Dance of the Day… Let’s compare Kelly and Drew

I’m taking an idea from the comments, and trying to figure this out as I go. I am going to be honest and say that I am deciding how these posts will go, as I make them, and will use ideas and dances you want to see again, when they fit the post.

For now, let’s compare the Champions of each season, using their FIRST dance, and their first impression on the show.

Season 1 Champion is KELLY MONACO, with her professional partner, ALEC MAZO. They danced a Waltz to “I Have Nothing” I Have Nothing - The Bodyguard (Original Soundtrack Album) by Whitney Houston.

Season 2 Champion is DREW LACHEY, with his professional partner, CHERYL BURKE. They danced a Cha-Cha, and I don’t have the song, so if you can place it, PLEASE tell us in the comments to the song “She Bangs” She Bangs (English Version) - Sound Loaded by Ricky Martin.

Let’s take a POLL! Which dance do you prefer, and why? Answer in the comments.

Karina Smirnoff On Image Overcoming Actual Dancing Ability, Her Relationships Effecting Dancing With The Stars, and More

TampaBay.com has a new interview up with Karina Smirnoff. They ask her if she was upset about how harsh the judges were on her and Ralph this past season. Karina dishes about ‘the way image can overcome actual dancing ability’. Below is her reply.

“It was a little weird that people were like, ‘Oh you moved your little pinky, we love it, you get a (score of) 10!’ ” she said of Alley, who racked up impressive scores despite falling during one routine and losing her shoe during another.

“Once that happened, (the judges) were like, ‘You picked yourself up, you did such an amazing job.’ … We fell, had an injury and ‘Oh, we’ll take points away,’ ” said Smirnoff. ”Kirstie represents the majority of the demographic that watches the show … and the message she had — that you can lose weight and get into the shape you want through dance — was very strong.”

They also interviewed Karina on her upcoming nuptials and if she thinks getting married will make a success on the show tougher. I don’t think that’s true, do you? They also ask her about her and Maks’ relationship and if it helped them on the show. Wow, what questions! Unfortunately and right or wrong, I think Karina is right how anything that hit’s newsstands makes people watch the show versus dancing. It’s kind of sad when you think about it.

You and Penny caused worldwide headlines when you announced a January wedding date.
To me, that’s always, like, bizarre. Nobody cares that I’m still doing a lot for my charity with kids in LA. But when we got engaged, that was front page news everywhere.

Do you worry getting married will make success on the show tougher because fans want to believe you might hook up with your partner?
Dancing to me is pretty much acting with your body without using words. If you’re dancing together you do want to portray that you have chemistry, that you have some sort of connection, that you have this passion for each other. Otherwise, you are a horrible dancer.

But you once were engaged to fellow Dancing star Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Didn’t it help you on the show for people to know you were an item?
The show is a popularity, personality and a danceability competition. All three matter. If you’re popular and you’re a hot topic in the press, people will tune to see what everybody’s talking about. And possibly vote to see if there’s more gossip or more news going to come out in certain situations. But you want people to like you and you want people to see you the way you really are.

Karina will be judging the Millennium Dancesport Championships next week where more than 1,700 dancers are expected to compete. For dates, time, and ticket information, go HERE.

Heidi’s Note: Yep, Karina pretty much nails it, IMO. Kirstie got away with lots of stuff that Ralph didn’t. Crack is wack.

Kym Johnson Talks On Healing Up From Her Neck Injury On Dancing With The Stars And More

The Day spoke with Kym Johnson on the phone last week. They talked of how she is healing up from her fall with Hines. She’s doing “so much better now”. Kym plans to keep doing physical therapy over the summer. She’s still dancing too. Her and Dmitry Chaplin are dancing at the Mohegan Sun tomorrow (Friday). They will also sign autographs as part of the Sun’s Reality Check series. You can read more about the event at the link as well as what drew Kym to ballroom dancing.

The video of Johnson being injured in rehearsal was stunning:
“I still actually haven’t seen it myself. But, you know, I’m so much better now. My neck’s feeling okay. It’s actually my shoulder. I tore a little tendon off the bone when I fell on my neck, so that’s what I have to look at now. And that’s what I have to fix up. I’m just going to be having physical therapy, and I’ve got time now to get better.”

When complimented on how easy she made dancing look on her first post-injury show, her response is:
“Well, I did have a few painkillers to get me through it. When the doctors cleared me, they didn’t clear me until Monday to dance that day. … I knew I wasn’t doing anything dangerous where I could hurt myself again. We both decided, let’s do it. I was more concerned about Hines because he knew to dance with me. It’s hard when you have to then suddenly dance with someone else, and that’s what we would have had to do. We both decided, yeah, let’s do it. …

“He was great. He really pulled me through the routine.”

Johnson has partnered with celebs who each had their own level of abilities. She explained the knack of choreographing dances that makes them each look their best:
“The first (celebrity) I had was Jerry Springer. I had to be a little bit more accommodating for the routines because there were a few things he couldn’t do. Then I had Joey Fatone, and Joey’s an incredible dancer. So I changed it up with him. It really just depends on who you get.

“And then with Hines, he just had the whole package. I could do so much with him. He was strong, he was young. Donny Osmond, I would do a lot with as well. He was from a performing background. He was the showman, and we could be very showy with him.

“You just have to adapt to whoever you have. I have done 12 seasons, so you’d think I’d get bored with it, but each season is so different. Whoever you’re dancing with inspires you to come up with different stuff, so you don’t get stale.”

How can anyone not think Kym is show stoppingly beautiful in and out?!! Here’s to Kym continuing to get better from her neck injury!

The On-Going Saga of The Bachelorette (Ashley Hebert) and DWTS – Rumor or Reality?

Yes, it is an on-going saga. First it was “rumored” she was in talks to sign up. Then it was supposedly confirmed. Well, now, a friend of hers is saying that she did the Bachelor in the first place in order to get a spot on DWTS. :::sigh::: I dunno, it seems to me that DWTS opened themselves up to people trying to establish themselves as “stars” (as if) in order to try to get on their show when they started taking reality faux stars. Ashley seems like a nice girl and all, but this, if true, is just ridiculous. “I want to be on DWTS because I can dance, but I’m not a star. They took other people from The Bachelor, so I’ll just go on there.” Oy veh.

On the other hand, it would be nice to see a higher level of dance than what we had last season. But still – Kirstie Alley = STAR. Ashley? Not so much. From Hollywood Life:

A close friend of Ashley’s tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively that she didn’t think she’d make it that far on ‘The Bachelor’ — so she was going to use it to move on to ‘DWTS!’

Most people go on The Bachelor to find love. But Ashley Hebert — currently starring as The Bachelorette — thought she would give it a go to boost her chances of getting a spot on Dancing with the Stars!

“Going on Dancing with the Stars was one of her main reasons going on The Bachelor,” a source very close to Ashley tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively! “Because of her dancing background,” Ashley thought she would have a shot.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Last Saturday, Anna Trebunskaya & Tony Dovoloni danced for the Brian Anselmo Memorial Foundation’s “Dancing With The Stars” fundraiser. The two danced beautifully and rocked the event.
