Dancing With The Stars Nominated For Seven 2011 Emmy Awards
This morning the 2011 Emmy Nominations were announced. From what I can gather, Dancing With The Stars has garnished seven nominations: One for Outstanding Reality Series, Outstanding Reality Host-Tom Bergeron, Outstanding Choreography-Mark Ballas (huh? Strange how the judges and fans alike had issues with the three dances Mark is nominated for at the time and yet, he gets nominated for an Emmy for them? Plus, he only placed 3rd in the Season 12 finals. What about Maks and Kym’s choreography? And what about Derek? Have they forgot about Season 11?), Outstanding Hairstyling For A Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Lighting, Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special, and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Series. Sizing up these catagories for who will compete for an Emmy in each, they go as follows….

I hope I haven’t missed any? If so, please feel free to let me know. Note: Fox will televise the Emmy Awards on Sept. 18. Jane Lynch, the star of “Glee,” will host the show.
For more Emmy nominations, check out Emmys.com.
Ooooo, Wow…. Mark got his Emmy nod. That means his sole purpose of last season’s “antics” has been justified. Does this mean we’re going to see more of it, or can he now go back to being the Old Mark?
I really prefer Old Mark to what we saw last season.
Congrats to Tom, a win will be his, I hope! And, congrats to Mark and the rest of the great people from the show nominated!
Congrats to everyone!! I am so very pleased for Mark. And you know, some of us fans didn’t have issues with the choreography that he was nominated for. I loved Hedwig’s Viennese Waltz as did the offline folks that I watch DWTS with.
The host category is going to kill me! I love both Tom and Cat. Could we have a tie? *g*
Well, I may be alone in this, but I actually think Mark’s choreo in the Jive, V. waltz, and waltz were all amazing, despite Len’s comments on all of them and CAI’s on the Jive. And we should keep in mind the juges had problems with Derek’s rule breaking Quickstep, even though most fans loved it. Yes, I think Derek should get one too for his AT season, and Kym and Maks deserve it too, but nonetheless, I’m overall kinda happy for Mark. No offense to you at all Vogue, this is just my opinion, but I honestly don’t think what place someone gets should have anything to do with it. I do share the worry that this will justify Mark’s behavior last season though, and I wish the old Mark was back too. While the 3 dances that got nominated were awesome, Mark really showed off more of himself than Chelsea in just about everything except the Waltz, which was my favorite dance from them.
Overall, I have slightly mixed feelings about his emmy noms. Great routines, but the results of one winning could be bad. Congrats to Tom, the hairstylists

Congrats to Tom, the hairstylists, and the rest of the DWTS crew 🙂
FINALLY!!! Both Berg & Cat get recognized for the fantastic job they do hosting 😀 But watch – the Probst-bot will win it yet again. Grrrr. I just don’t see the appeal of that guy.
I do find it a bit odd that 3 dances that were generally panned by the judges on DWTS ended up nominated for an Emmy. However, if you look at the other nominees in the category (all from SYTYCD, mind you – Mia Michaels, Nappytabs, Stacey Tookey, Travis Wall, & Mandy Moore), it looks like the nominations skew towards more “contemporary” pieces. If you watch Mark’s 3 nominated routines with the vocabulary of a contemporary dancer, I think they end up looking quite innovative and unique. However, from the vocabulary of a ballroom dancer – they’re not very good representations of the respective styles they’re meant to be. I guess that’s how 3 routines that got negative reviews as ballroom routines ended up nominated – they feel more contemporary than ballroom. However, routines nominated from DWTS typically don’t get the respect they deserve in at the Emmys – and Mia “I’m such a genius, even my farts deserve nominations” Michaels seems to run away with the prize every year…wouldn’t surprise me if it happened again this year.
I do hope that Mark doesn’t take this as an invitation to just choreograph with mission of getting an Emmy nod from now on – while I don’t think any of the routines he was nominated for were intrinsically bad (I still kinda like their jive), I don’t really think they were good examples of the dance styles they were meant to be, and I don’t think they were necessarily the best displays of his partner’s talent…hopefully he’ll find a way to be both creative and still fulfill the purposes of DWTS in future routines.
So sorry about the double post, my phone was being stupid 😛
How did they forget about season 11 and Dereks choreography?
Thanks for your thoughts on this so far, All….and don’t worry, no offense taken!! 😉
Courtney, you help to explain this even more so I can understand why he’d get nominated.
@Courtney: Being a huge Survivor fan who has watched since season 1, I can tell you why Jeff is so popular with fans and the Emmys….or at least what I think it is. He stirs the pot on survivor and really makes the tribal councils insane and makes the crazy contestants act even crazier. He makes the show what it is.
Glad to see Cat nominated though!
I actually don’t see Mia winning this year.
Tom has been nominated every year for his category which is still new seeing how its the third year for this award and his tweet about it made me laugh.
@Lori – I had the same initial thought you did about Mark’s Emmy nominations, that he is being rewarded for his obnoxious behavior although the dances themselves were very entertaining. My second thought was he had a great partner to show them off and congratulations to both he and Chelsea.
Vin, that’s it exactly about Jeff Probst. The man is a total Shit Disturber and knows exactly which buttons to push on the contestants. I understand completely why he’s won every time.
But now… come on… Tom and Cat time, yes??? 🙂
@Evaine & vin – That “Shit Disturber” role that Probst takes on is exactly what I HATE about him. Seacrest does the same thing, to a lesser degree – they find ways to stir up trouble to “make for better tv”. That manufactured drama is what I hate about Survivor – it’s just gotten old at this point for me. Hell, I’m over manufactured drama, period, on any reality show. And I really hate that both Probst & Seacrest do it at the expense of the contestants – Probst pokes ’em with a proverbial sharp stick, and Seacrest baits them with loaded questions. I’ve never seen Tom or Cat do that to any of the contestants on their shows – and those shows are every bit as compelling to watch as Survivor or Idol. Tom is hilarious on his own and doesn’t need fake drama to be entertaining – hell, half the time he’s poking fun at the fake drama created by TPTB. And Cat’s just beyond graceful and still funny at the same time. I don’t want instigators to win – I want genuinely good hosts to win.
I’m happy for Mark he deserve it realy. It’s like a gift for Mark from all tha hates he get.
I have to disagree, Courtney, Probst does exactly what he’s supposed to do. Press buttons and stir stuff up. I wouldn’t compare him to Seacrest at all, Seacrest belongs more in the DWTS, SYTYCD host camp. Two different types of shows and two different job descriptions. Are Tom and Cat better hosts than Seacrest? Oh, you betcha!!! Bigtime! Are they better in their genre of hosting than Probst is in his? I would say it’s about equal. But you know… just my opinion. *g* I don’t think the most ‘deserving’ person should win on Survivor either. *LOL* And Richard Hatch remains my favorite Survivor contestant of all time.
I think it’s awful that Jennifer & Derek’s Argentine Tango was not nominated for an Emmy but the week they did this performance (S11 W4) was nominated for Outstanding Technical Direction.-Go figure!
Congrats to Tom. I hope he wins this time he certainly deserves too!
@Vogue – I guess you could think of it this way: the Emmy for Outstanding Choreography is meant to award unique & innovative works of dance. Doesn’t specify what type of dance, so rather than judging Mark’s pieces as “Is this a good example of Viennese waltz?” or “Is this a good representation of the jive?”, the judges are looking at them through the lens of “Is this a piece that really stands out as a great artistic example of the power of dance?” When you take away the expectations of DWTS (which I still think are important), Mark’s pieces do look pretty cool. And the choreography Emmys have usually gone to more “envelope-pushing” pieces – hence Mia’s long reign as the winner. Do I understand why Mark was nominated? Yes. Do I agree with it? Yes & no. While I do think his pieces were unique, I think there were stronger candidates from DWTS (Derek & Maks have both choreographed Emmy-worthy routines in the past 2 seasons, IMO) and I’m still a bit bothered by the fact that his dances weren’t good examples of the dance styles they were meant to portray, since DWTS is meant to showcase ballroom dancing. Guess it just irks me that “Screw my partner, screw this show, screw ballroom – I’m gonna do what I want” gets rewarded with an Emmy nod.
I’m sorry…. but didn’t Derek break the rules for his QS routine with Nicole? How is this any different? Memo to other pros…
I don’t think Mark’s choreography last season was bad (I didn’t like that it was non-traditional, but it wasn’t bad), but I don’t think it’s the strongest from the past two seasons of DWTS, and that’s what puzzles me. How do nominations work though? Does ABC submit certain dancers, or do the choreographer’s “people” do it?
I hope Tom wins this year. I’m glad to see Cat Deeley nominated too, but Tom has deserved to win this award for a few years now!
Okay, so here’s my crack at it – and I said all this last year as well, so nothing new. Choreographers vote on Choreography. Since most of the choreographers in Hollywood end up on SYTYCD at one time or another, they are more inclined to vote that way. In addition, MOST DWTS dances include an amature partner, such is not the case on the other show. Not to mention there are no “no lifts” rules on SYTYCD and that ballroom is considered stuff (mainly because most of the other choreographers can’t actually DO IT) compared to the contemporary. So, when you add all that stuff together, it means that SYTYCD is going to get most or all of the nominations – they are far less restricted. When you consider there is only ONE spot (if that) for DWTS choreo and the fact that most of the all pro-dances sans musical act have gone by the wayside, you severly limit the chances of a nomination.
As for why Mark and not Derek? Well, Derek’s dances were straight up, hard core ballroom and not contemporary which is what most of Mark’s verged on. As you can see, these nominations are heavily weighted toward contemporary. What were Derek’s other nominations?? Except for the Quickstep with Nicole, they were all hard core ballroom, but they were also very, very impressive or different in a way to perhaps overcome a stereotype. Plus, Derek was dancing with a 50-year old, versus the very young Chelsea – this all has an impact and it would be foolish to think otherwise.
Much like SYTYCD itself (this season more than ever) I think that the Emmy’s biased against ballroom. Derek isn’t the only person who deserved some recognition that didn’t get it this year, IMO. And if last season’s SYTYCD choreography is anything like this seasons?? OVER RATED. I especially hope that Mia Michaels doesn’t win. If Mark can’t take it for DWTS, I hope it’s NappyTabs. Unfortunately, I think it will either be Mia OR Travis. Ugh – I can hear Nigel crowing already. He constantly compares SYTYCD and DWTS when anyone with a brains sees why you shouldn’t (see above). Frankly, he just has ratings insecurity – DWTS are up and SYTYCD is falling every week.
ETA: Also – campaigning for these awards has a HUGE impact. And guess who campaigns very, VERY hard every single year for SYTYCD choreographers?? Why Nigel, of course. And he’s got all the right friends as well.
I love Jeff Probst very much – for one thing, he writes a hella hilarious blog about the show. But damn, Cat and Tom work LIVE and that takes a hell of a lot more talent.
Oh, Maddy – Derek broke the rules, he acknowledged he broke the rules and he was A MAN about the criticism he took for breaking the rules. Plus he only did it ONE dance with Nicole, not half the season. Not to mention he showcased his partner not himself. How’s that for differences? Derek also didn’t clog up my twitter feed with self congratulatory re-tweeting and crowing about how he got nominated for dances that the judges hated. (Yes, go look at Mark’s twitter)
So, there you go. Don’t forget – you asked the question. Don’t ask the ones you don’t want to hear my answers to. 🙂
Well, Courtney – if you watch SYTYCD from last night – their ballroom SUCKED. It doesn’t even look like ballroom. The exception of course was Louis Van Amstel – he choregraphed two kickass dances last night that were strict and difficult ballroom – better than anything he’s done on DWTS in YEARS. Will he get included in the club next year??? Somehow I don’t think so. See my other post for why. 🙂
Kelsey, I think someone told me that the producers ask all the pros (or make suggestions) what they would like to submit, and then I think they do the submittal work for them. Because really, any nomination benefits the show just as much as the pro. Maybe more so.
Oh boy this will make Mark’s head more bigger than it was already. The dances he got nominated for were just okay but not great imo. So this means that he will be back for season 13 for sure. He will be just as cocky as he was on season 12 since he got now an emmy nod. I just hope he doesn’t win he always thinks he deserves everything when he doesn’t.The only thing I want is that Tom Bergeon win the emmy he deserves one for him hosting DWTS. He’s such a good host.
Way to go DWTS! Congrats to all nominated. It is especially gratifying for Mark and Chelsea. They took so much hate from those that were too biased or couldn’t see the artistry in their work. I hope he stays confident in his work and is blessed with another awesome partner like Chelsea next season…her talent was the inspiration he needed. I’m not sure if he will win…but that is 2 DWTS pros with nods and that is promising for the future.
@Cindy – Great post. I was going to say just about the same thing, only you said it much better… Thanks.
WTG MARK!!! Loved your dances last season. Truly outstanding. Also, Congrats to Tom. Both of these guys are deserving!!
.??Kelly? 2 pros? Dwts has been nominated way more than that. Derek has 3, chelsie has one, Cheryl has one or maybe two, and I believe Louis has a few from the early days.
As for poor little mark and the haters – you’ve opened a can of worms there. Mark was a whiny little brat last season – his problem if he can’t handle the heat. He had a lot more fans here before that. Haters is such a pathetic word implying a much stronger emotion than what most probably feel. But for his fans, anything less than worship is hate. Boo hoo.
@Kelly – Just because someone didn’t really like Mark’s routines this season does NOT mean they’re “biased” or “can’t see the artistry in his work”. My issue is that his dances were not good representations of the dance styles he was supposed to be portraying, and they did not adequately showcase his partner’s skills. Do I see the artistry in his choreography? Yes. I went into detail about it above. I wouldn’t assume everyone is so blindly against Mark.
I’m having to chuckle a little at some of the comments I’m seeing on Twitter about all of this. Some people seem to think Mark getting “hated on” = Mark deserving an Emmy nom. Errr…am I missing something here? Heidi & I get “hated on” all the time. Do we get an Emmy nomination, too? 🙂
Oh, and here’s a fun fact: I went back and rewatched all of Mark’s nominated routines to see if there was something I was missing. Nope, but Carrie Ann did make an interesting comment when critiquing their jive: “If I were judging this as a contemporary routine, I’d give you a much better score. But I’m judging the jive, and I didn’t see enough of it.”
I’m with Heidi and Court, no one is hating on Mark. There are just those that just don’t agree with him getting such a nomination. Yes, his work was creative and artistic like Courtney explained, but, did it deserve this kind of reward especially when he had the worst attitude last Season and he broke the rules to do it? And I’m sorry, but, Kym’s, Maks’, Karina’s, etc work was just as creative and artistic.
Also, I imagine this nomination will seal Mark’s coming back next Season too. Between the producers and the Emmy committee, they have no idea the monster they’ve just created even more. I HOPE I’M WRONG!
I had a feeling the wizrd waltz would get nomianted but the jive really was a shock. Kinda annoyed that Ralph’s foctrot or Jenifer and Derek’s paso (the second one) wern’t nominated. The pro number to Hansen was great too I thought that would have been nominated.
I agree Vin. It’s totally sad how Derek’s work with Jennifer was ignored (some of their dances brought tears to my eyes which Mark’s never did). And yeah, what about all of the pro numbers too?
Mark mentioned the judges in his tweets. He needs to let it go. I think that nomination is only feeding the new Mark. I am sure he wanted that nomination after seeing the Hough earn five between them, Cherl has two, Dmitry has one and Chelsie has one. All of these pros are proud and pros and the pros he is close to all have nominations. I wonder if he thought about this when he saw Chelsea was good and that is why he requested that song for the jive. The cynical side wonders. His dances were theatrical but not sure if they will beat sytycd. Mia knows how to choreograph. My choice is Stacey. That mad world routine was stellar. I also thought Sonya was going to get nominated for her routine with Alex and Allison. Or Wade for his opening number. If there was a season for sytycd to take all of the categories, it was this year. But I wonder if Mark has a chance because sytycd may vote split.
I am surprised Jennifer’s tango was not nominated. I just hope Tom finally wins.
Vin, the choreographers submit up to three dances as their submission. They might have only liked one dance but they have to nominate them as a group.
Actually, I thought Karina’s choreography was superior. Her Romeo and Juliet waltz was better than the wizard one. Let contemporary, but creative.
As for Derek, I agree those dances were amazing but he has earned three already. Who knows. Maybe if he was there during season 12 he could have had another.
Mark would be the one to win because of how much everyone “DISLIKED” his choreography this past season. Err not so much his choreography but his personality. BTW screw Mia Michaels, Nappy Tabs should win!
I think you don’t give the producers enough credit vogue. 🙂 They see it all. And I doubt very much that they will base their decisions for the season on Mark’s emmy nod. Pretty sure that Louis got nominated and then sat out a season.
I thought NappyTabs routine with Twitch and…was it Alex?…was amazing. I’d vote for that. 🙂
Mark now has 3
Derek has 3
Cheryl has 2
Tony has 1
Chelsie has 1
Melissa, if we are picking nominations by how many one has, none of SYTYCD’s choreographers would be nominated this season. Also think you are incorrect about the nominating – they don’t have to submit three. Derek’s “body of work” nomination last season only had TWO dances. The accoustic paso with Chelsie was a separate nomination.
And Maddy once again proves that her head will explode if she does not have the last word.
And Maddy, your math is wrong anyway. You’re counting Derek’s nominations as single events, while you’re counting Mark’s 3 nominated routines this year as 3 separate events. Nice try. Since Mark’s 3 routines were submitted as one body of work, they count as one nomination. So the correct count should be as follows:
Cheryl: 2 – once by herself in 2006, once as co-choreographer w/Nick Kosovich in 2006
Tony: 1 – by himself in 2006
Louis: 1 – by himself in 2007
Julianne: 2 – by herself in 2008, & with Derek in 2009 for “Great Balls of Fire”
Derek: 3 – with Julianne in 2009 for “Great Balls of Fire”, by himself in 2010, and also with Chelsie for the acoustic paso in 2010
Dmitry: 1 – for his Argentine tango for Chelsie & Joshua on SYTYCD in 2009
Chelsie: 1 – for the acoustic paso with Derek in 2010
Mark: 1 – by himself in 2011
Oh, I hope you are right for him and this Season, Heidi! I didn’t know that.
Heidi, I checked and they are allowed to submit up to three dances this year. And they ave six nominees instead of six this year. Yes, they do not have to but why not to help your chances by submitting three dances.
Yes, that routine was with Alex which was awesome.
Derek being a past nominee, I was not disappointed for him missing out this year. I am just sad that awesome fifties paso missed on a nomination based on being close to the deadline. It was superior to most of the nominees this year.
Mark only has one nomination. Three dances equals one nomination. Based on that math, Derek as four nominations.
Louis did sit out after being nominated.
Oops, meant six nominees instead of five.
I think Tom is the show’s best chance at a win. The show has no chance of winning the competition category.
Er, Derek only has three nominations: one with Julianne, one with chelsie and one that consists of two dances. Am I forgetting one? Mark has one nomination for three dances.
Why not? Because one poor dance can torpedo you chance of winning.
Frankly, Derek and jennifers AT was better than anything done this past season and should have been nominated. I don’t care how many times he’s been nominated before.
LOL, maddy, that’s pretty creative math you have going there!! So, Derek’s nom for two dances only counts as one, but marks one nom with three dances counts as three?? Ooookay.
I agree with you Heidi. It was better. It was most deserving of the dwts dances but Emmy voters disagree with us, Heidi 🙂
one poor dance can hurt you. But if believe you have three strong dances, why not? No one is willing going to submit one dance they do not believe in. I think Mia won last year in the strength of one dance anyway. Her addiction dance. I think Stacey can win on the strength of her mad world dance.
It really annoys me to see bad behavior rewarded – IMO Mark acted like a petulant child for most of the season.
I’m just going to concentrate positive energy for Tom to win! 🙂

You know what, Beth? The same person using different screen names to post on the same board in the same threads is called sockpuppetting, and it’s not looked upon kindly in ANY part of the internet. On many boards it’s actually something that can get you banned, so… you know… I don’t think Heidi needs schooling. Just sayin’….
I agree with Evaine. You started it, Beth, by changing your username.
I’ve always hated sock puppets – so desperate to not be the sole voice that you create an alternate identity. And yes, it could get you banned, so watch your step. As for privacy – her privacy is fine. If I wanted to violate it I would just post her email address. If her privacy is that important, not posting is an option.
We protect our readers’ privacy by not sharing their email addresses – that does not mean we stand idley by & let them deceive everyone by posting under multiple names so as to make their opinion seem more widely held. It’s kind of…lame.
If Mark is indeed so “magical”, then he probably doesn’t need fans masquerading around as multiple people in order to prove it 😉
Actually, beth didn’t change her name (I don’t think – I haven’t actually checked), it was Kelly who was feeling lonely. 🙂
I’m seriously considering instituting two TWOP rules: no talking about the boards on the boards and no sock puppetry. Both activities cause problems every time. I expect that the board talk will start in a few minutes, since we’ve already tried socks on for size. 🙂
Bwahaha…..magical.
Lame…and desperate.
I thought I’d read that ‘boarding’ was last week’s hot thing and this week it was ‘owling’? 😉
Oh wait… that was PLANKING. *facepalm*
Hoooo….
Jesus…I just got beer up my nose, evaine!! Alcohol abuse!!
Sowwy!! 🙂
I am not Alexis or Kelly, but how do you know that more than one person didn’t use the same computer? Just because more than one name is used from the same IP address, doesn’t mean it is the same person.
Same email address, honey – sock puppets sometimes get carried away, and think they’re more clever than they are. The smart thing to do would be to change it – but I would still call bullshit. The odds of two people in one house posting the same things isnt that great.
Fair enough.
Yeah, and so are we. I hope a banning is in your future soon.
