PureDWTS Season 18 Week 7 Media And Interviews After Dance Night
Wow, what a night!! I’m still upset about how the judges reacted to Sharna and Charlie. So unfair. Sharna tweeted that she isn’t sure what Charlie has to do, but, they will keep fighting. That’s the spirit.
I’m worried on Amy Purdy too. The last she tweeted on her condition, she said she was ok, but, she was still waiting for the doctor’s report. She also tweeted that she’s looking forward to next week’s dance and that she and Derek will dance an Argentine Tango (if she’s good to go).

So, tell me if I’m wrong, but I think the biggest surprise to all of us in the press room each week is how Charlie White and Sharna Burgess keep getting short-changed in their scores. They are amazing dancers and performers, but if you listen to the judges, you’d think they were talking about someone far less talented. Something isn’t adding up, and it obviously has affected Sharna, who’s working her bottom off with Charlie each week. The two of them are still near the top of the leaderboard each week, but you can tell the harsh comments are beginning to wear on them. “We’re certainly trying to make them happy,” a diplomatic Charlie said backstage, “but sometimes it’s just one of those things where your personal preferences don’t line up. Having said that, moving forward, we are still going to try to get 10s from those judges, but it’s not the end all be all. I’m having a blast and loving every second. I don’t want not having a perfect score to detract from that in any way.” Added Sharna: “With great talent comes great expectations, and that’s my job. He’s doing absolutely everything he can do.” Clearly. I mean, Charlie was half-naked out there tonight. When I joked that Sharna would have to be next, she deadpanned, “I’m about at that point

Also the couples have TWO dances next week where have to dance to something with another couple. Also, Mark and Candace reveal they have a Foxtrot. Val and Danica have a Tango. Peta and James have a V. Waltz (as previously reported). Sharna and Charlie have a Quickstep (like we reported to you last night too).

ETA5: According to Amy Purdy at twitter, she has a rib out of place and her muscles are in spasm. She says, she’s “being very proactive in healing up” so she “can continue this journey.” We wish her a speedy recovery. Keep sending her your positive thoughts and prayers.
ETA6: Ok, I’ve just had some time to listen to all the On The Red Carpet interviews. Note that there will be TWO dances next week (if I’m understanding this right): the individual dance and also a Mini Team dance where each couple will dance with another couple, and then the pros will split apart to let the two celebs dance. They will get scored as a team and then those scores will be added to their individual scores. Note that (for what is being revealed so far) Amy & Derek and James & Peta will be paired together for the Mini Team dance. The interviews with Maks, Val, and Peta explain and let out the most information on it.

Glad to hear that Amy is doing better. The problem with a muscle spasm is that the entire muscle is sore and tender for several days. I hope she takes easy.

I think Charlie is trying too hard to please the judges and get the higher scores. I think he needs to just forget about the judges and enjoy the dance and please the fans. He’s been doing amazing each week with difficult choreography.

@Ria: Not to be facetious, but how would new judges work out any better, as long as the judges’ salary is coming from ABC?
IMO, all replacing the judges would do is save ABC some money. It wouldn’t fix any of the problems. [Plus, God help us, they might get Abbey as a full-time judge. *barf*]
Peta&James and Amy&Derek dancing side by side, should be interesting.
I bet the playing up on the rivalry card the two pairs will be:
Charlie&Sharna and Meryl&Maks, Danica&Val and Candace&Mark.
THey better allocate the points in a fair and balanced way.
I am confident that Charlie & Sharna will get their 10s on a quickstep. He’s more suited to the fun/quick dances than intense or loose Latin ones.
As long as they don’t get hosed on the song choice, of course.
I have to agree with Jimmbboe This season is so geered all for Maks and Meryl and I don’t even care to watch anymore Charlie is getting really best up by the judges I was hoping in the end the tables would turn but it looks to me like its a done deal Hopefully when Maks gets his MB he will disappear forever Fat chance of that I know I hope Amy will be ok she has been doing so well would be a shame if she would have to drop out now

I’ve decided that maybe the judges on this show don’t WANT to see competition level routines for the celebs. That’s at least 3 of Charlie’s dances that at least 1 person has said was one you’d see in competition and the judges have harshed on it. Or been lukewarm about it. (Rhumba, Cha Cha and Paso). Admittedly, it was Sharna commenting on the Rhumba and Paso but I think when I read Chelsie Hightower’s blog from last week, she commented on the difficulty level of the Cha Cha.
TOTALLY cool that Dick Van Dyke connected with Charlie and Sharna through Tom. What a great moment for them.

Jessica Radloff from Glamour obviously hasn’t watched too many Meryl/Charlie interviews because Meryl’s interview with Maks was nowhere near what she does with Charlie. Meryl and Maks were talking over one another too.
I agree that Charlie is going to get all 10s next week. He has been training in Quickstep for a year now both on and off the ice.
Candace had a cute interview with Afterbuzz too. She is definitely letting go a bit more.
@Ria: I’m starting to think the judges are told in advance how to vote. Sometimes the look on their faces doesn’t agree with the paddle they are holding up. I thought the same thing in Season 10 as well with Evan. It was pretty obvious at the finale that Nicole was going to win no matter what.

I was so mad for Charlie last night! I DO think Meryl is outdancing him, but I think Sharna has consistently given him strong choreography, more consistently than Maks has for Meryl. And while he was not perfect last night, the comments were all too much. I threw him some extra votes last night and I’m sure that many others did as well.
Meryl’s dance had a ton of choreography, but it was almost too much. It felt like a music video; I lost the feeling of it being on a ballroom dance floor, especially with the troupe dancers being there for the entire piece. So it wasn’t my favorite from her.
I got the same music video vibe from Danica and Val, though the troupe wasn’t there as much as with Meryl and Maks.
HATED James and Peta’s dance. He’s kind of fading in the background for me right now; they need a ‘wow’ dance again. A lot of their samba just felt half-hearted and noncommittal.
Thanks for the updates. I guess, I’m still confused with the dance ‘with another couple’. From the show or another couple from the troupe?
I am thinking that the “couples” dance could be the celebrity version of the Side by Side challenge dance? Two couples each dancing the same dance, with the same choreography at the same time, with the possibility of switching partners for an 8 count or so? If that’s the case I would imagine, simply for logistical reasons, that they’d team Meryl and Charlie since they will once again be on the road by the end of the week. Or, do they not rehearse these dances over the weekend? It would almost be unfair to ask 2 OTHER couples to have to deal with the added pressure of show day camera blocking and would keep everyone on a somewhat level playing field as for as rehearsal time and such. Of course, I could be totally wrong and we’ll see some pairings of the switch up couples (meryl/danica and charlie/james), but I feel that the producers are gonna want to continue their “competition” meme to the bitter end, which would put Danica against Candance and Charlie against Meryl, leaving Amy against James and possibly hurting James dancing side by side with Derek.
It could be an interesting concept unless they “drama it up,” which, of course, they will. *sigh*
Charlie was wearing a knee brace – visible in the rehearsal promo part of the pkg
whoever is storyboarding has taken it a bit too far – hostility and disgust does not make for entertainment – the stage & steps took up quite a bit of the dance floor & part of the unsteady footwork was Charlie avoiding stepping on Sharna (her choreo does cover the dance floor & perhaps because of their schedule they hadn’t had enough time to scope it out) – claims that C&S are actually being scored correctly doesn’t compensate for the routine over scoring of other competitors & the harsh rude remarks whether scripted or not. Many of the new viewers (particularly in the skate community & especially among the instructors who enthusiastically embraced the show & were/are sharing with their young charges) are appalled at what they perceive as utter disrespect & disdain the judges are showing towards Charlie. Perhaps as I said it’s all part of the script but speaking as a first time viewer (& admittedly partial to Charlie/Meryl ) I’m finding it difficult to even enjoy myself watching what I figured to be an entertaining evening and a great way to relax & forget the troubles of the day because of all the tension and animosity the studio audience is vocally expressing and the harsh inconsistent rude judging. I will admit that CAI picked up on that along with the criticism U temper it with specific advice on what needs to b corrected…but it may have come too late…I won’t have the opportunity to see live what transpires because of commitments but will pick it up on video, but I’ve already moved on – the potential was high, the reality is low. The skill and high quality of the other contestants would have been enough without all the feigned drama that has overshadowed the show. Thank You for your sharing your superior forum – U R winners.
I’m not too happy with this new thing that the pros are doing by adding the troupe and some pro dancers to their dances. I’ve heard it called super sizing. I think it distracts from the celebrity and pro and I feel like they are trying to distract some flaws of the celeb by bringing in other troupe and pros to hide them. I ended up watching the troupe and pros and not the celeb. It think it’s fine for a few opening seconds of the dance and end but not like a mini dance group pretty much the whole dance. I feel like they need to change this or put a rule out there that they can’t do that.
My comment is not on DWTS dances or judging but that absolutely hideous so-called dress Elena Samodanova was wearing. Gleb looked good but Elena needs to redo her line if that’s any indication of the rest of it. Awful.
So, Amy has a rib out of place (OUCH) and muscles continuing to spasm (according to her latest tweet). Makes me worry about rehearsals this week. After muscles have been in spasms that long, once they subside, she’s going to be incredibly sore. Positive thoughts and vibes being sent her way.
Did Derek do any post-show interviews? and Is there footage of the live team LOCA performance that might eventually be shown?
As disappointing as this might sound, I wouldn’t hold your breath for a video of the Team Loca performance that the lives studio audience saw last night – unless someone in the audience managed to sneak in an iPhone and record it very discreetly, I don’t see any videos cropping up…I certainly don’t see ABC releasing one.

RaineMayer #29, you can dislocate a rib without breaking it or have a subluxation of the rib, which is slightly less severe. Both end up with a rib out of alignment and are painful. Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury but is generally much more than just a few days.

Ha I was watching Candace’s Ontheredcarpet interview and I think she accidently said Charlie was her partner, and then stopped herself lol, but this will be interesting to see considering Charlie and Candace are the two that are constantly underscored so we will see how it plays out.

Hmmmm…so it was either Meryl or Charlie who mentioned working with a celebrity they are totally unfamiliar with in this “mini-team” dance thing, so maybe I’m wrong about them teaming the two of them up for logistics purposes. From what it sounds in Meryl and Maks’s On the Red Carpet Interview, it sounds like the celebrities got to pick their Mini Team celeb partners…Here’s something that I was thinking, Do you think they underscored Charlie so that Meryl could pick him for the Mini Team dance next week?? Now I’m REALLY hoping she (Candace) has gotten her nerve issues under control because if they don’t get to finish their camera blocking until Monday morning? Could put some added pressure on her. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Why has Access Hollywood not added the rest of the post-show interviews yet? It may just me, but I feel this season that there are not nearly as many interviews with the couples after each Monday’s show.
I thoroughly enjoyed this week’s team dance. However, I hope these partnering are the last of the season. I am so excited to see Meryl and Danica work together–however I feel bad for the other teams. These celebs will have to learn to dance with a new, equally inexperienced person. I don’t like how it’s the luck of the draw. I like the old style, battle it out against each other like every other week.
I think it is so sad how underscored Charlie and Sharna have been, however, I understand the fan base is huge. This makes the judges nervous since this is the Maks and Meryl MBT time so they continue to praise Maks and very little praise to Sharna. Maks danced on broadway this summer in Forever Tange with Karina, give me a break of course he will have great choreography. I am hoping the fans will keep the voting going for Charlie and Sharna, and keep the judges sweating. This show has become so scripted, I am really not enjoying their comments. So glad it will have a new producer…maybe some new judges as well.

I agree with others who’ve said Charlie/Sharna need to stop trying to please the judges. They’ll drive themselves insane trying to hit that constantly moving target. They just need to relax, enjoy the dancing, and please themselves.
I was thrilled to hear Dick Van Dyke got the word to Sharna/Charlie via Tom that he loved their Supercalafragilistic number. Interesting that this was the one dance of theirs that Len also liked. I mean, really, when everyone else on the panel was freaking out about 1 tiny cane drop, Len said “screw the cane” here’s my first 10. I guess TPTB yelled at him for going “off script” because he’s been a b****** ever since. I really hope the old goat likes their quickstep, tells TPTB to take a hike, and gives them a 10 next week (fingers crossed it doesn’t turn out to be too little, too late).
