Erin Andrews Interviewed About DWTS Replacement Rumors, The Switch Up Dance, And More
TV Guide intereviewed Erin Andrews about the rumors that the producers of Dancing With The Stars are thinking of replacing her. She immediately called producers and asked them about it. Below is what she tells TV Guide…
“I’ve got to be honest. … It kind of got me worried and scared,” Andrews told TVGuide.com last week, noting that she immediately called producers to do damage control. “I just went back and forth with the producers like, ‘Are we good here? Please tell me what I need to work on. Please tell me what I need to do. ‘And they’re like, ‘We couldn’t be happier.'”
And below are her thoughts about the Switch Up Dance, which celebs she’s the most impressed with so far, and the stiff competition….
Next week is the switch-up. As a former competitor, how would you have felt about switching partners?
Andrews: Oh, I wouldn’t have liked it, but I like that the show’s doing it. I think every little twist and turn they can add to the show and spice it up — it’s been on for 18 seasons, so you’ve got to do something to keep it new and fresh. But I wouldn’t have liked it. You get in such a comfort zone with your pro dancer, and you know they know your weaknesses and your strengths. Somebody like Amy, who has been obviously going through so much with Derek [Hough], and Derek really seems to understand her. Not that the other pro dancers wouldn’t, but it gets you out of your comfort zone. You’re already out of your comfort zone doing ballroom dancing in front of millions of people on prime-time television, so it just adds one more element of like, oh God, what am I doing here?Which celebs have you been most impressed with this season?
Andrews: Well, I think right off the bat most impressed and most surprised would be Amy. I don’t think any of us really knew what to expect. And to say that we’ve all been moved to tears pretty much every week is an understatement. … You know, she was already a very inspiring person, but [Derek’s] just kind of peeling off these layers for her and showing her, and showing all of us, what is possible, and that’s so special. And I just get choked up every single time I think about it, because I’m so proud of her and I don’t even really know her very well. I’m so thankful somebody like her is showing really all her strengths. You would think they would be weaknesses, and they’re not. Danica [McKellar] has been unbelievable. She’s really talented. And I think Candace [Cameron Bure] too. A lot has to be said about somebody who hasn’t taken a dance class before. Mark is a very talented and special choreographer, and he’s really playing to her strengths and I think that’s very cool to see as well. [Charlie White’s] personality is really starting to come out. I saw it especially last week. He’s so sweet. … And Meryl [Davis], I think she’s like a Disney princess. She’s just so graceful and so gorgeous, and I’m so glad she was paired with Maksim [Chmerkovskiy] for so many reasons. I’ve really enjoyed both of them.It seems like the competition is especially stiff this season.
Andrews: My mom said that the other night. My mom watches the show, she loves the show. … I think with my year, you could kind of see that Nicole Scherzinger, was going to blow everybody out of the water. But this year, the competition [is fierce], and the stories behind it — and that’s exactly what the show wanted and needed. It’s been a really fun journey.

Well it is good that she wants to know if she is doing something wrong and that she is aware of the mistakes she’s making. I’m still giving her some more weeks to see how she does. That thing she said, though, about the show needing Maks … yeaaaaah I don’t think so. The show was doing just well without him. Not that I don’t like Maks, but it isn’t like him being on the show makes it a whole lot better (at least to me) 😛
TPTB probably told Brooke the same thing right up until they showed her the door!
I’m glad she can see that she was a bit aggressive week 1. Still a bit pushy, but the first week was the worst for me.
Wouldn’t they have meetings about how your boss thinks you are doing your job?
Based on what she says about maybe being able to bring in a different demo to DWTS (like Strahan bringing in women to football), it appears that was one of the reasons she was added to the show and probably what the show told her. I wonder if the show ever thought about her “aggressive” style turning off the female viewers more than her bringing men to the show. I can’t imagine men tuning into DWTS, hoping to catch 4 minutes of Erin. If the show wants male viewers, maybe they need to do an all male athlete season.
I’ll tolerate Erin but the show better not be planning to down play Tom’s role. I feel like we are getting less of him this season or he’s being overshadowed by Erin, but maybe it’s my imagination. Odd she never once mentions Tom in the interview, although there are a few questions where he could have been brought up. For some reason I feel like Tom isn’t happy with this change, but once again I could be wrong. Her standing there with her “I have to pee” crossed legs, just so she can look shorter next to Tom looks so ridiculous, it certainly makes things feel even more uncomfortable between them.
@KarenT- it isn’t odd that she didn’t mention Tom. Tom is not the focus of DWTS, and technically they are co-hosts(co being the term for more than 1 when neither has the bigger role. <- straight from my old hs English class way back when). There is nothing wrong with her wanting to focus on herself during her interview. If they wanted to know about Tom, I'm sure they would have asked.
I just viewed Erin and Tom as being co-WORKERS and based on some of the questions posed, it seemed her responses might have included something about Tom. For example, how much fun she and Tom are having hosting the show, etc.
Personally I love the idea someone presented on this board. Have the pros and stars interview each other in the sky box. I guess we will see if Erin survives past this season. That will tell us whether the number crunchers think she brought in more male viewers. If she did, the producers will love her. If not, she might be their sacrificial lamb.
I don’t understand the perception Erin is overshadowing Tom or stealing his air time. Tom is still the one introducing the dancers and standing with them during the judges critiques and taking us to/from commercial breaks. Then they go upstairs to Erin and she interviews them after their dances. How is this overshadowing Tom or any different than what Brooke was doing?
And KarenT, I don’t think she was standing like that to look shorter next to Tom. She always stands like that and it’s something she or her people should have corrected years ago. Check out any red carpet pictures of her, she always looks like she has to pee.
#KarenT … A big thank you for supporting my idea of having the pros/stars do the interviewing in the skybox. It’s nice to know that someone else can see it the same way. Unfortunately, two does not a groundswell make, except in my appreciation for the mention.
Yeah, I bet Brooke Burke was told the same thing. Nah, I’m leaning to them not telling her flat out that they were planning on letting her go.
Not defending Erin, but Erin, I would take ANY AND EVERYTHING tptb say with a grain of salt.
Nope, still not happy with her, her week 1 performance as cohost told me all I need to know about her and her true form. She can go. NOW.
I’m sick to death of Erin Andrews smut comments and every week she’s getting worse. Tonight, Erin’s comment rehashing something about incest (which I actually missed in package) was it for me, on a family show. Brooke was ditsy but very sweet. If TPTB really want the male viewers, let’s face it:
Men tuned in to DWTS to stare at Brooks boobs.
