DWTS Season 18, Week 1: Who’s Dancing What…and When??
I can’t believe Season 18 is here – seems like 17 just ended, to be honest. But only because I’ve been working my fingers to the bone. 🙂 And now I’m sick, to top it all off.
Anyway. Let’s see…what do we know so far? That Maks loves Meryl and he calls her “Princess”. For real – not condescendingly, but genuinely. We heard it through the grapevine. 😉 It appears they are getting along very well – he is pleased that she’s hard working and she seems to respond well to his style of teaching. What we also know is that both Meryl and Charlie’s routines are looking REALLY GOOD – but I guess none of you are shocked by that, are ya??
We heard one other thing but I’ll save that for another time. Ahem. Nothing for you all to worry about. I’ll let Courtney share that one when she feels like it. 😀
So, who’s dancing what? Well, since I’ve been getting killed at work and have managed to get sick, I’m going by Wiki and by DWTSGossip on the dances – I haven’t been able to keep up and Vogue is already doing so much for me that I didn’t want to bug her with this too. 🙂 The order shown below is my GUESS and until you see a dance order and phone number near the names, it’s not official. Spots 6 and 7 are likely the top of the 9 o’clock hour and is a good spot. Least good spot? Historically it’s been 3rd and 2nd – I believe in that order. Of course, there is no real pimp spot anymore since they end every show except the first one with an elimination. But it’s still the best place to be, IMO. Until we get past the halfway point in the season, these things seem to be true. Once we get past the halfway point, the order doesn’t really matter as much.
ETA: I was off by a bit with James. He gave his voting number and TYPICALLY this matches the dance order. Not always. Sometimes they switch people around on Monday for one reason or another. I’m leaving my guess number in there just to see how I do. 🙂
ETA2: As you can see, I’m sucking a bit at my first guess of the season. 🙂

ETA4: Just a reminder – every season except the last one, the phone number has been a sign of the dance order on the first night. So, while it’s likely that these are the dance numbers in addition to the phone numbers, it’s entirely possible it could get screwed up between now and tomorrow night. Think muppets. 🙂
ETA5: So if Meryl is really 6th…who is going last? Charlie? Cheryl straight up said that she and Drew are dancing 9th, so there’s that.
ETA6: Court hopping in to update Amy & Derek and Billy & Emma’s voting #s/positions. Should be interesting to see who gets the pimp spot – at this point, I’m leaning towards Charlie & Sharna. Also looks like the first hour has been loaded up with most of the “weaker” couples – the second hour looks to be pretty competitive. By the way, Happy Saint Patty’s Day and Happy DWTS Premiere Day, errebody 🙂
ETA7: Heidi here with Charlie’s dance number. Seems I had Charlie and Meryl pretty much reversed in my guesses. I guess Charlie beats Maks. LOL.
ETA8: List is complete as Cody’s mom tweets his voting #. I would assume that Candace & Mark are dancing 7th, as that’s the last spot left.

It’s nice to hear that Maks is behaving. I haven’t made it a secret that I haven’t cared for him or his brother. I did like Maks until he had Hope and I was one that was glad when he left. Maybe Meryl is a good influence on him.

Can’t wait till Monday nite. I can’t help but wonder if they will give out the first 10 of the season very early.
Meryl and Charlie certainly are spectacular in ballroom. To make it competitive the judges will have to downplay their performances or it will be a two way comp from beginning to end.

Rosie, I’m not sure it will be the “Dancing with Meryl and Charlie” show all the way to the finals. They share the same fan base, and “America” is used to rooting for them as a couple. My guess is a lot of people are going to split their votes between the two. That could result in a shocking elimination midway through the season.
I agree with Vogue on the scoring except for Diana and Henry…I will say 6/6/6
I am getting a kick out of Maks going to be so sweet this season and no complaints about his partner, he finally got his dream partner. She has it all. Let us see if he can make through a season without making her cry….then I will truly believe he has changed….I am just saying.

Can someone help me remember–didn’t Zendaya Shawn and Melissa Ry. get to skip doing rumba for some reason and do you think that TPTB will let Amy pass on the jive?? Cause altho she looks pretty strong I would think pounding up and down for jive would cause HUGE pressure point problems on her legs at points where she’s not used to it and cauee on-going probs with following dances. I had relative with a prosthetic leg, and one of his biggest hinderances were open wounds from wear at the pressure points, and altho I’m sure they have new technology, pressure points can still with Derek even mentioned in his TV Guide blog.

Shawn did rumba with both Derek and Mark, I believe. But yes, Zen and Melissa both got to skip it. Interestingly, Melissa said it was the dance she was most worried about, if I remember correctly.
Yup, rumba was the one dance Melissa said she didn’t want to do again and she didn’t do well either.
They made exceptions before but I am sure those Melissa and Zendaya fans will scream unfair about Derek favoritism if Amy skips the jive. Wish they would but I doubt it will happen. These are same folks who complained Amber did a dance in a chair ( doing intricate tutting) but never complain when Sasha! Maks and Val just choreograph vamping/ walking around with no dancing do any sort,
It would be very easy for TPTB to let Amy skip the Jive if they want to. The couples no longer do all the same dances now that they’ve thrown in Contemporary, Jazz, and whatever they want.
I did a scan of the Season 17 finalists’ individual dances, and unless I made a mistake (which is entirely possible), here’s what I got.
They all did: ChaCha, Foxtrot, Jive, Paso, Qstep, Tango, and VWaltz.
Amber didn’t do ATango, Contemporary or Waltz.
Corbin didn’t do Charleston, Salsa, or Samba.
Jack didn’t do Charleston, Contemporary or Salsa.
Bill didn’t do Contemporary, Jazz, Rumba, or Waltz (but he did Disco).
I remember during season 16 everyone was saying well if you sign up for this show, you have to do all the required dances. So Zen being 16 didnt matter. Val could of done a more sensual rumba with her if she was given the dance by tptb but she wasnt, just like Kellie wasnt given the salsa during that season, was she afraid of a little hip action or Jacoby the Samba was the footwork to difficult for him. Im sure if Amy gets the jive Derek could go more the Maria Menounos route where they skipped out on the kicks and flicks and she still got a 29 for the dance and if she dosnt do it Im sure people will be understanding.
I have no problem with Amy skipping the Jive. If Billy Dee is in for a while I would be okay with him skipping it as well due to his age.

People say that Meryl reminds them of a Disney princess come to life. Of any of them I guess she resembles Belle the most, which also happens to be my favorite princess. Let the Beauty tames the Beast comparisons begin!

I’m curious to see what Cody/Witney, James/Peta, Candace/Mark, Karina/Sean, and Diana/Henry have to offer. I hope Karina has gotten something out of Sean and that Henry has Diana “owning” her Foxtrot.

Yeah, kelly, but Kellie did do Samba (twice) and I think that’s the harder dance than Salsa. So it had nothing to do with hip action and everything to do with Jazz and contemporary being added to the mix.

CC, it’s the other way around. The *dance order* in week 1 determines the phone number for that couple for the rest of the season.
The cock-up with the phone numbers one week last season was due to some backstage monkey getting it wrong.
Danica replied to someone on twitter with their number: 1-800-868-3403. Since it was a reply I wasn’t sure if you caught it or not.
There was “some” mess, CC. And it’s not the first time it’s happened. But typically, the numbers do match the order on the first night.

Honestly, I do like seeing where you had originally placed them, vs where they get put in dance order, it’s just that my brain isn’t cooperating. And it’s probably because of how you’re feeling that you’re off this week.

I am starting to think this numbers does not corespond to the dance order. Two foxtrots and contempory with no cha cha?

I think my brain is about a few days behind me right now is all…. When the placements are all in, I’m sure it’ll be less confusing for me. Or, when I no longer feel like my head is going to explode, and I’m not alternating hot and cold, and have everyone out of the house where they belong during the day so when I attempt a nap, I actually can nap and not have someone talking to me every 30 seconds wanting communication…. Maybe things will look right.

Interesting that they have Danica and Val dancing 3rd, which as PH said was, historically, one of the less desirable spots. If they’re interested in helping Val get an MBT (can’t figure out why they care), you’d think they would give this couple a more desirable spot. Oh well, I’m sure TPTB have some plan in mind.
It seems (if the first four couples are correct) like a *very* cha cha heavy second hour to the show – especially considering that there are more cha chas than foxtrots or contemporaries to start with.

Something tells me ABC is going to be promoting this big Maks return all night long. Then after this week it will become more about Meryl vs Charlie.
I’ve been hoping for a Disney music week for a while now. I hope they do it and actually bring on Alan Menken to play the songs! Plus a great tie-in for Idina Menzel to sing Let It Go live. I hope the costumes are amazing too!
If you’ve seen Meryl and Charlie’s Scheherazade program, she pulls off a really good Princess Jasmine. 🙂 Speaking of which, I saw Aladdin on Broadway Friday night and there was a nice brief homage to DWTS during Friend Like Me, complete with a MBT. Show is worth seeing for anyone in the area.
I don’t think they’ll close the show with Charlie seeing as he is dancing Contemporary and I think most times they close with a Cha Cha. They’ll probably have Charlie go right after Meryl (or before)
M guess is they will probably end the show with Amy and Derek. Probably because of her inspirational story and it might keep people tuned in to see them dance. Plus, I think they will be very good and deliver a Cha Cha worthy of closing the show.
Once again, unless there is a red dancing number under the name, THAT IS NOT THE ORDER. It’s where they landed when the actual order started coming in.

I did think that Derek and Amy would go toward the end, for that reason CC, but I wonder. She may not be the biggest “get” but she is certainly inspirational. I guess we’ll have to wait and see since Derek doesn’t like to share and that tends to rub off on his partners.
I’m just so meh about everything — the changes to the show, the pairings, Erin Andrews. I just can’t get excited. Plus, I have so many other things to watch on Mondays, something has to go. Since I’m not so excited about this season, it’ll have to be this show. Maybe I’ll check things out in between commercials.
#40 Cidra, Both Hines & Donald danced third for their seasons and they both won ……. just an interesting tidbit.

So I think Derek & Amy will be amazing! I really hope she does well…really gutsy to come out & do this imo…& did everyone read where she said she had to duck tape a part of her legs because they come off with the push of a button & the button is right by her knee’s which she will be swinging a lot & putting together…which could cause a problem they were saying…omg hope it all goes ok for them!
