Danica McKellar Injured During Rehearsals For Dancing With The Stars
Let’s hope she’s going to be ok!! Here is more from People.com.
Danica McKellar was injured during a practice for Dancing with The Stars on Thursday, apparently breaking her rib.
The former star of The Wonder Years, 39, Tweeted about it Friday, and asked fans for a little support.
“So…I broke a rib in yesterday’s #DWTS rehearsal. Trying my best to pull thru and could use your prayers!! #wanttokeepdancing,” she wrote.
ETA: Below is an On The Red Carpet rehearsal interview with Danica and Val. More on this interview HERE!
I think this will be a big story Monday night with lots of drama – will she dance or not-,the usual nonsense. Val posted a pic of him and Danica leaving for D.C. looking all happy etc and then she tweets her broken rib. Weird to me that she even mentioned it but it has given her publicity. I think I am getting cynical.
I’m more cynical in a, how convenient would it be if she would have to sit out this week with the Team Dances currently having an uneven number, kind of way.
I think the media might be blowing Danica’s injury a bit out-of-proportion…last I heard, she was still able to rehearse. She’s not completely immobile.
The best example of how to deal with an injury the week of team dances comes from Melissa Rycroft in season 15. Lots of meds.
Hehe…I remember that, Susan. I think Melissa was flying high on Vicodin that night 😛
Well, I guess we know who’s going last on Monday night.
Will she or will she not dance?!? The suspense is killing me……..
Danica said she broke a rib. I hope that’s not true, that’s serious. Melissa had herniated disc not broken rib.
I’m confused..a herniated disc isn’t serious?
Check out the update in the first post if interested for a rehearsal interview!!
@PJ…I lived with a herniated disc in my neck for 26 years from a car accident. (my Neurosurgeon said I went to long without surgery) Never had a broken rib, but know people who had broken ribs. I wouldn’t say “broken” but cracked is a more realistic word. Broken tends to give a broke off meaning, and Danica would be in surgery if that were the case. These two types of injuries are a different kind of pain from each other.
Like Courtney said…She will need to be high on Vicodin!!!
I’m sorry to hear this and hope it isn’t as bad as media is portraying.
@Courtney..#5…I met to say (like Courtney said with Melissa …Danica will need to be flying high on Vicodin, also.
I just read Danica’s comment and she does say she broke a rib. I am thinking more on the line of a cracked or fractured rib.
Saying a prayer for Danica and hope she can dance Monday.
@ Kat ouch. Sorry to hear, sounds really painful. I can’t imagine what that is like. I do agree with u that if Danica is going to dance, her injury is more along the lines of a cracked or hairline fracture, rather than a “broken rib”.
I agree with KKat. I think the average person tends to say “broken rib” when they really mean “cracked rib”. My understanding is it’s still bloody painful so I’m not minimizing the discomfort she’s in, but I’m also cynical enough to believe she and, definitely, TPTB will use it — she to create sympathy votes and the show to manufacture drama. It’s all quite *yawn* to me.
This show has made me so cynical and looking for conspiracy theories that…..
After my initial reaction of “OuCH and OMG” was wait…she was in bottom 3, there was talk of “not enough votes”, is this a tactic to snag some sympathy votes? I’m awful 🙁
Thankyou PJ ….Yes it was painful in that I suffered migraine headaches most everyday and they didn’t have Imetrex or any other wonder drug back in the 70’s. I also developed cervical arthritis. I still have small to medium bulging discs. in the other vertebrae. I raised 2 girls working over 20 as a CNA and injured my lumbar (another herniation) and another spine surgery 2002. I survived a deadly illness & double pneumonia 2 yeas ago. I ended up in a wheelchair because the illness settled in my lumbar and after coming out of a coma on life-support, I had to be fed because I was so week. I had to push myself to move any part of my body. Eventually I was sitting up but couldn’t walk and was wheelchair bound. After another lumbar surgery (1st one was back in 2002) I pushed myself more than I have ever had to ever still suffering from inflamed “sciatic” nerve, but I knew if I was going to walk it would be the Lord’s strength and my will power and being a Christian for 36 years, I knew where I have always gotten my strength in life. I was walking within in several weeks with a walker and then on my own.
This is why AMY PURDY bring tears to my eyes (happy ones) every time I see her dance. She is so amazing and has such a courageous attitude and although she doesn’t talk about it, I know where her strength comes from also. She has touched my heart strings more than any celebrate ever has since I started watching in Season 7. She doesn’t have my sympathy, but she sure has my admiration for her courage to fight back at life and beat it at its own game. I would like to see her go into the finals.
LOL..Kim & Cidra…I’ve only been voting and been a member on another website and reading about DWTS, but I have to agree that I am trying very hard not to get too cynical, although I am tilting that way more and more.
I don’t get too sucked into the drama these days since I’m not so naive about this show. I agree about the drama…..”yawn”
I’m not saying injuries aren’t real for instance like Bill Nye the science guy as he was lamed to the point he couldn’t continue. I felt bad for him and he tried so hard to continue.
I need to proof read before clicking…LOL I left out the words 3 years
“I’ve only been voting and been a member on another website and reading about DWTS 3 years, but I have to agree that I am trying very hard not to get too cynical, although I am tilting that way more and more.”
Awww KK now u’v brought tears to my eyes. I think sometimes I forget how “easy” my life is, and there r so many people who live with pain/discomfort every day. Thanks for sharing your story.
ITA about Amy.
KKat, you’ve had quite an amazing life journey. Congratulations on overcoming all the challenges thrown in your path. I can see why Amy’s story and successes would be particularly meaningful to you. I’m not the expert that our Mods are, but I think we’ll see Amy in the finals.
As for TPTB manipulating DWTS, I suggest you see it for what it is, but definitely do everything you can to *not* become too cynical about it. There’s still a lot to enjoy about the show, and if you get too tied up in knots with conspiracy theories and focus on the injustice of it all, you’ll go crazy. Whenever I feel like I’m headed that way (and believe me, I do set my feet on that path sometimes), I give myself a shake and say “it’s just a TV show”.
(Clicking my heels together & repeating) It’s just a glittery TV Show…just a glittery TV show. That seems to help.. and a nice frozen cocktail or three.
Three years ago I had a terrible fall in my bathroom. I ended up having a deep bone contusion, a locked Achilles-and a sprained foot, all,on my right leg. I could not put weight on my leg for months. I had to use a wheelchair from End of March to beginning of July. I had much physical therapy to unlock the Achilles and get me up on a walker then a cane. My PT cousin came to my house three times a week, plus gave me exercises to do many times a day. Finally in August I was able to walk again. I had to sleep in a recliner, in fact spent the last part of March, whole month of April and part of May not being able to leave the house. Until my cousin at least got me up with use of the walker and got me moving around. PT is pain and torture but I owe my walking again to my cousin and my hard work.
You guys really need to get over this obsession you have with the uneven numbers in the team dances. Seriously. It happens.
@ PJ & Cidra…..Thank you for taking time to read my post and I just want to say that I appreciate your response. I shared my personal experience to explain why I have admiration for Amy. Thank you for understanding. I am loving this site.
@ PJ…you are right, it’s just a TV Show. I am really loving this season with all the talented beautiful people. That’s what is most important not what the TPTB are doing with their rating raisers. LOL Thanks!
Oh My!!! That what I get for putting two replys on one post. LOL

This was suppose to be for Cidra. 🙂
No worries, KKat, I got it, and you’re welcome.
It’s so easy to get who said what mixed up when you read a bunch of comments and then reply, but if you make individual replies to each comment, it looks like you’re spamming the thread. Oh the dilemmas social media and internet technology has created for us poor mortals! 😉
@ Lois Troutman
Bless you sweetie. I surely can relate to your experience. What doesn’t break us only makes us stronger. Nice to meet you. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
According to a post on Danica’s facebook, she injured herself doing a trick for her routine. Twerking, who knows. Also, this story has been picked up on a lot of media outlets. I didn’t realize it would be that big a deal so it goes to show the power of twitter I guess. I wonder if this will give her a lot of votes this week and if that was part of a strategy. Not the injury but the promotion of it.
Val’s partner, Kelly Monaco, had a couple of cracked ribs also. She did dance though. What does Val do to his partners anyway???? 😉 I’m trying to remember if this was the time that Val said that they “don’t use injuries as excuses” or if that was when he was dancing with someone else. Or am I dreaming???
Meggie, I know he said that to Zendaya when she had strep throat and was having trouble with her health but she threw it back at him apparently when she hit him in the eye and he was upset he might not dance. That is one of the stories out there anyway. He must be rough with his partners and they are not pros. Remember Meryl’s cuts on her back with their tango. Seems a pattern.
As much as I dislike Val, I think injuries are going to happen at some point. Competitive dancing is a tough undertaking. Throw in trying to learn/teach a new routine in a short amount of time,to newbies, with lifts, and things can get a little hairy.
Thanks, Judy, it must have been Zendaya. Injuries happen with a lot of the celebs for sure. I remember that another celeb was injured at the same time and acknowledged it, and Val was rather sanctimonious about not using their (Val and partners) injury as an excuse. it will be interesting to see how Danica’s injury is handled Monday night.
Meggie, I am thinking it will be a dramatic focal point for Danica this week. I am getting so cynical with this season’s shenanigans I can’t help but think there is a voter sympathy component at play.
I think sympathy votes are only good for one week – but maybe that’s all she needs.
Candace showed off a giant bruise on her shoulder and I didn’t assume Mark did something wrong, so I don’t assume Val did something wrong with Danica either.
Quick question-if vicodin, rest and time aren’t enough to help Danica’s rib, does anyone know what the Plan B would be for the group dance? Wat happens if she guts out her dance with Val, but forgoes the team dance? Would they bring in one of the troupe, or a pro who has already exited (although that seems to unfair on the face of it)? Not sure how they would be able to restructure the team dance with one quarter of the team not available. Has that scenario happened before?
There was a team dance early on where Lacey had to stand in for someone – I forget who. I think if Danica isn’t able to dance, one of the eliminated pros/troupe members will fill in; to totally take one couple out of the dance is unfair to the rest of the couples on the team, and no one but a pro would be able to learn the routine in sufficient time.
There’s been more than one team dance that had a pro step in to take the place of the injured celeb. Lacey stepped in – was it for Melissa?? It’s happened at least twice, as I recall.
As for “fair” – you should be over that word in connection to this show by now. It’s NEVER been fair and it will never will be. How can it be when you have the likes of Meryl and Charlie competing against Drew and Candace?? Then there’s Amy – she has no feet. DWTS has never been and will never be “fair”.
Season 8 is when Lacey stepped in for Melissa. The team was Chuck, Shawn and Melissa, but since Melissa couldn’t dance, the judges scored the whole team based solely on how just Chuck and Shawn did in the team dance, but all 3 pairs got that score added to their score for the week.
I don’t remember, but was that the week that they showed her rehearsal instead of the full dance on show night? I don’t remember, but that was the week Chuck went home, and at the time, I thought how unfair that someone who danced went home, when someone who didn’t dance but got boatloads of sympathy votes stayed.
But as been said plenty, this show will never be fair.
If the celeb can’t do the team dance, how do they get scored? Take the lower of the team scores? No team score added to their score?
PH-Aha! Thanks for the answer. Wasn’t really paying close attention during Melissa’s season, I guess.
My question as to replacing Danica with a pro and “fairness” stemmed from thinking that it *might* give her team a plus or edge of some sort in that situation over Charlie’s team. The teams and choreographers will deal with it, should it come about. BTW, not knocking on Danica at all. Ehh. I hope she is able to dance, regardless.
Yeah, Lori – I remember that. It’s much more unfair that someone who could actually dance went home as opposed as one who was too injured to dance.
Sueb, they get the same score that their team got. Yeah…not fair. And this was ten seasons ago.
That doesn’t seem fair. Especially if the dance wins with a pro in there to make it better. They should bring in a contestant that was sent home instead – bring back Diana and Henry!!
Val just addressed the injury in his blog. It does sound quite serious so we will see. I don’t get how this would happen to someone who has strong bones but obviously I am no doctor! Anyway he seems pretty upset about it.
Val also said “I got my eye literally torn out of my socket an hour before the live finale of a season I was favored to win with Zendaya. But that was me. I’m good.”
Massive cry of bullshit from me. You do NOT “literally” get your eye torn out of your socket and still dance. That would require major surgery to fix, not several stitches. So, I doubt very much that Danica’s injury is that severe. I mean, good lord. The hyperbole.
#46 PH … The “favored to win with Zendaya” stuck out to me. Favored how, by whom? And what does that matter with regard to “having your eye torn out of your socket?” Would it have been less painful if he’d been at the bottom of the leaderboard? Furthermore, doesn’t being favored to win and then not winning put the focus on defeat? The C bros seem to have a very difficult time thinking things through. Maybe he just should have given in to Danica on the first request and said, “Please.”
I don’t think anyone’s denying that Danica’ injured – a rib fracture is pretty un-fakeable. But hearing what I have from Deep Throat (a source I trust far more than any blog Val might write), Danica has been rehearsing like everyone else – she only missed one rehearsal actually due to the injury. I think if the injury was really, REALLY serious (as serious as she & Val are claiming it to be), we’d be hearing that she was completely immobile and there would be murmurings about her having to withdraw. I think back to Ricki’s rib injury in season 13 – it was clear that she was hurting and not operating at her full potential, but she was still rehearsing like everyone else and wasn’t telling anyone who would listen how bad her injury was. It just seems a bit overdramatic to me – Heidi & were even talking about Danica’s choice of words when describing the injury. Within the context of ribs, “fracture” makes it seem like the bone is completely broken clean through – when in reality, even a tiny crack in a rib can be considered a “fracture”. As I said before, maybe Danica is just worrying herself to death and has built the injury up in her head – and Val just kinda has to take her at her word. But if she’s be rehearsing normally and they haven’t had to drastically alter their choreography? I have a hard time believing the injury is very dire.
Could be a big manipulation on the part of the producers to give her a story arc. I think this has been mentioned as a possibility by the moderators and it is a good scenario imo. If she dances as per usual it has to have been played up for sympathy votes. I doubt she could dance with a lot of hip action if it was a bad injury and the dance she is doing sounds to be pretty much a lot of booty shaking.
Good grief, she is still going on about her broken rib on twitter. Woman is milking this big time. I mean come on!
“favored to win” WTH – again all about Val. The “C” boys need to get over themselves and think about their partners.
I agree with most here this will be played up big time tonight.
If you are “favored to win” something and then don’t, doesn’t that make you a bigger loser?
I’m with you Princess Heidi….on the eye torn out of socket scenario. There would have been alot more medical involvement and surgery and nothing to that affect ever happen…just some stitches in the eyebrow. Geeeeeezzz!
Well, we will know what really going on in 1 and 1/2 hours. Enjoy the show everyone! Good luck to your favorite (s).
