Dancing with the Stars Season 14, Week 2 – Ratings Watch

Another week, another post on the on-going ratings saga.  As I predicted last week, DWTS is sticking to the pattern and is down slightly from the premiere – but it’s still the number two show for the week in total viewers, and number 9 in the key demographic.  I got all my Nielsen information from Zap2It, as usual.

If you click that link you will see that while DWTS gets beat in the key demo by the Voice, American Idol and a few others, part of the reason for it falling from number 6 to number 9 (3.5 to 3.2) is two very large basketball games.  It definitely holds its own.  The key demo is the 18-49 year olds which advertisers covet.  The higher you are in the key demo, the more money you can earn for commercial time during your show.  Hence – the continued appearance of Disney kids and beefcake in the DWTS cast each season. 🙂   Anyway, DWTS had a 3.2 share in the key demo this week versus a 5.3 for AI and a 4.5 for the Voice.  The sky still isn’t falling as that difference between AI and DWTS equates to roughly 2.7 million viewers.  Sounds like a lot…but when the total viewers number is over 17 million? Not so much.  Yeah, yeah, yeah…the advertisers look at the key demo as being more important. Whatever. The point of these posts are to provide context to those who just say “DWTS ratings are down” while neglecting to mention that TV is down as a whole AND to show that while the ratings are down, DWTS ain’t going nowhere anytime soon.  Not when they are ranked number 2 over all and number 9 in the demo.

Take a gander at the Top 25 shows on Television, Week ending April 1 (corresponding to DWTS Week 2):

AI is nipping at DWTS heels, but the real surprise is the Voice falling rather precipitously from 16 million viewers before DWTS started to not quite 12 million viewers now. I have a feeling they may tinker a bit with the battle rounds next time around.  Anyway, next week will be the real test when the Voice moves to live shows where people can vote.  Interestingly, the DWTS results show is ranking rather high right now.  The total viewers at 15.6 may be a similar number to the old “normal”, which means it’s holding viewership better than the performance show is. Weird. I’ll have to write on that next week and see if that’s true or not.

Lastly, my little graph showing DWTS ratings this season compared to seasons past.  Not to much to say about that….without looking at the chart above, it lacks context by itself. 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Katherine Jenkins Talks Of Her Expectations For Dancing With The Stars, Tonight’s Dance, And More

In a new TV Guide interview with Katherine Jenkins, she tells them she never thought she’d be doing this well on Dancing With The Stars. She talks of her dance experience, her expectations for the show, and says tonight’s dance has been more challenging for her. More below….

Everyone, understandably, is pegging you as the favorite now. Do you feel like you are or are you ignoring all the chatter?
Jenkins: It’s lovely to hear, but I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to be called that. I’m taking it week by week, and anything can happen to any of us. You’re only as good as the week you’re working on. I don’t want any of the extra pressure because this is a fun experience and something I want to keep enjoying. I don’t want any of the expectations put on us.

Did you have any expectations yourself when you started?
Jenkins: I had absolutely no clue how I was gonna do. In my day job, I stand in one place and sing with an orchestra behind me. It doesn’t really require any movement! Yes, when I was young, I took a few tap-dancing classes, but they weren’t training classes. I stopped all that once I realized I wanted to do classical singing. I’ve never thought about dancing and now that I’m doing it, I’m loving it!

Since it’s Rock Week, what are your favorite rock songs and bands?
Jenkins: Well, if I told you some of that, it would give it away what our song is! [Laughs] To be honest, that’s not really the music I listen to, hence why it’s gonna be more of a challenge for me, but I’m really excited by our song, so you’ll just have to wait and see.

PureDWTS POLL: Can Voters Move On From Jaleel White’s Abuse Accusations & Blow Up With Kym Johnson?

Good Morning America went into the rehearsals of Kym Johnson and Jaleel White. Cameron Mathison questioned Jaleel straight up on the abuse accusations from his ex girlfriend and his relationship and the blow up with Kym Johnson as they ready for their Tango tonight. “Is their smoke where there is fire?”, asks Cameron. Jaleel says yes and no. He blames the internet for exploiting everything. He won’t answers questions on his ex-girlfriend, but, he says everything is fine with Kym and she supports him. They shower her with cupcakes, etc.. More in detail below….

Dance Junkies TV Dancing With The Stars Pre-Party With Anna Trebunskaya (Video)
