DWTS2012 Gavin DeGraw Preparing To Dance Emotionally And Intimately (Rehearsal Video)
ET has a fun hew rehearsal video up today with Gavin and Karina! The two are getting ready to show a whole other side of Gavin for story night on Dancing With The Stars on Monday. He’s out of his comfort zone, but it’s going to be very emotional. Both are looking very intimate in their dancing as well. Nice! Check them out….
Thanks 🙂 I saw Gavin sing on Jay Leno—he didn’t sit at the piano; he was trying to “groove” a little while singing. It was cute. You could tell he was trying to incorporate rhythm to his stage presence. I actually enjoy watching him, Maria, and Donald since they all are totally outside of their comfort zone.
I have mixed feelings about this guy. Now I’m thinking he comes off jerky by times because he’s so utterly out of his comfort zone. He articulated the achilles heel of dancing very well here – you must convey the emotion and character and literally conform to someone else’s body. This will be a big triumph for him if he can pull it off. IMO. And Pepe Le Pew? Classic!
I understand his problems with being so close to another person and perform! I’m one of those who feel uncomfortable by a simple hello hug 😛 and I guess that’s why I always have been into team dances instead of those styles you has to do as a couple. Hope he finds a way to get over the worst of it, cause I like him on the show! 🙂
@Lilly:
You bring up a very good and valid point re: personal space and performing ballroom.
I remember on Maks’ website, someone (a novice who had never tried ballroom before) asked “what is the hardest dance to learn?”. Maks’ reply was “Anyone can learn each of thee dances. The question that is the hardest to answer is are you comfortable pulling a woman close to you and remaining in that hold for several minutes, even if you don’t know them?”.
I thought after reading it, yup that makes sense because the partners move each other into position and if you have personal space issues to conquer then it is going to get complicated.
It’s not for everyone!
I’m glad this was posted. I know it may appear that Gavin isn’t trying (and I certainly don’t know the guy), but I think he’s just out of his element. He doesn’t do big choreographed concerts; he sits behind a piano at his shows. I also think he’s exhausted from touring simultaneously. He’s had to cancel a couple recent shows per dr. orders, and his music fans are up in arms because they think he’s abandoning them in favor of DWTS…so the man really can’t win. I don’t think it was smart to sign on to DWTS mid-tour, but I think he’s doing the best he can given all the commitments he’s made.
After seeing him on Leno, I believe it definitely is doctor’s orders because he was straining his voice. What was interesting was that Jay didn’t talk to him about dwts.
@Sheery:
Yes he was a bit strained, noticed he changed it up, higher ranges he went low – still worked and loved the performance – but I believe it is doctors orders as well.
@Marie
No he can’t really win one way or another can he? Have been seeing the same thing – fans upset (I get that they are too); including at the announcement of cast and shortly thereafter many of his M&G’s were cancelled and they really began to go off on DWTS vs Concerts. They are beginning to ease up on him IMO many are not DWTS followers/fans, finding their way into the voting process and getting excited to see him perform – they’ll take him any way they can get him 🙂
I get the impression he really had no idea just how much would be involved; the physicality and strain it would actually be. As we all know hard to do 2 things at once when doing this show.
@Jay
I agree – if he can find a way to get comfortable in this dance, in particular, it will be pretty big in terms of personal growth and that “comfort zone” for him (and don’t we all have em). What I appreciate the most about his “journey” is his willingness to give it a go, do the best he can with what he has ability or not. His and a few others, Martina for instance (for this season) is one of the attractions of DWTS (for me anyways). Seeing someone step so far out of who or what they are/do – and learn, bringing it to the dance floor.
I did notice in this particular video, a more relaxed G&K, maybe she has figured out a way to draw him into this zone and he is learning to walk into it – even if with baby steps. I am very curious on what the story line will be, especially for Gavin, watch his face as he mentions earlier interview with DWTS for Story week – a look we haven’t seen before – very opposite of how he is usually seen in concert, in interviews prior to and including during DWTS. I wish him and all the very best. This is a very revealing week, pivotal week as far as dancers and connection with fans.
This is a great interview with Gavin and Karina. Their dance relationship seems to be developing slowly. I like their honesty and humor. Agree with Cj that Gavin had no idea just how much he’d signed up for with DWTS, bless him. He seems to be a very interesting, intelligent, introspective yet funny guy. The Pepe le Pew reference was hysterical! Hope he can push through his discomfort and give a good performance on Monday.
I gotta see if youtube has some Pepe cartoons to watch. I can barely remember that character.
Love Gavin here! I didn’t really know much about him before this season. He and Karina are great together. He’s so honest about it all. Hope he really improves and feels good about himself for doing DWTS!
@Lizzbeth: if you find any let us know — I remember Pepe and damn near peed my pants on Gavin’s reference to it as how he saw himself — you’d never know it to see him when he performs on stage!
Please don’t let anyone see “Pepe” in place of Gavin while dancing the Rumba! 😉
@Meggie: I agree!
I didn’t remember Pepe either til he did the kissing-up-the-arm thing–very cute!
I remember watching Pepe Le Pew along with all the other great cartoons back in the day… Waaaaayyyy back in the day… 🙂
On Youtube, user2901 has cute Pepe le Pew vids like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuWZdzNzji0
