FIGURE SKATING IN HARLEM CELEBRATES 18 YEARS OF
EMPOWERING NYC GIRLS BY HONORING GLORIA STEINEM AT
10TH ANNUAL SKATING WITH THE STARS GALA
ON MONDAY APRIL 13, 2015
Event to feature performances by Dancing with the Stars’ Mirror Ball Champions
Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy(New York, NY) December, 2014 — Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) will honor women’s rights champion Gloria Steinem, Olympic Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek, and Feld Entertainment’s Nicole, Alana, and Juliette Feld at its 10th Annual Skating with the Stars Gala. The benefit event will move from the ice to the dance floor this year and be held at 583 Park Avenue on Monday, April 13, 2015, at 6:00pm. The evening will celebrate Figure Skating in Harlem’s one-of-a-kind education, health, and fitness programs for underserved girls while offering guests the rare opportunity to dance and mingle with some of the country’s great Olympic figure skaters including Sasha Cohen, Gracie Gold, Scott Hamilton, Michelle Kwan, and Kristi Yamaguchi. As a special treat, guests will enjoy performances by Dancing with the Stars’ Mirror Ball Champions Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
Andy Cohen, Jessye Norman, Alicia Quarles, and Tamara Tunie (FSH Chair Emerita) will serve as this year’s Honorary Chairs; Celia Chou, Tracie and Scott Hamilton, Ellen Lowey, Tina and Terry Lundgren, Diana Taylor, and Vera Wang are among the Event Chairs.
“This unique evening brings together New Yorkers who believe in the importance of empowering girls to become strong leaders through a combination of sports, arts, and education. Honoring a trailblazer like Gloria Steinem is a perfect fit. She is known for her work with prominent African-American women who together knocked down barriers and opened doors for generations of girls like ours to reach their full potential,” said Sharon Cohen, Founder of Figure Skating in Harlem and a 2014 CNN Hero.
Now in its 18th year, Figure Skating in Harlem remains the first and only organization in the country that combines the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to transform the lives of underserved girls. Through its unique programming, FSH provides NYC girls with innovative skating and education programs that promote academic success, physical health, and emotional well-being. Recent graduates of the program have gone on to Brown University, Howard University, Boston College, and others. The proceeds from this year’s gala will help launch a new STEM program and implement a plan for expansion beyond New York. FSH envisions taking its model program national by its 20th anniversary.
Sponsors of the Skating with the Stars Gala include Amway, Estee Lauder, Macy’s and Bloomingdales, and Consolidated Edison, among others. Tickets to the gala, which include cocktails, dinner, and dancing, start at $1,250. Sponsorship packages start at $5,000. All tickets are available online at www.figureskatinginharlem.org or by calling (646) 679-3765.
I suspect this event will be pretty empty once the shippers finally accept that he’s back together with his own personal door mat.
It won’t be empty. Maks will keep up the charade until all business is wrapped up and I’m pretty sure that will include Season 20. It really is sad to watch.
#2 Rose that’s going to be pretty difficult for him to do when Peta and his friends are advertising how much they’re together.
The gala is aimed at the New York money/philanthropic crowd, not shippers. Notice that the tickets start at $1250. Meryl and Maks will give it a nice PR hook, but likely won’t make much difference who attends.
#4 AC don’t underestimate the shippers. These are the same people who spent money to fly to somewhere in the middle of Illinois and then on to Long Island NY a week before Christmas to see them.
“Personal doormat”? Are you talking about Peta? I love her and I wish her and Maks all the best. Yes, maybe they broke up for a time for whatever reasons, but, maybe they both learned from it and things are even better for them now because of it.
Donna, maybe after making a full circle he is finally “feeling it”. I wish Peta more luck this time.
It’s not the breaking up and making up that raised eyebrows, but his comments. His ego always rakes over. Much luck to Peta.
Yeah, last time was a rebound. There must be something pretty good there for them to be back together.
Or maybe Maks has realized it’s better than being alone. Has he even had a girlfriend since they broke up? I mean a real one, not a trumped up showmance or publicity stunt.
It’s been a while so I may be rusty, but I don’t recall a rebound. Peta walked out on Damian to be with Maks and didn’t Maks just finish his Bachelor Ukraine show before hooking up with her?
I always liked Peta and Maks together. She always looked like the kind of person that would be like “Alright Maks, lets just calm down a bit” and he was a lot more chill when he dated her.
I thought he was freshly over Karina when he dated her? But, honestly, I don’t pay as much attention to Maks as his fans and haters do. 🙂
Karina was several years earlier. I think Maks ruined all credibility he had when he did the Bachelor stint. He talked smack about the people that did the domestic version, but tried to make his participation in the Ukraine version sound honorable, and all the while he had a serious girlfriend in the US. Guess you could say that’s when I turned from (big) fan to “hater.” He is definitely a polarizing figure any way you cut it, and I think he wants it that way. It keeps people talking, including me lol.
#12 Vin I don’t think he was “chill” with her. Weren’t there reports of Maks causing a lot of tension on the set during All Stars and the whole fam mentality with him, Val and Peta putting everyone off?
#13 No Heidi, Karina was a few years done. But it is interesting he’s gone back to Peta just as Karina got engaged.
#14 Rose Maks hooked up with Peta about a year after his Ukraine Bachelor days.
Actually Donna, Maks and Peta have been back together since the past season of Dancing With The Stars. Karina has only recently got engaged.
I think so too Vin. She seems to give him a sense of peace.
#16 In that case Vogue I stand by my door mat comment since he continued to egg on the showmance with Meryl all through last season and right up through Sway. But I’ll stop now.
The Karina issue I thought had been over with at that point. Peta had just won with Donald and it to me it seemed “Peta won…. let me ride on her coat tails for as long as that will work.” Because after she had won maks was with her at everything and they were all over each other. It just seemed superficial.
I’ve always liked Peta and I’ve always liked her personality so i hope he finally sees how great she is.
That’s not quite fair, Donna. We (Courtney and I) heard he was back with Peta early to mid-season 19, I believe it was – if not before. It’s not a very recent thing, in any case.
Thanks Heidi. I don’t think it’s fair either…who has a perfect relationship and why can’t people get back together if they want? Why should either one be called a door mat if they do?
Maks spent alot of time with Karina over the summer in BWAT. They seemed very cozy. Guess she rejected him again!
#21 Vogue it’s not the getting back together. As Rose said above it’s the way Maks handled it and the things he said about her. They were unnecessary when a simple “it just didn’t work out” would have sufficed. I’m not a Peta fan but I was so embarrassed for her.
#22 Kimberley this is a pretty popular opinion among many fans.
I don’t know the details of why they broke up first time other than someone in his camp saying “he wasn’t feeling it anymore.” That would hurt me if I was Peta but apparently they have moved beyond it. People grow and change, priorities change etc. Maks seems very comfortable in his life right now (I’m not a fan so really don’t follow him) but they are both adults. Obviously Peta still cares for him and if they want to get back together, it’s their business. I hope they are happy, I’ve always liked Peta and hope she finds her happiness. People break up and reunite all the time. But I certainly don’t think she’s a doormat. Maybe she never stopped loving him. Maybe he needed to figure things out (and win his own Mirrorball) and now they are in a new place. Hopefully they will have better results this time.
I’ve really grown to like Peta a lot lately. I hope she’s happy whoever she’s with.
Sometimes you’re with the right person but it’s not the right time.
Of course I can’t be sure but I doubt very much that Peta and Maks are back together.
#25 Liz that’s pretty sad to even think the lack of a mirrorball would affect Maks’s personal life. But it’s Maks so sadly it’s the truth.
I hope Maks has grown up a lot since the last time he dated Peta. He treated her like shit last time making tacky comments after the breakup. Saying such things as “I am still looking for a woman that makes me happy” and the not feeling it comments, not to mention hashtagging after “out with the old, in with the new” just showed what a jerk Maks can be at times. I guess the comment he also made ” an ex is an ex for a reason” doesn’t stand anymore. I also thought it strange that he was hanging all over her after she won the mirrorball. I like Peta, and I hope she won’t have any hurdles this time. Gosh, who am I kidding, she’s dating Maks! LOL!Seriously, I guess if Maks makes Peta happy that is all that counts. He just better not hurt her again or he is gonna have a lot of Peta fans going on a hating spree.
My sense is that Maks is a decent guy, most of the time. What gets him in trouble is his complete lack of discretion or common sense or responsibility. He brings most of the shit thrown at him on himself with his tactless ways. All under the guise of “being real”. Well, guess what, buddy – when you are that “real” you have to live with the consequences. Words and actions have consequences – most adults know this. Say what you want – but live with the consequences like an adult.
This is the part he’s not figured out yet.
@PHeidi #30
I sense the same thing, that Maks is a descent guy (most of the time) also. And I agree with you about what gets him in trouble. You put it right on!!
