DWTS Season 13, Week 1 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??
Yay!!! We are once again back in season on DWTS…let the games begin. Be on the lookout for all of our regular features from all of the usual suspects, including Courtney’s Power Rankings, my Dancing by the Numbers, Marianya’s stats….and The Cheesecake Awards. My personal favorite. 🙂
And away we go – I will add the dance order as they’re tweeted. Keep in mind that usually on the first night the dance order matches the last two digits of the phone number, SO I have assumed that is the case for right now. During final dress rehearsal the order sometimes gets changed but the phone number does NOT. I’ll be watching to make sure I have the right dance order and I’ll update as we go through the show if necessary.

We have lift off!!!! The first “Who’s Dancing What…” of the new season (***doing a happy dance***).
Had to chuckle when I saw Chaz/Lacey were up last — that was a no brainer. Val and Maks dancing back to back was inevitable, too.
Carson and Anna as the first dance was a bit of a surprise. Any thoughts on what they did (or didn’t do) to draw that spot?
Ooops, sorry Kate. I did actually have it in there but I had additional information I had to delete – saving it for tomorrow night. 🙂
I don’t actually know that Carson/Anna ARE first – it’s just a guess on my part by process of elimination. You’ll note that I have no call in information or dance order for them – they’re just kinda sitting there. 🙂

Looks like Val and Maks are dancing one after the other, not sure if that is a good or bad thing. I think its going to be a great show, I am so excited for Monday night to get here already. 🙂
Buttercup, now that we are so close to starting the new season, do you have any interesting observations about the cast that you’d like to share?
Thanks Heidi! Why is 4th the crap spot? Why is it any different from 3rd or 5th or 6th for that matter? Any of those could get lost in the shuffle. What am I missing?
Given that they’re going to close with Chaz, I’m surprised that they’re not leading with Arquette…
They may be leading with Arquette – don’t actually have a number for him yet.
I can see I made a mistake shuffling them into some semblance of order – people are making incorrect assumptions as a result.
Meggie, there is no difference between 3rd, 4th and 5th – all are rather crappy spots. Chynna just can’t really afford that spot, IMO. 6th and 7th are good because they should be at the top of the hour, when people surf. The last two are good because people often tune in to the end. Plus they usually put who they consider the draws toward the end (or first).
Just curious about your thoughts, Heidi – since running 3rd, 4th, & 5th are pretty crappy spots, can the same thing be said about the relative spots (I guess it would be 8th, 9th, and 10th?) in the second hour?
I think Kym/David or Karina/Jr Martinez will b the first couple. The first ones usually has to have a big impact…think the pair that has one of the best dance of the night.
I don’t think it will be K/JR because people who haven’t been watching the clips of him or know his back story will not think of him as being a big draw. Lots of people do know about David A. though, so he’s my guess out of those two. 🙂
To my memory fourth has never been considered a crap shot. Second is the crap shot, where Rob and Cheryl are dancing. Actually everyone one I can think of in recent seasons that danced forth made it to or past halfway. I went back and looked and Rick, Petra, and Jake all danced forth in recent seasons and all made it too or past half way, second on the other hand is not so good, Shannon Doherty danced second first night out, as did Michael Bolton and Wendy Williams…NONE made it past week 3. Im NOT trying to attack what Heidi said at all!! Just from previous records, second is the crappy place to dance. forth isn’t great but not terrible considering most people who will vote will watch the whole show anyway.

Idk something about starting off the season with 2 vwaltz does not seem right…so i would guess ron might have a shot of kicking off the show too. He seems like a decent enough draw with the antics, recent name change etc
As a general rule of thumb, it’s almost always better to dance in the 2nd half of the show than the first, and the 3 key running order positions are 1st, middle (whatever coincides with the start of the 2nd hour), & last (pimp spot) with last being the most coveted position. The biggest ratings draw almost always gets the pimp spot; the first & middle spots are usually given to 2 other standout (albeit less popular) couples. Of the remaining spots, those in the 2nd half are usually better off than those in the first half, since viewership usually increases at the top of the 2nd hour. The remaining spots in the first half of the show (usually 2nd-5th) are collectively the “crap spots”, with 2nd statistically being the worst, in terms of getting sent home. The effect of the crap spot(s) is usually compounded if the celeb in question isn’t particularly well-known…in this case, Chynna. Unless she comes out with an explosive performance Monday night…it would not surprise me if she ended up in danger on Tuesday night. Zach, it’s not really about how previous fours have danced, but what it says about a group, their dance and what it does to their ODDS of staying or going. I mean, hasselhoff danced last, I believe, and Brooke never got the pimp spot. – it’s a reflection of draw and it can have a negative impact if you are in the middle of a crowd and have no personality.
Yeah, Really what you say is true. Brooke never got the pimp spot and made it every week and David H got it first time and got voted off. Obiously Brooke was a better dancer by far but also wasn’t near as well known as the Hoff. There are just so many factors that really go into it. Of the celebs I mentioned that went second on week one, one may of had one the worst reps of anyone ” atleast actors ” on the show ” Shannon ” and some just sucked 🙂 ” Wendy and Michael “. I feel like if Chynna comes out and nails it and endears herself to everyone, she will do very well because her lines on her first day were by far the best of all the girls. She looks as if she has natural ability. If she cracks under pressure, has no personality, and is just a non-event, she probably wont do well AT ALL and neither will anybody else except for probably J.R. who could probably just sit in a chair and have a belch off with Karina and get a standing ovation. 🙂 I feel like Chynna could go either way,

Not surprised at all Maks and Val are back
to back. I shouldve known they were going to put Chaz and Lacey last. The couple that is the most talked about usually goes last so the viewers stay tuned. I remember Kirstie and Maks going last last season. Everyone knew they would be an interesting couple. I thought Kirstie would be awful, and well you see how that turned out. Carson and Annna first, well I guess I’m gonna sit through 5 minutes of commercials so I can see them

@Matt – No one said that going first meant someone was a “good dancer”. We said the couples that go 1st, middle, & last are usually the biggest ratings draws…a couple can suck to high heaven & still be good for ratings, a la Kate Gosselin & Bristol Palin. As the season rolls on & people figure out who the good dancers are, it could change, with the best dancers taking those coveted spots eventually; but in week 1, when no one knows how well the couples will dance, it’s based solely on who they think will draw in viewers.
Now if in the next 24 hours we see a dance order change?? That usually does mean that someone is doing really well if they get moved to a good spot. Sometimes. 🙂 I remember last season the running order changed at the last minute – can’t remember why actually.
Courtney, I think you’re right. The most talked about couple comes up last. Although in week 1, I thought Donny was 1st but I might be wrong. I do remember when Donny was on, they made him wait til about the second half of the show to dance. A friend who works in the television industry said that they made him wait because they wanted people to watch other couples too. If Donny had danced so early, then most people would’ve just watched him dance then turned the TV off or changed channels before the show was over.

They are clearly putting Derek and Ricki at the end to keep everyone tooned in! They did the same with he and Jennifer last year!
Why are we assuming Ron cannot dance? Maybe he will surprise us. Or even if he cannot, as pointed out, he has a big personality. Maybe not on this site, but there are plenty who know who he is and he has been in the media with his name change. I am sure it will draw interest Chad Johnson, now Chad Ochocinco also started off a season. The only one that surprises me is Elisabetta starting the second hour. I think she will be good but she is not a big name. Her ex boyfriend? Yes but not her. Chynna is famous. Wilson Phillips was everywhere in the early nineties and their cameo in Bridesmaid was a fun blast from the past. But like Belinda and the Gos Gos, I do not have this loyalty to vote for them say like when Joey Mac appeared in season one. Even though I loved both. Guess boy bands yield more loyalty, lol.
Anyway, I was betting on Carson or Ron starting because of their personalities so not surprised by Ron going first.
I am surprised that Kristin is going third. She is not a big name but I though she was rumored to be one of the better dancers. Guess she will look better in comparison.
I think the 6th will be JR/Karina & 9th will go to David/Kym. Just guessing.

I thought Nancy might have gotten a better start than 5, as in later in the show because she is controversial – you love her or you hate her! I guess they have a lot of controversy this year! LOL
I know the ratings for DWTS are usually through the roof, usually ‘numero uno’ for this timeslot, however, they want all their apples in the basket when it comes to getting and obtaining those ratings. They are up against some popular potential stiff competition with some shows starting back up in their time slot on Sept. 19 and they don’t want any viewer to touch that dial.
My own opinion is the DWTS starting lineup is weak for my taste. I will still check them out though, having not seen any of Ron and Robs dancing, but then Mark is 3rd and I barely ever watch his dances. UGH!

Only one missing on dwtsgossip is David and that is sixth so guessing that is him.
Inside info or good predictions, but Heidi listed them almost in the correct order.
I am glad JR is going tenth. He is not a household name. But he is good and his story is a draw. I really hope he wins.
Melissa, I think DWTSGossip is talking about the phone numbers, not the positions they will be in when dancing tomorrow. So it looks like David’s is 06 since that’s the only thing missing. The phone numbers doesn’t necessarily correspond with the number of position they are in.
Hold up…. maybe they are corresponding. Doesn’t happen every season but I just paid more attention. You might be right, JR could be 10 then David is 06.
Liz, sorry if that was not clearer but That is what I was pointing out. That David is six phone number. Usually for the first night, the numbers match their dance order. I can only think of a handful of instances like Kurt Warner on premiere night when it did not match up.

I can see why Chazz is last. They always d othat with the celeb that generates them sot press during week one. Why si dancing 4th the bad spot though? Also, I’m thinking Ron and Rob are first and second because Ron has a huge personality and Rob becasue they just want to get him out of the way.
Statistically (and logically) dancing 3rd or 4th is a bad spot – the crap spot. Why? Because you’re not at the beginning and you’re not at the end (where theoretically your dance will be remembered) you get lost somewhere in the middle. From a channel surfing perspective, they want to start with a bang, have good dancers or big names right at the top of the hour (spots 6 and 7) and then have good dancing or big names in the last 2 or 3 spots. That’s the way it usually works out. That does NOT mean, necessarily, that those are the best dancers although if I recall, Kristi Yamaguchi danced first or in the last two spots 8 out of ten weeks on the show. Two of the 8, she danced first.
Contrast that with Brooke Burke who went first 3 times and was in the last 2 three times, never got an encore (most of those went to Lance and Warren) – on night one she danced in the 5th spot. Safe to say they didn’t expect her to do much. 🙂
Week 1, season 8, Lil’ Kim went first and Melissa was last. That ones not hard to figure out. The list goes on…
Most of the time, the phone number coincide with the dance order on the first night, as I said in my post. Occasionally, something happens during dress rehearsal to make them change their minds. We’ll see how much it holds true this time.
Melissa, you might be right, I just can’t remember lol. I do believe JR is 10 and David is 06 but waiting for a confirmation from DWTSGossip just to be sure.

Still no tweet from either David or Kym but since the last digits 06 are the only ones left, then that should be their numbers. My guess is they didn’t tweet the numbers because they probably knew everyone else tweeted theirs and thought fans would know what’s left. Otherwise, it’s strange they’re the only ones who haven’t tweeted the numbers.
David & Kym have been rehearsing their second week’s dance, the jive. Maybe their tooooo busy hehe!
From what I hear, most of the couples are rehearsing their week 2 dance, so I doubt that’s it.
Maybe its just me but the beginning of the show seems so much less exciting than the mid to latter part of the show.
I wonder if Mark reads the blogs, because the most talked about and most interesting couples are dancing later in the show, (starting with Nancy). That has to hurt his ego, which I am sure is just as big this season as last.
Happy that Derek and Ricki are dancing later in the show but why do you think their “vegas odds? are so low ? I know you guys analyze and come from a position of knowing ALOT about the show etc. Does anyone know what goes into the vegas odds predictions ?

This is getting so exciting and I can tell already this is going to be a not only a fun premiere but I fully expect this to be the most watched season premire ever. Chaz Bono? Nancy Grace? Ricki Lake? The Kardashians? = Ratings. Just sayin. Those are great songs that Carson and Anna got with Moves Like Jagger fun catchy song love Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera the one with Nancy and Tristan is cool song by Ceelo. Pretty cool since those artist are from the hit show The Voice. I just hope the band from DWTS doesn’t butcher up the songs .Hope they play the orignial songs from both.

Well, technically the songs are from Maroon 5 and Cee Lo – NOT The Voice. The Voice had to clear them just like DWTS did, only difference was it was likely easier.
@cindy = Unless it’s the artists themselves performing the songs on DWTS, they will never use the original recordings of songs on the show – the cost is exorbitant and would cause all sorts of far-reaching problems…Hulu would have to charge out the tookus to stream the show on-demand, and pretty much every DWTS video on youtube would get deleted by the copyright police. As crummy as the band may be sometimes – I’m somewhat thankful for them, as they keep the show from being completely inaccessible. It’s like pulling teeth trying to find SYTYCD clips sometimes, since they use all original recordings.
Anything on Ricki and Derek’s song for their V.Waltz?
I can’t get any work done…sooo excited for tonight. The reason for the first and last spots are obvious (Ron=personality, Chaz=media buzz). Val and Elisabetta at the top of the 2nd hour…I’m guessing they are really good. I haven’t seen a lot of rehersals video of those two so we shall see.

@Heidi – Yup, spot-on as usual about the songs… In addition to the royalties, you’d also have the issue of cutting the song down to the 1:30 that DWTS uses… so yeah, the band can be pretty crappy at times, but I’m glad they’re there (and on some tunes, they really rock!).

Here’s yet another reason the band is better than the real thing: a lot of the songs they use on the show aren’t necessarily the perfect tempo for ballroom dancing, but the band can tweak the arrangement to make the cha-cha/foxtrot/paso doble/etc. beat stronger and better suited for dancing. So a song like “Boom Boom Pow” that is not nearly foxtrottable in real life because somewhat more suitable in the DWTS universe. Kinda opens the door for a lot larger music selection. And I’m with you, Sally – the band can suck at times, but they also rock the house every now & then 🙂

As for Nancy’s song, seem to remember another ‘not size zero’ gal kicking her DWTS experience off with a Ceelo Cha Cha and that worked out pretty well for her. :-:)
Maybe their pecking order WAS based on their dancing. That’s part of what we’re saying. The exciting or popular people aren’t usually jammed in the middle of the crowd.

^^^AGREED! J.R and Chynna are certainly the early frontrunners! Both performances were beautiful! The dancing was not the best ever on a premire night but you know what. THAT’S OK! All of these people are total fish out of water and this is going to be a process! An awesome one too. Im excited to watch them grow and blossom. Tnight I saw alot of untapped potential and that excites me! Carson had me fist pumping in my house too! Loved it! I can’t wait for the power rankings! 🙂

1- Ron – Hot mess. Was it me or did he remind you of Dennis Rodman?
2- Rob- So nervous it looked painful.
3-Kristin – fell flat. She was no where near the energy level of Mark (which is tuned to over the top) so the contrast hurt her.
4-Chynna – sooo beautiful. Very surprised she did not get lost in the shuffle at all! I wonder if she has had ballet? Also wonder if she will be good in the latin dances?
5-Nancy- she was having fun but needs to be technically stronger to hang in there. She’s no Kirstie Alley 🙁
6- David- very nice waltz. He did great but was a little nervous and it showed on his face if there was a slight misstep.
7- Elisabetta – fell flat. Nerves must have got to her. She has a natural chemistry with Val and is very beautiful but she totally lacks confidence out there. I am super annoyed with Bruno’s comment about her being good in bed (no repeats of last season with Karina and Ralph!). What was Val thinking using a bed? And no shirt?? It took Maks several seasons to figure that out. Also the props didn’t really fit and seemed just awkward.
8- Hope- very nice waltz. She seemed a little nervous at the end but it was good. She needs to work on being elegant though. I thought Chynna and Ricki had more grace. She needs to step it up.
9- Carson- Super fun but it was a little all over the place.
10- JR – soo good. Definately the best male dancer.
11- Ricki – so elegant. She and Chynna are really on par.
12- Chaz – so glad he had fun. So much better than I thought. I wondered if he had rhythm and he does!
WTF Performance: Ron Artest.. and Carson at times xD
Best performance of the night: Chynna Phillips.. Entertaining one: Chaz Bono..
Promising one: JR Martinez / Ricky Lake / Hope Solo
The Disappointment: Elisabetta Canalis
As for the production of the show:
The new pros didn’t fill my expectations..
The stage.. I feel like it’s TOO big for them.. It outshined the dancers sometimes..
The camera guys need to improve their coordination, as seen on JR’s V. Waltz.
And please, stop those shoots from like a mile of distance, we’re actually not able to see the dancing technique from those angles!
It was a Good Show.. Looking forward for improvement!
