DWTS Season 13, Week 5 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
Here’s the trend for the week: rumba rumba tango tango samba samba….jive foxtrot?? Ummm….yeah, love me some theme weeks. It makes it SO easy to compare the dancers to each other. :::rolls eyes::: Rob versus Nancy? Don’t much care to see either Rumba…sorry, fans. I think Hope and David both could do really well with the tango and I think the judges want them around for a while so these should be no brainers. The sambas?? Well, JR will rock it and Chaz won’t – mission accomplished there, too. Carson’s Jive scares the crap outta me and Ricki’s Foxtrot?? Well, that scares me too, but only because I know what song they are dancing to – and they kinda got screwed (again). However, they are FAR from alone on crappy song selection…more on that later. 🙂
ETA: Gah, I hate Hello. Ugh.
ETA 2: And Tristan fans breathe a sigh of relief. 🙂 It could have been worse. Can I say I also do NOT like JR’s song. :::sigh::: It’s fine for a Samba, I’m sure, I just don’t like that song.
ETA 3: Yes, we’re aware that Chaz is dancing to Mark and Shawn’s Samba song. 🙂
ETA 4: Squeeeee…..Tainted Love. “Touch me please I cannot stand the way you teaaase!!!”
ETA 5: JR is dancing 4th?? Hmmm…that may or may not be good. 4th of 8th might be at the top of the hour, but dang, we’re gonna have a lot of filler.
ETA 6: Step one in “this is Hope’s week” is complete, she’s dancing first and setting the bar.
ETA 7: You think Hope has it bad? Carson is in the crap spot!

When did Ricki & Derek ever get screwed before? Besides, you know they’ll be fine.
Ricky will do fab coz she has Derek. I’m very confident about this. She also has no competition coz, again, she has Derek. Give the the trophy and call it a season coz I’m ready for Dwts 14
Easy Lover? Bummmm-er. Sucky song. Maybe they’ll slow it down just tad. 🙂
Oh geez, let’s not start this ridiculous broken record, again. Ricki and Derek are NOT shoo-ins for the MBT. I think they’ll make the finals, and I think they should make the finals — Ricki’s working hard and improving, and Derek’s doing his usual excellent job with teaching and choreo. Give everybody a break, please.
Heidi, I agree with you, I’m not looking forward to seeing Rob or Nancy rumba; I’m scared for Carson and think the samba is going to be a hot mess for Chaz. The rest of the crew should be OK.
Heading to the wayback machine and dialing in the 80s. 😛
Where did you hear that Hope and Maks were dancing the Tango to “Living on A Prayer”? Just curious.
I’m certainly not ready to just chalk it up to Derek, but in my opinion Ricki has been slightly over-scored these past couple of weeks.
Given that Derek and Maks are almost certainly gone after this season, who’s coming up?
I like “Easy Lover” & “Livin’ On a Prayer”. *g* They bring back some good memories of my young, married life from back in the day with hubby #1 and the soccer dances we used to go to. Yes, hubby #1 was a soccer player. 🙂
And I know Carson doing the jive has people all 0.0, but I wonder… maybe it’s the one dance that suits his almost spasticity of limb? At any rate, it’s going to be fun and colourful, I’m sure.
And, serious question here, why is “Easy Lover” such a crappy song choice? I need ‘splanations, Lucy!! 🙂
Well, BB, would you feel lucky to get stuck with a song from a movie like Psycho with all sorts of crazy phrasing & tempo changes, while everyone else was dancing to fun songs from Disney movies? There’s your answer.
Maddy, if you’re so ready for season 14, why are you still bugging everyone here that’s still invested in this season? If you think Ricki’s got the MBT in the bag, I think you’re in for a very rude awakening…because barring JR getting screwed a la Ralph by the judges, or committing PR suicide by biting the head off of a bat on live television, I daresay HE has the MBT in the bag.
I love “Easy Lover”, but it’s a shitty foxtrot. The beat is not a strong foxtrot one…I’d say it’s almost closer to a jive. Unless Harold’s got some crazy tweaks up his sleeve, Ricki & Derek are gonna look like they’re moving in slo-mo compared to the beat of the song. I’m excited for Rob’s rumba for the sole reason that I love his song 😛 Viva la 80s!!!
Ah, okay, it’s a beat thing. Gotcha. I think they’ll be fine though.
And just saying… Flash Gordon, The Pink Panther, Rocky weren’t Disney pictures. Easier to deal with, yeah, but not all Disney flicks.
Bethann – the first rule about song spoilers at PureDWTS is that you don’t ask about where they came from. The second rule about song spoilers at PureDWTS is that you don’t ask where they came from 🙂 If we told you where they came from, we wouldn’t have a source anymore. But let’s put it this way: we feel confident enough in them that we post them, and anyone that’s a regular here will tell you that we’re pretty adamant about only posting information we know to be true. Take it with s grain of salt, if you wish – but we’ve only gotten 1 song spoiler wrong this season, and that’s because a song ended up not getting cleared at the last minute. Does that answer your question?
Courtney, question for you. If Harold has to tweak Easy Lover to make it work for Ricki and Derek’s foxtrot, what did they rehearse to during the week? Do the couples all get a rough-cut of the music as done by the DWTS band or an edited commercial release of the song?
Definitely looking forward to Hope and Maks’ tango to “Livin’ On a Prayer”. It should be amazing.
Courtney/Heidi:
First I want to compliment you guys the best info on dwts ever.
I look forward to each week because of you guys. You make it that much exciting. I had a feeling Maks and Hope had “Living on a Prayer”. This should be interesting.
Ricki and Derek with Easy Lover, this is were his genius comes in. maybe they will slow it down. Anyhow Derek will make it interesting. As Courtney said, take it with a grain of salt. It should be a fun night! Love you guys! But I also feel Rick and Derek were scored correctly, Derek is a genius and deserves every ounce of credit!
I can’t see Nancy doing a Rhumba, or Chaz a Samba. they will last a few more weeks as will David. Anyway Jr. and Ricki will be in the final!
Please, “Easy Lover” may be a shitty song choice, but with Derek as your partner and the tango as your dance, the “Psycho” Bernard Herrmann score has so much potential. You know who was screwed this season? Carson the week of his quickstep. And Beyonce didn’t do Kristin Cavallari any favors, only because she couldn’t live up to the comparison. But not Ricki until now!
And I bet Ricki’s foxtrot will be like Jennifer’s foxtrot to “Love and Marriage” (the “Married with Children” theme song). It may not have the most wow factor of the dances or the best music, but it’ll come down to Derek’s choreography and Ricki’s natural grace.
BB, you don’t know much about music and ballroom apparently. Don’t sweat it, I don’t really either know what music works well, either. 🙂 So I asked Courtney, and SHE told me it was a bad song for a Foxtrot. When else has he been hosed?? Well, do you honestly believe that Psycho was easy?? Or a tango to Pretty Woman?? Or the 50’s Paso?
Just because someone makes a shitty piece of music work, it doesn’t mean that the music isn’t shitty. It just means the person is talented enough to work around it. But don’t worry – Derek and Ricki aren’t the only ones who got screwed this week. In fact, I would say that Hope and Carson got the only two good songs that I know of. No, I don’t think I know Nancy’s yet, so relax you Tristan people. 🙂
Sigh, I never said the Phil Collins was a good song choice, but I’m confident that Derek and Ricki will dance well enough and get good enough scores to be more than safe this week. I’m sure Psycho wasn’t easy at all, but purely as a viewer, it’s a great piece of music to watch a pair dance to. Unlike the Flash Gordon theme. Similar, I’m sure it was hard to sell Pretty Woman as a tango, but it’s a classic song. Except for Chynna’s slip-up last week, people are most often screwed on DWTS when their music is awful and doesn’t connect.
Who chooses the music? How much say/veto power do the pros and celebs have? I don’t think Ricki and Derek would ever choose “Easy Lover,” but on the other hand, I’m sure Tony & Chynna requested “Hold On,” and last year Florence & Corky wanted the “Brady Bunch” theme song.
I do wish TPTB would be more concerned with making the tempo of the music match the tempo of the dance, rather than an exercise in challenging Derek! I just listened to “Easy Lover” and (imo) it’s way too fast for a classy dance like the foxtrot. It’s very unfair to Ricki.
Easy Lover! I love that song!!!!!
Easy Lover? I agree if Derek can make the theme from Psycho work. He can handle ANY song that is given to him. Pure Brilliance… 🙂
JR and Karina may have the perfect song choice this week… JR will knock his Samba out of the park… Judges better not screw him again this week.
Geez, “some” people around here really are the turd in the punchbowl…
So grateful to you guys and gals for all you do. Seriously, you could just post all your other stuff and leave us clueless for Monday night, but you really go out of your way to make this a fun and exciting place to visit. *Sigh* If only some of your readers would do the same…
When I saw “Easy Lover,” I thought, “Wow, really?” But if anyone’s up to the task, it’s Derek, and I think he and Ricki can handle it well.
Very interested to see the rumba and samba songs. I, too, am concerned for the rumbas and for Chaz and the samba. But all we can do now it hope for the best and pray the judges are in good moods.
Anyone know if Len got that basket of bran muffins I sent? Anyone…?
I was wondering how they (producers) choose the music and if they know which dance it is going to paired with?
Yes, JR and Karina, have a feeling the samba is going to take them back to the top! Love this team, my season 13 MBT winners!
I had a feeling Hope and Maks would dance to livin on prayer. The team tango dance to you give love a bad name was to good to repeat tge song. I doubt the dance quality has to do with song recycling, but whatever. I actually like livin on prayer better
See, Cidra, that’s part of the problem. I think they’re listening to a edited commercial CD up until today when they do blocking. That is part of what threw Chynna in to a tailspin – the music was very different from what she was used to rehearsing to. You hear her say that in one of the clips from the show. If you get a funky song like Easy Lover to begin with, what is the orchestra going to do to it?? That said, Derek is one of the pros who gets right in there with Harold and works with him – or so I’ve heard, anyway. 🙂
BB, giving a shitty song to Derek because he’s Derek and will do something with it is hardly fair to Ricki. And just because Kristin CAN”T pull off Beyonce doesn’t mean it WAS a shitty song choice. Just because you claim it’s easy doesn’t make it true.
Ahhhh…..I see. BB is really Zach 2.0. I should have guessed by the lack of reasoning skills.
@Magnolia – Good one! Made me chuckle… basket of bran muffins.. Thanks for that! 🙂
Could his be the week for *10* scorepad for JR and Karina? Hope so!
Magnolia, believe me – Courtney and I have had the “fuck it, we’ll just keep it all to ourselves” conversation more than once. 🙂
If your arguments were so valid, you wouldn’t feel the need to so sharply criticize the reasoning skills of someone whose opinion simply differs from your own.
I didn’t claim anything was easy, and I never said the shitty Phil Collins was fair to Ricki. But the Psycho music, Pretty Woman, Nicole’s ’50s Paso Doble – even if they weren’t easy to choreograph to, I do NOT think from a viewer standpoint that they were shitty pieces of music!
Newsflash, I can live without song spoilers. I won’t come to this site if I can’t feel like I can post without being ripped apart.
Chaz and Lacey are going last again?
No Madeline, they just have the last of the phone numbers – no dancing order has been leaked yet. 🙂
:::rolls eyes::: Heard it all before. Buh bye. Although I’m sure you’ll be back.
Heidi, been through something similar in the last week myself. But the bottom line is, the people who respect and appreciate what you do FAR outnumber the turds in said punchbowl.
We in MacManus-Land do appreciate what you do and how hard you work, so thank you ever so!
Wanna bet? I went 12 seasons already without ever visiting this website despite being a huge DWTS fan. I already unsubscribed from your mailing list. Goodbye; your intolerance won’t be missed.
See you soon. 🙂
Thanks Magnolia, I do appreciate that. You don’t really realize until you work on a few websites and/or Twitter accounts how taxing it is. Unless you’re kissing someones ass, you’re a hater. If you like someone, it’s all “you’re so biased”. Well duh. We all are. Own it. Or as Courtney said earlier….STFU. 🙂
Early predictions:
Those who will do good:
1)J.R. 2) Ricki 3)Hope 4) David
Those who will do OK:
5) David 6) Carson
The probably bottom 3:
7) Chazz 8)Nancy 9) Rob (these three because these three seem like te logical next three to go since Nancy kinda platoued, Rob just annoys me sometimes and he just kinda paltoued as well, Chazz because he isn’t up to par with everyone else but we have seen not up to par dancers go far so idk (ex. Cloris, Bristol, Kelly O, etc).
Saying that, the songs they are given si either going to make or break them. For example : Meta/Ron’s cha cha song (song was a kiss of death). So in this sense its like American Idol with song choice being key lol. I gotta go back to my 20 pag paper so wish me luck guys.
I hope the props department is hard at work on a plaster bust of Rob. And hopefully Cheryl is good at feigning blindness 🙂
Damn, I actually guessed that song (as somewhat of a joke) for Tristan and Nancy.
If Cheryl dances blindfolded, everyone take a shot!!!
Wow, Ricki & Derek definitely have a difficult song to work with for a Foxtrot. I was hoping for something that would have allowed them to incorporate a tap move or two into their performance. I’m sure Derek will work it out, he’s incredible and Ricki will work her butt off to perform well. Good Luck Drickilous!
Thanks for the excellent info you all provide here. It always gets me excited for the show.
Hello is the embodiment of cheesetastic 80’s video’s. I mean the ridiculously long and flowing jerry curls and the scary looking bust. I remember seeing that video back in the day and thinking…WTF was someone having a Helen Keller moment?
Wow Easy Lover? not the most popular or known 80’s song, of all songs from the 80’s most would have been better than that lol
Derek will probably create the greatest Foxtrot ever to it though! He’s that good!
Can’t see Nancy pulling off a Rumba at all this week, the choice of dance for her this week may be her downfall, I bet she gets 6’s for sure.
I hope she does well & who knows she may shock everyone, she has Tristan & who the hell would not be ready to Rumba with him!
I can see the judges now starting to panic as of this week & wanting the lesser dancers gone so they will for sure give Chaz,Nancy & Carson lower scores, most likely 5 & 6’s just to make it harder for their fanbases to keep them alive.
They must know by now that those 3 have pretty strong fanbases & that soemthing else will have to be done to get them off LOL hence the much lower scores I predict this week for those 3.
Toni, you’re making me nauseous. 🙂
Lisa, that’s not necessarily true about Chaz and Carson – we still can’t really be sure. The problem is, Chynna was only ONE point ahead of Carson and was tied with Chaz. That means Carson needed LESS than 5k votes to stay over Chynna and Chaz needed ONE. That’s nothing. And we’ve been saying all along that we thought that Chynna could be Audrina in terms of fan base.
PH- ???
First….how the h*** does Rob get the best songs??? God Damnit! it’s getting frustrating! and…i love Phil Collins, i really do! but Easy lover for a Foxtrot? yes Derek is a genius and he is rises to the occasion…but, every week must be a choreo challenge? Hope is going to number 1 this week…tango…Bon Jovi…Len’s comments? top of the leader board? i think so!!! J.R. will nail the Samba….he’s got the Latin blood going for him. He should be more then ok this week…Carson..he redefined entertainment on DWTS…but i don’t think Jive is his dance…it’s so precise and controlled and Carson is…not, to say the least. Nancy and Rumba…don’t see it happening …and Chaz…does it really matter what dance amd what song he has…it didn’t until now….so…let’s call it viewers choice.
Yeah true, I guess Chaz & Carson did not need that many votes more than Chynna cause I kind of suspected she did not have the biggest or most determined fanbase.
Sometimes I think the music is related to the storyline TPTB want to show. As Heidi said on another post somewhere, this week is Hope and Maks’ time to shine – good song, good dance and time for them to shape up and ‘become a contender’. After losing too good dancers, they want to map out who they want their final 3 to be.
I expect JR will rock the Samba and he deserves to be fairly scored – he’s been underscored, especially on the jive: again, storyboarding – as Courtney said above – he’s pretty much got the MBT in the bag so they’ve been bigging up other couples.
Don’t get me wrong – Derek and Ricki are fabulous and they deserve to be in the finals. But after getting 10s so early in the season, I’d be surprised if they weren’t marked down a bit this week and the song choice seems to fit. Mind you as a Derek fan, I’d like to bet that he produces a great foxtrot, I’m just guessing they won’t be the highest scorers again!
I’d also think it’s really unfair when one couple has a dance that no one else does – like Kristin with her Samba, Carson with his Viennese Waltz and now Ricki and the Foxtrot. If the dance is not outstanding, then it makes it much harder to compare. Still I am looking forward to some 80s cheesy music!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? I’m a child of the 80’s and I’ve never heard of True or Spandeau Ballet… Thank God for YouTube.
But yes, it could have been MUCH worse. 🙂
Me too, Magnolia. Bet I’ve looked at 20+ music videos today 😯 As soon as I heard the first bars of “True” I recognized it, tho, so it must’ve been very very popular.
Shep, me too! As soon as I heard the first few bars, I thought, “Oh, yeah, it’s that song from “Sixteen Candles” and “The Wedding Singer!” I honestly thought it was called something else. D’oh!
It’ll be interesting for sure, but I do like it better for a rumba than “Hello.”
Oh, forgot to add…
“Conga” is one fast song! JR is going to be friggin’ booking it around that ballroom…
Lisa W:
Hi! No offense, but Derek as been said many times, is a enius, I am sure they gave him “Easy Lover” because TPTB know he can produce brilliance. I would think the other couples need to be a bit more concerned about how they dance, and what they’re dancing to, Rob, Chaz, Nancy and Carson really need to step it up a lot and Hope and Maks really have pressure on them, she really needs a good Tango.
Last week couldn’t have been more difficult for Derek with the Psycho Tango, but it was awesome, and I am sure he will do the same this week. I think they are giving him these challenges for a reason!
You know I meant “genius”.
Another one I looked up today was “Careless Whisper” .. that would have been fantastic as a rumba song. “Hello” almost seems too slow, even for a rumba.
and Amen! to your Conga note. No fringe on that booty so we know it’s going to be alllll JR! 8)
OMG True by Spandal Ballet? LMAO they want Nancy gone for sure ugh!
Some of us over on the MacManus Fan Page were hoping for “Careless Whisper.” I have heard a salsa version of that song, so maybe someone will pull it out some salsa time…
Well I have changed my mind, I think it’s good that Nancy & Tristan did not get something like Crazy for You or Careless Whisper, at least this is not that sexy & doesn’t imply anything too racy with the lyrics haha
Lisa, it’s actually not a bad choice for a rumba song. It’s got a good beat and tempo to it. I just personally don’t care for the song. However, as I said above, it’s a better rumba song than “Hello.” By far, IMO.
YES I wanted Careless Whisper, I picked it as a perfect Rumba song, but it’s too sexy for Nancy dancing with Tristan I guess lol
Just saw on Twitter that Cheryl and Rob are dancing 5th.
My friend and I have a bet to see how much spandex we’ll be seeing tomorrow night. 😉
On my way to YouTube to listen to some music… Namely, “True” and “Spandeau Ballet”….
“Conga” for JR.. I thought so!! Woowhee, that bootie is gonna be shaking… 😯
Evaine…I’m curious too, why Easy Lover is such a bad song…I think Rikki and Derek will do fine with it. “Hello” would be my choice for a not so good rumba song…I think Hope and Maks will do a really awesome tango..not thrilled with the Bon Jovi song, but they’ll do ok..Can’t wait to see JR and Karina’s samba to Gloria Estafan. I CAN wait to see Nancy and Tristan’s rumba to “True”….I really like Tristan and hope he stays, but this might be too much for him to overcome. 🙂 Thanks for giving us these little “Advance notices” I appreciate y’all sharing. No questions asked. 😉
Sandy, I agree with you. That’ll be one fast bootie. Back in high school, we had a dance unit, and samba was somehow included. Our teachers put on Conga for a laugh…nothing like watching a bunch of 14 and 15 year old kids trying to shake their booty. LOL
Chaz and Lacey are dancing 6th, as per Twitter. 🙂
So, Chaz and Lacey are dancing to Kook and the Gang’s “GET DOWN ON IT”? I gotta say that is the one song I hear, and this old bat can’t sit still ..I have to get up and get down! Chaz might do ok with this one. 🙂
KooL and the Gang…sheesh, can’t even type.
Awww!! Kool and the Gang.. Talk about a Guilty Pleasure…. Hey, it was the 80’s…. 🙂
You know, Auntie B, the thing that worries me about “Get Down On It” is how it’s gonna SOUND! *LOL*
I completely agree with what someone above me said, Is it really necessary to make EVERY week a choreo challenge for Derek? Poor guy. Hopefully they will pull off something awesome.
I hope Rob rocks the Jheri curl tomorrow, PLEASE
Kool & The Gang, wow, that’s a great song. Don’t know how they’ll do though!-Oh well!
Get down on it, wow, that brings back some good memories.
I was joking, Toni….I was slow to add the smiley. All that talk about the Hello video. Eww. 🙂
whoa…”get down on it” for a samba? 🙄
Pretty sure Courtney already answered why Easy Lover is a bad song for a Foxtrot. Answered it pretty well, in fact. 🙂
As one person has already had trouble with – it’s not that the song is a bad song, but a bad song for a *Foxtrot*.
Well, at least I like *most* of the songs… 😉 Never have been fond of Spandau Ballet, though.
Auntie Bellum, I’m with you – LOVE, LOVE “Get Down On It”!!! 😀 I’ll be trying to shake my fat fanny during that one!
Carson – Sweet Baby Jaysus in the Tuxedo T-Shirt, I’m worried about him doing the Jive! I’ll be cringing and peeking through my fingers when he & Anna dance!
I look for Chaz, Carson, and Nancy to be lurking at the bottom of the leader board; JR, Ricki, and Hope at the top. COME ON, MONDAY NIGHT!!!!! 😀
I TOLD you guys that Ricki wasn’t the only one that got screwed with a poor song choice. 🙂
Just wanted to point out that each week Derek and Ricki have gotten a song that has never been used before on DWTS while Karina and JR have gotten retreads every week except Week 3, when they got to select the song. Week 1 Karina and JR danced their Viennese Waltz to “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson. Previously, Maksim and Mel B danced a Viennese Waltz to “Breakaway.” Week 2 Karina and JR danced their Jive to “Jump, Jive and Wail” by the Brian Seltzer Orchestra. Previously, Kim Johnson and Joey Fatone danced a Jive to that same song. Week 4 Karina and JR danced their Foxtrot to the “Pink Panther” theme. Previously, Mark Ballas and Kim Kardashian danced a Foxtrot to that music as well. And now this week, Karina and JR are expected to dance a Samba to “Conga” by Gloria Estefan. Previously, Edyta and George Hamilton danced a Samba to this song and the pros also danced to it when Gloria Estefan appeared on the show.
Derek’s fans can “complain” that he is getting difficult songs to choreograph to, but at least the songs are not “tired old” songs that are identified with a particular dance. It’s easier to be creative and to make a splash when something has not been done before. Plus, it gives the judges something to rave about so that they don’t have to address any flaws or errors in Ricki’s dancing.
P.S. I am not anti-Derek or anti-Hough. I rooted and voted for him when he was paired with Brooke Burke and Jennifer Grey, and I also rooted and voted for Julianne when she was paired with Apolo and Helio.
Chiming in late, as usual 😛 So bear with me as I address multiple topics…
…I think I explained it early on in this thread, but the problem with “Easy Lover” as a foxtrot is that the foxtrot beat is buried underneath a heavy drumbeat & synth line. The result? Ricki & Derek are probably gonna look like they’re moving in slo-mo compared to all the crazy accents in that song. And on the flip-side, I actually think “True” is a perfect 80s rumba song…which is why I suggested it in Heidi & I’s 80s music post 🙂 It’s got the right beat, the right mood, & is very representative of the 80s. Plus it’s a song everyone seems to recognize…even if they don’t know the name of it. 😉
I’m surprised no one has mentioned that “Get Down on It” was Shawn & Mark’s samba, since some people feel the need to remind us of every ditto 😉 (HINT: I have a freakishly near-photographic memory…just ask Heidi ;-)) Go watch it on YouTube…they did just fine. It’s got a nice, strong, slow samba beat…which is probably why they gave it to Chaz, & stuck JR with the damn near inhumane “Conga”. Gloria Estefan drives me nuts. “Conga” is for me what “Hello” is for Heidi 😛
And speaking of “Hello”…I just love it for the simple fact that it’s unapologetically cheesy 😀 If memory serves, I think Rob Sr. & Lionel Richie might have been buddies back in the day. Just one thing has always befuddled me about the video for that song, though: the chick in it is blind, Lionel, not deaf. I’m sure she can hear you singing “Hello” everywhere she goes. Stalker fail. 🙂
I really don’t think that it being a song never used before has anything to do with how they are scoring Ricki. And really, I would take a recycled song over Easy Lover ANY DAY.
These judges can’t even remember their own rules, you expect them to remember songs that have been used before AND the dance??? Hell, *I* can’t even do that and I’m writing about this show every week. I didn’t even remember that Derek and Cheryl danced to Billy Joel just two seasons ago and I’m a Derek fan. I think you are giving their memories far too much credit in looking for reasons why they’re doing well compared to others.
LOL, IrisandLilies, the average viewer does not remember what couple danced to what song 5 or 6 seasons ago. Heck, I’m a diehard fan and didn’t remember it. I’m sure JR/Karina will not be complaining about that song and will make it their own as will all the other couples.
Not complaining but the fact of the matter is Easy Lover is an extremely fast song for a Foxtrot. I hope he will be able to create something great to it as it does present a challenge.
Good Luck to all the couples!
Courtney, I’ve now listened to “Conga” twice today and it really got to me the second time – in a bad way. The beat doesn’t let up for a second! JR & Karina are going to end up on the floor after that Samba! Whew!
It can’t be stated enough! Heidi, Courtney and team are the best! The info they search out for us is amazing! So happy I found this site several seasons ago. Too bad some people have to bring the negative from time to time, but they eventually get their walking papers! 🙂
One of my points is that Derek and Ricki are getting songs that are not associated/identified with a particular genre of dance. When a song is not associated/identified with a particular genre of dance, the dance that the couples perform will likely appear more fresh/original/novel to judges, and the judges either consciously or unconsciously probably reward the couple for “making something old seem new again.”
And, being a creative person myself, I would much rather start with something new than have to rework something old. I also find that the greater the challenge, the better my work is. I would bet that Derek, as an artist, works best when he is challenged.
I agree that “Easy Lover” isn’t the ideal foxtrot song, and I agree with the sentiment that the producers seem to keep giving Derek difficult music…maybe because he is a choreographic and dancing genius. Hopefully, Derek enjoys the creative challenge. All I know is that his routines never disappoint, and I’m really looking forward to Monday to see what he comes up with!
Awww I wanted Broken Wings.
Yeah, I got your point, Iris, and I still don’t agree. Yes, Derek says he does his best work when they give him crazy songs – but it’s not fair to him or Ricki to go far off the reservation. At some point Derek WILL fail – it’s inevitable. Everyone fails. And it will be due to a crazy song and it will be at his partner’s expense.
samba: chaz and lacey same song mark and shawn…
LOL you write it on the post =p sorry… (hate this recycling…)
Heidi, sorry, but this is going back to way early in this string when you answered my question about the music the couples rehearse to. I was thinking… since they practice to an edited commercial cut, that must have really been a challenge for Hope when she rehearsed her personal story to that other song and then at the last minute she had to cha-cha to something else. I’m not saying it affected her performance, but it must have been freaky.
Don’t the dancers have some wiggle room as far as song choice? I mean, if they got a really bad song, do you think they could try to get another one?
I suppose that could set them behind a little bit, but sometimes it seems like it’d be more than worth it. I’m curious if anyone knows about this…
I think they give Derek difficult songs because he is up to the task. It makes for great drama/story, and he gets lauded when he shows his genius. It’s like, handicapping the guy that is so good they have to make it more interesting – after all these wins, that’s how I see it. I’m sure he’ll do a good enough job that they won’t get eliminated, and that’s what is important. It’s also very possible he does another amazing routine and they get gabillions of votes and support.
Rory, I think that happened to Lacey and Kyle. They got a song they absolutely COULD NOT work with and changed it out a couple of days in. I could be wrong though. I could only WISH for a portion of Courtney’s wonderful memory! *LOL* Someone help me!!
@Evaine – You are right, it was Kyle and Lacey and I believe it was an Eagles song.. I think they said they never heard of it… Man do I feel old!!!
YES Sandy!!! It was an Eagles song! And a real popular one that they said they never heard of. I felt ANCIENT! *phew* Thank you for vindicating my on-again off-again memory! 😀
Figmentation, I see where you’re coming from in terms of “handicapping” a top-notch choreographer like Derek to level the playing field. However, as I think Heidi said somewhere up above (I’m too lazy to go look for it), that’s not exactly sporting to Ricki. Most of the pros are on many seasons, so if Derek blows it on one impossible piece of music, no big deal. It could turn out to be a deal-breaker for the celeb’s chances. They’ve only got one season.
I agree, I think this is the week Nancy goes, Rumba? can’t see her pulling this off, sadly I hope I am wrong but the song is not that great either, maybe I will be shocked lol who knows……
I understand, but Ricki also gets an advantage at having Derek as her pro – so while she may be handicapped and that can seem unfair, if you swing it the other way it’s unfair that she has him – and by request. Ricki has some natural grace that I fully expected her to have – but if she was with Tony, I don’t think she’d be quite so poised to be in the finals already. It may not be “fair” but other couples have gotten shitty songs and deal with it. Sometimes it means their elimination, but I’m pretty confident that it won’t in this case.
Oh yeah just remembered that Tristan’s parents & sister are coming I believe this week to see him dance so how great he will probably be elminated with them in the ballroom? …..where is the sad face icon??
Lisa, it’s not a sure thing that Nancy and Tristan will be eliminated this week. She might do a better rumba than you think, and Chaz and Carson also have dances that aren’t exactly up their alley.
Lisa, his family is here this week and next. He is dancing a pro number with Kym next week, I believe. (Still waiting on confirmation of that.) At least his family will get to see him perfom twice for sure – once with his celeb partner and once more with anothe pro. I really hope Nancy does well with this dance, but who knows? The rumba’s a hard dance, IMO, and though the judges seem to agree that her technique is there (for the most part), she needs to seriously up the performance value this week for her scores to improve. Fingers crossed…
I agree, Magnolia, Tristan’s family will get to see him perform at least twice. I’m sure they know the score and have been watching in Ireland. It’s never easy hearing a loved one being criticized and possibly seeing them “eliminated”, but it’s not the end of the world. I hope they give their best performance on Monday. However, if he and Nancy were to be eliminated on Tuesday, he’d get to spend more time with his family, and that would be nice. Not wishing for it; just saying.
After Kyle and Lacey rejected that Eagles song, I think it was given to Kurt and Anna a few weeks later in the same season. And to my ear at least, it seems to have a solid waltz beat/tempo that was workable. IMO, there have been other more questionable music assignments. For instance, I’ve always wondered whose bright idea it was to have a “Boom Boom Pow” foxtrot – though it was clearly memorable at least for me… 😉
Yeah that’s true, maybe being eliminated is a good thing, he can hang with his family for a couple weeks! LOL just lookin at the positive side since we know they are not going to win right? lol
Just remember Tristan fans, Nancy has quite a fan base. You never know what will happen! Fingers crossed that they’ll be around a little longer. I’m still hoping it will be Rob who goes home this week. 🙂
Look what happens when my phone goes dead 😛 This is basically rehashing, but yeah – Kyle & Lacey were stumped by The Eagles “Take it to the Limit” for storytelling week, so they chucked the CD across the room & got a replacement – “Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop” by Landon Piggush. Kurt & Anna got the Eagles song a few weeks later. So it seems as though they have some wiggle room if they don’t like their song. Although I have to wonder if they might be limited during some weeks, if TPTB don’t have any extra songs cleared, for whatever reason.
I don’t know what the original Eagles song was, but I do remember that Kyle & Lacey were able to substitute “Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop” for it, and I thought their waltz was very sweet. Prettiest Lacey has ever looked, imo.
oops, sorry Courtney! I was typing & didn’t see your post. 🙄
Nancy said on YouTube that she was dancing to Madonna.
I think sometimes they have wriggle room and sometimes they just don’t. Sometimes they have no choice. I also don’t think Derek is the type to blithely reject a song – it’s kinda gutless, actually. And that is also unfair to the other couples who work with the hand they’re dealt.
I’d like to see a link to this video, Pammers. Especially since the pro dance this week is to Madonna…I think you might be confused.
Yeah… i thought nancy was dancing to madonna too?
Well I am sure glad Nancy isn’t dancing to Madonna. That would be scary
How can I forget boom boom pow! Worst foxtrot song ever. BEP songs and Katy Perry songs seem to be cleared always since they are used often. But for foxtrot? Then Karina had to make The Situation look good too? She tried. That was a tough one. Though eighties foxtrot to that song is not a walk in the park either.
I remember Julianne said she asked for another song when she got Jesse’s girl for the tango. But the second one was worse. I guess the show has a back up,probably, just in case.
I meant by that song, easy lover.
I love True for rumba. That is a good song choice, iconic eighties song and fits the dance.
I was hoping for Debbie Gibson or Tiffany. Or them even performing since they just toured together. But at least we got The Bangles.
If I recall correctly, Prince doesn’t generally give permission for his songs to be used, and only made a special exception for Nicole cause she is a good friend. So I wouldn’t count on seeing many songs from the Purple one on DWTS – unless I’m mistaken.
Courtney, it was in one of the little “promo” videos that Tristan and Nancy do each week. When they were talking about the 80’s theme, Nancy said very excitedly, “It’s gonna be Madonna!” And as she’s dancing around, you can clearly see Tristan roll his eyes, shake his head, and say, “No, it’s not.” I think Nancy was just having her fun, like she does in those videos. She was clearly teasing Tristan and being goofy about the 80’s theme. I never thought it was their actual music. Those two rarely “leak” their song, so why would they start now?
I think we all got excited because Madonna had some songs that would have done well. But, like I said, I never really thought it was the gospel.
Figamentation, I remember reading the same thing. He made the exception for her and he said the song was cleared only for Nicole.
That’s a risk too – there is no guarantee that you’ll come out ahead with a better song.
In any case, if he does pull it off there will be a bunch of people in here claiming it was easy and anyone could have done it. 🙂
Wooops, I think the Prince discussion was in the other thread, haha. Oh well. 😛
Prince must’ve been feeling generous that week, since he cleared “You’ve Got the Look” for Erin’s paso doble, too.
Thanks for clearing that up, Magnolia. Guess it goes to show that you’ve gotta pay close attention to the context in which things are said…especially in post-show media. I’ve seen the list of songs for tomorrow night – and sorry, but none of the celebs are dancing to Madonna. Nancy has “True”. She may have wanted Madonna…but we can’t always get what we want 🙂
Courtney, if we all got what we wanted…well, if that was the case, it wouldn’t be Nancy doing the rumba with Tristan tomorrow night. 😉 Hee-hee….
I never take anything Nancy says in the “sneak peek” videos to heart. She’s always teasing about something, and Tristan is usually doing it too. Guess he wasn’t feeling very comedic this week.
BTW, David and Kym have my absolute favorite 80’s song ever! It was my ringtone once upon a time. I may change it back for tomorrow. 🙂
Madeline and Pammers, don’t feel bad. I took Nancy serious as well when she said they were dancing to Madonna. I didn’t hear Tristan say they weren’t.
Vogue, that’s ’cause y’all were too busy looking at the pretty! 😉
That’s it^^!! LOL! Thanks Magnolia for understanding. 😉
Heidi, you aren’t alone in not liking HELLO. I’ve never liked that song.
Yeah, Nancy thought it would probably be Madonna and that the rumba was a fast dance lol….watch her in the video and you can tell she’s doing it behind Tristan’s back to “annoy” him lol.
Vogue:
You might disagree with me, I don’t consider Tristian all that much of a choreographer. He’s kinda boring. He’s dancing isn’t all that either. I wouldn’t put him in the same category with Derek and Maks and Mark. Although I like Nancy after seeing her the past month, but I think the rumba will do her in somehow. The same for Chaz and the samba, you can only support him just so much, but eventually he’ll be gone if not this week, very soon.
I was thinking about “Easy Lover”, maybe the’ll slow it down a bit, its very fast for a foxtrot. But I am sure Derek will come up with something. Last week I worried about the Psycho theme, and they brought the house down!
Vogue I was looking at all the pretty too! LOL I loved the video with both Tristan and Val!
This thread makes me realize how mediocre a lot of the dancing (and music) is this season. It’s as if the producers went over to a shopping mall and pulled a bunch of regular people out for the show. This is proof positive that, without some sort of fame or sports background, no one would watch DWTS (or want to be on it – brutal!).
Pam 😉 !! lolllll
Love Tainted love! It is a great song for David&Kym. I hope they nail it.
Vogue, Heidi, Courtney, I use to ‘LOVE” Hello!-LOL The only thing I didn’t get was how could they portray her as blind because she had the most beautiful eyes ever. I just felt they could have did something different with the video. I think I loved all his songs back then. Then again, I’m Commodores girl too!!
Love Wham! Great song for Anna and Carson’s jive! David and Maks also have great songs with their dances. Can’t wait for tonight!
I agree, Wham Rocks! I loved George Michaels music. Kool and the Gang, (not sure if Chaz can really Get Down On It) but I Love these flashbacks to the 80’s ….
I am on the edge of my seat for tonight, most excited to see what Anna and Carson have in store for us, as far as fashion… “permed hair” anyone! 🙂
@Sandy – I’m wondering if they will be donning bright-colored short shorts and crazy sweatshirts, a la the Wham! video ;-):
@Courtney – THAAANK YOU!!! That was incredible…
Boy, do I feel old. I won’t even mention that my hubby still has some “8-Tracks”…. LOL
Margaret, you sound like a broken record. You’ve already commented on how you think Tristan is boring. We get it. A lot of people agree with you and a lot disagree with you, including me. But there’s no need to keep harping on the same thing.
As someone else said though, I think it’s because he’s “dumbing down” his dancing and choreo to play to his partner’s strengths. Maybe if Tristan had been paired with someone else (Ricki or Chynna, perhaps) his choreo might excite you more. But what I find incredibly refreshing about him is that, even though he has a partner with less than stellar dance ability, he dances to her level to show her off. He doesn’t out-dance or over-dance his partner, like some others (*cough*Mark*cough*). The thing about these pro teachers is that they are doing what they can with the partner they’re given. Derek always does an excellent job getting the best out of his partners, and he always makes them look good. Clearly his style is different from Tristan’s. But that doesn’t make Tristan a bad choreographer. It just makes him different. And, I may be in the minority here, but seeing all the pros with their different styles makes the show better. It’d be awfully boring if they were all the same.
Just my 2c.
it’s definitely gonna be an interesting week. i am confident that j.r. and karina will do a FANTASTIC routine, just so long as the judges don’t screw them over with low, undeserved scores. i also think that ricki and derek willl do great tonight. i know it’s only week 5, but if they keep up the great work, i predict that j.r. and karina and ricki and derek will be in the finals.
And I’m now going to be singing “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” for the rest of the day 🙂 Hoping Carson can work this dance, it could be his most entertaining (shades of week one) if he keeps control.
I’m actually rather concerned about Ricki – mainly because Derek has gone silent and she’s not tweeting much either. They could just be busy, but I worry. 🙂
Magnolia:
Ok, I didn’t mean to sound like a broken record. Your right about a lot of the pros showcasing themselves and making themselves look good rather than their partner! But I don’t think Nancy is going to go much further, I mean I even like her more after watching her week after week now, she is not a grump as she appears to be on her talk show, she is a very intelligent woman, excellent lawyer!
Margaret, I didn’t think you sounded like a broken record. I respect your opinion being we all have a right to our opinions and favorite dancers even if we disagree. With that said, I’m not sure it’s fair to compare Tristan to Derek? Both are totally different dancers and we haven’t really seen enough of Tristan to tell if he’s as good as choreographer or not. I tend to think Tristan is a little green on choreography too compared to Derek. But, Derek is more experienced on this show than Tristan, so, he should be. Nancy might be more limited too than Ricki, so it’s hard to tell. Anyway, I like them both and look forward to Tristan budding on this show. Here’s to tonight. I’m so excited.
Vogue:
You’re an ace!
Thanks for that! I really hope Derek and Ricki blow the roof off once again, even though “Easy Lover” sounds like a real challenge for a foxtrot. I know the pressure is on to stay consistent, but they all seem to have their work cut out for them tonight.
Courtney, I could have gone without seeing the Wham! picture. Nostalgia is fun but fashion is cyclical. Eventually, that look – the eye-popping colors and the hotpants for men – will come back somehow. Maybe with global warming…
Derek tweeted that it’s going to be “interesting.” gulp
Sorry, y’all, I confess to being a bit cranky this morning. Margaret, didn’t mean to go off at you like that and I thank you for responding politely. 🙂
I actually agree with you about Nancy. I think her days are numbered, and to be honest, she isn’t one of the best dancers, though I’d love for her to hang around just to see the “Tristan and Nancy Comedy Hour.”
As to her talk-show persona, I’m not a huge fan, but I will say that if my kid was missing, I would want her squawking about it for sure! She is passionate, and that counts for a lot!
Vogue’s right. Tristan and Derek are quite different, and like I said, that’s what makes this show so great…seeing all the different styles and personalities. I happen to like both guys’ choreography in very different ways. I like to think that if Tristan had a younger partner, he might be a bit flashier. Hopefully, he’ll hang around for a while, and we’ll get to see some of that.
Is it time for the show yet? Let me check my armful of Swatch watches and see…
Yeah, Mary – that made me more worried that ever. Thanks Derek – I love it when you use phrases like “should be interesting”. NOT. 🙂
The dance order is so messed up this season. So hope can open the show twice already and JR still won’t EVER go in the beginning. Not fair at all! I hate the favoritism towards JR.
Magnolia, I agree….and time to bring this show on!! 😉
Heidi and Mary, yeah what is up with that “interesting” comment? Keeps my fingers crossed. I hope they blow us away like last week.
Hope and Maks going first…Not sure that’s good, but it is what it is. “this is Hopes’ week”? Hardly, if she’s dancing first in the forgettable spot. I will smile and keep a positive attitude. 🙂
@Matt – I happens every season. Whether its JR or Kirstie or whomever. And first spot is good too, they want the viewers to be tuned in. Thats how the show works. Its not JR’s fault its called ratings. 🙂
Actually, as Courtney and I have said many times, the first spot is every bit as good as going last. Both from a logical and statistical standpoint. Courtney has run stats on running order versus elimination. If I remember corrects, slots 2 and 3 were the bad spots from a statistics standpoint.
As for JR – he should be at the top of the hour – also a good spot. It’s actually Ricki who has never gone last or first, but she has always been in the second hour, which is better than the first hour, minus the first spot.
Actually going to Wiki to check – JR has gone last TWO out of four weeks. Not too shabby at ALL. Certainly not something to complain about.
Maks and Hope going first again? argh!
Heidi; Courtney:
What do they do toss a coin to see who is going in a certain order?
How do they figure? So I guess going in the second hour is not half bad at all, is it?
I am so with you Heidi! What does Derek mean interesting? That boy *sigh*. It makes me worried too, but maybe it has to do with the ’80s theme. He did post on twitter on the 12th that he had a good rehearsal with the lake. Guess will see what happens tonight, but staying positive. He was awfully quiet last week when they did the tango and look how well it turned out.
JR must be raking in huge voting numbers.
Derek will be on Entertainment Tonight this evening (per commercial on Dr. Phil’s show).
I’m guessing Derek is just being modest with his “interesting: comment, unless one of them is really hurt, but we would have heard about that by now, right????
Don’t we usually hear from Buttercup by now with an interesting backstage insider’s piece of info? She’s must quieter this year! 😉
Oops, make that MUCH quieter this year.
Just curious, what are the stats on getting a reasonable judges’ score when you go first? Don’t the judges sometimes hold back and low-ball the first couple a bit so they don’t end up with no room at the top if someone really nails it later in the running order?
And @DWTSGossip just came up with an interesting fact…
“Fun fact: out of 4 eliminated couples on #dwts 13: 2 have danced 4th that week while 2 have danced 1st. This week, Hope- 1st and J.R.- 4th”
Either TPTB are trying to break that trend bigtime, or … well I don’t want to think about the or.
First again?! That didn’t go so well last time for them. I thought they distributed those “honors” a little more evenly. They are really going to have to nail it because thus far going first hasn’t been the luckiest thing for anyone. I reeeaelly don’t want to be up late rage voting again.
Evaine, Yikes!!! That’s as bad as Derek tweeting “interesting” re their dance tonight. It’s gonna be a long day, people.
Hmmm…methinks a refresher post on the significance of running order could be in the cards in the near future…
…once again, for good measure, here’s the Cliff’s Notes version: going last, or the “pimp spot” is statisically the best position – I believe only 2 or 3 couples in the history of the show who danced last have been voted off the same week. It’s usually in TPTB’s best interests to put a popular couple there, as it gives viewers incentive to tune in till the end of the show. Going first is likely the next best position – maybe slightly less safe than going last, but you still get the attention of all the 8 pm viewers before they lose interest and change the channel. The 3rd best key position is top of the 2nd hour – that’s when viewership increases as the folks tuning in to other shows during the first hour change channels. Viewership is usually higher during the 2nd hour than the first, so all of the couples dancing in the 2nd half have a bit of an edge over those dancing in the first half. That leaves all the positions between 1st and whatever is top of the 2nd hour – usually 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & sometimes 5th, depending on how many couples are left and how much filler there is. 2nd is statistically the worst running order position – I think something like 15% of all the elims occured during a week where the eliminated couple danced 2nd. That’s probably when most people change the channel, especially if the first couple was either bad or boring. I believe 3rd & 4th were tied for 2nd worst position…don’t ask me the percentage. But yeah, for those of you bemoaning the fact that Hope is going first…you’re wasting your energy, as she actually has a bit of an advantage. I daresay that the pro dances could run a bit of interference, though, depending on where they’re placed – I think Chynna may have been disadvantaged a bit last week by the fact that there was a (kinda sucky) pro dance right before her, which could have turned some more casual viewers off to the point where they say “F*ck it, I’m watching Two & A Half Men instead!” But Chynna also sucked pretty bad last week, so maybe the pro dance didn’t have much of an effect on her anyway. I don’t know when the pro dances are this week, so there’s really no way of telling what effect it could have. But I’m inclined to think that Hope is sitting pretty at first position…and that JR is likely a-ok at 4th. I get the feeling there’s gonna be a good amount of filler tonight…
Cidra, I keep repeating to myself… “Self, it’s a glittery, shiny, dancing show. It’s a glittery, shiny, dancing show.” *LOL*
And as I said to Heidi earlier, I have more confidence in Derek’s “interesting” than Huey, Dewey and Louie’s scoring Hope in the first spot after their fiasco of generosity to Chynna last week.
“It’s just a sparkly, shiny, dancing show. A sparkly, shiny, dancing show.” 🙂
😛 Evaine. I’ll try that.
Cidra’s question at #160 bears examination. If the judges are hell-bent on “correcting” last week’s score fiasco, what are the chances they’ll be fair to the #1 spot? Courtney, your thoughts?
What DWTSGossip fails to mention is that the two couples who were eliminated during a week where they danced first (Ron & Chynna), also sucked bigtime during those weeks 🙂 Ron had the lowest score, and Chynna was tied for the 2nd lowest score…up against 3 celebs with arguably bigger fanbases. As for the 2 couples who went 4th and were eliminated the same week – Elisabetta likely had little to no fanbase, and Kristin had a fanbase that was really compatible with the main voting demographics of DWTS. And like I mentioned above – I have a feeling that there’s gonna be a good amount of filler in the first half of the show tonight, so 4th position very well may be top of the 2nd hour. Running order position alone is not a determining factor in who goes home – if someone is popular and dances well (i.e. Donny Osmond), it’s likely not going to matter if they’re dancing 4th or dancing 12th. When it does become an issue, though, is when someone has a questionable fanbase and/or is not dancing well.
*Kristin had a fanbase that WASN’T really compatible with the main voting demographics of DWTS. Fingers are faster than brain today, apparently.
@Cidra & Shep – I don’t know how going first affects scoring, because that’s a whole lotta numbers to run. That may be a project for winter hiatus 😛
If Hope’s tango is perfect I think she’ll do fine. It is still a “setting the bar” spot though so if there is anything out of sorts it might get scored low regardless to the degree the other dances might be out of sorts as well later on. They seem to get judging amnesia and start scoring higher again so by the end of it the scoring order doesn’t make much sense after you get past the top two scores. Last week things went off the rails in the first dance and they scored it highish and that set a weird bar and weird scores for everyone else. It’s still up for Hope to do well or not. I just have zero faith in the judges. Embrace the glitter. You know the drill. >:[]
Chances are looking good for Ricki and Derek to have the closing spot. David and Kym have already had it and I can’t see TPTB wanting to give it to Nancy and Tristan… I may be wrong though – God knows I often am! *LOL*
Yeah, I seem to remember that with all the filler last week, David & Kym danced at the bottom of the first hour – and they were 2nd. It really shouldn’t be a 2 hour show at this point… TPTB could easily. It it to 90 min, or maybe even just 1hour.
You really want to try to apply stats to crack addled judges?? 🙂 Yer funny. 🙂
That said, I think that scoring the first couple low only really holds on the first week or two of the competition. I don’t think it’s that big an impact later on – and you have to remember that sometimes, the person dancing first does a crappy job and deserves the score they get.
So, by my count, positions 3, 7 and 8 are open and we have Nancy, David and Ricki without spots yet. If they put Ricki in number 3, I may open a bottle of vodka now. 🙂 Or course, I don’t think they are going to leave David and Nancy in the two best slots on the show. I wager they put Nancy in the “turd” spot. Ricki has never gone last and David has, so….
Uh-oh! Carson -> Jive -> Dancing 2nd = worried…
Of course, there is the other alternative to consider – if Hope is first and chokes big time (unlikely), they will likely over score her as well. LIke they did Chynna.
Honestly, I think it’s to Hope’s advantage to dance 1st tonight. As people have said, it’s one of the more well-watched spots of the night – aside from going last or being right in the middle. It being tango, she should do fine and be safe tomorrow night. Unless she has a REALLY bad night (and we’re talking like falling on your ass bad), then she’ll be fine. The fanbase is big enough to save them IF scores are bad.
It looks like Ricki’s having the pimp spot. YEAH!!! I knew it’s going to be a great dance. You’re worried for nothing Heidi. 🙂
Yes, opening the show is promising. However, it’s the troupe that is opening the show. This means Hope is actually dancing 2nd, no? Tango is the easiest dance imo. Hope will do well enough.
Scratching my head over some of these song selection, but at least they should make for an “interesting” night of nostalgia and the cheesiest cheesecake imaginable. As for predictions:
Tangos: Can see each David and Hope doing well with the this danc for differing reasons, particularly Hope who once again has both good placement and song, not to mention the judges tend to be overly kind to/soft on one the week after they berate said one – and they’ve been about a point each too kind/soft with her most season IMO).
Rumbas – Doubt Rob will have the hip action for the Latin dances, which may be more prevalent in the faster ones. Meanwhile, suspect Nancy may show some nice quality of movement here and benefit from a slower dance where she can connect more with her partner.
Samba – Hopin and a bettin that JR lives up to expectactions. While cousin Cha-Cha was Chaz’s best dance, that’s not sayin much. Plus that was week one, four weeks of good faith & less body stress ago and an easier dance to boot.
Jive – This is either likely to be great or a hot mess. Entertaining either way though and I can totally see Carson rocking the pink headband.
Foxtrot – Probably my least favorite song-to-dance choice, but if anything will make this work, it’s Derek’s choreography combined with Ricki’s showmanship. At the same time, a Real Love foxtrot might not make quite the same impact as the Psycho Tango, so expect others to top them this week (likely JR and Hope).
“At the same time, a Real Love foxtrot might not make quite the same impact as the Psycho Tango, so expect others to top them this week (likely JR and Hope).”
Meant an Easy Lover Foxtrot above (though they might have been better off with Real Love).
I expect Derek to work with Harold to eliminate or at least soften the heavy drum beat in Easy Lover. That would make it much more danceable.
Is anyone else terrified of how badly the band may ruin our beloved 80’s songs???
Ricki’s Foxtrot is looking great is this rehearsal video:
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20537443,00.html
Cranscape, Don’t count on Hope’s tango being “perfect” (as in Score 30 perfect), but I think she’ll do just fine. She has the athletes’ advantage of knowing how to perform under pressure (even though she’s not in goal). Maybe it’s better she goes first before Len has a chance to get really cranky and CarrieAnn’s hormones kick in over Rob’s rumba 😉
May I suggest Evaine’s mantra? It worked for me.
“It’s just a sparkly, shiny, dancing show. A sparkly, shiny, dancing show.”
Lisa C, not me… none of this songs – except Conga – is beloved by me… ahahahah
This is way off topic, but Jennifer Grey tweeted earlier that she will be a guest judge on the British show(Strictly Come Dancing) in November.
She will be filling in for Len.
Courtney, Forget I ever asked anything about scores for couples dancing first. I don’t want you to lose your mind over the Winter on impossible analyses. 😛 Heidi’s right, I had a momentary lapse of sanity and forgot whose scores we were talking about. My bad.
Gitte:
did Jennifer just tweet that today? because she mentioned this on interviews when she was in new york recently.
Heidi who are you trying to kid??? You know you want to open that bottle of vodka now even if Derek and Ricki aren’t in the turd position. It will make some of the hot messes and the 80s costumes even more fun to watch! 😉
Very true, Meggie. Very true. 🙂 Luckily all I have in my house is wine. 🙂
Margaret: She tweeted it about two hours ago.
Come on JR with yo’ bad self. You R better than the Pros! Yeah I mean U Derek and Maks. DWTS dancing just consists of turning around in circles, booty shaking and jumping up in the air. JR should win because the middle-aged most likely overweight caucasian female(DWTS’ largest demographic) doesn’t have a problem with men of color winning…only the women. Remember Mya, Laila, Mel B, Monique Coleman, & poor Brandy, they hated Maks groping & kissing on her so much ABC fixed the phones so many of her votes went to Bristol then said she had no fan base voting for her. I’m glad no women of color were on the show to be humiliated this season.
Dear lord…seriously Staceyk…this board FINALLY started to calm down. Now you’ve just opened up a can of worms! Why I’ll be avoiding this site for the next few hours…
1. The back and forth that will now ensue.
2. This turning into a Derek v. Maks thing.
3. Ringers discussion opened up ALL over again.
I can’t take it when mommy and daddy fight.
PS. are you related to Zach 2.0?
Sidenote – I’m a Maks fan and just want to say that.
Derek just tweeted this:
“It’s official , I look absolutely ridiculous today . Ridiculous !!Damn you 80s for having such a silly sense of style .. Ha ha .”
I can’t wait to see their outfits 😀
Really, Toni? My only thought was whether to delete her post as trolling or to let it stand ignored as….well, silly. I didn’t see anything about your three points in her post – not sure where you got that from that ramble. That post is all about how DWTS doesn’t like black women. Or something.
If no one responds it will just go away. Too much to be excited about tonight to get baited. Glitter, guys. GLITTER.
Hope and Carson are tweeting each other about Maks. Run off at look. Hope bought Carson his cool Nike shoes he’s was filmed in last week. There is a weird triangle going on there. Weird and awesome. 🙂 Hopefully this won’t be the last week for either of them.
Oooo….maybe there’s spandex involved. Hehehehe….if he’s feeling ridiculous, then it should really be interesting. He usually has such classic taste in clothing on this show.
That was my first thought too Heidi. 😀
I’m thinking this week will even beat Rock Week from season 11 when it comes to ridiculous outfits.
Remember Brandi’s half pants/half skirt outfit???
@staceyk – Just STFU.
And cranscape, I too love this crazy little love triangle….er, maybe “infatuation trapezoid” (can’t forget about Storm the swordfighting instructor!). It’s bizarre and funky and screams “odd couple”. 🙂
And I’m liking this whole “glitter” mantra I’m seeing you repeat 😀 I think I might take it a step further though…
“When the trolling gets tough – just sparkle harder.”
LOL – Courtney you’ve been waiting to whip out the “STFU” all weekend. Good job, perfect timing. 🙂
I saw the Carson/Hope tweets too and it was cracking me up.
Now I have my fingers crossed for spandex and Billy Idol spiked hair on Derek.
If Hope bought Carson shoes and Carson bought Anna shoes (which he did) does that mean that Anna should buy Maks shoes next?
Hopefully, cause I know her taste would be VERY different from his usual choices (pretty much targeted to look cool to 13 year olds).
Now I feel silly. I guess I fell for it. I was just worried since the last couple of trolls (or the same troll posing as multiple people) ended up creating a stir and it somehow turned into a battle over those 3 topics.
No worries…taking you guys advice and will ignore 🙂
Can’t wait for tonight! Bring on the 80’s!
and the glitter!
I’m sorry….but Derek cursing at an entire decade….suddenly, I’m not so worried about their dance. I can’t stop laughing at him.
No worries, Toni 🙂 Just sparkle harder!
It’s hard to be mad at the world when you know that Carson Kressley is dancing to Wham! 😀 And I honestly think he’ll probably be fine dancing in the crap spot…unless the judges decide to get REALLY nasty, and I wouldn’t put it past them. If I had to guess, I’m thinking it could be TPTB trying to give him a bit of a handicap. I’m sure they’ve noticed how popular he is…maybe they’ve decided that he doesn’t need any outside help to pull in the votes. Or maybe they’re starting to pimp their “dream finale” of Hope, JR, & Ricki…and anyone that is not one of those 3 is on their own now, no more little assists from TPTB…*stares down David* 😯
*pirouettes through the blog flinging glitter and sparkle*
No trolls here! They shall be banished!!!
Wheeeeee!!!
Maks’ latest shoes – he does love the red!
Re: Maks’ shoes: I don’t think Anna picked those out! LOL
“Just STFU” and “When the trolling gets tough – just sparkle harder.”
Oh, I think my day is now complete until the show starts!
#Heidi – Derek cursing at an entire decade ….that made my day!!! first Derek and then you!!! ROTFL …and i am sorry too….no way that man will ever look ridiculous!!! spandex, spiked hair or sequins…he can rock everything! bring it on, baby!!!!
I’ve been “Under Pressure” (Bowie/Queen) all day long reading these posts. Wishing “I Could Turn Back Time” to when I had no idea what the pimp position was ,that dance order mattered & that the TPTB were evil. Actually took me a while to figure what that stood for. I feel a “Breakdown Dead Ahead” but hope tonight I will be “Lovin’ Every Minute of It”. But do feel I might be in the “Danger Zone”. Need more glitter. And let me say PureDWTS is “Simply Irresistable”
Bwahahaha….check Derek’s twitter for a picture. I think he’s traumatized by his costume. Now he’s tweeting “God help me.” He says this is a hint of what he’s wearing: http://www.mobypicture.com/user/derekhough/view/10984816
“Oooo….maybe there’s spandex involved. Hehehehe….if he’s feeling ridiculous, then it should really be interesting.”
The true litmus test is whether MARK thinks it’s ridiculous. lol
p.s. I’m not a particular Mark fan, but somehow feel like we were gipped out of the outlandishness he would’ve come up with these past couple theme weeks (not to mention seeing Kristen perhaps fulfill her potential as a dancer).
Mark wore short, red nylon shorts and a head band – there is nothing too ridiculous for him.
Hilarious Heidi! This night is going to be a blast for costumes alone.
Did anyone see dr. phil today. he had the dwts cast (minus Hope and Maks, Kristin, Elisabetta, Chazz, J.R. AND KARINA, Ricki and Derek) and Rob got the biggest applause out of all the contestants. me thinks he gained some fans damn we might be stuck w him longer than expected.
Lastly, seeing carson’s song i think we’re gonna see some bright colored shorts and t shirts just saying lol. Great song though.
Carson is in the crap spot, really? Dancing to WHAM? That’s TV gold. Ok so i’m tuning in extremly late I realize but…heck I have things to do. 🙂 Unfortanantly I won’t be tuning in tonight. Im going on a quiet rousing trip to the hospital. Joy. Well that and I want my Chynna back. 🙂 Im sure it will be a good show atleast from the cheese standpoint. Heck you know it will if Heidi’s going for the booze more than TWO hours before the show starts. Well potentialy but I think she should…Her comments make Zacky ROFL after she has had a drink or two. 😉
I mentioned in an earlier thread, that I didn’t think the Broadway theme would be used this season because they used it on SCD last week.
Well, I take that back. Just to be clear: I don’t know if they will use the Broadway theme on DWTS, but I’m now sure that BBC don’t care about repeating the same things on the two shows.
I didn’t see the SCD result show myself, but I’ve been told that not only did Susan Boyle sing Unchained Melody but Julianne and Kenny also performed the Footloose medley.
Mark didn’t just wear shorts, he wore SHORT shorts. They were so short and so tight that they would’ve made Richard Simmons blush, but I digress..
And that little snippet of Derek’s costume looks like a Bill Cosby sweater (but hey, The Cosby Show was big in the 80s, so…).
ROTFL, Courtney!!!!!!! :-P. I’m going to make “When the trolling gets tough – sparkle harder!” my email signature!!!!! 😉 …. You don’t have that copyrighted, do you?
The thing I’m looking forward to tonight is hopefully seeing some bad costumes! And to answer a couple music questions – as Heidi said, they dance to a CD track all week and don’t hear the band version until Monday. They can ask the band to tweak it (speed, etc) if it’s not working for them, but it’s often a big change either way. And yes they can sometimes switch songs if they really don’t like what they have, but I think that’s the wimpy way out.
YAY! My two favorite couples are going 1st and 2nd…now I can flip over and watch Monday Night Football while I’m voting.. Life is good. It’s only a “glittery shiny dancing show” Very wise words, Evaine. 🙂
Buttercup, there you are! Thanks for the music info! But haven’t you already seen the bad costumes in dress rehearsal? Or maybe you’re just clarifying that they are indeed bad! 🙂
This just in! George Clooney just told Extra that you should never mix wine and vodka. Bad move! So, Heidi, aren’t you glad you’re out of vodka now????
OMG, How could we have forgotten “The Bangles”…. LOL
Did Hope roll her eyes at Len? I dont know, her expressions may just get them in trouble. Len was not happy with their performance. Maks just drug her around… (Sorry Maksfans). I was hoping better for them. But midway through this competition I just dont see it.
“Mark wore short, red nylon shorts and a head band – there is nothing too ridiculous for him.”
And it wasn’t 80s week, just normal everyday wear for him.
OMG – those judges are behaving like kids.
YAY – we WILL have the Broadway theme next week
@Sandy — Haha! Yes, Hope did roll her eyes. That is waaaay toned down from what she is capable of though. I’ve been waiting for her to explode and it hasn’t happened yet. You’ll know when she does as there’d be a little soot stain where Len used to sit. 🙂 Her death glare is legendary. Hasn’t appeared yet.
Loved Carson, but very bad dancing. 🙁 I also think Nancy & Tristan are so fun, and Nancy did much better this week (although no one will ever accuse her of being a dancer!). Really fun show (except for Hope & Maks, who I just didn’t enjoy).
Weird that Carson was second and Nancy was third. Now, I guess they’re putting JR on 4th. Very odd.
Did a heat wave just hit? Oh wait nevermind it was just Tristan
Want a pick of Tom from the 80s
JR was on FIRE!! Wow those hips were blazing… Incredible.
ARGH….more of Ricki’s wine with Derek’s cheese LOL.
What was CAI smoking? I’m no Nancy fan but it was her dance yet.
I wanted to see an 8 for Chaz. Loved him.
And DAVID! OMG, I almost died laughing before and after his dance. And the performance was also really good.
JR was very good as per usual.
Ricki coming up.
This would be where I say “I told you so”. 🙂
Hope was ridiculously overscored, but they wanted this to be her week- but that was a crap Tango. Ricki underscored, and Derek mentioned it not being a good foxtrot song. Chaz underscored. I would say JR was about the only one on target.
No way did Hope deserve the same score as Ricki and No way did Rob and Jr both get 9’s from CAI.
I would agree Chaz was underscored and Hope a bit overscored but not really that Ricki was underscored. For me it was a good but average performance from her. The scoring was much better then last week IMO.
Oh, and CA has the hots for Rob, no denying that. I think he did good but not 9 good. 24 as Ricki is where I would put him.
But like I said, Sasa – they got the shitty song, like it or not. Hope was overscored by a good 3 points, and Rob did NOT deserve a 9 from anyone. Ridiculous.
I think Carrie Ann wants to be a Kardashian intimate… invited to all the parties and such. *sigh*
Well I am still trying to recover from Tristan & his hips lol omg!
That guy is like not real, is her, seriously no one can be that hot! WOW
Thought Nancy did good as can be, Rob getting a 9 for that Rumba was a total joke, CA gave him the same score she gave JR? screw you CA you majorly suck!
I really think Chaz needs to go but think it will be Nancy for some reason, Hope was awful, that was a bad Tango.
I would not be sad to see her go but she won’t of course & Carson & Chaz have bigger fanbases than Nancy I think so I see this being her week to go even though she got her best score.
Maybe then Tristan can hang with his family more while they are here anyway.
So p_ _ _ _ _d about these scores tonight, WHAT are they really trying to do? Can’t say I am surprised tho…there is a history of this. It is like they can’t consistently give Derek good scores because he is that good. No they did not deserve a 10 tonight but these scores for what they did for that crappy song..Ridiculous. And compared to the rest except JR, even MORE Ridiculous. There are at least 1000 other 80’s songs where you could actually have the rhythm match your required dance. Were they given that ? NO. In fact quite a few of the songs were crap.
Something tells me Hope or Carson will be leaving. I think the judges were comparing Chazs samba to JRs. I didn’t think Chaz did anything all that stellar but it doesn’t help that Lacey is the most limited in terms of choreography out of all the pros. Rob gets what he always gets a wee bit too much love from CAI. Nancy was underscored. Everyone else I believe was appropiately scored.
Sorry,,,meant to say NOT surprised…the smoke coming from my ears obstructed my vision for a moment ! HA!
It’s too obvious that the judges want Carson to go. The whole package was a setup. I know his jive was not good. I don’t care. He’s still better – on entertainment value alone – than some others. Dangit, I want to see him rumba!
It’s going to come down to those crazy fanbases again. 🙂 And dammit, I don’t know who’s got the voters!
Well, I did predict most of that – as I will continue to toot my own horn. 🙂 Shame Hope didn’t pull it off – she had the best set of circumstances of everyone and got the same score as Ricki. Just imagine what she could have gotten if she pulled off the dance better.
Hope’s Tango was disappointing, she just didn’t reflect the mood with her movement at all. I guess she really is used to moving on her own terms as opposed to having a partner.
Carson was also a bit disappointing. I knew he would probably struggle with the Jive but he actually struggled more then I anticipated.
Nancy had glimmers of progress and I felt she enjoyed herself more then before but it’s still so timid at times. She had much better hips in the rehearsal videos, they just disappeared when she performed.
I think she may be ok for another week but I’m not so sure about Carson or Hope.
Thinking either Carson or Nancy will go tomorrow night..which is a pity since I love Anna and Carson and Tristan is so cute. I think that will be the bottom 2 and Ricki will land there for pure shock value.
But hey! JR’s samba more than met my expectations! WOW just WOW!!!! Can’t wait to watch it again! 😀
Heidi called it exactly right before the show: a perfect set up for Hope to improve her marks, a crummy song to choreograph to for Ricki and Derek, so they could fall down the leader board and JR could take over the lead.
Nancy did okay; Carson I’m worried for. Chaz did better. I really haven’t seen Hope improve much since the beginning. David has been improving though.
Ugh is DialIdol accurate? It has Chaz 2nd & Hope 1st? WTF
Also I remember was there a not a week where DI has David & Kym #1 & they actually were bottom 2 that week? so they are not too good at predicting I guess, that was a totally inaccurate week for them.
:::sigh::: this is yet another pet peeve of mine. NO DIAL IDOL IS NOT ACCURATE. Hell, read what they say about the rankings – they rarely call it for anyone!!
Well, that was a mixed bag. I’ll need to see it again to really get a good feel for things. First impressions: Loved, JR and Karina’s performance. So happy for them! Was sorry Carson didn’t manage better (it’s obvious the judges really want him gone). Ricki and Derek gave it the good ol’ college try with tough material, but they’ll be back on form next week. I was disappointed that Hope and Maks didn’t take advantage of the red carpet the show laid out for them. I actually enjoyed David and Kym’s performance a lot. He’s finally settling down; but I wonder if he’s getting any votes. Nancy can’t seem to relax enough on show night to bring her personality to the performance (but wow, Tristan was absolutely delicious); Rob wasn’t as bad as I expected; but Chaz was. He’s a nice guy, but he’s a bad dancer and not as entertaining as Carson. So he’s my choice for who *should* go Tuesday.
Hope and Maks looked like they were trying not to trip on there props. At one point I think he stopped and guided her around the jacket. Wish it went smoother for them.
[…] Princess Heidi already posted pretty much all the songs on her previous post, but in case you missed it here’s the list of 80′s music used on tonight’s […]
