That’s all I can see on the list….Vogue??
Vogue: You’ve got them all. Good job!!! Also all, don’t miss seeing a fun video of Derek Hough talking with Paula Abdul about choreographing. From Emmy.com….
Here are some fun reactions from Tom and Derek at twitter….
Thank you all for the love and support . So happy to be nominated among such amazing choreographers .
— Derek Hough (@derekhough) July 18, 2013
And congrats too to @derekhough, who never ceases to amaze, on his well deserved @PrimetimeEmmys nominations!
— Tom Bergeron (@Tom_Bergeron) July 18, 2013
Congrats to the @DancingABC gang on another @PrimetimeEmmys nomination! See you all soon!

Also, don’t miss seeing Pure Derek Hough. Heidi has some great posts about Derek’s two nominations in more detail!
Only missing one I think: “Outstanding Art Direction For
Variety Or Nonfiction Programming”
Congratulations to everyone – but especially Derek. Now go get that award!
Trying not to get too optimistic, but I think this may finally be the year DWTS nabs an Emmy for outstanding choreography π It actually looks like SYTYCD’s noms are rather weak this year – the only one I’m not sure about is the Live from Lincoln Center one. Could play spoiler like the choreographer from Smash did last year.
It’s also looking like Tom may have a chance to nab Outstanding Host again – Jeff Probst is noticeably absent (again), and I don’t know if any of the other hosts are anything to sneeze at.
The caveate in the Choreo category is that they can give out more than one. With the absurd number of nominations, I’m wondering if they give one to Derek and one to Sonya – Nigel is so far up Emmy’s ass that they can’t NOT give him one. π Oh wait….they didn’t give him one last year. There’s hope. π
I’m really feeling it this year. Come on, Derek.
when are the awards?! so excited! finally:)
Thanks, Gitte – missed that one. Vogue will now take over for me and fill in all kinds of juicy detail as only she can do so well. No pressure, Vogue. π
I agree. Last season of Sytycd (S09) wasn’t that good in terms of choreography, except by Travis, IMO. I love Derek and Shawn dances, but I preffer his and Kellie’s.
I was also hoping to see Derek’s freestyle with Kellie Pickler nominated as well.
I think the Emmy Awards are giving out Sunday, Sept 22, 2013.
Stars also part of the nomination…Derek w/Brilynn Rakes who was blind.
I understand that people really liked Derek and Kellie’s Freestyle, but there’s a reason Shawn’s dances were included in the nomination over Kellie’s. It’s really hard, if not impossible, for an amateur to compete with two professional contemporary dancers, and Shawn and Derek had dances that not even SYTYCD could compete with. I, for one, am extremely pleased as I predicted every single dance that got Derek nominated. Derek and Shawn also have the highest views on Youtube since Nicole Scherzinger, so I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Didn’t know that Allison helped choreograph the dance with Brilynn
I would have liked to see his freestyle with Kellie there too – that dance was on the same level as many SYTYCD performances in my opinion. But I think that it might not have been eligible because it was performed after the cut off date?
As we’ve said many, many, MANY times before: YouTube views aren’t really indicative of anything, and I think you’re making a rather large leap in assuming that just because a YouTube video has a lot of views, that everyone watching it agrees with you, Leeny. And while your theory about amateurs vs. pros dancing might make sense, Kellie’s freestyle wasn’t nominated because it missed the deadline – otherwise, I think it would have stood a chance, as it was right up there with most professional theater arts competitors in terms of difficulty. Sorry to rain on your self-congratulatory parade. π
As much as I loved Derek and Kellie’s freestyle – I thought it was wonderful, powerful, emotional – it can’t compete with contemporary on SYTYCD. Derek was better off going with the three he did for the solo nomination. All that said, it is entirely possible that the freestyle was performed too late in the season to make the cut. But even still – you can only pick three and he picked the exact three that I thought he should for that nomination. That is a STRONG three dances. If that doesn’t get him an Emmy, nothing will.
Courtney, I’m just really happy for Derek. I, too, very much enjoyed Kellie’s Freestyle, as well as her Jazz piece. Obviously, not everyone agrees that Shawn’s dances were the best, as indicated by a few comments left here. I am just trying to help a few people make sense of the nomination, and lack thereof. I am aware of the deadline situation, but the Jazz piece was fully eligible, yet wasn’t nominated. I’m happy with the dances that were included, not because I predicted them, but because I feel they are the most deserving. If Kellie’s Jazz or Contemporary piece were nominated, I would have found them to be deserving as well. I’ll wait to pat myself on the back if Derek ends up winning.
To clarify a bit further on those wondering about Kellie’s freestyle. The DVD cutoff date was May 17th. Kellie’s freestyle was performed on May 20th. So, depending on all the caveats in the rules, and there are MANY, it MAY not have been eligible. I say “may” because there are all sorts of little lines in the rules that make me think that, if he wanted to, Derek could have substituted one of the three dances previously submitted with the freestyle. It says you can alter your submittal right up to the May 31st deadline – but since most of the rules are talking about shows that are taped and not performed live, I’m not sure if that applies here.
Actually, it does in one respect. The entry deadline was three days BEFORE Defying Gravity was actually performed and he clearly substituted a dance with that one, since it got nominated. I’m just not sure if you can do that after the DVD deadline. It’s quite confusing. In any case, I think he submitted his three strongest dances and ones that will set him apart from the SYTYCD crew, easily. They won’t get lost in the contemporary shuffle like I’m afraid his freestyle with Kellie might have.
I am so happy that Derek is being recognized for is amazing work on DWTS.
Congratulations to Derek on his nominations. So well deserved. He is truly a genius in this field.
I agree the three dances picked were the strongest.
Go Derek – Get that Emmy. Also congrats to Tom-he is the best.
Wow! That’s a good number of nominations for DWTS! I’m very happy for them. I’m especially thrilled for Tom and Derek. Truly deserving! Hoping that they’ll win! Congrats to all! Congrats, too, PureDWTS! Great job as always! π
So Emmy nominations earned by the DWTS pros are now:
Derek: 5 (2009,2×2010,2×2013)
Cheryl: 2 (2×2006)
Julianne: 2 (2008,2009)
Tony: 1 (2006)
Nick: 1 (2006)
Louis: 1 (2007)
Chelsie: 1 (2010)
Mark: 1 (2011)
Have I missed anyone?
Chelsie got one with Derek – not sure if that is included in your Derek number either.
Very impressive and exciting!
Hearing Derek is nominated for some of his dances with Shawn makes the outcome from that season a little easier to stomach. I am a very proud fan.
Congratulations to Derek for well deserved nominations! I have a feeling we’ll see him accepting his Emmy this year. I’m assuming that Derek can submit the Freestyle dance with Kellie for next year’s nominations if he missed the cutoff this year?
Who needs a mirrorball when you got Emmy nominations? I bet “the fam” is really loving this one.
No, Jane, he can’t. Next years eligibility period started June 1, 2013.
Tom should win for his ad lib after Kellie and Derek’s jazz performance alone:
“If you’re just tuning in, we’re playing ‘Find the Body Fat'”
Derek has a real change of winning this year, the sytycd nominations are really weak, Sonya has one great dance but I don’t think is enough for her to win. The mambo/quickstep/ defying gravity is a great combo because shows so much versatility and all three dances are amazing unlike the other nominations.
I agree about the Kelly contemporary comment, as great as that was in a sea of contemporary pieces with crazy technique (mandy, sonya and travis), I don’t think the piece would really stand out (or even the jazz), no matter how good it was. And in the balroom area his best work was with Shawn for sure, not only in choreography but in execution. And since Derek was robbed of a mirrorball during that season, how awesome would be win a emmy for that.
Since Smash won last year, and so many contemporary already won, I do think Derek has a even bigger chance.
Heidi: Yes, Chelsie’s nomination is the one she got with Derek. There are four shared nominations as far as I remember: Chelsie & Derek, Julianne & Derek, Allison & Derek and Cheryl & Nick. I’m not sure what Cheryl & Nick’s nomination was for (same with Cheryl’s and Tony’s individuel nominations). The 2006 nominations doesn’t mention exact performances.
All of Derek’s productions are a joy and privilege to watch. His entire body of work deserves recognition and praise. His noms. with
Shawn are vindication that they were robbed of the mirrorball. His gravity dance was beyond thrilling, and should win it all.
Congratulations to DWTS for all of the Emmy nominations especially those for Tom and for Derek. Tom is simply an awesome host and Derek is a wonderful choreographer. As a Shawn and Derek fan, I’m so happy to see that the two of the dances that he did with her gave way to one of his Emmy nominations. I think Tom and Derek both have a good chance of winning. π
YAY!!! SO excited for Derek Hough!! If he doesn’t win this year, with the amazeballs dances he did well, I just don’t know what they’re looking for!
This is wonderful news and proof that positive thinking does work sometimes!
Does anyone know who actually gets to vote for the choreography award? Is it anyone who’s a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences? Or is it like a specialized branch of members?
The reason I’m curious is that to the average person watching all the nominated dances, how on earth could you not vote for Derek after being dazzled by his dances, especially Defying Gravity?
Unless you’re brain dead, mentally deranged or just incredibly stupid.
I’m really pulling for Art Direction, Hairstyling and Make-up as well to win. They work hard week after week to successfully dazzle us.
I am so happy for Derek. He deserves the honor and to win.
I am so happy for Derek. He deserves the honor and to win. Go Derek
For the first time I think they got it right! Very happy, and very proud of Derek!
Congratulations Derek on your two Emmy Nominations. He’s choreographed some truly amazing/classic routines in the past two seasons. From his Quickstep with Shawn in S15 to his emotional “work of art” freestyle with Kellie last season. He’s a passionate choreographer, artist and performer who continues to set the bar on DWTS. His defying gravity routine with Jami was nothing short of spectacular. I’m still blown away by that performance.
Hope you built that shelf because its time to get your Emmy Mr. Hough “AKA” Mr. Choreography!!
Congrats also to Tom and everyone nominated associated with DWTS.
So so happy to see Derek nominated again!
We all know that people vote for different reasons, and if the All Star season’s voting public wanted to see Melissa’s hard work pay off when it previously didn’t, that’s fine, it’s a legit reason.
But that outcome left a bad taste in my mouth SPECIFICALLY for the reason that has now been acknowledged by the Emmy noms. The entire season’s theme for me was Derek’s innovation, made possible by Shawn, whose expertise made her on a whole new level compared to other contestants. I keep saying this, but, Yes, Derek, 15 seasons in, I truly agree with you that I’ve seen a thousand different sambas and cha-chas, and THANK YOU for understanding that!
The Hey Pachuco routine was so much more than just flash, it was incredibly well put together, incredibly thrilling. The Mambo? Same. That week, Paula was in the house, and she witnessed Derek and Shawn move forward, while most of the other contestants (Melissa and Tony especially unsubtly), were still reeling from the Hey Pachuco routine and trying to catch up to Shawn.
This is why Derek and Shawn really deserved some kind of recognition from that season, and if not a Mirrorball, then all the better it be an Emmy nom!
PS: Terryn and Joey, the Creative Emmys are generally given a week before the Primetime Ceremony, so around the 15th of September is when we know Derek’s outcome. Best wishes to him!!
I’m so happy for Derek. His hard work deserves all the recognition. I don’t know how the voting works for the Emmys. Would the fact that he’s nominated twice hurt him in that it could split the votes depending on which routines the voters prefer more? I hope this is not the case. In my ideal world, Derek would get two Emmy awards to make up for all the other seasons he has been overlooked.
Pretty sure it’s a juried award and there are no “voters” – just a jury deciding if the dances are Emmy worthy. Which, of course, makes the politics even worse.
So happy for Derek – two *very* well deserved nominations! I think he has a real shot at winning, especially since Stacey Tookey (who I thought had the best contemporary routines from last season of SYTYCD – Bang Bang, Leave and I Will Always Love You) was inexplicably not nominated. I went and looked up all the nominated routines on YouTube (except I’m not sure about the Lincoln Center one) and Derek’s dances are the most unique and diverse. And of course no one has anything like “Defying Gravity” – that should really be a gimme. The question is, can both his nominations win (given that they can award more than one)? If so, that would be *so* awesome.
