Roshon Fegan Says Dancing With The Stars Partner Chelsie Hightower Is A Wild One
Roshon tells The Huffington Post that he and Chelsie rehearse for 6+ hours a day. Sometimes with all the promos they have to do, costume fittings, etc, they go until Midnight. He’s loving his journey and even when it’s all over, he’s going to still continue dancing. Below is more from Roshon including some fun mentions on Chelsie.
“You go to wardrobe and then it’s back to rehearsals,” he said. “Sometimes they want to over-bedazzle stuff, so I have to make sure I keep the bedazzling at a minimum.”
Roshon also said he has to keep his eye on his partner, Chelsie Hightower — for his own safety.
“She’s got serious elbow, she’s a wild one. She likes to jump on me without any warning. She puts a lot of passion into it, but I’ve got to watch those elbows,” Fegan laughs, before confessing that neither he nor Hightower get any choice when it comes to their performance music.
“They actually pick the music for us each week, so that’s another challenge people don’t really know about. If it’s a whack song or a lousy song, we have to make some magic out of nothing. I’ve been really lucky to get a lot of great songs. I haven’t had one I didn’t really like at all.”
Before the “Shake It Up” star rushes back to rehearsals, he said, “When this is over, I’m still going to be dancing.”

Guess Chelsie doesn’t have the same pull as some other pros who ask for certain songs, or to have their songs & dances changed lmao!!!
Or maybe she just doesn’t want to, sheery. Who knows? I know Derek has changed songs twice this season. Does he have pull?? Maybe so. Chelsie has sat out a season, so maybe she’s afraid to rock the boat.
Heidi, I think she’s afraid to ‘rock the boat’ like you said. Too bad since Roshon is her first ringer and getting Bad Romance – the classical for argentine tango? That was the least exciting argentine tango song this season, if not ever.
I think I’m waiting forever for Derek to pull a ‘Julianne’ and go to bigger things. I seriously think he’s ‘too good’ for this show. Does he have new projects coming up. When is Cobu is going to show?
Cobu JUST wrapped sound/music editing like a week ago, Fatna…which is why I wonder if Derek will be on next season. I guess it all depends on when they set the release date. Both Derek and the director said there were announcements coming “soon”. He can’t really pull a Julianne, since he’s been on the show nearly twice as many seasons as she was…but I know what you mean. I feel like it’s only a matter of time. I don’t know how he’s looking at it though – it might take something really good to get him off a show that is the top 5 shows for 20 weeks of the year. Hard to say. I know he’s been doing lots of other stuff – seen hints, heard whispers – but he keeps it close to the vest. Very annoying. 🙂
Love that picture of Roshon and Chelsie. This season, I feel Chelsie is showing TPTB that she has what it takes to continue to be a regular pro on the show. They’re obviously looking to bring on new faces, and she wants to make sure she doesn’t get sidelined.
Derek doesn’t have “pull” in the negative sense. I think he has “cred” with TPTB. So he feels comfortable asking for what he needs to make his celeb shine, and he has the wisdom to *not* do it week after week.
PH, I like that Derek doesn’t talk up all the potential projects he’s been approached with or is in discussions for. So many of those projects never see the light of day, and young stars who babble about all the great stuff they have lined up look pretty silly when most of them never get green-lit.
Just to add to the discussion, we know it’s not true that they have no say. I’ve heard them say before that before the season they provide the producers a list of possible songs and which dances they would work with. Then, I’m sure the producers go through a combination of getting the songs cleared and Harold Wheeler deciding if the band can do that song.
John, that was a couple seasons ago. I’m not sure that’s true any more because I’ve heard Derek say twice this season that he was given a song that wouldn’t work or that he didn’t like at all and that he went to them and asked for a different one. There’s been a good bit of complaining about songs the past couple seasons. Clearly, Derek feels he can ask for a different song…but Chelsie might not feel like she can do that. I think it has to do with how secure you feel in your job. Chelsie might not feel that secure.
Cidra, part of me likes that Derek is very tight lipped (unlike some other pros on this show) about what he’s got going on – but the other part of my is DYING of curiosity. 🙂
I was actually thinking about Maks. He keeps complaining he’s getting DANCES that don’t show Melissa at her best. What?
If next season is an all star season, it would be hard to watch it without Derek 🙁
If I’m not mistaken, the only ‘complaint’ Maks had about Melissa’s dance was last week’s dance when he said that he’d been trying to get it changed because she wasn’t ready for it yet and another choice would be better for her progression as a student. Not as daunting, I would assume. Because God knows, she’s gotten little encouragement from the judges. It seemed a logical request to me and would have had it come from any of the pros.
You mean TPTB wouldn’t change it??? Not fair if they’re changing others!
What are you talking about, Meggie?? No one is saying anything like that, as far as I can see. Did I miss something??
Ah, PH, you know what they say, “curiosity killed the cat.” LOL Somebody better talk to Derek about opening up a bit, we can’t afford to lose our “Pure Princess” 😛
I was referring to Evaine’s comment # 9. Did I misunderstand? ….that TPTB wouldn’t change Maks & Melissa’s music when asked? That’s the way I read it. 🙂
Meggie, it wasn’t just the MUSIC, it was the style of dance. 🙂 Sorry if I wasn’t clear.
I just wasn’t sure who you were referring to, Meggie.
I don’t think they would EVER change the style of dance no matter who asked (not that anyone has), but I think they try to accommodate on the music. But obviously they won’t always be able to – you have to get the songs legally cleared, you can’t just pick and choose at will.
I don’t think they would ever change the style either, Heidi, but it’s a fact that Maks did ask to have Melissa’s style changed for this past week. He said as much in one of the after show interviews, that he was trying to convince the producers to change because of the reasons I mentioned. I understand his reasoning, but I also understand the producers not wanting to open that can of worms.
Sorry guys, I should have said whom I was referring to … posting in too much haste! 🙂
I think the dances are set before the season starts. I didn’t realize Maks had asked, but you would think he would know that they wouldn’t do it. I remember when Joanna had, like, 4 latin dances in a row and Derek started to get really worried that no one would see what else she could do. But there’s no way they can start doing that – can you imagine? Every one would be wanting to change.
I guess he figured that the worst they’d do would be say no. Couldn’t hurt to try. *LOL*
I always wondered for premiere night how they determine who gets what? Having as a first impression. a showstopping/standout performance on night 1 is incredible. The contestants with the Cha Cha I always felt started out with somewhat of an edge.
