Maksim Chmerkovskiy Planning To Return To Dancing With The Stars Next Season
According to a new interview with Maks at People.com, he is planning on returning next season for another shot at the mirror ball. Despite some rough edges last season, Maks says he loves the show and what it stands for. Below is a take where Maks voices that there are things he’s not extremely proud of, but, his imperfections and the “not-so-good” moments have made him who he is today.
“There were some things that I’m not extremely proud of, but I think that the imperfections and not-so-good moments are exactly what made me who I am,” he says.
It’ll be impossible to forget those moments since past competitions will begin airing on GSN (Game Show Network). The cable network will air seasons 4 through 14 beginning Jan. 21 on Saturdays at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.
“There were some ups and downs, but every season had something interesting in it, whether it was the dynamic of a partnership or me speaking back to the judges,” says Chmerkovskiy.

So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to another season with Maks if the powers that be hire him for another season? I hope Maks will be back and I’m still a fan of his dancing, but, I hope he’s truly learned some lessons from last season and he will rise above from here on out in being an example to those who look up to him. I also hope they pair him with a person who isn’t so much of a match to his personality like last season. I’m not making excuses, but, that had to be hard to deal with for both parties.
Heidi’s Comment: Well, he should have learned by now, one would think. But, that said, I do appreciate that he recognizes that he has had some not good moments on the show. I didn’t get the feeling that he thought he had done anything that people could criticize last season. To acknowledge that is a sign of some growth, anyway. As for coming back to the show – HE wants to, but that doesn’t mean it will happen. I personally think he could use a bit of a break. One season wouldn’t kill him. Or his fans. I’m living proof. 🙂
Yes yes and yes! Hope the story is true!
Yes, yes, yes…another season with Maks, please. Love his dancing and choreo. He brings excitement and passion to the show..some good, some bad. But always Maks.
Heidi, I guess you were referring to the fact that Derek took a season off and you survived (living proof) LOL
Would love to see Maks, Derek, Mark, Tristan and Val back next season. Not that you asked.
Aaaaand cue the rumors that Maks will “definitely be back” 🙂 Interviews like this always frustrate me a bit, because some fans seem to misinterpret “I’m planning on coming back” or “I want to come back” with “I’m definitely coming back, it’s already been confirmed”. So just for good measure, I reiterate: none of the pros will know for sure whether they’re coming back or not until about a week before the cast announcement. So please, guys – when pro watch goes live in a little over a month, no bugging us with “you need to update your post, Maks will definitely be back”. I will simply point you back to this post 🙂
At least Maks is admitting he may have been in the wrong on a few things last season. I tend to be more forgiving of those individuals mature & secure enough to admit when they’re wrong, rather than the ones that won’t even acknowledge any sort of fault on their part. Dated too many of those types…
I agree Courtney. Last season Chelsie said she’s comming back and then she didn’t .
I have a feeling Maks will be back.
Knowing ABC they probably gave him a big incentive to return. I knew ever since he did what he did he’d be a shoe in for season as long as he wanted it. It sparks interest and ABC received a lot of press from it.
Personally I wouldn’t mind if they dropped a lot of the pros. I’m tried of out cries from hardcore fan boys/girls that their fav didn’t get someone good and so and so did. Atleast with new pros there would a level playing field. As I’ve said elsewhere sometimes the hardcore fans ruin the show rather than the show itself. Anyways the show is Dancing with the Stars not Dancing with the Pros + Stars. I know we’ve had years of watching them grow into celebrities and some into our hearts but I don’t think its necessarily be a bad idea.
I think Maks could benefit enormously from a season off. His behavior is tiring to watch and quite painful, the fact that at those moments he finds it acceptable, is sad. Sure, he can talk about those not-so-good moments now, but Maks will be exactly the same as he has always been. And more than likely without every acquiring that MBT…
Okay, I sat out last season but was told something about Maks acting out again. How bad was it? Dare I ask?
Nathan, please don’t ask. LOL
@Nathan – Errr…I’m honestly kind of reluctant to rehash it, lest it reignite a fan war that raged for a good part of the season and has only recently died down. The comments section of this post tell some of the story. his appearance on GMA is also pretty telling.Long story short – Maks and Hope had a volatile partnership, that was often marred by arguments during practice, Maks handling Hope roughly, somewhat rude critiques from the judges, and Maks lashing out at the judges/Derek/Hope/etc. Maks seemed to revert back to the Maks of season 10, when he was just so angry and frustrated with the whole show. It got so bad that when Hope & Maks were eliminated in week 9, they were not allowed to do the typical post-show press (Kimmel, the press line, etc.) by the producers, lest they cause an even bigger stir. I think that sums it up pretty well.
I hope Maks doesn’t take next season off (i.e., is asked to return but does not), because I think then he won’t ever be back on the show. For that reason in particular, I think DWTS will make sure to ask him back for this next season.
Great summary, Court. Nathan, you know what a big Maks fan I am and I was really upset with him (and still am a little). The “shove” he gave Hope during one of the rehearsals is especially hard to forget. I just hope we never see that side of him again.
Thanks for the links, Courtney! My jaw has dropped several times just in those links you’ve gave me and I’m soooo glad I sat out. WOW! Okay, I won’t rehash anything….
Idk I simultaneously think he needs to sit a season out but a part of me is saying that he needs to compete too. As much as I hate to say it, the show needs him for creating buzz and just publicity in general. Saying that, having him come back for another season (if he is asked) would a doubleedged sword since you don’t know what Maks you are going to get.
I ahve a feeling he’ll be back soo. I know he admitted he did some things wrong, but i just he needs to sit out a season. Regain his composer ya know?
In the end, the producers loved the drama Maks provided. Maks loves the attention DWTS provides. Whether Maks is on Season 14 will just have to be seen, but if a celeb says “I want Maks” or similar, then he likely will be on.
Yeah, that’s what I was referring to Rebecca. Frankly, I think Derek came back better than ever – more mature, grown up, BIGGER (thank you, Derek’s trainer). He just seemed more calm and focused – and he said that people around the set noticed it too. He did say it was good to watch the show from the outside for a bit.
They gave him a big incentive LAST season, ohlala and look how that turned out. No, I don’t think anything is set yet – yeah, Maks is Maks, but last season was, I think, the first time someone was banned from post elimination media. That says ALOT. If TPTB were THAT cool with all his antics, that wouldn’t have happened. Period. We’ll have to wait and see if it was the Hope/Maks pairing that was toxic or if there was a line crossed that was too far.
Personally, I think this article is Maks’ PR way of saying, “Sorry, I do want to come back.”. Before last season, he was making lots of noise about NOT coming back and suddenly Hope and Val happened. I don’t think he has the same pull this time around. Tristan and Derek showed that you can get buzz and fans without being a complete ass.
While I appreciate his sentiment now, I agree with others that that’s fine NOW, but he wasn’t appologetic at the time. He and Hope pretty much destroyed the end of the season for me – and “fan boys/girls” were secondary.
I have to ask – what female celeb would ask for Maks after that thing with Hope unless they are already friends? I can’t imagine.
And I’ll reiterate – if the producers loved that kind of drama that much, they wouldn’t have banned him from post elimination media. And that’s not me guessing at what happened – that’s what Maks and Hope both said on their twitters.
If I was a female celeb I would not hesitate to ask for Maks. You do your homework and you know what you are getting going in. Very strong, controlling teacher who demands respect. And don’t talk to him or ask questions while he is teaching. LOL.He seems to be a very reactive personality. Give him good vibes and you would probably get the same back.
Seriously the man has had a lot of students and continues to teach. So he must be doing something right.
He and Hope were toxic and volatile together. I don’t think it helped that the judges kept commenting on rehearsal packages but then they always do. I thought their job was to judge the dance but I forget it is a reality show looking for fireworks. And TPTB really liked the Maks/Hope drama or they would not have dumped it on us week after week. Maybe if Mark had stayed longer he could have brought some drama as he to has in the past.
Anyway I have a lot of thoughts on the subject but I am ready to move on to Season 14 but Please ladies, drink some wine….I really need that Cheesecake!
I want to see Maks back because he is a character, and you never know what to expect from him. One season he makes me dread the part in the show where we watch him and his partner rehearse and dance. The next season I enjoy watching him be cocky(only when it’s with someone like Kirstie, who has a comeback for pretty much everything). If Maks sidnt come back next season, I’d be ok, but I d never know what Im missing.
