Could Sharna Burgess And Charlie White Have a Michael Jackson Song For American Icons Dance?
Could Sharna Burgess and Charlie White have a Michael Jackson song for one of their dances for American Icons week? As you know from recent interviews, Sharna has mentioned being really excited about one of their songs. What’s more, her boyfriend/choreographer/dancer Paul Kirkland and another dancer named Ferrari Kid are helping them as you can see in a new instagram below that was captioned with “Just finished an amazing rehearsal with @charlieawhite @sharnaburgess @paulkirkland01 incorporating some #jookin to make the recipe complete!”. Note that both Paul Kirkland and Ferrari Kid helped to choreograph and danced in the recent Michael Jackson “I Heart Music Awards” production of “Love Never felt So Good“. Sure makes one go Hmmmm especially since Kenny Ortega is going to be a guest judge too….or do you think something else is up? NOTE: This is a prelude post too! Stay tuned! Courtney has a new Song Prediction/Wish List Post coming up a little later!! 😉
Hey Vogue, I just saw this on twitter and my thought was “what the hell is jookin and why would it be in a Samba or Foxtrot?” I also had the thought that maybe Charlie and Sharna got something like “Thriller” for their Samba since Sharna has been so WTF about the song choice and it would DEFINITELY be considered a song from an American Icon. Can you IMAGINE? lol
Looking forward to your song predictions post AND any insider info we may get soon.
ETA: My OTHER WTF MJ song for Samba? Billie Jean? curiouser and curiouser am I?
Out of all the MJ songs I know the best suited for a Samba would be “Blame It on the Boogie” . Now for a Foxtrot I have no idea.. Can’t wait for the song prediction post! 🙂
FWIW, Roshon did a samba to “I Want You Back” in season 14…
…Jookin’ is a style of hip-hop dancing that was created in Memphis. A few seasons ago, a really good jooker auditioned for SYTYCD when they were in Memphis…can’t find the clip, though. I think his name was Lil Buck…just go search jookin’ on YouTube, there’s lots of examples. Can figure out how it’s going to fit into Charlie & Sharna’s routine, though 😯
A good example of jookin’…and I have no clue how they’re gonna be able to pull this off:
Whatever it is, I can’t wait to see what Sharna does with it. I always get excited to see her dances.
That is some serious Jookin. Wow. Thanks for the vid Courtney. I just pictured Charlie doing some of what that Lil Buck guy was doing and giggled.. I hope Charlie can pull it off and make it look as swaggy as possible lol I can see them putting some jookin in their Foxtrot or Samba as a little beginning maybe. Should be very fun! Sharna’s so innovative, I love it. If they make the finals (and I’m pretty sure they will) I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for a Freestyle. Should be amazing.
Thanks for the Jookin clip. Seriously, are some people made out of rubber?
I could see them incorporating some of the sliding moves into their dances. It has almost a gliding on ice feel. Perfect for Charlie.
Would love have Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough as their Samba song. Or Can You Feel It, although that’s more of a Jackson’s song.
OMG Court. I know who Lil Buck is. He was a dancer in Madonna’s MDNA tour and MDNA videos. He’s amazing. He does such cool things with his arms. Check him out Turn Up The Radio (blue pants)…
You can really see him doing his thing in her “Secret Revolution Project”;
This was his submission to be in Madonna’s tour and he ended up winning….
A couple of more FYIs connected and leading from one thing to another. lol: Paul Kirkland was also a dancer in Madonna’s Reinvention and Sticky & Sweet Tours. He also danced and helped with the Michael Jackson show in Las Vegas currently.
Wow! This makes me so excited for Monday! Thanks mods!
Whatever they are planning, I feel that it’s going to be SOOOO GOOOD!!! They may risk some grumpiness from Len, but hey, no risk no reward! Bring it on, Charlie and Sharna!
Excited to see what Sharna has in store. It was quite telling during the Rumba package when Charlie mentioned that Sharna always has everything planned out, whereas things are constantly evolving with Peta. Obviously, Sharna is quite proactive in how she approaches things. She puts a lot of thought into preparation and it shows in her choreography. Can’t say that for a certain someone who feels their pro totally deserves to win the MBT. 😉
Teamusa.org has a new interview with Charlie and Sharna. There’s quite a bit of rehearsal footage in there.
*typo
I meant the pro who says their celeb deserves the MBT. 😛
I’ve followed this site for awhile now and it’s amazing!! I think the artist they got for icon week is from Janet Jackson. I don’t remember what interview I saw of Charlie and Sharna but Charlie gave a hint and he said the artist has 5 talented brothers.
Icenetwork.com has also been covering DWTS this season.
Thanks, AC, for sharing teamusa.org because I wouldn’t have thought to look there!
Thanks AC! Coming up soon in a new post. Next time though, write to us at our Contact Us link. Thanks so much. 😉
Kat #14, I thought that was Mark or James who said that? I’m probably remembering it wrong, but it was in one of the after show vids, OTRC or one of those NOT on yt, IIRC.
Will have to search out the USA.org interview as I’m always looking for new info and footage on this couple (since the show is so stingy with their damn pre-dance packages. I mean, 1 minute 30 is the MOST they can give them? REALLY? *smh*)
Angie, the Team USA post is being posted shortly. Maks and Meryl were interviewed too.
So, back on topic, I’m really curious if Charlie can do some jooking and I imagine he can. I admire Sharna so much for how she keeps challenging him. This will be a fun and current routine. Love it.
Jookin’ huh? Well, don’t expect a 10 from Len this week. It definitely won’t be his cup of tea. Not sure it’s mine either although I can fully appreciate how difficult it is to do and the amount of dance talent involved.
Sharna’s really pushing the choreography envelope *applause* and Charlie’s being an incredibly good sport and the ultimate in coachable athlete to go along with whatever she puts on his plate *standing ovation*. Kudos to both of them for continuing to take risks when the favorite couple is going nowhere near the end of the limb.
I’m not going to second-guess Sharna. I’ll just cross my fingers our adorable all-American white guy from the upper Midwest can wrap his head around the moves. Not everybody looks good doing this stuff.
Didn’t Mark give the same clue about the ‘5 talented brothers’?
Well, Sharna managed to seamlessly incorporate a bit of AT into a QS so I will have to bow down to her choreographical (is that even a word? lol) prowess to make this work.
I’ve been thinking about just WHO you could consider and American Icon? I’m one of those people who would go ALL the way back and include people like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Elvis, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, and I’d also include composers of the the great American musicals like Rodgers and Hart and Hammerstein, Marvin Hamlisch, Stephen Sondheim BUT I highly doubt the producers of this show would pull from that vast list of talent and repertoire and we’ll see lots of Madonna, MJ, and maybe Janet, plus a few WTF choices that will leave us ALL scratching our heads going, THAT’S an American Icon? YEESH!
Agreed, Angie. I’d go where you’re going with American Icons; Cole Porter sprang to mind immediately for me.
Sadly most of the young people in their coveted demo have either never heard of or have no interest in listening to music from any of the names you mentioned. We both know TPTB will do everything they can to cater to that coveted demo with as little outlay of funds as possible. Heck, all we need to do is remember “Latin” :roll” Night.
OMG Cidra, how could I forget Cole Porter *head slap*. Abso-freakin-lutely!! *sigh* I fear total disappointment for us, however.
@Cidra and @Angie – you never know. We have a possibility of getting a *really* classic song from Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, et al. for a foxtrot, waltz or quickstep. Sharna has said that their samba music and foxtrot music are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum – so I’m kind of hoping…
Butterly, Thanks for sounding a positive note. You’re right, we shouldn’t give up hope.
Sharna said in their OTRC interview that she would never have expected their samba song to be on DWTS. And she was trying to figure out how they would do a samba to it. One song that stands out, that would be a really odd choice, if it were Michael Jackson would be “They don’t care about us”. But she did say that she liked both the songs that they were given.
Is it possible that they just picked Michael Jackson as the icon and gave everyone a song by him? I think Candace has MJ too.
There is a fantastic video on YouTube of Yo Yo Ma and Lil Buck, if anyone is interested. It is worth a couple minutes of your time, I promise.
I don’t think that everyone will get MJ – they did an MJ tribute type thing during All-Stars and everyone’s second dance was to an MJ song. If they were giving *everyone* his music, I think they would hype it more. They certainly did the last time.
Oops. Sorry about posting about the video in a thread instead of using the contact link, Voguerista. I didn’t know the protocol. Next time!
Cidra, I couldn’t agree more about giving Charlie and Sharna major props for taking risks, especially since they’ve gotten dinged for it before. I love that he’s always so eager to learn something new. Why don’t TPTB realize that working through these crazy ideas would make for a great rehearsal package?
OH!! I just had a thought. Maybe Sharna brought in Paul and Ferrai Kid in order to spice up the ore dance package and get a longer one? Of course that COULD be counter productive in showing Charlie and Sharna getting extra help. Hmmmmn…
Oh what I would give to see a Fox Trot to Singing in the Rain or Porter’s Begin the Beguine? Oh LORDY!! A girl can dream. Lol
Kate, I agree with ButterflyWhirl and I don’t think everyone is going to get a MJ song. I think in a picture of Meryl and Maks it looked like Maks had boots on – I’m guessing maybe a country-inspired jive (I’d think that it’s hard to jive with boots though…)? Although I admit, James’ picture with all those hats had me thinking MJ or Justin Timberlake (does he count as an icon?) … I hope everyone gets different icons though!
If I remember correctly (not sure though!), a couple of other ice dancers and skaters have done routines to MJ in the past and worked with this choreographer, so he probably already knows how to work with someone like Charlie – a good thing!
And do I hear that a Song Prediction/Wish List Post is coming up?? Can’t wait!! 🙂
Monday night DWTS should be a great show…..cannot wait to see Charlie and Sharna. Whatever they do, it will be great!
Wow! This almost sounds like a Finale type of performance! How can they top this next week for the finals? Please don’t peak too soon cuz Derek is really hard to beat in the freestyle!!
Thank you, Vogue, for always posting such great finds!!
YW! 😉 Can’t wait for Monday night to see what’s up!!
Angie (#31), stop making my mouth water. 😛 “Singing in the Rain” would be perfect for Charlie. As for “Begin the Beguine”, *thunk* it’s one of my all-time favorites — so lyrical and romantic in an upbeat way. It would be bliss to see Charlie and Sharna foxtrot to it. *sigh*
Heart (#34), I don’t think we have to worry about Charlie/Sharna peaking too soon. If they make the finals, they’ll be great. If, God forbid, these are their last 2 competitive routines, I want them to be full-on fantastic. These two just bring it every week and keep getting better which is one reason I adore them.
Could it be one dance is MJ/Jackson Five and the other dance a non-MJ artist?
I sure hope so, Misty, because if I hear Michael Jackson’s name mentioned one more time, I’m gonna throw up. I really don’t want to see a foxtrot to a Michael Jackson song. While I acknowledge Michael Jackson absolutely qualifies as an American Music Icon, DWTS has already done Michael Jackson week. So there’s no reason to turn this into another Michael Jackson tribute when there are plenty of other equally worthy American Music Icons who deserve equal time.
To Cidra: Michael Jackson Michael Jackson Michael Jackson. Sorry, I couldn’t resist 😉
