Dancing with the Stars 2011 Music – Paso Doble and Waltz
UPDATE: Check out all the latest Dancing with the Stars music.
Ok, it’s time for the list of music from tonight’s show. Sorry it’s a little bit late since it looks like there’s been a lot of people looking for this list. Also, some of the songs were a little hard to find on iTunes and there were a few versions. Feel free to discuss in the comments if any of the songs aren’t quite right and I’ll update them for everyone. As always, you can see the full list of Dancing with the Stars 2011 music including past weeks.
Romeo & Chelsie danced a Paso Doble to the song “Palladio, First Movement” — Karl Jenkins
Kendra & Louis danced a Viennese Waltz to the song “Con te Partirò” — Andrea Bocelli
Sugar Ray & Anna danced a Viennese Waltz to the song “Waltz of the Flowers” — Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Petra & Dmitry danced a Paso Doble to the song “Les Voici! Voici La Quadrille!” — Georges Bizet
Ralph & Karina danced a Waltz to the song “Romeo and Juliet” — Nino Rota
Hines & Kym danced a Paso Doble to the song “Explosive” — Bond
Chelsea & Mark danced a Viennese Waltz to the song “Hedwig’s Theme” — John Williams
Chris & Cheryl danced a Paso Doble to the song “In the Hall of the Mountain King” — Edvard Grieg
Kirstie & Maks danced a Waltz to the song “The Flower Duet” — Léo Delibes
Thanks so much for finding all the music, John! It was one of my favourite musical evenings.
Thanks John! My fave music number last night was Romeo’s and Chelsie’s song!!
I hate to ask, but can anyone tell me (us) what overall piece each song was from. I recognized some of them but could quite place them.
I know Anna & Sugar Ray’s was from The Nutcracker & Mark & Chelsea’s was from Harry Potter but I am stumped on the rest.
Have they used the song Mark and Chelsea danced to before? Its ounded very familiar on the show.
“Palladio” is a suite of which the first movement was played. This is also familiar because it’s used in diamond commercials.
“Con te Partiro” (Time to Say Goodby) is a stand-alone song often performed as a duet with Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman.
“Les Voici” is from the opera Carme by Bizet.
“Romeo & Juliet” is an orchestral work by Tchaikovsky
“In the Hall of the Mountain King” composed by Edvard Grieg for the sixth scene of Act II in Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt.
“The Flower Duet” is from the opera Lamke by Delibes
Voguerista/Heidi
Can I just point something out, why are Maks and Kirstie always on at the end of the show? I thought they are supposed to rotate the dancers everyweek, they just seem to be saving her as the entertainment for the end of the show. Its not fair to both of them!
One more thing, I am really sick of Kendra and eyes rolling and her attitude. Its really time for her to go! Please!
Can I also point out that Mark and Chelsea clearly got a better song than the other contestants? One that was more recognizable to a wider audience and easier to connect to? Kind of unfair to give some people more obscure music, and to give other people… Harry Potter.
Chris and Cheryl also had Harry Potter. Ralph and Karina were Romeo and Juliet. Carmen was in there somewhere, don’t remember who danced to that one. And yes, Hedwig’s Theme (Mark and Chelsea’s) has been used before but I don’t remember by who – I think Edyta and someone.
People keep saying there was another Harry Potter theme. But where? Edvard Grieg is not Harry Potter. He died in 1907.
It would be better to say that two of the songs last night are used in Harry Potter. I was referring in my other post to why people were talking about “movie night” at the same time as “Classical” night – because it was classical music that happened to be featured in movies.
Well, it definitely wasn’t Classical night, in the literal sense, with a capital C. Whomever chooses the music does a lousy job, because they don’t all get the same “quality” of music. How some pasos are powerful and some are lyrical is beyond me, when the dance is supposed to have a fight-like quality. How some get recognizable, emotional music, and some get obscure music that only people from Berkelee College of Music would identify and connect with… It’s odd. I wonder if some of them have stuff written into their contracts, “I have to approve my music,” etc. Obviously, if I’m choreographing, and I had a choice between Lady Gaga and some random po-dunk nobody, I’d choose the song everybody knows.
@Megan – Just curious…is there any part of the show that you actually enjoy? Because I feel like every single comment I see from you is something like “This is soooo unfair” or “This wasn’t good” or “This pissed me off”. And we’ve long acknowledged that the show will never be 100% fair – some people are always going to get better running order positions, music, costumes, scores, etc. And really, I don’t think having a more “recognizable” song choice is any sort of indicator that a dance is going to fare better overall – I’ve known dances to obscure songs that got rave reviews (Brandy & Maks’ waltz comes to mind), and dances to popular songs that got panned (The Situation & Karina’s cha-cha to “Break Your Heart”). The only time I think song choice really does make a difference is if the rhythm of a song changes so that it’s hard to do a specific dance to it…Chris & Cheryl’s cha-cha to “Should I Stay or Should I Go” comes to mind.
@Margaret – “They seem to just be saving her for entertainment at the end of the show.” Um…DUH. TPTB always want to put their biggest ratings draw at the end of the show – makes viewers want to stick around through the duration of the show, rather than tuning out if the favorite that season dances towards the beginning or middle of the show. They don’t care about “fairness” – they care about ratings. I don’t blame them at all, and I doubt they’re going to “rotate” the couples so that changes anytime soon. And how is that “unfair” to Kirstie and Maks? If anything, I think it would only help them get votes, since they’re fresh in the minds of the viewers that wait until the end of the show to vote.
Bottom line, folks: life is not fair, and neither is the show. May as well get used to it, because that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
LisaC,
That would be pretty difficult. Like you said, some are easy, but others I’m not sure. In most cases I tried to find the album the song was on and not just the song. Also, nice people like Lisa have pointed out some in the comments.
vin,
Good call. Mark and Chelsea’s music was used by Cameron and Edyta back in 2007: https://www.puredwts.com/2007/11/21/dancing-with-the-stars-music-week-8/
margaret,
The show does whatever it thinks is best for the order. They’re all about getting the most viewers possible. Although, usually I think it’s an advantage for someone to go last since then the dance is in people’s minds and plus the voting starts right after their performance. I think Heidi calls it the pimp spot or something like that.
I’ve actually wondered if Kirstie got it worked into her contract to get announced last every time during introductions – I should go back and check, but it seems that she is always the last one brought out. I have also wondered if her contract could stipulate something about dancing order and always getting a good spot (and TPTB would be happy to comply because she is a big name). Just my thoughts, absolutely nothing to back it up.
@Courtney – WOW. Unwad your panties. It’s only Tuesday. People can express negative opinions about certain aspects of the show. Did you read where I said on the other post that I overall liked last night’s show and pointed out the couples whose dances I particularly liked, not to mention stated how much Karina was growing on me this season? I watch the show to see untrained people learn to dance. NOT to see Mark Ballas show off his solo skills, or (how I’ve felt about Cheryl in the past) Cheryl Burke use Gilles Marini or any of her partners as a prop for her to just dance around. It rubs me the wrong way when the “favorite” pros are catered to repeatedly with good partners and good music and pros like Lacey and Anna and Dmitry kind of get the shaft.
Re: order… Remember when Kate+8 was always dancing last? Same thing as Kirstie.
@Megan – You would be wise not to tell one of the moderators to “unwad her panties” 😉 From what I could tell, it was you who was getting all worked up about the music – going on about how it was unfair that some folks got Harry Potter and others got something else. And honey, I don’t care if you have a negative opinion – that’s fine. You just seem to always be more upset about the show than you are happy about it. I didn’t see your other comment – sorry. But we do tend to get some people on here that tend to be Debbie Downers, just always upset about some aspect of the show – we had one guy last season that would have a meltdown each week just because Bristol didn’t go home. I’m just trying to understand why the music was such a big deal – from what I’ve watched so far, I don’t feel like it really affected anyone’s performance negatively…and I don’t feel like there’s anyone that consistently gets all the “good” music. Music is music to me, as long as it has the proper rhythm for the dance it is intended for – it’s the couple & the choreography that make it what it is. Blaming a bad performance on the song seems like a bit of a cop-out to me. Are my panties sufficiently “unwadded”, dear?
Courtney’s panties aren’t in a wad. I won’t tell you how I know that…on to other topics…
Fig,
I’d be surprised if coming out order was in her contract, but maybe.
Courtney,
I do think the music selection matters a lot more than you describe. It’s not the death nail, but if someone has an emotional connection to a song and then the dancers do well with that song it gets people interested. When I posted the music list above and saw “Con Te Partiro” by Andrea Bocelli (before I’d seen it on the West Coast) I was excited for it just based on the song.
Of course, if/when the band slaughters a favorite song it can have a negative impact on the dancers as well.
Thank you for clearing up the status of my undergarmets, John 😉 Haha
I agree that if some might be able to connect to a song more than others – it can have a positive effect on the overall performance. But I don’t necessarily think connecting to a song is necessary to give a good performance, either – two examples of crummy songs that ended up yielding good performances stand out to me: Nicole & Derek’s tango to “Pretty Woman” and Situation & Karina’s foxtrot to “Boom Boom Pow”. The tone of both songs was just downright crappy for the their respective dances. But I think the Pretty Woman tango was one of the best dances of the season, and the Boom Boom Pow foxtrot was one of the most memorable. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that a crappy song (or lesser-known song) is not a death sentence – so I guess I don’t understand why some people are getting so riled up over it. And I really didn’t think any of the music from last night was that bad – I’ve only watched the performances themselves, and overall I liked the songs they chose.
As for Kirstie coming down the stairs last – don’t they have all the couples come down the stairs in the same order they performed in the first night, every week? I am fairly certain that’s how it’s always been – running order on the very first night determines the order they come down the stairs for the rest of the season, just like their phone-in number. I don’t necessarily think it’s anything contractual that necessitates that Kirstie comes last…I think it’s just by design.
I do call it the pimp spot and I also called Edyta as having danced to Harry Potter before. So there. 🙂
Did you tell Bergeron that I love him and want to marry him?
Fig, you mean announced at the beginning of the show?? I believe they always come out in the same order and it’s according to their call in number (which usually corresponds to dance order number for the first night).
ETA: and I see Courtney said the same thing, so I’m not just imagining it. 🙂
Courtney:
You’re right dear, I should’ve been more specific, I know its about ratings! I stand corrected. It seems that it wasn’t this bad last season, if I remember Derek and Jennifer were shuffled around a bit more, because lets be honest we all look forward to their dances!
Kirstie admitted she doesn’t want pitty votes. She and Maks are really good and everyone has mishaps believe me I know! Live tv is not easy anything can happen, we all know that.
Does anyone feel that Kendra should be the one to go, her attitude alone should do her in. She’s always rolling her eyes, she gives me nausea!
Kirstie admitted she doesn’t want votes out of pitty
I would love to have classical week every season. And Instant dance. Those are two most successful themes in my book.
“Classical Week” was really a treat! For the first time since I’ve been watching DWTS I felt jealous of the studio audience. They got to enjoy in person an enchanted evening of orchestra, dance, and opera.
I just youtubed edyta and cameron’s dance tothe song and their dance was better than Mark’s in my opinion. The song Kendra sued was amzing though. I actually downloaded that one onto my Ipod.
I liked classical music night. Definately something the show should continue along with story night (but not the way they did it this season). I liked the story night from nicole’s season….that was more fun to watch.
I enjoyed the show last night and was familiar with most of the music even though I don’t listen to classical music. I believe the theme from Romeo and Juliet was “A Time for Us”. Loved “Time to Say Goodbye”, “The Flower Duet” and “Waltz of the Flowers”. Anna and Ray’s dance was very charming and loved her costume. Since I’ve never seen a Harry Potter movie I didn’t recognize “Hedwig’s Theme” but I enjoyed Mark and Chelsea’s dance—very innovative and unusual.
Thank you for putting together this list. It’s so appreciated.
I have downloaded all these pieces! Just wanted to let everyone know that I found a nice version of the Romeo and Juliet theme on itunes – Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, Romeo and Juliet Love Theme, 20th Century Masters.
Also, Katherine Jenkins version of Time to Say Goodbye is beautiful, but another version to check out is Maria Locerbo’s Con te partiro.
Thanks John for the weekly music lists! I came by to ask, have the dance troupe been performing lately, and do you know what music was used? I’m a fan of the original British version and I come on here just to see if a song I like was used, and then I watch just those dances – following both versions would take too much of my energy!
As for “the “favorite” pros are catered to repeatedly with good partners”: that’s very different from the British version! As far as I can remember, all the pros who won the British version got a bad dancer the next season, and that sort of evens-up the popularity of the pros, because you get to see more of another pro and they grow on you.
Maybe so, Chicara, but maybe that was coincidence, since the shows are run by the same people. It’s ratings are also in the tank, from what I’ve read.
4 18 I am astounded that someone decided that VIVE LAS VegAS WAS AN APPROPRIATE CHOICE FOR THE QUICK STEP. NOT FAIR TO THE PERFORMERS. THEY ARE NOT 60!
Heidi: but there are definite differences between the two versions, to suit the different audiences. For example, the British version has never had themed weeks nor use of props (besides paso capes and similar costume accessories) until last year, when they decided to Americanise it in attempt to stop the ratings slide and attract younger viewers. I wasn’t a fan of the changes, I felt like the dancers now act more and dance less compared to before.
I agree chicara. I loved the SCD season that alesha danced. Last season wasn’t bad at all even “americaniseing”…
note: carrie ann ex won…
