn’t the first time Danny has tried to get on the show. You can read an earlier post HERE from Season 9 for when Danny tried to get on the show and how the producers tried to work around his tight schedule. He is more free this Season. So, could this be a strong possibility?

Pop Stop TV is reporting that Kyle Massie’s brother, Chris, would like to dance on the show. More below. There is also a video at the link (it didn’t have a code to embed or I would have posted it).

PopStop TV correspondent Dena Kalil caught up with the brothers at the ‘Disney on Ice’ Charity event and he hinted exclusively that we might just see him on the show next season!

When asked the question, Chris answered coyly:

“Well, I would consider going on there because I would want to win it for the family. If I win it, I would give it [trophy] to him [Kyle].”

When we asked Kyle who he wanted to see on there, he told us he’d like to see Lindsay Lohan, Obama, and Oprah!

Judging by the way Chris’s eyes lit up when we asked him the question, we definitely think he knows something.

I’m not sure Chris is being as serious as Pop Stop would like to think, but, who knows? I liked Kyle Massey on the show. But, personally, I’m not ready for another “Massey” to be on the show…yet, anyway.

Marilu Henner is said to want to be on the show as well. From Showbiz Spy.

MARILU Henner wants to dance!

The Taxi actress, 58, says she’s desperate to appear on the hit US TV show Dancing With the Stars!

“I feel like the girl who’s waiting for the handsome guy to ask her to the dance,” she said.

Wow, and wouldn’t it have been cool if the DWTS producers could have convinced John Travolta to dance? Now that would have been a dream to see. However, he has politely declined. From Popcrunch.

…reality TV fans will have to wait just a little longer for ABC producers to convince the fleet-footed actor to showcase the fancy footwork that dazzled cinema audiences in Pulp Fiction and Staying Alive on the small screen sensation Dancing With the Stars.

We hear Travolta recently said “Thanks, but No Thanks” to an offer to join the cast of stars on the next season of the hit ballroom competition.

An DWTS insider tells Star: “They approached John. Everyone remembers him from Saturday Night Fever
and what a fantastic dancer he is. The ratings would be incredible.”

Though Travolta initially expressed interest in a starring stint on Dancing, the actor eventually politely declined, deciding instead to spend his free time at home in Florida with wife Kelly Preston and their two children, daughter Ella and newborn son Benjamin, Star claims.

“Daddy duties are his main priority right now,” the informant adds.

Ok, so what are your thoughts on these possible DWTS contenders? Of these choices, who can you see and not see on the show?
