ETA: And speaking of Maks, he had a small part in “Chasing Life” this week. Here is a video. Thanks to Lisa for sending….
RENOWNED CHOREOGRAPHER ????
sor
I apologize , my phone is acting up but I meant to say that “renowned choreograper” might pass for Sharna or Derek but Mr. Fake Kiss and Stare at Each Other For Half the Number ?? NO
I can’t wait to see it! At least I hope it is televised. This seems like it will be at least taped for a later viewing date.
I guess the Disson Skating people committed to this before Maks began “dating” JLo? LOL
It said it would be televised in Feb according to the press release
Thank goodness both Charlie and Sharna are doing it. Enough incentive for me to watch! Please please can they dance together…
LOL @ #3 and #5
The only good thing is that they are not promoting this exclusively as a Meryl and Maks show. But I do not have high hopes for this one at all. There are big name skaters from past years but Disson has a tendency of ruining everything. It will be fit for a telecast at 4:00 p.m. on a Saturday, rather than primetime. I’m curious which other pros are going to be announced at a later date.
Edward villella is considered one of America’s greatest male ballet dancers. He is hosting with Kristi and is artistic director . Douglas is from NY Ice and is one of the choreographers. Edward has won an Emmy for a program he did for TV. These two along with Maks and Sharna and the ice talent says this program is going to be more than your ordinary Disson show. Edward has worked with ice shows as his wife was an Olympic skater. Also Meryl and Charlie’s coach is helping with choreography. I think this show is going to be impressive and I can’t wait to see it. It seems to me that ABC is investing money because someone like Edward doesn’t dome cheap and I’m sure neither does Douglas. They will make sure this is great as their reputations go with the product produced.
#7 ITA with you. I can endure anything for a chance to see Charlie and Sharna.
A chance to see my favorite couple (Sharna and Charlie) again……….NICEEEE!!!
This sounds…..interesting.
I wouldn’t call Sharna a renowned choreographer to be honest, Tori. But nor would I call Maks one.
The only pro I’d call a renowned choreographer on the show is Derek, and perhaps Dmitry previously? Maybe not.

If Maks is supposedly this renowned choreographer amid all these other big names, it seems to me like it could be a case of too many cooks and a sad case of the broth HAHAHA. I will keep my expectations low, so that I won’t be disappointed. 😛 Most of these Disson shows allow for a week of choreographing and practice for the group numbers at best. For skating, that is not ample time to perfect a program. Disson also tends to depend heavily on the musical guest’s song collection. It will be good to see Charlie and Sharna again, but that lumped in with the Meryl and Maks thing just reopens the wounds from the travesty that was Season 18.
Well, it doesn’t say he is renowned for being a choreographer. Maybe they mean that he is renowned for something else, and, oh yes, is also a choreographer. Works for me.:-)
Can either of them skate?
#16
No.
#15 is that how you interpret the meaning of the above article “renowned choreographer”?
re·nowned
riˈnound/Submit
adjective
known or talked about by many people; famous.
“a restaurant renowned for its Southwestern-style food”
synonyms: famous, celebrated, famed, eminent, distinguished, acclaimed, illustrious, preeminent, prominent, great, esteemed, of note, of repute, well known, well-thought-of
Maks Chmerkovskiy “renowned choreographer” (hardly) When he receives an ‘Emmy’ then he will be a famous-talked-about choreographer. 🙂
Professional dancer/teacher – Yes
I agree….Maks a “renowned choreographer”. No way!
The person writing this info must have got caught up in his renowned showmancing and doesn’t know one from the other LOL. 😀
#18 It is when followed by the name Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
# 18. Well then, you just contradicted your own statement of #15 ” it doesn’t say he is renowned for being a choreographer” LOL. Maybe Maks name follows by the words jealous, cocky…like some of his fans (8-O
#23 I don’t see the contradiction. When Maks’s name follows the phrase in question, it must be that the adjective applies to some aspect other than choreographic expertise. In fact, the aspects you’ve mentioned fit perfectly! Renowned for jealousy? Check. Renowned for cockiness? Not only “check,” but please allow me to introduce you to the unquestionably renowned Maksin Chmercocky!! Now that’s a well-placed adjective!!!!
#15 Kate(1) lol…..I should have swallowed my drink before reading your comment. Priceless 🙂
FYI #15 Susan I was also agreeing with your comment too. Kate(1) comment was the one that had me in tears. “Renowned showmancing” summed it up nicely for me 🙂
As it turns out, someone noted that the move in his freestyle where Meryl jumps backwards into his arms was actually taken from a routine she did with Charlie on ice. I would speculate that quite a bit was done for him, which is why I find it funny to read people’s comments saying he deserves an Emmy. I do think he deserves a prize for the most “almost-kisses” in a single season though. If you look at the tribute pictures posted by the fans, it is almost always one of the almost kiss.
#27.
It’s not unusual for dancers to use moves from other dances or other choreographers. For instance if you look at Amy’s and Derek’s salsa in the finale, it was almost identical to the mambo he did with Shawn which was part of his Emmy package. If you look at the two dances side by side which I have, they are almost the same right down to the hand stand Shawn did. If something works, why fix it. If the move with Charlie worked and honestly I haven’t seen it in their routine, why not use it. Same thing Derek did with Amy. Everything doesn’t have to be reinvented.
:::rolls eyes::: And the award for best use of hyperbole to make a point goes to….COLLEEN!! No, Colleen, the two dances were not “almost identical” – hardly. I do agree there is nothing wrong with borrowing a move here and there – they all do it. But when that choreographer who borrowed from his partner, and includes a shit ton of walking and near kisses in his dances, is then mentioned in the same sentence with Emmy – well, not only have you missed the point, but those same people are on crack.
If he gets a nomination on Thursday, I’ll be forced to wonder if the DWTS producers have really gone off the rails and started kissing ass like Nigel Lithgow. Lord knows they never did it for Derek – I would be mystified as to why they would start now, when the choreo is so clearly sub par to anything Derek – or Mandy Moore – did on DWTS.
#28 The difference being that Derek was using moves that he had created, and moves that had to be taught to both partners. Maks didn’t create it, didn’t have to teach it. Meryl instructed him about how to do that move.
I think it was after the salsa with Amy that Derek was really pumped and excited. My reading of that was he had taken a routine originally done by an Olympic gymnast, and taught it to a woman with two artificial legs who performed it brilliantly. That, in itself, was a huge victory, and I think it’s what Derek was so jubilant about.
Honestly I was only trying to make the point that dancers use others moves all the time. I don’t have a favorite pro on DWTS. I like them all at one time or another. My point was whether ice dancing or ballroom dancing there are moves that are repeated. If a ballerina is doing Swan Lake they probably do an attitude or revellee in the same spot countless others have done. I wasn’t slamming anyone, just saying even if Meryl showed that to Maks, they used something she was comfortable with. I have followed Meryl and Charlie forever as I love ice dancing. Honestly I have never seen them use the move in question. Maybe they have, but I haven’t seen it.

Would the award for Most Almost-Kisses be a Razzies category or something we would see on Teen Choice Awards ROFL? 😀
#31 I agree as well that moves are picked up from other dancers. My point wasn’t specifically about that move though.
When was the last time there was an article about Maks which explained the concept and/or inspiration for any his choreography? If he is this renowned choreographer that the writer claims, shouldn’t these be easy to find. 😛
Well, no article about choreography — BUT — if you head over to TMZ there is an article with the headline, “Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Does it look like I’m JLo’s boyfriend?” It includes this sentence: “Maksim made it clear to everyone who looked … he’s not dating Jennifer Lopez — even though he himself stoked the coals,” with the last three words in bold blue ink. And so we have a perfect example of what Shakespeare meant with the phrase, “Hoist with his own petard,” i.e. blown up with his own mine. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy. The article also comments that “Maksim and the buttons on his shirt clearly had a falling out.” So while not an article about choreography, one very well reflective of the talents the elder Chmercocky continually brings to the table.
LOL Susan, those are the ONLY types of articles I see about him. From what I gather, he is a failure at dating too. 😀
Lol, Colleen: the only thing similar about the two dances you mentioned was the handstand. And it suited Amy’s abilities perfectly.
I honestly can’t conceive of one dance Maks choreographed that could be deserving of an Emmy. The freestyle was hardly all that in comparison with SYTYCD contemporary, and I have a hard time believing that he choreographed it himself, borrowed moves or not. You’ll notice their package the week of the finals showed almost nothing of their actual rehearsals besides the possibly borrowed backwards jump. Their AT wasn’t even at par with other tangos done on the show (see Gilles’ first one) and the same goes for their tango. The rumba and the foxtrot lacked in content and hardly displayed any choreographic genius. In fact, if any dance Meryl did is deserving of an Emmy, it would be her AT with Val. And if that dance gets an Emmy nom then I expect Charlie and Sharna’s Paso, foxtrot and jazz to get nominated too, in addition to Amy and Derek’s jive and AT.
A word about the salsa. I just watched it again. There are several other moves that were in Shawn’s mambo, there was one of Kellie’s moves. (On the non-dance side, there was a drummer, which was how Derek started Shawn’s mambo.) The reason I’m bringing all this up is because I think, consciously or not, Derek put together a 100%, no holds barred, no ground given salsa routine, with bits and pieces from other routines which he had created for bodies without the challenges that Amy faces. Amy was flawless, without any accommodation of her “circumstances.” That’s why I think Derek was so jazzed after that dance. He just keeps pumping his arm in the air. She had gone from someone not knowing at all what she could do to someone who performed to perfection a 100% in the game routine. To me, those “borrowed” moves weren’t put in for any reason other than as part homage, part marker of what this amazing woman has accomplished. I loved those moves from Shawn’s mambo. I was thrilled to see Amy doing them.
Needless to say, none of this finds any equivalency in Maks.
@Penny # 37
I have to agree that I’ve haven’t seen an outstanding choreographed dance by Maks that would inherit an Emmy, either. Nor do I remember Kenny Ortego saying anything about Maks “re-defining choreography.”
Someone with these two accomplishments under his belt was also called a “legend” by a popular choreographer is certainly worthy of being called a “renowned choreographer.” And, I can also adhere to the fact that I have never read an article or announcement about the one and only “Derek Hough” that needed to PUMP him up. But, instead stated exactly his unique & aspiring talents as a great teacher, an outstanding dancer, and a genius in his choreography. In other wards, a tough act to follow! 🙂
@Susan: I hadn’t watched the salsa since the show ended, so you’re probably right… oops. I absolutely agree with you on the fact that Derek gave her a thoroughly traditional, technical salsa to do. In fact, after seeing Meryl’s non-AT, I was floored by how chock-full of difficult choreo Amy’s salsa was and how flawlessly she handled it. Those who kept crediting Meryl as the most “technical” dancer performing “pure” choreography ought to have changed their minds based on those two performances. Then again, that would require them to be rationally thinking human beings, as opposed to trolls who would say anything they could to bring down Amy.
Sytycd had plenty of great dances from last season and for me, NappyTabs are the ones to beat this year. Their opening number for the top 20 last year was terrific and I anticipate it being nominated tomorrow. Derek has a great chance too and if he did his paso Macy’s, freestyle with Amber and any dance with Amy like contemporary, jive or tango, he has a strong chance too. It shows tons of versatility. Anyway, Maks routines barely good enough IMO compared to what what Derek, Sharna and Val ( quickstep with Danica and AT with Meryl) let alone the work sytycd pros like Stacey Tookey did last year.
I will be shocked if DWTS gets more than one Choreo nomination tomorrow…and it could well go to Mandy Moore. But Derek has a good shot. Maks?? Someone would have to be paid off. It could happen, I suppose.
Colleen what two dances are you watching?? Clearly not looking at the same Salsa and Mambo I have watched about 20 times each. I think Heidi answered it pretty well: those two dances are HARDLY identical.
I certainly hope that Mandy Moore is not the only nomination. Mr. Hough deserves the nomination so much more(IMO).
Annnndddd….Derek was the only choreo nomination from DWTS. Mandy was nominated for SYTYCD.
