DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Apolo Ohno Edition

Today we continue our series with season 4 winner Apolo Ohno – and if you’re still playing catch-up, be sure to check out our previous editions featuring Kelly Monaco, Emmitt Smith, Drew Lachey, & Joey Fatone 😎

For Apolo’s best dance, I picked his samba – which I still think is the best samba from a contestant that we’ve ever seen on DWTS:

For his worst dance, I picked the ill-advised Pulp Fiction jive he & Julianne did:

I think the most obvious advantage that jumps out at me when I watch these videos is chemistry – Apolo & Julianne had FANTASTIC chemistry, and I think that helped carry them through week after week.  The question is: can he forge that same chemistry with Karina? If he can, then I think these two could be frontrunners this season.  Apolo’s obviously got some natural rhythm and is comfortable moving his body, so Karina’s definitely got something to work with.  However, Apolo’s Achilles’ heel (hehe) does seem to be really refined footwork – I saw instances in both his samba & his jive (ESPECIALLY his jive) where he just seems to put his feet wherever they feel comfortable, and the end result looks a bit confused and purposeless.  POINT YOUR TOES, APOLO! I also think his showmanship could use a little work – Apolo mentions in samba rehearsals that he’s used to keeping a “poker face” in speed skating, so it’s hard for him to really use his face to emote.  He did pretty well in season 4, but I still saw a few instances of “poker face” – especially if he wasn’t quite sure of what he was doing and was trying to regain his bearings…I noticed it in his jive, whenever he seemed to foul up.  With such big personalities like Joey & Kirstie around this season, I think Apolo is going to have to really work on projecting a BIG personality on the floor – he’s got the range of motion, now he just needs the range of personality 🙂 I also hope that Karina is able to strike a nice balance between dancing well and not outdancing Apolo – as much as I loved Julianne with Apolo, I do think there were times that she really outshined him, and I noticed it big time in their samba.  I do think Karina is a pro that is able to find that right balance, though, so I think that’s an advantage.

Court’s verdict: Definitely one to watch, especially if he can forge a good chemistry with Karina & clean up his footwork – and if he can bring enough personality to the table to compete with big personalities like Joey & Kirstie 🙂

So what are your thoughts on Apolo? Does he have the juice to go all the way?

DWTS All Stars Campaigning, Carson Kressley So Funny!!

Carson Kressley is cracking me up again. Below is what he posted at his Facebook today for why fans should vote for him for the 13th spot on Dancing With The Stars. Figures about #3 though. Why am I not surprised? 😕

The 5 Reasons to vote for Carson c/o ABC News:
1. I’ve been practicing a lot. My rumba looks amazing. Oh, and did I mention my dancing’s gotten pretty good, too?!
2. I’m an athlete. No really, I was the world champion amateur riding at the Worlds Championship Horse Show in 2009.
3. I reached out to Bristol Palin on Twitter. No response, but I think we could be friends!
4. I’ve already started designing my costumes. Let’s just say “sparkly” is an understatement.
5. Maks gives amazing shoulder massages and I have to get back on for All-Stars, so I can return the favor!

Also, here is Carson on Good Morning America today. FUN FUN FUN!!

Stay tuned. We find out MONDAY who will fill the 13th spot on Good Morning America! We’ll post the coverage as soon as we can.

ADDING: Carson also has a new blog up at parade.com that is well worth the fun read. Below is a take….

And that’s exactly what I thought when I heard I was one of three fan favorites nominated to be selected by the fans as the thirteenth contestant on the show! Isn’t everyone a former mirror ball winner? The answer is no…not Kirstie Alley, not Pamela Anderson and not Bristol Palin!

I think the rationale is that you didn’t have win your season, but you did need to bring something unique to the show— and you need to appeal to the show’s wide variety of fans.

For me it crystallizes into one word: sparkle. The show needs sparkle. Sure, Emmitt Smith will bring his athletic game to the season. Yes, Kelly Monaco will show the skill she showed to win season one. And most certainly Olympian Apolo Ohno will be great as well. But do they have sparkle? Do they have a sense of fun? Will they wear hot pants? Nope. That’s my job.

Dancing with the Stars is a variety show in the greatest sense of the word. There is live music, singing, dancing, drama and comedy. And what they need is not a cast of all great dancers and former champions, but a variety to keep it fun and interesting. It’s about being entertained. Did I mention they need ME?!

And how fun would it be to see me and the likes of Bristol Palin battling it out? Me and Pam Anderson comparing notes on hair color? And then, there is the intense sexual chemistry between me and Maks.

Right on Carson!! I want to see the hot pants! 😀

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing With The Stars Lacey Schwimmer Hired As Choreographer For Strictly Come Dancing

Pictured above is Dancing With The Stars Lacey Schwimmer with the current cast of Strictly Come Dancing. According to Telly Mix, BBC1 has hired Lacey to be a choreographer for the show. Below is a take from the link…

The Beeb has been helping out the Strictly team here in the UK ahead of the new series launching next month.

The brunette beauty, related to Friends star David Schwimmer, revealed on Twitter this week she had been working with the show’s professional dancers.

She wrote on the online social networking website: “Off to work with all the hunky men of Strictly Come Dancing… goodness my job is so difficult ;)”, and even posted a picture with the Strictly pros.

The launch show is set to air on September 15 while the first live show will follow three weeks later on October 5.

It sounds more and more like Lacey might be preparing or moving on from the TV version of Dancing With The Stars? If true, it makes me a little sad. I wasn’t a big fan, but, I really enjoyed Lacey’s pairings with Kyle Massey and Chaz Bono. I also think she’s one of the best choreographers from all the dancers. Let’s get Miss Heidi and Court’s thoughts. I deem this day as Miss Heidi and Courtney Appreciation Day. Love my Sis’s so much. Who is with me?

Courtney: Since seeing Lacey in the Vegas show, I’ve kinda gotten the vibe that she’s happier there, and maybe isn’t terribly eager to return to the tv show.  I think she enjoys the fact that she is basically the head female pro in the Vegas show, while she has to compete with a ton of other female pros for attention on the tv version.  I think it also allows her to stretch her legs choreographically and actually do a lot of the creative, out-of-the-box stuff that she wouldn’t be able to get away with on the tv show.  For those same reasons, I think she probably jumped at the chance to choreograph for SCD – and honestly, I think SCD could use a bit of a breath of fresh air, considering that I hear from most who watch both DWTS & SCD that the latter is kinda boring & old-fashioned in comparison to its US counterpart.  Who better than to liven things up than Lacey? 🙂 I also find it telling that she doesn’t seem to be too jazzed about the all-star season, even though I’m pretty sure she’ll be the one coming back to partner either Kyle or Carson, if one of them wins the voting for the 13th contestant.  Maybe she’s known all along that she’s got all of this other stuff going on that is a lot less demanding (physically, mentally, & emotionally) than the tv show.  Regardless, good for Lacey – if DWTS is being wishy-washy about whether they want her or not, I don’t blame her for accepting an offer from a show that clearly DOES want her.

Heidi: Strictly could certainly use Lacey, but I got the feeling that this was a one-time deal, not a recurring theme. I could be wrong.  I know that viewers of that show have been begging Derek to come over there as a pro for a few years (maybe they beg the others too, but I only have a Derek related search on my tweetdeck) because they see him as more exciting than any of their pros. But they will NEVER get Derek, Maks or any of the pros that have a regular spot on DWTS for the simple reason of money. From what I’ve heard, the US pros get better pay (by a lot) and used to get housing during the season. I’m not so sure that last bit is true any more – I noted a whole bunch of pros buying houses/condos all around the same time.  Of course, the US version of the show is seen by a LOT more people and the exposure is better.  None of the pros with a regular gig would voluntarily go to the UK version. So, it might be that Lacey sees some writing on the wall…or this could just be a one time thing.

Drew Lachey Discusses Parenting, 98 Degrees, and Dancing With The Stars (New Interview)

Parade.com has a great interview up with Drew Lachey. Not only is he excited to be reuniting with boy band 98 Degrees, he’s looking forward to another round of Dancing With The Stars. Read below for what he thinks about the competition and what he plans to do differently. More at the link including his thoughts about the differences between performers versus athletes, reuniting with his former band, and his parenting advise for his brother.

On his competition.
“Well, there are six champions and a lot of runner-ups. I’m glad I’m able to come back and prove to myself and everybody else that yes, the dancing and the talent have improved every season but season two can still hang! It’s going to be a lot of fun and I look forward to it. I think it will be looser at first until week one. Until they go, ‘oh snap! They brought it. I better step up my game!’ Once that happens, the gloves will come off and people will be competitive. Until that happens it’ll be pretty jovial and fun. We’ll see.”

What he’s going to do differently.
“For the most part I left it out there. There are a couple things I would have done differently like different costumes, different choreography. But I don’t do anything halfway and this season isn’t any different.”I’ve seen the seasons go by and I know what to expect a little bit more. In season 2, we were stil figuring out what the show was. They had a little costume room and now they like have a sweat shop. It takes up a whole floor. The show has expanded, the cast has expanded. Everything’s gotten bigger and better and shinier with more rhinestones. There’s going to be a learning curve but I feel confident with the knowledge from doing the show.”

On having new moves.
“There are certain things I can do physically that we didn’t quite take advantage of [on season two]. Not necessarily tricks but I’m more athletic than we took advantage of. Obviously the choreography is stepped up a lot. There are more dances. At that time, my wife was about to have a baby so I was all over the place. So it will be good to just be able to be t here and focus on what I have to do.”

On having Dancing on his mind 24/7.
“It’s weird, I listen to music in general and I go, ‘wow, that would make a really good salsa, or a really good Cha Cha.’ And I’m like, ‘what is wrong with you! stop thinking in those terms!’ Music is a huge part of my life so every song that I listen to, to have that be one of the first things, you want to get it out of your brain.”

Can’t wait to see Drew dance again. Speaking of, if you haven’t read Courtney’s new DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Drew Lachey Edition, be sure you do. She dissects Drew and whether he’ll be a force this season. You can see him in previous dances and currently dancing as well.

PureDWTS Damian Whitewood Attends Kandy Magazine’s 1st Anniversary Party

Isn’t it great to see Damian Whitewood? I wonder if we’ll ever see him dance on the US version of Dancing With The Stars again? I’m hoping we see him in some fashion this season. Maybe he’ll come and be a mentor to Pamela and Tristan for one week? I don’t know,..but, here he is on the Red Carpet at Kandy Magazine’s 1st Anniversary Party at Lure in Hollywood, California on August 17th. So cute as always. You can view more gorgeous takes of him at Starpulse.
